    Police chief honours woman investigator

    Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has honoured a superintendent of police (SP) Mariam Ogunmolasuyi for her investigative prowess.

    Her gallantry, crime bursting skills won her a nomination as one of the best three police investigators.

    She is the only woman officer nominated in that category at the police award and commendation ceremony.

    Ogunmolasuyi was presented with a certificate in recognition of her professionalism, discipline, dedication to duty and performance in crime detection.

    As Officer-in-Charge of Anti-Piracy Unit, Zone-2 Command Onikan, Lagos, Ogunmolasuyi has given the zone a new lease of life.

    Criminal elements have had to turn a new leaf or take their negative lifestyles out of the zone.

    Ogunmolasuyi is a graduate of University of Lagos (UNILAG), with a Bachelor’s in Cell Biology & Genetics and Master’s in Criminology.

    She joined the Police April 19, 2010, as Cadet Asp II.

    She won IGP medal for courage, 2012; Most Outstanding Police Officer Award by Junior Chambers International, 2012; National Orientation Agency (NOA) Civic Responsibility Medal, 2012; Presidential Medal for Gallantry and Courage from President Goodluck Jonathan, 2013; Crime Buster Woman of the Year by TM News, 2023, among others.

    No fewer than 29 suspects were on Wednesday arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court for their involvement and roles in the aborted invasion of the Oyo state government secretariat on Saturday, April 13.

    They were arraigned on a seven-count charge bordering on treasonable felony, unlawful society, illegal possession of a firearm, going armed and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

    The offences, according to the Investigative Police Officer, Bakare Rasaq, an Inspector with the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, are contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo state of Nigeria, 2000.

    The number rose by eight additional suspects following the initial parade of 21 suspects by the Oyo State Police Command.

    The case with charge number Mi/520c/2024 is between the Commissioner of Police and 29 suspects.

    The case came up for mention in Court 1 before Chief Magistrate Mrs O.O. Ogunkanmi.

    The names of the defendants include Ayanwale Rofiat ‘F’, 25yrs; Ismaila Adepoju ‘M’, 45yrs; Ayanwale Saburi ‘M’, 28yrs; Adeola Elegbede ‘M’, 27yrs; Fatoki Anthony ‘M’, 34yrs; Olalere Mathew ‘M’, 54yrs; Isaac Friday ‘M’, 27yrs and Ismaila Malomo Peter ‘M’, 65yrs.

    Others are Farumbi Wasiu ‘M’, 30yrs; Muritala Abefe ‘M’, 40years; Adeyemo Joseph ‘M’, 29years, Adeyemo Peter ‘M’ 75years; Adesokan Hameed ‘M’ 37years; Adejumo Lateef ‘M’, 60years; Ogundeji Alabi ‘M’, 55years, Ayoola David ‘M’, 40years; Ojo Olufemi ‘M’, 52years; Ajani Ezekiel ‘M’, 42years and Amos Oluwaseyi Ogundeji ‘M’, 45years.

    The list also includes Ademola Adeniyi ‘M’, 29years; Salaudeen Wahab ‘M’, 56years; Dosumu Toyin ‘F’, 65years, Abiona Esther ‘F’, 78years; Omoyajowo Funsho ‘F’, 64years; Tola Olufemi ‘F’, 60years; Oritola Alabi ‘M’, 44years, Kayode Fakeye ‘M’ 45years, Taiwo Titilayo ‘F’, 58years and Yusuf Adebayo ‘M’ 67years.

    The charge sheet reads in parts: “That the defendants “and others now at large, on the 13th April, 2024 at about 8:30 am, at Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan in the Ibadan Magisterial District did conspire with one another to commit felony to wit: treasonable felony, unlawful society, going armed and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

    “On the same date, time and place in the aforementioned mentioned magisterial district did unlawfully form an intention and manifest the intention to forcefully remove the democratically elected Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr.  Seyi Makinde during his term of office invaded the State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan with arms and declaring the birth of Yoruba Nation and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 41(b) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

    “That the defendants and others at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did unlawfully belong to a group of people declaring the birth of Yoruba Nation which is an unlawful society and thereby committed g an offence contrary to Section 62 and punishable under Section 64 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

    “That the defendants and others at large, on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did unlawfully go armed in the public with guns, cutlasses, charms, and knives without lawful occasion in such a manner as to cause terror to Executive Governor of Oyo State Engr. Seyi Makinde and the public and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 80 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

    “That the defendants and others at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did conduct yourselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by going armed in the public and declaring the Yoruba Nation and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 249 (d) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo of Nigeria, 2000.

    “That the defendants and others at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did conspire with one another to commit felony to wit: unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 6b of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap RII, Vol. 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

    “That the defendants and others at large, on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did unlawfully have in your possession five English Pump Action guns, three locally made barrel guns, 405 rounds of live cartridges, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 3 of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap RII, Vol. 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

    A mild drama played out in the court when one of the defendants collapsed during the session while the charges were being read.

