Senate President: no plot against Buhari

Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday pledged that the Senate will be fair in the ministerial screening.

Reacting to the statement by All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s aide Sunday Dare, Saraki’s Media Adviser Yusuph Olaniyonu issued a statement on behalf of the Senate President.

He said: “I saw the statement said to be issued by Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu over a story published by The Sun newspapers. I have decided not to join issues with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, I know  that most Nigerians are aware that there has been no meeting or communication between me and Asiwaju Tinubu since I was elected Senate President. Therefore, I do not see any basis for a newspaper to report that we are both plotting to oppose the President.

“I recognise Tinubu as one of the leaders of the APC who contributed so much to the victory of the party in the last election. Some other people also contributed and I believe the collective efforts made it possible for the first time in the history of our party for an opposition party to win the general elections.

“Let me state clearly that I remain a committed member of the APC and will do all in my power to ensure the party fulfill its promises to bring positive changes into the country.

“Since my election as Senate President, my focus and efforts have been devoted to doing the job that I was elected to do by my constituents and my colleagues in the Senate. Twice, my colleagues have confirmed their support for me as the primus inter pares in the Senate.

“As I said in my speech when we resumed from our recess late September and in Ikenne yesterday, the screening of ministerial nominees will be handled by me and my colleagues with all sense of responsibility and in adherence to the provision of the constitution. We will be fair to all and be guided by the interest of Nigeria. The screening will be devoid of sentiment and it is not an opportunity for anybody to settle scores. We are equally eager for us make a positive difference in our polity and Nigerians will be able to judge us whether we acted in their best interest or not.”

  • Ex-militant ‘exposes’ plot to restart arms struggle

Plots by some former militant leaders to return to the creeks and begin arms struggle against Nigeria have been uncovered.

A statement in Warri during the week by the leader of the Niger Delta Amnesty Leaders Progressive Change for Buhari, Commander Bibi Oduku, said some ex-militant leaders had concluded plans to commence activities aimed at attacking oil and gas facilities in the region, especially sabotaging oil pipelines as well as make the riverine communities uncomfortable for companies and humans.

He, however, added that those ex-militants going back to the creeks would not be doing so in the interest of the oil-rich region, but to satisfy their personal and criminal targets.

He added further that his group, working with leaders of the region, including kings and chiefs, had put defense plan together to secure lives and oil facilities in the region, adding that proper intelligence programme was also in state to  thwart the criminal plots.

“I hereby assure all Nigerians and Mr. President that the basic security map plan of the Niger Delta riverine areas has been well drawn and it is assisted by some kings and high chiefs from different kingdoms.

“In this accord, I hereby inform the general public that any militant leader going back to the creeks are for personal, criminal selfish interests. And we will not allow any threat or criminal activities to take place in our areas nor support any criminal activity.

“We the peace loving citizens have made sure that even with the treat of some militants, we have drawn and complete a proper security system for pipelines, lives and properties in the water ways of Nigerians.

“These characters feel they are working against the growth of the economy of the country and the peace of the people, but I am assuring the government that all security intelligence has been put in order, that will not support any character of such in our areas anymore.

“I am using this medium to advise all ex-militants, freedom fighters and good citizens of young men in the name of freedom fighting, while the benefits are eaten up by some self-centered leaders. Join these leaders no more, support President Muhammadu Buhari, support Boro, support Bibi for a new Nigeria, for peace and harmony,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) the Central Naval Command (CNC), Rear Admiral Apochi Suleiman, during an inspection tour of facilities and platforms under the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, in Warri, had warned that the navy would be stern with criminal activities in the waterways, henceforth.

While responding to questions from journalists during the inspection of facilities, Suleiman admonished those who might be nursing thoughts of taking arms up again in the region against the state, saying such people would be treated as mere criminals.

“It will be very unfortunate if the ex-militants are regrouping. They had a channel through which the amnesty was granted, which is expected to terminate by September and there is a Special Adviser on Amnesty, I expect that they should go through that process to air anything that is bothering them.

