Forty special detectives, acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbedokun, are searching to arrest Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the spokesman of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, The Nation has learnt.
It was gathered that the IGP men were deployed from Abuja to arrest Dawakin-Tofa on a complaint filed by the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Ganduje had petitioned the IGP over his suspension from his ward in Dawakin-Tofa Local Government, accusing the governor’s spokesman who is from his constituency of orchestrating the suspension.
Family sources told reporters yesterday that the detectives who were in plain clothes were spotted around the residence of Dawakin-Tofa on Monday.
One of the members of the family who wants to remain anonymous because of security reasons lamented that the secret police ransacked the residence more than five times, scaring members of Dawakin-Tofa’s family, including the wife and children, as well as creating apprehension in the neighbourhood.
“The IGP special force has mounted dragnet for Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa’s arrest in the last two weeks despite an order of the court restraining the IGP, DSS, CP Kano and other security agencies from arresting and or harassing the Kano hovernor’s media director general,” the family source said.
Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of Kano State High Court had granted an ex parte application, preventing further manhunt of Dawakin-Tofa pending the hearing and determination of substantive matter on his fundamental rights slated for January 22, 2025.
The animosity between Dawakin-Tofa and Ganduje dated nine years ago, when Ganduje, as governor-elect, reportedly ordered Dawakin-Tofa’s arrest over his opposition during the gubernatorial election.

The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended 15 suspected cultists and armed robbers in Ibadan and its environs.
Items recovered during the arrest include five inscribed cultism jackets, three Dane guns, one locally made pistol, one locally made cut-to-size gun, one long barrel gun, a Toyota Camry with registration number KTU 41 JH, one red cloth, a powder blue beret with inscriptions, and three cutlasses, among other items.
Speaking while parading the suspects at the Command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, the Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, stated that cultism and other criminal activities have become a major concern for the police in the state.
He noted that the Command has received disturbing reports of cult-related activities in some parts of Ibadan, particularly around Apete, Abayomi (Iwo-road axis), Ijokodo, Moniya, Monathan, Ojoo, Samonda, and Sango areas.
He said: “As we all know, cultism poses a significant threat to public safety, hence the Oyo State Police Command’s strategic interventions to counteract and diffuse the sinister trend first through; intelligence gathering, advocacy campaigns, designated stakeholders’ meetings and then afterwards regular intelligence-led raids to prevent the spread of further blood-letting in our beloved State.
“Ongoing Investigations have revealed that these experiences of cult-related violence are retaliatory driven embedded with components of the quest for absolute dominance by these sinister Cult groups against their rivals.”
He urged parents, guardians, and leaders to prevail on their children, wards, and followers against Cultism as the Command would not relent in ensuring that any individual or group who distorts the relative tranquility of the state faces the full wrath of the law.
He, however, said the period in view, residents will witness, high-level visibility policing, coordinated stop and searches, and intelligence-led raids to assert Police presence as the lead agency in matters of internal security from time to time.
“It is worthy to note that the Oyo state police command under my watch has increased the level of supervision of our field officers, particularly those in the junior cadre to prevent cases of professional misconduct, incivilities, and extortion during this period.”
Two suspects alleged to have specialty in certificate forgery have been arrested by police operatives attached to the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Zone 2, Onikan.
The suspects were alleged to have specialised in forging documents of various international universities, as well as allegedly defrauded several unsuspecting victims on the internet.
Elvis Osakpolo Edokpain, 23, and Kelly Osas Endgieen, 24, were alleged to have acquired exotic vehicles and erected mansions in different parts of the country with the proceeds of fraud.
Added to their alleged charges is the attempt to bribe detectives with N66 million to be let off the hook. It was gathered that the investigation team had to report the development to the AIG, Adegoke Fayoade, who directed them to play along with the young men to secure the money as exhibits.
Their arrest, it was gathered, followed a tip-off to the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Zone that there was a group of boys who engage in forging foreign certificates.
The unit, acting on orders from Fayoade, laid ambush on the suspects who were said to have been out of the country at the time.
Acting on credible intelligence, detectives were said to have stormed the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, from where they trailed the suspects to a hotel at Osapa-London in Lekki.
It was gathered that the young men soon got wind that the police were after them and made to flee the hotel but were arrested at the bus stop with their luggage.
Sources alleged that upon search of their luggage, detectives found a certificate from Blue Crest College, Ghana, belonging to Edokpiain, while a student identity card of Academic City College was recovered from Kenny Osas.
Further search indicated a transcript of an academic record from Blue Crest University belonging to Elvis Osapolo. Going through the search again, detectives discovered a letter of English proficiency from the said college and a letter of recommendation from the same Blue Crest College.
Reports said that upon interrogation, the suspects made useful statements to the police and confessed that they never got any admission into the school, that they procured the degree certificate through the help of a female Nigerian resident in Ghana.
The suspects further stated that their goal was to get Ghanaian resident permits, as students which they got.
Police sources further stated that the suspects confessed that they were made to pay 15,000 Ghana cedis (N1.5 million) for the certificate and 5,000 Ghana cedis (N500,000) for the resident permit. They reportedly paid a total of 26,000 Ghana cedis to procure the documents.
On further interrogation, they said they were doing it to evade arrest in Ghana since they don’t have any means of livelihood.
According to the suspects, whenever police intercepted them, they showed their passports that they were students and had no means of livelihood in that country.
They further confessed to the police that they were into online romance scams and provision of foreign bank accounts for fraudulent transactions through “Facebook bombing”.
The suspects said: “We meet people online and present ourselves as American soldiers by name Captain Donald Rowe, whom we are impersonating on Instagram. He is a captain of the United States of America and on a peacekeeping mission in Syria.
“While we are engaging our victims, we will tell them that there are goods in Syria that if they are interested to buy, they should pay money and we will send the goods to you. We will show them pictures of good materials in Syria.
”After they make the payment, we use our block chain wallets to collect the money or foreign bank accounts, which at last, are being credited in our Nigerian accounts. We have our partners in the UK, South Africa, and other countries and most of our victims are from Japan, Denmark and China.”
Sources said the police have written to the Ghanaian High Commission to get more information about the result and their alleged accomplices in Ghana said to be spearheading the fraud.
They have also spread their dragnet through the International Police, Interpol, to round up their foreign partners.
The suspects who claimed they were only able to attend secondary schools in Benin City lamented the fate that befell them stating that it was poverty and the need to make ends meet that drove them into fraud.
