    Police debunk viral video on poor training conditions

    Force Headquarters on Saturday, clarified that the recent video in circulation depicting police recruits undergoing training in substandard conditions with inadequate food provisions and welfare was an old report dated over 10 years ago.

    This was contained in a statement made available to reporters in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, FPRO, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

    According to the statement: “The video, which was originally a special report released by Channels Television, dates back over ten years and reflects the training environment at the Police Training College in Ikeja during that period”.

    It clarified that: “The then Federal Government leadership responded to the call and carried out repairs in the college and improved on the feeding condition of police trainees”.

    The statement added: “Since then, the Nigeria Police Force has experienced various leadership changes, resulting in considerable advancements and development in all areas”.

    The Police raised the concern that: “The recirculation of the video seems to be a deliberate act to create a wrong impression of the police system and, most likely, the handiwork of mischief makers to malign the police authority”.

     “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Dr Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the dedication of the Force to the excellent training of police recruits and the welfare of personnel in general,” the statement read.

    The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Saturday faulted the unauthorized use of official uniforms and accouterments by an online personality Martins Otse, popularly known as ‘VDM,’ in a video posted on his social media platforms.

    The Force unequivocally disassociated itself from the unauthorized portrayal and has launched a full investigation to determine the source of the Police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted.

    A statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: “It is important to remind the public that the unauthorized use of Police uniforms, insignia, or accouterments constitutes a criminal offense, as stipulated in Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, and is subject to strict penalties.

    “While the Nigeria Police Force recognizes and supports the creativity of young Nigerians in the content creation space, we strongly caution against the misuse of Police uniforms or symbols. Unauthorized use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated”.

    Inspector arrested for allegedly killing popular Enugu musician

    Enugu Police Command has announced the arrest and detention of a police inspector serving in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the command for allegedly murdering Enugu traditional Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah. 

    It was gathered the musician attended an event at the anti-cult office on Friday evening when policemen at the station started shooting indiscriminately with the bullets hitting him in the process.

    According to the spokesman of the Command, Daniel Ndukwe, Igbo Jaa was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead. 

    His body has been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

    The police spokesman noted that the commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to conduct a full-scale investigation that will facilitate prompt and appropriate disciplinary actions against the police officer.

    The Commissioner empathised and consoled the victim’s family, friends, and associates, describing the unfortunate incident as unacceptable. 

    He assured that the police officer and anyone else found culpable will be sanctioned in line with the law to serve as a deterrent.

    CP Kanayo urged everyone connected to the victim to remain calm and cooperate with the police to ensure that justice is served.

    Our correspondent reports that the police quick announcement of the arrest of the inspector might have saved the situation as some group of youths within Obiagu area of the state capital on Saturday morning, mobilised for protest, burning tyres in the road before the information emerged the alleged killer had been arrested.

    Police will collaborate with CJTF to tackle insecurity – CP

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has expressed readiness to collaborate with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) to address the growing insecurity in the nation’s capital.

    This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, during an emergency meeting and the unveiling of the CJTF operation office in Abuja.

    The Commissioner, represented by Mr. Usman A. Abini, the APO District Police Officer, praised the efforts of the CJTF in filling the gaps left by manpower shortages within the police force.

    “The challenges that we’ve always had in terms of manpower and visibility are always bridged by the presence of the CJTF,” Abini said.

    He further emphasised the commitment of the police to work closely with the CJTF.

    “We are always ready to synergise with you and work with you in the operational field, administration, and any other area that will improve the lives of our citizens,” he added.

    The CJTF’s collaboration with the police has been most visible in joint operations in various parts of the FCT, particularly at night, in areas such as the APO division.

    According to the Commissioner, these partnerships have been instrumental in boosting security and curbing criminal activities.

    “The CJTF is very close to the members of the public, which has been invaluable in our operations,” Abini noted, highlighting the role of the task force in gathering intelligence and engaging with communities.

    Speaking at the event, the National Chairman of the Civilian Joint Task Force of Nigeria (CJTFN), Prof. Muhammed Kailami, emphasised the importance of national unity and security.

    “Nigeria’s unity is a task that must be done, and that is what we are after,” he said.

    Kailami described the CJTF’s work as a sacrifice, noting that members are unpaid volunteers working with both the police and the army to ensure safety.

