Plateau Deputy Speaker, Minority Whip, dump PDP for APC

The Deputy Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, has announced the termination of his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and has indicated his interest to join the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

The Deputy Speaker made his decision to defect from the PDP to the ruling APC through a letter he addressed to the house, which was read during plenary on Tuesday.

Gagdi, in his letter announcing his defection, said his former party is wallowing in internal conflict that has become a source of embarrassment to its members.

He also alleged that there has been no peace fold, due to the poor leadership style of the state executive of the party.

He said: “Meanwhile, my constituency, my local government (Kanam Local Government Area) is an APC stronghold. There have been so much pressure from the people that voted me into power, that I should join the ruling party. After much consultations among people of my constituency, it dawned on me that my remaining in the opposition for long will be at my own peril.

“Hence, after due and wider consultations, I have decided to take the bold step, by announcing my decision to follow the dictates of my constituents. I have therefore decided to join my people in the ruling APC.”

The Minority Whip, Hon. Daniel Nanlong, said his decision to join the ruling APC means that he would sacrifice his position as the Minority Whip.

Nanlong, who represents Mikang Constituency, said: “I prefer to lose my principal position in the house than losing the support of the people that gave me the mandate in my constituency.”

Receiving the decampees on the floor of the house, the Majority Leader, Hon. Henry Yunkwap, said the APC has gained an overwhelming majority in the house and that there is the possibility of the remaining few PDP members joining the APC in the nearest future, adding: “That is the beauty of democracy”.

Speaker, Hon. Peter Azi, said the new entrants into the ruling party would be granted equal status with other members of the party, considering the fact that they are principal officers of the house.

However, the PDP leadership in the state has said that the action of their two assembly members will not in any way affect the popularity of the party.

Plateau State has initiated reforms for effective land administration.

It has launched the Plateau Geographic Information System (PLAGIS) to digitalise the registration of land title.

The state said the system could reduce land litigations.

The reforms include digitisation of land administration and reduction of titling challenges.

Addressing stakeholders in land administration at a meeting organised by the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Town Planning, Governor Simon Bako Lalong said the state was committed to having an effective and efficient land administration anchored on best practices.

“The digitisation of land administration and the reduction of the cumbersome process through which titles are secured with the Geographic Information System, is just one step up the ladder.

“The second step is the involvement of all critical stakeholders to ensure that the system works for the good of the people of Plateau,” he said.

Lalong said beside improving on the state’s revenue generation, the Plateau Geographic Information System will guarantee the accuracy and legality of registered interest in land.

According to him, with the sophistry of its information data management, it will reduce law suits over land.

Thousands of applicants for titles had expressed dissafection at the slow process.

When PLAGIS was launched in June, no fewer than 55,000 applicants of land titles had been kept on hold for almost a decade.

Since the launch, 4000 applications have processed. Though commendable, the governor said more needs to be done.

  • Plateau kick-starts economic diversification

Plateau State government has gone far in its effort to diversify the economy of the state and make it richer through the development of abandoned economic potential of the state.

The economic diversification programme of the Gov Simon Lalong-led administration has led to the reviving of old industries that were hitherto not considered viable by past administrations.

The Chairman, Technical Board of the Plateau Investment and Property Company (PIPC), Nde Ezekiel Gomos, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in his office at Murtala House Jos.

According to Mr Gomos, “The economic diversification of government has seen to the revival of four state-owned industries; Highland Bottling Company, Fertiliser Blending Plant in Bokos and the Jos Ultra-Modern Market, which was razed down in 2002 and abandoned by past administrations.”

He said, “Forty years after its establishment, dying Plateau Investment and Property Company (PIPC) has been resuscitated and engaged by Governor Simon Lalong, to assist his government in revenue drive and compensate for the dwindling economic fortune of the nation.

“The Gov Lalong administration engaged the technical board to first revive PIPC itself, which was literally killed by the Jonah Jang administration in the name of restructuring; where all staff of the company were sacked while the new staff that took over knew nothing about the company. “That was what informed our coming in as a technical board, to inject some experience into reviving the company.

“We recalled the sacked staff and realised that even before their so-called sack, they had not been paid for one year. So we began by clearing all their salary arrears. The company was also recording serious financial losses during the so-called restructuring, which reached about N29 million. In about nine months, we’ve been able to clear that also; and the company is now profitable. We also inherited an overdraft balance of N19 million, taken from a commercial bank, which we have also paid.”

Outlining some of the activities of the company to help the state in generating revenue, Gomos said works are on-going at reviving the Bokkos Fertilizer Company that was abandoned since 2003, and at Highland Bottling Company, Barkin Ladi, to resuscitate them and make them good sources of revenue generation for the state.

Gomos said PIPC partnered with wife of the Governor, Mrs Regina Lalong, to train over 100 women in entrepreneurship and skill acquisition as part of the International Women Day celebration in Plateau State.

He added that aside from reviving Business Foundation radio magazine programme, PIPC recently sponsored the first ever dinner hosted by Governor Lalong with the business community in Jos in the month of July.

In its nine months of operation, the technical board assured that it has put a robust machinery in place towards the rebuilding of Jos Main Market through Public-Private Partnership (PPP), by driving the process that led to the signing of the contact of N232 million with a UK company for due Technical Advisory Services.

He also stated that within the period, they have renovated six–storey corporate headquarters, Murtala House.

Commending self for a laudable job in a space of nine months, the technical board said “Six of our houses in Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja have been renovated and rented out to tenants; and we have invested N75 million in a property in Rayfield, Jos. We have also designed and sold 90 plots from the Race-course Turf Club along Bauchi road; and we have been able to track and recover all the investments of the company valued at  about N155 million that were lost during the so-called restructuring exercise.”

