  • Postponement: Plot to enthrone Interim Government – CNPP

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) on Saturday described inconsistencies associated wit the preparations for the 2019 generations as supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as “part of a deliberate plot by anti-democratic forces to derail Nigerian democracy and enthrone an interim government in country. CNPP in a statement by its Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu wondered why “an election that took the electoral umpire four years to prepare for would be postponed at eleventh hour despite assurances by the Commission that it was ready for the elections.

“Before now, there has been subtle mussing about plans by some forces to enthrone an Interim Government on the country and it is becoming obvious that such forces have thrown their evil spanners into the democratic electoral process to have a reason to carry out their clandestine agenda. These forces, we suspect, are the same that have carried out systematic arson that led to the destruction of electoral materials and Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) at different parts of the country few days to the election and the killings in Kaduna State on the eve of the election.

“As an umbrella body of all registered political parties and associations in the country, we compelled to alert the nation and urge well-meaning Nigerians and lovers of democracy around the world that the postponement of the election for February 16, 2019 may not have happened as a mere logistics problems as adduced by INEC. Even when the rumour of plans to postpone the polls strongly permeated the air days to the planned election date, the electoral umpire reiterated its readiness to go ahead with the exercise as scheduled, we are shocked that INEC suddenly postponed the election about five hours to time of commencement.

  • Dogara’s defection: Plot to polarise House uncovered

A plot to polarise the House of Representatives, especially the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus, has been uncovered.

In this light, the recent crisis in which various allegations were flying around might be part of a greater strategy to prevent the APC caucus in the House from speaking with one voice after the planned defection of the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

There was confusion in the House of Representatives over allegations of plans to impeach Speaker Dogara by the leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Investigation by The Nation has shown that the allegation, which came from the former Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, might have been contrived.

Jibrin is the arrowhead of the Parliamentary Support Group (PSG) in the House.

However, some members have expressed surprised at the allegations, saying there is also need to investigate the activities of the PSG in the House.

They recalled the threat of the group and the utterances Jibrin made in a statement for which he was referred to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges.

The statement reads: “We wish to categorically state that the ongoing taking of signatures of members in the House of Representatives by the PSG is not for the purpose of impeaching the Speaker, but to reaffirm our support to Mr President and consolidate his support base in the House.

“We will soon know the real enemies of our country and democracy. Those that have become dictators playing god, suppressing, suffocating, threatening and treating colleagues like slaves, using a democratic institution for selfish reasons and as instrument of blackmail.”

  • Plot to suspend Magu uncovered

THE battle over the appointment of a substantive Chairman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is not yet over between contending forces in government and the National Assembly.

A plot to suspend the anti-graft agency’s acting chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, was being perfected by those opposed to his retention.

But pro-Magu supporters in government are of the opinion that he remains the best for the job.

They said since there are cases in court over whether or not it was necessary for the Senate to confirm Magu, the matters should be allowed to run their full course to the Supreme Court level.

The National Assembly had rejected the nomination of Magu and made his removal as one of its demands for a quicker resolution of the crisis between the two arms of government.

But the Presidency has remained adamant on the choice of Magu for the job in view of his “unique forensics investigations in the last three years”.

According to investigation, some anti-Magu forces met in the past one week on how to resolve the feud between the Executive and the National Assembly, especially on Magu.

The said forces were said to be “looking for an outright solution to Magu imbroglio”.

Most of the bigwigs were also said to be nursing fears that with or without Buhari’s second term in office, Magu can move against them after leaving government.

It was learnt that Magu will be suspended under the guise of any of these cooked up allegations:

    *owning phantom houses at home and abroad;

    *opening of an account with suspicious lodgments;

    *working in cahoots with an Arab as a business partner;

    *unyielding position on the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit( NFIU);

    *alleged irreconcilable figures on the amount recovered from looters between the Ministry of Finance and the EFCC;

    *alleged insubordination; and

    * the likelihood of the EFCC operational activities jeopardising the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Since the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, declared that the Presidency was insisting on the choice of Magu, those opposed to the acting chairman of EFCC have also returned to the drawing board.

“Working hand-in-hand with some members of the National Assembly, they have disagreed with the VP.

“The latest plot is to hide under any of the phantom allegations above to suspend him from office whenever the President is out of the country or Abuja.

“Once the suspension is announced, it will be difficult for the President to reverse. The alternative will be a fresh crisis in the presidency over Magu.

“Apart from using  the Presidency-National Assembly feud as an excuse, some of these anti-Magu forces also believe that with the tough stance of Magu in office, it could affect the chances of Buhari’s second term bid.