“For us, we are not scared of their re-grouping, we are prepared in all respects to counter any eventuality. Militancy is criminal and it will not be in our place to parley any militant, if they have a grievance they should go through procedure, we are all Nigerians,” he said.

Pillars’ players, fans plot Emordi’s sack

Both players and fans of champions Kano Pillars have demanded for the immediate sack of coach Okey Emordi, AfricanFootball.com has specially gathered.

The Nigeria league champions lost their seventh match of the season on Wednesday at Emordi’s former club Enugu Rangers and thus dropped two places to ninth on the table with 22 points from 15 matches.

They are now seven points adrift of leaders Sunshine Stars and in grave danger of not winning the championship for the fourth straight season.

“Pillars are under pressure to do away with Emordi. Both the players and the fans want him out now,” a source informed AfricanFootball.com

“The players said they do not understand his tactics.”

Thousands of protesting fans also stayed away from the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano for last weekend’s home game against Dolphins.

Emordi appeared to have met a recent ultimatum served him but only because it was not properly worded, AfricanFootball.com was informed.

The website further gathered that a showdown talk, where Emordi’s future would have been discussed, earlier slated before the club’s home game against Dolphins was shelved.

Their next league game is at home to El Kanemi Warriors on Sunday.

Thereafter they face a tricky Federation Cup tie against high-riding Nigeria National League (NNL) side Plateau United in Kaduna on Wednesday, July 8.

  • Plot to sack Muazu, NWC: PDP leaders in dilemma

Plot to sack Muazu, NWC: PDP leaders in dilemma

Key stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are are caught in a dilemma over the next line of action on the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, and his team in the National Working Committee (NWC).

Two separate meetings of the party’s national leaders and elders, called by President Goodluck Jonathan during the week, failed to take a definite position on the fate of the elected party officials.

While some of the stakeholders are calling for the sack of Mu’azu and his subordinates, others have argued that they be allowed to complete their tenure, which expires in March, 2016.

The disagreement is coming just as a prominent chieftain of the party has fingered the President-Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the ruling party’s “nemesis”.

Our correspondent’s investigation revealed at the weekend that all the party’s outgoing governors have insisted on outright dissolution of the NWC, to pave way for a new set of executives.

The governors, investigation further revealed, are being backed by a leader of the party in the Southwest zone, Chief Olabode George and a few others. A source privy to the meetings said President Jonathan has chosen to remain neutral.

Our source also said the President had directed the stakeholders and contending parties to embark on further consultations, with a view to finding amicable solution to the raging crisis.

The anti Mu’azu forces, particularly Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, had argued that retaining the present crop of the party’s executive members would be counter-productive.

According to them, rather than mobilising support for the President in the last election, the Chairman and his team members were preoccupied with pecuniary pursuits to the detriment of the party.

Allusions were made to instances where the party officials shared money among themselves when they were supposed to disburse same for campaign purposes.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, had at a recent media briefing, stated that members of the NWC collected N30 million each.

Metuh however, explained that the money was for the backlog of allowances and medical expenses of the NWC members.

Apparently, the money was part of the proceeds of sales of nomination forms for the various elective positions in the last general elections.

He had insisted that funds were not made available to the party officials for the presidential campaign, saying the funds were directly placed under the control of the Presidential Campaign Council.

Buttressing Metuh’s position, a high ranking member of the party’s top decision making organ said the NWC should not be blamed for the crushing defeat the PDP suffered at the poll.

The official, who craved anonymity, said the PDP faced the most formidable opposition in Buhari and Tinubu who he described as the party’s nemesis.

Said he: “I think it’s high time we stopped this fruitless blame game. Buhari and Tinubu were our nemesis and not the NWC members.

“If you are a member of a club, you must be bold enough to say the truth when things go wrong. Tell me, how many of us can match Buhari’s popularity in the entire north? How many of our members can stand against Tinubu in the Southwest, even in the states that are not under the control of the APC?

“Let me tell you something, during the campaign, some of us from the north were compelled to chant ‘Sai Buhari’ by the same people we tried to sell our presidential candidate to.

“So, whatt can anybody do in a situation where your audience insisted that you must hail your opponent. So many of our people in the North see Buhari as a kind of god. We were helpless.”