He said that the Plateau State government can now hope that with all that PIPC has put in place to generate revenue for the state in the medium and long term, the economic crunch biting hard on the nation would be cushioned.

  • Council chief, monarchs hail MDGs projects in Plateau

The rural parts of Plateau State are changing, thanks to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) projects. The ambitious plan by the United Nations to raise the standard of life in remote areas is yielding fruit in the state, as primary schools and health clinics are being built. A local council chair and traditional rulers have hailed the projects, which include furnishing schools and giving soft loans to rural women to boost their businesses.

The Chairman, Management Committee for Wase Local Government, Dr Ado Abubakar Buba  said, “I wish to, on behalf of the entire Wase people, express our deep appreciation to MDG and Plateau State government. We have received a lot of interventions that will change the lives of our people for good.”

Speaking further, Buba said, “MDG has, within the last one year, constructed seven primary schools; they have constructed four clinics, they have also provided ambulances to convey sic people from the remote villages to hospitals at the council headquarters. In some of these villages, pupils sit on the bare floor of their school to receive education, many of our clinics don’t have drugs to give patience, and so on. But today, we are not just celebrating new schools and clinics, we are receiving equipment like desks, books and instructional materials to furnish the schools. We have also just received drugs and a lot of medical equipment to furnish the new clinics constructed by MDG, we have never seen this kind of interventions in the history of the local government. We don’t know how to express our joy as a people, but we know these interventions will serve as a major transformation in the lives of rural communities.”

Dr. Buba promised to take the items to the various communities that deserve them.

He also said, “What we cherish most is the financial grant allocated to women cooperative societies to carry out agricultural related ventures; this is because the local government is 90% farmers populated. This will translate into more food for the family and financial sufficiency of families”

The Emir of Kanam, Alhaji Muhammed Sambo Haruna, who was represented by the Wazirin Wase to recieve the items said, “This is a dream realized, because when these construction began last year, we doubt its completion, our people thought it will be like every other government projects that are likely to be abandoned along the line. But today we are celebrating its completion and furnishing. Our people are full of gratitude, these are projects that will directly touch the lives of our people. And for this, the people of Wase emirate will continued to support and pray for the Governor Lalong led administration as well as the state MDG”

The Chairman Management Committee for Shendam Local Government, Hon Alex Miskoom Nantuan, in his appreciation said, “We consider this day as unique day in the local government, simply because it is now that the rural communities in Shendam understands what MDG stands for. Because of the dare need for school desks in our village schools, we had to distribute mist of the desks provided by the MDG even before they could hand them over to us formally. We only left some few for this symbolic presentation. But with this presentation today, we shall go ahead and distribute these drugs to our various clinics as well as the instructional materials to schools. The people are so pleased because it is the first of its kind, our people may have been hearing of MDG, but today we have seen practical actions of MDG through what they have provided for villages in dare need of social amenities in areas of health and education.

While handing over the items to the council boss, Plateau state Coordinator of the MDG, Hon Samuel Damla said, “The completed MDG projects was that of 2013 which was neglected by past administration in the state, but Give Lalong saw that the project would change the lives of the down trodden when completed, so he thought the project back for completion, and indeed we are witnessing the last stage of the project which is the formal handing over of the projects for the end users.

Hon Damla said, “This 2013 MDG intervention was specifically for projects that has to do with education, health, water and sanitation, which was why we embarked on construction of primary school blocks, construction of health clinics and provision of boreholes. But the good thing is, the project was not just empty constructions, there is equipment to furnish them for the benefit of those using them.

In addition to the project, Wase LGA and Shendam LGA will be given four mobile Clinic Vehicles which are expected to be used to convey emergency health cases from the rural villages to the local governments for medical attention. These mobile clinics are fully equipped with medical facilities including Oxygen facilities that can sustain the patients four hours until it got to the closest hospital. These vans are no meant to be used as ambulance, he warned.

“The handing over of these projects now marked the end of MDG program which terminates in 2015. The UN has entered into the 2nd phase which is now known as Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The SDG is expected to last 15 years within which period it is expected to close the gap between the rich and the poor in the world,” said Hon Damla.

  • Plateau plans new roles for monarchs

Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has vowed to strengthen the traditional system and empower monarchs to contribute more to governance.

He spoke while receiving the reports of the committees on Review of the Creation of Chiefdom, Districts Village Areas and on  Review of Remuneration and Welfare packages of Traditional Rulers in Plateau.

According to him, past administrations made “a mockery” of the traditional system, saying there was need for a change.

“With the receipt of these reports, our rescue administration is now equipped to address the mockery that has been made in the past of the revered role of our traditional rulers with the remuneration and welfare packages given them.

“Further to this is that our ethnic nationalities will find the necessary drive that would propel community participation, human capital development and by extension the physical development of our state,” he said.

Lalong, a lawyer, said monarch have crucial roles to play in a democracy and in ensuring maintenance of law and order.

“The appreciation of the responsibilities and authorities that the occupants of traditional stools carry, further gave government the urgent need to review their remuneration and welfare packages to reflect in pragmatic terms, the appreciation of their services.

“It is for this reason that the two committees were inaugurated and for which we have gathered here to receive their report. As the State Executive Council receives and considers these reports for implementation, we will remain guided by the desire to promote peace in our communities, through the cherished ideals of integration, mutual-coexistence and respect for our cultural values.

“I wish to say, we are on a march to destiny in uniting our people and creating the value of our shared heritage. As our ethnic clusters see our diversity as strength and as we recognise and respect our common ancestry, situated by God Himself, for us to live together in harmony, no narrow ethnic interest that seeks to deny the existence of the other, can break through the bond of our unity,” the governor said.