“They also claimed that with Magu out of the way, the relationship between the Executive and the National Assembly can be smoother. Those in the Senate have specifically asked the presidency to prevail on Magu to stop the ongoing investigation of some senators.”

Those who favour Magu, including the vice president, a few Northern Emirs and limited members of the kitchen cabinet of the President have insisted that those against the acting EFCC chairman were out to derail the anti-corruption agenda of the Buhari administration.

A source in the Presidency said: “Magu is a financial crime-buster with exceptional courage. The VP is saying he is the most fitted because the quality of investigations under Magu by the EFCC.as forensic fidelity. Even all the suspects so far interrogated know.

“It is like getting to the middle of a river and contemplating a return. The anti- graft war by the EFCC has earned Mr. President international rating and to do otherwise is to make nonsense of what has been achieved.

“Those who do not want Magu have other agenda than backing the anti-corruption campaign of the President.

“There is no question of insubordination against the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation as being claimed. AGF Abubakar Malami and Magu recently travelled to Dubai together on assignment

“And why will anybody be so desperate to plot to open an account and lodge cash there in the name of Magu? This shows the extent of desperation by those opposed to him.”

On the crisis between the Presidency and the National Assembly, the source added: “Without Magu’s nomination, the stress will still be there. Their demands are many and we are trying to reach some understanding.”

Magu has clarified that he did not acquire houses anywhere.

He was quoted to have told those who are backing him that “I have no houses abroad, I don’t own any business let alone having a foreign partner whether an Arab or Lebanese.”

Magu also said he had no direct contact with recovered funds since they go into some dedicated accounts.

  • Plot and plotlessness in the “Buhari script” of politics and history: reflections (2)

Plot and plotlessness in the “Buhari script” of politics and history: reflections (2)

Epilogue – 2019 and Beyond: Myth and Counter-Myth; Plot and Plotlessness

Buhari stands for the presidential elections of 2019; he does not stand for the presidential elections of 2019. Either way, the spell has been decisively broken and the Buhari myth or legend is completely in ruins. Nobody, absolutely nobody thinks anymore that Buhari is the messiah Nigerians have been waiting for; nobody, absolutely nobody thinks any longer that Buhari is God’s answer to the plague of corruption in our country; nobody, absolutely nobody thinks anymore that Buhari is a fair-minded ruler who will do justice to all Nigerians regardless of their ethnicity, religion, region and social status. The myth, the legend has been completely shattered and things are no longer anything remotely close to what Nigerians and the world felt and thought about Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. Thus, the Buhari script of history and politics is very different in its Epilogue than the script in any of its earlier segments: the prologue, the first, second and third acts. And there are different versions of this Epilogue that is itself so different from the other parts of the Buhari script of the future.

In one version of this Epilogue, the real person that has emerged from the ruins of the shattered Buhari myth has liberated himself from the emotional and psychological burdens of the myth. It is no small thing to no longer have a heroic, larger-than-life reputation and profile but Buhari has reconciled himself to the change with grace and wit. His little-known sense of humour is now known by all and sundry. He retires to his farm in Daura and enjoys his last years basking in the love and the solicitude of dotting children and grandchildren. He is at peace with himself and the world. He receives few visitors and seldom travels out of the country, but the most consistent and devoted of his supporters and followers still sing his praises to Nigeria and the world and Buhari finds this consoling and comforting. To these supporters and followers, he is still “Sai Buhari!”. And thanks to the much better health that he now enjoys beyond the battles with the recurrent and debilitating ill-health crises of the eighth decade of his life, he is now less gaunt-looking, less morose-looking, even though he is frailer in general appearance and demeanor. Politics? No, now he has no time or stomach for politics at all.