Meanwhile, the Post Election Assessment Committee set up by the party to review PDP’s poor performance at the poll has called for memoranda from members across board.

At a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, the Committee Secretary, Senator Walid Jibril said there was need to seek input from diverse opinions within the party.

According to him, restricting contributions to leaders and chieftains of the party would not yield the desired result, stressing that contributions from followers, who constitute the bulk of the voting segment are very crucial.

He vowed that any party chieftain found to have acted in ways and manners suggesting anti party activities would not be spared.

Jibril, who is also the secretary of the party’s Board of Trustees, added that the PDP would succeed in putting its house in order sooner that most people expect.

“I can assure you that we are working very hard to get our rhythm back. We have put the last election behind us and we are focusing on the future of the party ahead of 2019”, he stated.

SUPER EAGLES JOB: Plot to stop Keshi thickens

    • Some members vow to announce Big Boss’ replacement if…
    • Monday or Tuesday meeting cancelled
    • No further discussion with out-of-contract coach

The last has not been heard about the quest of former Mali and Togo senior teams’ chief coach, Stephen Keshi to retain his job as the Super Eagles’ tactician for another two years.

SportingLife gathered from those who should know at the Glass House on Sunday that some Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) members are miffed that the federation’s president, Melvin Amaju Pinnick could constitute a three-man panel to negotiate a deal with Keshi, despite his abysmal failure with the Eagles at the qualification matches for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the Elephants  of Cote d’ Ivoire won in Equatorial Guinea.

SportingLife scooped that many members are waiting for the board’s next executive meeting – tentatively slated for Thursday – to tell the president their views on the matter, with words rife that they would outrightly reject Keshi’s return to the Super Eagles on grounds of a controversial interview where he described Pinnick as a liar for mis-informing Nigerians about the purported unpaid two months’ salaries.

Besides, the members would draw the president’s attention to the unannimous verdicts by the members of the Sports Committee in the House of Representatives and the Senate urging the NFF not to renew Keshi’s contract having failed to qualify Nigeria for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

These members have vowed to announce a new Super Eagles coach if the NFF is cajoled by anyone to keep Keshi on the job, having witnessed how Siasia was sacked for not qualifying Nigeria for the 2012 AFCON amongst other failed coaches who lost their jobs in the past.

Interestingly, the earlier slated Monday (today) or Tuesday’s meeting with Keshi, his manager and lawyer in Abuja, has been cancelled forthwith.

Instead, a source close to the three-man panel revealed that Keshi would be presented with another contractual terms where he either takes it or rejects it. In fact, a member of the panel appealed to the media not to heat up the polity with the Keshi saga, insisting that the NFF would announce a new Super Eagles chief coach at the appropriate time.

  • Rangers plot opening day triumph at Taraba

Rangers plot opening day triumph at Taraba

Ahead of the start of the 2015 Nigeria Professional Football League this weekend, Enugu Rangers coach, Kelechi Emeteole says he hopes they start on a positive note.

The Flying Antelopes are in Jalingo to keep a date with FC Taraba in their opening fixture, says if they are to meet the target of winning a place on the continent for next season, they must start getting results from day one.

“We have a target of finishing in continental places in the league and the best way to do that is to start winning from day one.

“It doesn’t matter whether we are playing away or home, we should start picking up the results as early as possible and it will be a delight if we get it started this weekend,” Emeteole said.

The veteran coach was in-charge of former Nigerian champions, Heartland last season, before replacing John Obuh in Enugu for this season.

But despite his optimism, he reckons that Taraba will also be expecting a win, and hence will make it a tough encounter.

“We are also very mindful of the fact that they (Taraba) will be playing for a win, especially with them playing at home, so it’s going to be tough.

“But to be the best you have to go through tough challenges and that is we hope to do,” he emphasized.

  • Still on the plot to remove Jega

SIR:  The clandestine plan to remove Professor Attahiru Jega as chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission is rife in spite of the denial by the Presidency. But why is this government full of guile? There is no doubt that the tenure of Jega ends on June 30 and the rescheduled general elections are less than four weeks now.

