    Police arrest man who faked own kidnap to defraud brother in Abuja

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command one Saturday, January 20, described as fake news claiming an alleged kidnapping incident at River Park Estate, Abuja

    FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh said in a statement that one Nnandi Agu of Games Village only faked his own kidnap in an attempt to defraud his brother who lives within the said Estate.

    Adeh, who disclosed that the suspects is in police custody said: “The FCT police Command is aware of the news making rounds about an alleged kidnapping incident at River Park estate in the early hours of today (yesterday) and wishes to state that contrary to reports, nobody was kidnapped in River Park Estate.

    “One Nnandi Agu ‘m’ of Games Village only faked his own kidnap in an attempt to defraud his brother who lives within the said Estate.

    “The suspect is currently in police custody undergoing interrogation.

    “While investigation is still ongoing, further development would be communicated to the public.”

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Special Intervention Squad (SIS), has taken over a major route in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council, used by bandits to transport their victims out of Abuja into neighbouring states of Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, and Kogi.

    The Commander SIS, who is a Commissioner of Police, Ben Igwe, told reporters in Abuja while taking other SIS squad and reporters around the routes. 

    He said: “This route where we are is the bandits’ route. From Oshafa here, they move through this route and go to Pappe, from Pappe they’ll enter areas like Maitama or Asokoro.

    “So, when they pick someone this is the route they pass through. If the picked someone from Maitama or Asokoro or Pappe, they’ll go towards the back of Paipe. From this position that we are, if you move forward, you’ll be surprised how we’ll descend into Maitama. 

    “This is their route. What we have done now is to deploy a lot of intelligence on this route because we have a lot of intelligence at our disposal. This is one of their major routes, we are inside their route now.”

    He assured residents of FCT that they are doing everything possible to dislodge the kidnappers.

    Igwe called for the cooperation of Bwari residents to further achieve positive and needed result.

    Police raid Enugu kidnapper’s hideout, arrest three, recover eight guns

    Operatives of the Enugu state police command has raided a criminal hideout, arresting three suspected kidnappers.

    The command, which disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, said the operation was carried out on Friday January 19, in the Centenary City area of Obeagu-Awkunanaw community in Enugu South local government area, following credible information made by the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA).

    It was gathered that the criminal elements and cohorts at large had been using the location, a huge block industry, as a hideout for the design and consequent perfection of their criminal activities, including armed robbery, kidnapping, among other crimes, within Enugu metropolis and environs.

    According to the spokesman of the state police command, Daniel Ndukwe, the operational exercise led to the arrest of three male suspects, namely: Emmanuel Nwabundo aged 39, Emmanuel Eze aged 35, and Anthony Onoche George aged 30, while others escaped. 

    He added that eight pump action guns with four (4) live and twenty-six (26) expended cartridges were recovered.

    “Other exhibits recovered include one (1) machete, four (4) units of solar-powered CCTV cameras, thirteen (13) assorted phones, one (1) DVD player, and four (4) bags and clothes, all suspected to be stolen. Also recovered are objects suspected to be charms”, he said.

    Ndukwe disclosed that the suspects shall be arraigned in court once investigations were concluded.

    Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, while hailing the operatives for the operational success, reaffirmed the avowed commitment of the command to be more proactive and forward-looking in its quest to rid Enugu State of unrepentant criminals and their unwholesome activities.

    The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Saturday, January 20, paraded sixteen suspects terrorizing Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and other parts of the country. 

    Two of the suspects Idris Isiaku and Dahiru Salihu, were arrested by men of the IGP Intelligence Response Team (IRT), after the launching of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) by the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, to wipe out terrorists in the FCT.

    The suspects who said they have been in Bwari and working as farmers and security guards, say they use the opportunity as security guards to monitor the activities of residents, especially the rich ones, and report to their colleagues in the bush before carrying out the kidnapping.

    The suspects also revealed that they get paid after such operations.

    Parading the suspects in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the arrest of the suspects comes in response to the pressing need for enhanced security measures in the nation’s capital.

    Recall that since late last year, several cases of kidnapping and killings have been recorded in the FCT, especially in the Bwari community.

    Adejobi said the launch of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) by the Inspector–General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun at the Force Headquarters comprising highly trained personnel equipped with advanced technology and resources of the force also made it possible for the suspects to arrest the suspect in their various hideouts.

    Adejobi maintained that the force would not relent in the fight against crimes and criminality in the country. 

    The Force PRO said ammunition of all kinds and valuables were recovered during the operations.

    Supreme Court judgment: Police arrest 38 protesters in Lafia

    The Police Command in Nasarawa says it has arrested 38 protesters in Lafia for alleged public disturbance over the recent Supreme Court judgment which upheld the election of  Gov. Abdullahi Sule of the state.

    The suspects were immediately charged to court and remanded at the Lafia Custodial Centre.