Another version of this Epilogue exists. In it, though the shattered Buhari myth is still in tatters, unbelievably and unfortunately the man that has emerged from the ruins still labours under the unreal, phantasmal burdens of the myth. He is unmoved by how Nigerians and the world now think and feel about him: the bitter disappointment; the widespread fear and even foreboding that his rule may set Nigerians further apart than they have ever been; the worry, the anxiety, the angst that the modern world is leaving the majority of Nigerians behind. Unmoved by such widespread thoughts and feelings of dread, Buhari himself and his supporters and followers in general live in a world of their own, very much like Trump and his diehard followers and supporters in America. Like Trump and the hordes of his most fanatical admirers in America, Buhari and his supporters are in profound denial about the devastating aspects of his rule as an elected, civilian ruler: the ever-widening circles of poverty, joblessness, insecurity and suffering; the billions, even trillions of naira still being looted; the waste and squandermania still perpetrated unabated; the number of youths, women and children that remain economically disadvantaged and socially marginalized. The few scattered achievements are blown out of proportion and proposed as the dominant reality: an increase in the internal production of rice; the Boko Haram insurgency pushed back into its earlier preference for “hit-and-run” tactics, now seemingly unable to conquer, hold and control large swathes of territory; the arrest and prosecution of looters, most of them from previous administrations and opposition political parties. These are all touted as the “dividends” of Buhari and the APC’s “change” mantra for which Nigerian and the world ought to celebrate Buhari while nearly everything else in thje country is unraveling. Partial and misleading statistics, figures and data are trotted out by Buhari’s spin doctors and image-makers to convince Nigerians and the world that what they are seeing is not what they are seeing, that truth is not truth but facts that everyone and anyone can manufacture out of thin air. In this Trumpian or Buharian make-believe world, the Buhari script of history and politics departs totally from Nigeria as it really is for the vast majority of its peoples.

An even more frightening version of this Epilogue exists, compatriots. Here it is. The presidential elections of 2019 prove deadlocked, inconclusive. APC has imploded, a process that began before the elections; the different factions of the PDP are in total disarray; the smaller ruling class parties seem to have disappeared into the night of history; only the Kowa Party and the National Conscience Party are talking and making sense, though they do not have any electoral legitimacy to give them political salience and moral authority. The Left is weak, divided and politically irrelevant, though a few isolated voices are speaking coherently and passionately out of it and for it. The crisis is so deep and wide that it seems impossible to form a Government of National Unity (GNU) for which there are calls from all quarters of the political class. Law and order have completely broken down in many parts of the country and rampaging, marauding militias and gangs are having a field day virtually everywhere in the country. On only two previous occasions had the country’s political order been so close to total breakdown: the crises of the early to mid-1960s that ultimately led to the civil war of 1967-70 and the meltdown that led to the GNU headed by Ernest Shonekan after Babangida’s cancellation of the electoral victory of M.K.O. Abiola in June 12, 1993. But this crisis of 2019 is deeper and wider than either of these previous instances: Buhari’s personal situation is like the endgame “last stand” of Robert Mugabe (2017) and Jacob Zuma (2018) combined; the country’s general condition is close to that of the Democratic Republic of the Congo of the Kabila (father and son) years.

    Concluding reflections

Let me remind you, compatriots, that since an epilogue is like a postscript that comes after all the actual and/or effective contents of a life or an experience have been reported, narrated or dramatized, none of the versions of the Epilogue outlined in this essay has happened or need ever happen. Buhari’s term in office has not ended and things are still fluid as we move toward 2019. In other words, the Epilogue that I have outlined here is an imagined one; it has no compelling or inevitable plot. Indeed, we can say that it is necessarily plotless. As a matter of fact, in all likelihood, none of the versions of the Epilogue outlined in this piece will happen as detailed; the greater probability is that we will get combinations of parts of these versions, together with parts of other versions that we cannot even imagine at the present time. Time has not run out on us, on our country and its teeming disenfranchised and marginalized communities, groups and individuals. We can still avoid any or all of the frightening visions of the future that the rule of Muhammadu Buhari and the APC in particular and the entire political class in general has unleashed on our country. I would like to bring my reflections in this series to a close – but not a closure – on this matter of an open, plotless future.

Muhammadu Buhari, as a major protagonist in the drama of Nigeria and its post-independence rulers, is the ultimate if unwitting victim of plotlessness. Let me break this rather abstract observation into an easily understood proposition. Thus, I suggest that plotlessness implies an absence of control, an absence of certainty and of guarantees: if things can go wrong, they will probably go wrong. On the other hand, you might expect that things are going to end badly; they unexpectedly turn out well in the end. That’s plotlessness for you.

The first coming of Buhari, 1983-85, was dogged by plotlessness, the ultimate expression of which was the coup that abruptly and unceremoniously ended his dictatorship. In the foolish belief that he could impose his own will, his own “plot” on history and politics, Buhari went so far as to promulgate a decree against truth that more less made this declaration: even if what you publish against my regime is true, you cannot and must not publish it if it will bring disrepute to me and my regime. It is one thing to think and act foolishly; it is another thing to think that others will also think and act foolishly because you have decreed that they should so think and act. That, I submit, is the folly and the tragicomedy of Buhari’s rule, both as a military dictator and an elected, civilian ruler.