    She was immediately attended to and came back alive when water was poured on her by a combination of police officers and court officials.

    No plea was taken as the court ordered that the defendants be kept in the Correctional facility.

    Ruling on the case, Chief Magistrate Ogunkanmi adjourned the matter till August 1, for a hearing.

    Imo police arrest kidnap suspect, recover stolen vehicle

    Operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit of the Imo State Police Command have apprehended a suspected kidnap kingpin, Aralu Chukwudi Charis (40), of Otolo, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    The suspect was arrested on April 13 following a raid of his hideout in Mgbidi, Oru East. The operation was led by CSP Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa, followed credible intelligence.

    The suspect, who was paraded yesterday at the command headquarters in Owerri, is said to have masterminded several kidnapping and robberies in the state.

    Command’s spokesman Henry Okoye said: “On searching his hideout, one Toyota Camry (MUS 509 DS Lagos), reportedly snatched from a victim, was recovered. In the course of investigation, he confessed that he is the leader of a deadly criminal syndicate, and also provided crucial information that will assist in the arrest of his members at large.”

    Okoye added that the suspect would be arraigned in court after investigation.

    The Kwara State police command has arrested 46 persons in connection with cult clashes in the state.

    According to the command, rival cult group clashed at the weekend leading to the death of one person.

    Police spokesperson Toun Ejire-Adeyemi said: “Suspected cultists attacked and killed one Adelodun Farouq (36), a resident of Eleran compound. He was buried according to Islamic rites without the police’ knowledge.

    “Preliminary investigations indicate that one Abubakar Gobir, a member of the Ayee confraternity, was involved in the crime. Later on that evening, reports surfaced of further cult activities in Ile-Alawo compound, Center Igboro.

    “Unidentified cultists allegedly assaulted Abdullahi Alao, a 35-year-old motorcycle rider. Alao was taken to an unknown location by his younger brother.

    “On April 14, another suspected cult attack was reported in Baboko, Ile Onimago, Adabata, and Eruda. Miscreants engaged in a violent confrontation using weapons such as broken bottles and stones, leading to the blockage of Baboko Road. Swift action was taken by the DPO of C Division and six patrol teams, supported by men of the community policing, were mobilised to quell the situation.

    “During the operation, 46 suspects were apprehended and handed over to the command’s Anti-Cultist Unit for further investigation. Of the 46 suspects arrested, 14 have been linked to the recent cult activities in the Ilorin metropolis.”

    The Adamawa State Command of the Nigeria Police has arrested 15 young people identified to be part of the cult known around the state as Shila Boys.

    Nine handsets were recovered from the suspects in a fashion that strengthens their link to ‘Shila Boys’ as the dreaded young men are phone snatching specialists.

    They are routinely picked up in groups of three, five, or more by the police, found always with stolen phones, cash, and such other light items, and with the knives and daggers that they readily use to force their desired items from the owners.

    On the latest arrest, the state Police Command said in a statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Suleiman Nguroje, that nine mobile phones, a POS machine, some dangerous weapons, and some hard drugs were recovered from the suspects.

    The statement named the suspects as Abdullahi Shuaibu,18; Auwal Saleh, 18; Usman Abdullahi, 21; Auwal Isah, 20; Usman Ahmadu, 32; Muhammad Abubakar,18; and Jamilu Hassan, 19.

    The others are Abdulsalam Abdullahi, 20; Salisu Umar,19; Yahya Umaru, 25; Salahudeen Auwal,18; Yusuf Ahmed, 20; Jamilu Sani, 18; Abraham Joel, 18; and Muhammad Auwal, 19.

    The Police said the 15 suspects were arrested during the Sallah celebrations of Wednesday and Thursday mostly within the metropolitan  Yola South and Yola North LGAs and the environs.

    According to the police statement, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, appreciates the good people of Adamawa State for their collaboration in the fight against armed robbery, housebreaking and violent crimes by radical ‘Shila’ cult group.”

    Police profile attacker who fatally stabbed six people

    Detectives are investigating the life, background and associates of a man who killed six people during a stabbing attack at a busy Sydney shopping centre.

    The 40-year-old was shot dead by a senior police officer inside Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday afternoon, after setting upon several people inside the complex with a knife and triggering an evacuation.

    Six people were killed, including four women and one man who died inside the centre, and another woman who died in hospital.

    Eight injured people, including a nine-month-old baby who has since undergone surgery, remain in Sydney hospitals after being rushed there by ambulance.

    Acting Premier Penny Sharpe told ABC Radio Sydney three other people presented to hospital for injuries overnight.

    Many shoppers sheltered in locked stores while scores of others ran to the closest exit of the shopping centre, one of the biggest in Sydney.

    Witnesses have described panic and confusion inside the centre as the seriousness of the situation became clear.

    Late last night, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb revealed that although the formal identification process has not been completed, police believe they know who the attacker is.

    “We know a little bit about this person,” she said.