Are they not inviting anarchy if Jega is illegally removed through the civil service rule? Can a retired civil servant be reappointed? No. But an INEC Chairman can.

Also, whoever takes over may want more time to do the dagger-man’s job which they would want him to execute. However, any further change in the dates of elections will violate the constitution and the electoral law. Covert or overt action taken to tinker with the rescheduled dates is not only criminal but dangerous. The handwriting is conspicuous; the ruling party is fighting tooth and nail to retain power. Man’s greatest battle is the one he fights against himself. Jega’s INEC was the cherubic chum of the Presidency and PDP in Anambra, Ondo and Ekiti states’ gubernatorial elections; its electoral dish has now become stale. Jega has suddenly become a xenophobic umpire!

It is now imperative for the President to banish the pseudo-political analysts to purgatory of psychosis. A man’s friends are innumerable when his hands are dripping with honey but they all disappear the moment such hands begin to bleed. Nigeria is greater than all of us and the selfish ambitions of the few among us.

Today, what Chief Simeon O. Adebo said in July, 1969 summarizes our “modus vivendi”: “We live in troublous times. Look where you will, there is hardly a spot where there is stable peace, where there is not actual fighting there are grave tensions, where the tensions are not international they are local”.

It is only President Goodluck Jonathan that can douse the looming conflagration by allowing Jega to complete the job he started four years ago shortly after the 2011 general elections. No political chicanery can change May 29, handover date.

  • APC alleges plot to use religion for votes haul

APC alleges plot to use religion for votes haul

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged a plot by desperate politicians to circulate leaflets in mosques and churches, using religion as a tool to win votes.

Its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement in Lagos yesterday, said the plot was in line with the track record of those who have consistently used religion to divide Nigerians to feather their political nest.

‘’They are hoping that by further inflaming passion with the highly emotive issue of religion, they can revive their shriveling political fortunes. That is why they have devised the latest strategy of pitching Christians against Muslims through the circulation of satanic leaflets. Nigerians should not be taken in by this cheap plot,’’ the statement said.

The party reminded Nigerians of the most recent attempt to use religion as a tool to win votes, when Vice President Namadi Sambo said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has more Muslims than the APC, and that the APC vice presidential candidate was a pastor who runs 5,000 churches.

It added: ‘’It must baffle every right-thinking Nigerian what the vice president stands to gain by his resort to base instincts. It is more baffling against the background of the fact that it was his party, the PDP, that first labelled our party, the APC, as a Muslim party.

‘’Not even when the APC elected a Christian as its National Chairman, supported by many party officials who are also Christians, did they back off from their incautious claim. It did not occur to them that our party is more religiously diverse than they have sought to portray it to Nigerians.”

APC said it had been campaigning on issues of relevance to Nigerians, including how Nigerians would be put back to work, how the citizens would be better protected, how they would be weaned from their forced dependence on electricity generators and how the party’s governors have delivered the dividends of democracy in their states, those on the other side have been trading in negative and inciting campaigns of the most primitive kind.

‘’We ask Nigerians to disregard anyone peddling religion as a tool for securing votes in any part of the country. Faith is a personal thing to individuals and no responsible government will seek to use religion to divide the people,’’ APC said.

    Plot to discredit Ambode uncovered

A group, Eko Liberation Movement (ELM), has alerted to a plan to procure and tender a fake medical report to discredit the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Akinwumi Ambode.

In a statement by its convener, Gbolahan Agboola, the group said: “A faceless group is set to procure a fake medical report to discredit Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, as being unsound in mind, body and spirit.

“There is no amount of shenanigan by the desperate opposition to discredit him that will change our resolve to support him in his bid to keep Lagos on the track of greatness and prosperity.

“Their latest antics are to claim that Ambode had suffered a strange mental illness. We cannot be deceived by any false claim from any group or individuals. Ambode is our man for the job of moving Lagos to the next level.

“He possesses the mental, spiritual and physical capacity to take Lagos to the next level.  Well-meaning Lagosians should disregard such rumours and ill-advised activities of the opposition.”