Truth and plotlessness have also dogged the second coming of Buhari: Maina, Babachir Lawal, Ayodele Oke and now Usman Yusuf. Add to this list the repeated herdsmen massacres of farmers and their communities. The great majority of Nigerians, North and South, are not with Buhari and his version of “truth” in these and other cases. Here is the ultimate effect of this division between himself and most Nigerians on the matter of truth that Buhari cannot seem to get: he will not change his mind or his action(s); and he will not explain things to anybody. That decree against truth of his first coming still has a profound, unbreakable grip on the president. Meanwhile, all the rationalizations, all the half-truths about Buhari’s incorruptibility, his competence and willfulness are being relentlessly stripped of their power to persuade or to cajole. No man or woman can forever set himself or herself against truth and hope to get away with it. That’s a fallacy, a Buharian fallacy.

I call it a Buharian fallacy but recognize that it is “Buharian” only because the current president is the ultimate avatar of this political and moral malaise that almost without exception afflicts virtually all our heads of states and a good number of our state chief executives, past and present. And in this respect and only in this respect, Buhari is more “honest” than all our other rulers: he does not pretend, he does not dissemble, he does not hypocritically preach about “truth”. When and if he is exposed, he does not apologize and he does not change. He also does not accept responsibility for the consequences of his stolid indifference to truth. Those who still cling to the Buhari myth and blame the “cabal” for all the extraordinary acts and expressions insensitivity, callousness and power-drunkenness that we have seen in the second coming of Buhari take note: Buhari is the one with the power, the one that must bear the responsibility.

Where do the Left, the progressives, the true patriots, the popular masses and those who fight on their side stand in all of this? Must we/they just place our/their hopes on plotlessness? No! Plot has never gone out and will never go out of the picture, the narrative, the drama. Plot here implies planning, working and struggling for justice, fairness, equal opportunities – and truth. But this is the subject of another piece or another series.

Shi’ites allege plot to kill El-Zakzaky

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has alerted the public to what it calls plots by unidentified people to assassinate its embattled leader, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.

The allegation is contained in a statement by its spokesman Ibrahim Musa.

The statement reads: “The Islamic Movement in Nigeria is drawing the public’s attention to a mischievous plot by the enemies of peace in Nigeria. This latest plot, as disclosed to us by a reliable source, is a fresh attempt to kill our leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, who is being detained illegally, in clear contempt of court’s judgment.

“According to the scheme, the operation against IMN will start after a crucial and important “national announcement” is made in the coming days or weeks. Those who hatched the plan want to cash on the political uncertainty they hope the announcement will generate, to finish off the plans they started years back, which culminated in the December 2015 attacks.

“By carrying out their plan to kill our leader, and spilling the blood of innocent civilians, they hope to exterminate the movement once and for all.

“We also know that troops have been strategically and massively stationed in the major cities this operation will be held; waiting for the day the “special announcement” will be made, so they can kill innocent lives.

“We call on the international community to prevail upon the Federal Government to call its security agents, who seem unsatisfied with the souls they massacred in the December 2015 crisis, to order.

“Assassination of Sheikh Zakzaky and the murder of members of IMN will not benefit Nigeria and Nigerians. We, therefore, urge them to urgently terminate this scheme. We will remain committed to the peaceful ways of getting justice for victims of the Zaria massacre.

“We, therefore, reiterate our demand for the immediate release of our leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, as directed by the court.

“People of goodwill, not only in Nigeria, but the world over, are concerned on the fate of the Sheikh who will be 600 days in unjustifiable detention. We want him free now, including his wife and other members of IMN in detention since the Zaria genocide.”

  • Alleged removal plot: Fayose free to entertain himself, says Fayemi

Alleged removal plot: Fayose free to entertain himself, says Fayemi

•Governor’s aide: you are living in fool’s paradise

Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has said his successor, Ayo Fayose, is running a comedy show following the allegation that he (Fayemi) is plotting to use the judiciary to unseat him.

Fayemi, who is minister of Mines and Steel Development, said he was not prepared to respond to the antics of Fayose, saying he would not allow his personality to be dragged into the mud.

The former governor spoke at the weekend in a chat with reporters in Ado-Ekiti when he visited the family of his late deputy, Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka, on her father’s death, Chief Festus Obafemi Famuagun.

The minister was accompanied by his wife, Erelu Bisi, his former deputy, who has just been appointed chairman, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Dupe Adelabu, some All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains and aides.

Fayose last week accused Fayemi of enlisting some Supreme Court judges in a plot to reverse the June 21, 2014 governorship election.

Fayemi said he would not want to dignify Fayose with any reply, adding that he will  not stop the governor from entertaining the world with his comedy.

He said: “I have told you severally that I won’t discuss the present Government of Ekiti State on any issue. And on this issue, I won’t dignify him with a response.