    They were charged before the Chief Magistrates’ Court 3 Lafia for the offense.

    When the matter was mentioned for hearing by the prosecuting counsel, Danjuma Allu, the Chief Magistrate, Mohammed Abdullahi Lanze, reserved the ruling on their bail application to Monday.

    Earlier, Illiya Ashokpa, defense counsel, applied that the court should grant them bail, but his application was turned down.

    The protesters comprised five males and 33 females.

    Drama in court as police whisk away accused charged with malicious damage

    There was a mild drama at the Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, over the whisking away of a 45-year-old woman, Esther Maduka, who was brought to court to be arraigned for alleged breach of peace and malicious damage.

    Maduka, a trader at the popular Swali market, Yenagoa, was arraigned by policemen attached to Azikoro Divisional Police Command on two counts of alleged breach of peace and malicious damage against one Osigwe Jude.

    Esther was alleged to have committed the offence on December 28, last year, at shop D8 Swali Market.

    She allegedly told one  Mr.Osigwe Jude that she would chase him out of the market in no distant time. She was also alleged to have maliciously damaged an Alamco swing door valued at N670,000 property of Osigwe Jude.

    Her alleged offence were said to be punishable under Sections 186 and 378 of the Criminal Code Law Cap C14, laws of Bayelsa State, 2006.

    While the defendant was brought to the Magistrates’ Court and her charge sheet prepared, policemen on the order of a Commanding Officer of the Monitoring Unit of AIG Zone 16, whisked her away to the shock of police prosecutors and court workers on duty.

    It was also learnt that when the Presiding Magistrate entered the court and was briefed, he became furious and ordered that the defendant be brought back to court to face the charges.

    Sources close to the matter claimed that a top police officer in the Monitoring Unit of AIG Zone 16 allegedly threatened to deal with a female lawyer, Judith Otobo and the complainant, Osigwe Jude, for filing the case against the defendant despite his instruction that the case be withdrawn from the Azikoro Division and brought to the AIG office.

    The complainant, who is also the Chairman of the Igbo Traders at the Swali Market, claimed that since the incident and the alleged police threat, he had abandoned his residence.

    “I am afraid for my life and that of my brothers. Since the onslaught against me by this woman, I have been detained three times unlawfully by the police,” he alleged.

    Speaking on the development, the spokesperson for Zone 16 AIG command, CSP Ikwo Kevin, said she had not been briefed and that the police authorities would look into the matter.

    Police rescue kidnapped Imo monarch, arrest suspect

    The Police Command in Imo State yesterday said that security agencies have rescued the kidnapped former Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Ohiri.

    The traditional ruler was abducted by gunmen in his palace about two weeks ago as the state celebrated a crime-free yuletide season. A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Henry Okoye, confirming the monarch’s rescue said that the kidnappers abandoned him in a forest while they were being pursued by security forces.

    Okoye said: “The command has been working assiduously in synergy with other security agencies towards ensuring that Eze Ohiri is released and some arrest had been made.

    “The command will continue to work towards stamping out all forms of violent crimes in the state. As CP Danjuma Aboki reaffirms the command’s resolve to work harmoniously with the military and other security agencies in stamping out violent crimes in the state,” he said.

    Police ordered to pay Abiola’s widow N50m damages

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Gudu, Abuja, has ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to pay N50 million in damages to Prof. Zainab Duke Abiola for violating her rights.

    Prof. Abiola is the widow of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M. K. O.) Abiola.

     The police, Inspector Teju Moses, and Ibrahim Baba (son of former IGP Usman Alkali Baba) are the other defendants in the suit.

     The claimant demanded N500 million in damages.

     Mrs. Abiola had alleged the police arrested her in a nightgown, tortured, and detained her.

     She claimed that her detention, between September 20 and September 23, 2022 without charge, violated her rights and was unconstitutional.

     Justice Modupe Osho-Adebiyi held that the applicant’s detention without arraignment grossly violated her right to personal liberty.

     The judge directed the IGP and the other defendants to tender a public apology to Prof.  Abiola in two newspapers.

     In the certified true copy of the Enrolled Order, dated: November 29, 2023, which our reporter obtained yesterday, Justice Osho-Adebiyi declared the applicant’s detention from September 20 to 23, 2022 as unlawful and unconstitutional.

     She added: “It is further declared that the arrest of the applicant by the defendants in her nightgown without giving her the opportunity to dress decently is an infringement of her right to personal dignity.

     “It is more debasing and a further infringement of her right to personal dignity when the applicant was paraded in her nightgown.

    “In the circumstances, the sum of N50 million only is awarded to the applicant as compensation against the first, second, and fourth respondents jointly.

     “The respondents are hereby ordered to tender a public apology to the applicant in two of the national daily newspapers in pursuance of the provisions of Section 35 (6) I of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”
