E-CMR system: 612 stolen vehicles recovered by police

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has recovered 612 stolen vehicles.

The recovery of the vehicles was made possible through the use of the new Electronic Central Motor Registry (E-CMR).

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed this in a statement issued on the use of the E-CMR.

Adejobi said the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an immediate investigation to dismantle the syndicate responsible for the hijacking of the vehicles.

The first batch of seven stolen vehicles reported through the E-CMR platform was flagged for investigation, with three of them already recovered.

One of these vehicles, stolen from Abuja, was traced to Ilorin, Kwara State, and returned to its rightful owner last weekend.

The statement further revealed that, in addition to the recovered vehicles, the E-CMR portal has exposed 1,610 vehicles with conflicting information, all of which have been referred for further investigation.

Speaking on the success of the E-CMR initiative, the Police emphasized that the system aims to drastically reduce vehicle theft and related crimes.

The public has responded positively, with more vehicle owners registering their cars on the platform.

The transition from the manual CMR system, which had been in place for decades, to the digital E-CMR is expected to improve vehicle tracking and recovery.

Adejobi said: “Vehicle owners are encouraged to provide their information via the Police portal at https://cmris.npf.gov.ng and report stolen vehicles through https://reportcmr.npf.gov.ng“.

He explained that one stolen car from Abuja was recovered after the buyer applied for a CMR certificate, triggering an alert that flagged the vehicle as stolen.

Subsequent investigations revealed the vehicle had been re-registered twice in an attempt to conceal its stolen status.

Adejobi said: “The Police are collaborating with other agencies to enhance the security of vehicles nationwide and urge vehicle owners to obtain their CMR certificates for easier recovery in the event of theft”.

He said the E-CMR is easy to operate, urging vehicle owners to take advantage of the process to curb the menace of car theft.

Delta police warn P.O.S operators against aiding kidnappings

The Delta police command has warned Point of Sale (POS) operators on the risks associated with processing large transactions that could be linked to criminal activities, particularly kidnappings.

This followed the arrest of a POS operator who allegedly received ₦4,000,000 on behalf of kidnappers.

The police command in a statement by its image maker, Bright Edafe, a Superintendent, stressed the dangers of handling transactions exceeding ₦500,000.

According to him, POS operators could unknowingly become accomplices in ransom collection, jeopardising both their business and personal freedom.

Part of the statement reads, “My message to POS operators is clear: any transaction above ₦500,000 can get you into serious trouble. Don’t be a tool for kidnappers to collect ransom, as such transactions must be traced back to you.”

Edafe pointed at a recent case in which the arrested operator facilitated the transfer of ₦4 million to kidnappers, earning ₦40,000 as her commission.

It added: “She received ₦4,000,000 from kidnappers, and her profit was just ₦40,000. Can you imagine? Be wise. You may argue that you are just doing business, but before your lawyer gets you out, you may spend some time cooling off in prison.”

He urged POS operators to exercise caution and diligence when handling large sums, warning that failing to do so could lead to serious legal repercussions.

The latest arrest highlights growing concerns over the role of POS operators in facilitating ransom payments for kidnappings.