“This is a free world, as you know anybody can propagate any giddy or ideal as he deems fit. I don’t belong to the mud and I don’t want to be dragged into the mud.

“He is free to say whatever he likes and just let him continue to entertain the people or himself.

“You know that I would never join issues with Governor Fayose. He is entitled to his opinion and he is free to entertain himself. So, let him continue to entertain himself. At the appropriate time, he would meet his comeuppance.

“I don’t belong in the mud. So, he cannot drag me to the mud. Truth is always constant and I know posterity is there to judge.”

Speaking on the life and times of Pa Famuagun, Fayemi said his death was a personal loss to him, describing him as a close confidant. He said the deceased’s wise counsel and candor would be missed.

Fayemi added: “Pa Famuagun was not just a father, he was a confidant. We thank God for his life because he served God and humanity. Even at old age, he kept on sending messages to me and asking after everybody.

“His death to me was like losing a loved one. But we will emulate his good virtues and this I believe was the best we can do to honour him.”

But the Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to

Fayose, Mr. Lere Olayinka, said Fayemi never won any election in Ekiti and that he is only a democrat by court appointment.

He said: “He will continue to live in the fool’s paradise concerning his scandalous defeat in the June 21, 2014 governorship election.”

Olayinka, who was reacting to Fayemi’s statement on Saturday that “at the appropriate time, he (Governor Fayose) would meet his comeuppance (punishment),” described Fayemi as a “serial betrayal of confidence whose political future will remain bleak, having betrayed his number one political benefactor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.”

“If there is anyone that deserves to meet both physical and divine punishment, that person is Kayode Fayemi, who plunged Ekiti State intodebt by stealing the state blind and betrayed someone like Asiwaju Tinubu, who made him governor,” Olayinka said.

He added: “Since Fayemi has never won any election in Ekiti and he became governor through judicial manipulation, he can never appreciate democracy. Even the primary election that gave him the Action Congress (AC) governorship ticket in 2006 was manipulated in his favour.”

The governor’s spokesperson, who challenged Fayemi to file his case at the Supreme Court, said: “We will meet him there and surely, he will be defeated as usual.”

  • Why plot to take Lagos by force failed, by APC

Why plot to take Lagos by force failed, by APC

The Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) has said losing the March 28 Presidential election frustrated plans by the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to take Lagos by force.

A statement by the party’s publicity secretary, Mr. Joe Igbokwe said the then ruling party would have deployed everything in its arsenal, including security agencies and ethnic groups, to dislodge the APC-led government in Lagos if Nigerians had renewed the mandate of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Had the PDP succeeded in stealing the Presidency on March 28, it would have used the Army, Police, DSS (Department of State Service), Civil Defence, Oodua People’s Congress, a section of Afenifere, and anything it could lay its hands on to ‘steal’ Lagos by force.

Igbokwe was reacting to last week’s ruling by the Supreme Court in an appeal by Jimi Agbaje (PDP) in which Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was declared winner.

He said the people’s resilience to free themselves from 16 years of oppression and the decision of Lagosians not to embrace a party that had been rejected frustrated the plans of the PDP in the state.

According to him, the ruling from the highest court confirmed that Lagosians voted for the APC, even as he assured them that the party would not let them down.

The statement reads: “The apex court’s verdict has proved beyond reasonable doubt that our candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode won the election fair and square, defeating Mr. Jimi Agbaje of PDP with more 160, 000 votes.

“We thank God for giving us victory both at the national and state level in spite of brazen impunity and injustice, intimidation, harassment, oppression, suppression, repression, political recklessness and abuse of power.”

“The resounding victory from the apex court tells us in no uncertain terms that Lagosians have not forgotten how Alliance for Democracy, Action Congress, Action Congress of Nigeria and now the All Progressives Congress, transformed Lagos in the last 16 years and made it the fastest growing cosmopolitan city-state in Africa, the largest economy in Africa with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of more than $135 billion.

“Lagosians have not forgotten how the progressive party cleaned up Lagos and made it a livable city. They have not forgotten how our party made Lagos a safe haven for business activities. They have not forgotten how we built the most formidable security architecture to protect lives and property of residents.

“The Supreme Court’s verdict is yet another call to duty and we know that Governor Ambode possesses the required skills, training, experience, character, discipline and the energy to consolidate the gains of the past 16 years.”

“The APC-led government in Lagos will not lower the bar of leadership but will continue to show the way forward for other states. Lagos will continue to provide the template for development; Lagos will continue to be a pacesetter, the harbinger of progress, the leading light and power house of ideas in years to come.”