    “If it is the person we believe it is, we don’t have fears for the person holding an ideation — in other words, that it’s not a terrorism incident.”

    Police raids IPOB/ESN hideout, kill 2

    Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have raided the hideout of IPOB/ESN in the Akwuke community of Enugu South LGA, killing two members of the gang.

    Force Public Relations Officer, (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi who disclosed this on Friday while parading various suspects involved in crimes across the country said the operatives were met with high resistance by these unscrupulous elements but were subdued due to the superior firepower of the operatives.

    Adejobi said, “Two IPOB criminals were killed, one AK-47 rifle was recovered, one SubMachine Gun (SMG), one stainless Pump Action Gun (PAG), 27 live and 23 expended rounds of 7.62mm calibre of ammunition were recovered, and also five live cartridges.”

    The police said investigation revealed that the breech number of the AK-47 had been wiped off but still, the magazine bore the Nigeria Police Colour, which must have been carted away during attacks on Police Formations.

    Also, in other operations, the Police operatives of the Jigawa State Command in conjunction with local vigilantes acting upon credible intelligence stormed the Dangoli Fulani Camp of Kiyawa LGA and arrested two suspects in connection with a case of culpable homicide & robbery.

    The suspects are Bello Usman and Musa Babangida all of Kiyawa LGA Jigawa State.

    Exhibits recovered are two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, 68 rounds of live ammunition, one constructed leg chain, eight handsets, and one Boxer motorcycle with Reg No. LSR 206 QP, ECOWAS Passport belonging to one Mu’azu Abubakar, cash sum of N221,000), five SIM cards, one solar panel.

    Police investigation revealed that the arms were the ones used to carry out the robbery that claimed the lives of three innocent persons in Birni Kudu Town, while the suspects confessed to the alleged crimes.

    Adejobi said: “Now, turning to recent crime-fighting achievements: within the period under review, we have recorded the arrest of 385-armed robbery suspects, 238 kidnapping suspects, 341 murder/homicide suspects, 87 suspects connected with the unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, 143 rape suspects, 151 cultism suspects and have recovered 143 various firearms, 741 ammunitions of various calibers, recovered 72 stolen vehicles and rescued 461 kidnapped victims across the country.

    “On 29/2/24 at about 10:30 PM, armed bandits with sophisticated weapons blocked Marabar Bangori along Gusau-Funtua Road in Faskari LGA Katsina State, and attacked a Ford vehicle with Lagos Reg NO. KTU-317 DH conveying passengers, en route Gusau to Kaduna and driven by one Abba Lawal ‘m’ 26yrs with intent to kidnap them. Upon receipt of the report, operatives mine rushed to the scene, and engaged the bandits in a gun duel, leading to the rescue of the driver and all 8 passengers, all from Nasarawa State. The rescued victims have been reunited with their families.

    “On 4/3/24 a team from Operation Zenda JTF invaded an arms manufacturing hideout at Amahundu, Nanev, Kwande Local Government area of Benue State and arrested the following suspects: (1) Terer Terfa aka Gadafi ‘m’ 24yrs (2) Aonddonaugen Tse-aa ‘m’ 36yrs (3)Torkuma Lorlaha ‘m’ 27yrs (4) Hangeior Atim ‘m’ 25yrs, (5) Tyav Terwase ‘m’ 35yrs (6) Gundu Gbagbogum ‘m’ 50yrs (7) Terwase Shimashan ‘m’ 20yrs (8)Terese Terver aka Gbatiir ‘m’ 18yrs and (9) Adinga Ramseydihno ‘m’ 33 yrs from Cameroon. Exhibits recovered from them include 8 Barretta Pistols under fabrication, 1 AK-47 rifle, 10 AK47 live ammunition, 5 Beretta pistol ammunition, four (4) welding gas cylinders, and other fabrication materials. All suspects confessed to being involved in the manufacturing of illegal arms and ammunition.”

    Police arrest six over vandalism, others

    Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested six suspects, namely Kabiru Muhammed, Aliyu Usman, Abdulmalik Alhasassan, Shafi’u Suleiman, Suleiman Ibrahim, and Raymond Mailabari, who is an AEDC staff.

    Raymond Maliabari allegedly connived with others to vandalise and steal a transformer.

    All the suspects are male of Tipper Garage, Mpape, Abuja.

    They were arrested on April 11, 2024 at about 10:45pm, through credible intelligence.

    The suspects were trying to escape with an already vandalised transformer they had loaded on a crane truck in Maitama, when police operatives swooped in and apprehended them.

    According to a statement issued on Friday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh: “The vandalised transformer, a crane truck, a blue-coloured Mercedes Benz with Reg No. PKN 497 XA, a white-coloured J5 bus with Reg No. RBC 228 XC, and an ash-coloured Peugeot 406 car with Reg No. GSN 13 AA belonging to the AEDC staff were all recovered.

    “While the investigation is still ongoing, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, psc, mni, wishes to reiterate his commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the Territory.