    He expressed hope that the government would formalise the CJTF’s role in the future by providing salaries and equipment.

    Outrage as policemen beat, detain NSCDC officer in Osun

    Condemnation has trailed the beating and detention of a officer of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) by policemen in Osun for preventing them from allegedly invading an estate without arrest warrant and means of identification. 

    The Nation gathered policemen in mufti attempted to invade Elizabeth Estate via Osun State Secretariat on Wednesday for arrest but the NSCDC officer on duty denied them entry over questionable identity. 

    A source in the estate said: “Policemen from Ataoja came to our estate for arrest without warrant and the NSCDC urged them to provide one, else he won’t allow them in. It resulted to altercation where 20 police reinforced to the scene and they beat him up and injured two residents brutally.” 

    Reacting to the incident, spokesperson of Osun NSCDC, Kehinde Adeleke, condemned the act of the police operatives.

    She confirmed the arrest of its officer by policemen, adding that his uniform was torn while he was handcuffed, arrested and detained at Ataoja Police Command. 

    The Osun Police spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola confirmed the incident, saying, “the NSCDC officer beat up two of our men and deflated the tyres of their vehicle.” 

    But convener of Dialogue 365, Comrade Waheed Saka, berated the police describing the act as barbaric. 

    He said: “There are rising cases of police brutality in Osun State lately. The recent extrajudicial activities of police may result to another massive protest against police.”

    Police confirm death of former ExxonMobil staff, personnel in A’Ibom

    The Police Command in Akwa Ibom has confirmed the death of a former ExxonMobil staff in Villa Marina Hotels and also its personnel  in Tevoli Hotels in Eket.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Eket,  Akwa Ibom.

    She said the contractor to  the multinational oil company died on Sunday while the police officer died on Oct. 14.

    John however could not disclose to NAN the names of the victims at the time of filing this report.

    “The former ExxonMobil staff died at the Hotel in Eket, he died as a result of slipping when he came out from the bathroom and fell and  hit his head on the tiles,” John said.

    John said that necessary investigation had been done and the police have released the corpse to the family for burial.

    She said that the police officer who came from Lagos to Eket on an official assignment died of heart failure.

    The police on Friday debunked a recent article on scandal and corruption titled: “Nigeria Police Force dace funding Scandal: N15,000 Allocation for three nonths sparks corruption concerns.”

    A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said:”Contrary to the referred published report that Divisional Headquarters receive no budgetary allocation and that officers rely solely on unofficial sources of funds for operations, including bail payments, the Police Authority maintains that Divisional Police Officers receive statutory funding based on established allocations from the Federal allocation coupled with support from their respective State Governments.

    “Any contrary assertion as contained in the publication is not only false but a calculated attempt to run down the system and discredit the police authority.

    “Subsequent upon the highly misleading and scandalous publication, the Inspector General of Police has ordered an immediate investigation to identify those responsible for this deliberate misinformation. While we acknowledge that inadequate funding has long been a challenge for the police, the current government has demonstrated commitment to increasing funding to enhance operations and improve policing capabilities and overall effectiveness.

    “The funding situation, in recent times, has begun to show notable improvement with promising prospects for further enhancement in the upcoming year.

    “The Nigeria Police Force thereby reiterates its commitment to the principle of transparency in the course of discharging its duties and warns mischief makers to desist from attempts to detract and malign its progress, as the Force will not permit malicious individuals to continue to disparage the institution or slander its dedicated officers who toil day and night to secure our nation”.

    Motorcyclist dies, passenger injured in Lagos truck collision

     A motorcyclist died on Wednesday morning occurred at Area B, Point Road, inward Airways Lagos in a collision with a Dangote truck. 

    The motorcyclist died instantly while the passenger sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

    According to eyewitness reports, the collision took place at a busy section of the road. 

    The driver of the Dangote truck and assistant fled the accident scene immediately.

    Police officers from Area B Command were promptly notified and arrived at the scene to manage the situation.

    The lifeless body of the motorcycle rider was evacuated by the police while the truck was apprehended and taken to the Area B Police Station for further investigation.

    As of the time of this report, efforts were underway to locate the truck driver and assistant. 

    The injured passenger, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, is receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
