    Police, Army, Navy  lauded on  Jos Polo tourney’s  feats

    The Nigeria Polo Federation (NPF) has commended the Nigerian Police Polo Association, Nigerian Army Polo Association and the Navy for their unflinching commitment in the promotion of the noble game within and outside the country.

     NPF made this commendation through its 1st Vice President Alhaji Tanko Ayuba at the just concluded 2023/2024 Jos international polo tournament where both the Police and the Army teams finished their campaigns in flying colours.

    The Col. Y. Bello –led Nigerian Army team successfully defended the President Cup after defeating the ambitious Kano Gilaso team 6-5 in a closely fought final while the Police team finished Runners-up winners in the race for the NASCO Cup prize.

    Ayuba who expressed the delight of the polo ruling authority at the end of year meeting in Jos, thanked the Armed Forces for being such a steadfast and enduring partner in the promotion of the game in the country.

    “The management council of NPF is very pleased with the police authority, military forces and other upcoming paramilitary organizations for embracing the game of polo and for choosing the sport as their respective major sporting activities”” he said.

    The Special Guest of Honour, the Emir of Bauchi, HRH. Dr.  Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu who spoke on behalf of other monarchs, also commended Jos polo club for using the game of polo as a tool to consolidate the new found peace in Plateau State  and for initiating a charity support for the less privileged in Plateau State.

    He  said the hosting of the noble game for peace and charitable efforts which would ultimately restore Jos as the home of tourism to its revered status as home of tourism , was highly commendable and worthy of emulation.

    True to its cutting-edge competition, the prestigious 2023/2024 Jos Winter polo festival lived up the billing with home crowd favourites extend their supremacy to a record six times back-to-back champions, defeating Fifth Chukker from Kaduna and Keffi Ponys to the biggest prize, coveted Governor’s Cup.

    Malcomines powered by the President of Jos Polo Club, Murtala Laushi, Malcomines capped  a glorious year of victories that stretches from Kano, Kaduna, Keffi, Bauchi and Yola during the outgoing 2023 season.

    Other top winners of the glamorous year-ending festival that attracted over forty teams, include former champions Kaduna Trappco who returned to winning ways carting home the Imani Cup, while Senator Ahmed Wadada was sensational winning the Unity Cup with his Keffi Pony team.

    Murtala Laushi who emerged the Best Patron of the year 2023, said  the finals for all the major prizes were the most competitive and the most exciting in years.

    Police operatives from Utako Police Divisional Headquarters have arrested a couple involved in ‘one chance’ robbery. 

    The trio of Chukwudi Okorie ‘m’ 51 years, Chibuzor Okorie ‘f’ 43 years both husband and wife and Esther Gabriel ‘f’ 38 years all residents of Akaraka Gwagwa, FCT, were arrested in connection with series of robberies, specifically ‘one chance’ activities within FCT and its environs.

    A statement issued yesterday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said: “During interrogation, suspects confessed to have carried out series of ‘one chance’ related activities in the FCT before their arrest.

    “A blue Mazda car with registration number FCT 590 EV, an operational vehicle used by the syndicate to perpetrate their heinous acts, was recovered from one of the suspects.

    “While investigation is still ongoing to apprehend other accomplices, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Haruna G. Garba, wishes to reiterate his unflinching commitment to ensure FCT remains a safe and peaceful place for residents to stay without fear from any quarter of the territory.

    Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has warned that the ‘no gree for anybody’ slogan being used by youths can lead to crises in the country.

    The ‘no gree for anybody’ catchphrase has gone viral on social media platforms and on the streets.

    The slang loosely means ‘do not tolerate any form of nonsense from anybody’.

    During a news briefing, the force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said intelligence reports show that the catchphrase is capable of plunging Nigeria into a crisis of monumental proportion.

    He said although the catchphrase is being seen as “normal talk”, those in the security community view it as a “dangerous” slogan. “The new slogan for 2024 for young people is ‘no dey gree for anybody,” Adejobi said.

    “We have been informed from our intelligence that this is coming from a sector that may likely cause problems across the country.

    “No dey gree for anybody is being seen as just normal talk. In the security community, we have seen it as a very dangerous slogan that can trigger crises.”

    S/Court judgment: Police assure Kano residents of security

    Kano state Commissioner of Police, Hussaini Gumel, on Thursday, January 11, assured residents of security of lives and property during and after the anticipated Supreme Court decision on Friday, January 12.

    He said that armed security personnel would be in all identified strategic locations to ensure they embark on surveillance duties and provision of physical security during and after the judgment.

    Calling on residents to cooperate and share actionable intelligence information with the security personnel, Gumel disclosed that the Command deployed its personnel to work with other security agencies in ensuring crisis-free moments before and after the Supreme Court judgment on the state’s governorship election.

    Gumel, who held a meeting with heads of security agencies in Kano on Thursday, said police and other security operatives have mobilised sufficient armed personnel to provide security at all flashpoints.

    The police commissioner listed the flashpoints to include political party offices, Government House, INEC HQ, Banks, Commercial Areas, mosques, churches, recreation centres and motor parks.

    Gumel said the security measures would enable residents of the state to move on with their legitimate businesses without threat to lives and property.

    He explained that already Operational Order with specific roles to all the security personnel had been issued to Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers across the 44 local government areas of the state.

    “We have mobilised sufficient armed personnel to provide security at all flashpoints, including political party offices, Government House, INEC HQ, Banks, Commercial Areas, mosques, churches, recreation centers and motor parks before, during and after the judgment.

    “I am giving 100 per cent assurance to all law-abiding residents of the state to go about freely with their legitimate daily activities without threat to lives and property,” the police commissioner said.

    Police remove DPO over lawyer’s illegal detention

    The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Gowon Estate Division, in Lagos State, has been removed for allegedly detaining a lawyer who was seeking justice for his client.

     The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the removal in a statement on Wednesday.

     According to Hundeyin, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, ordered the immediate removal of the officer from the division.

     He said that this followed the conclusion of investigations into the allegations made against the DPO, as published in the media on Jan. 4.

     He said that the DPO would be removed pending a review of his case by other supervisory authorities.

     “The CP had earlier ordered a thorough investigation into the matter upon receipt of the publication.

     “CP Fayoade has equally directed the OC Legal of the Command to initiate steps to reach out to the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos State Branch to enable a round table discussion.

     “The meeting is towards preventing a recurrence of the avoidable incident and enhancing better Police-Lawyers relationship,” he said.

     The spokesperson said that the command would continue to uphold the rule of law and sanction any officer found wanting.

     The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a Lagos-based lawyer, Olumide Sonupe, was hospitalised after detention by the police.

     Sonupe was seeking the bail of his client at the Moshalashi Police Station in the Alimosho area of the state on Dec. 30, 2023.

    Police deny alleged kidnapping of 200 in Abuja

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command has refuted reports of an alleged kidnap of 200 people in Bwari and Kuje Area Councils.

    Police described the figures as mischievous and misleading.

    A statement issued on Wednesday, January 10, by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh said: “The FCT Police Command is aware of the news making rounds about the alleged kidnap of over two hundred persons between 23rd December 2023 to 4th January 2024, in Bwari and Kuje Area Councils.

    “Consequent to the above, the Command wishes to categorically state that there are pockets of abduction of persons in the communities mentioned, but the figure is being escalated to create fear and apprehension in the populace.

    “The Commissioner of Police, FCT in a continued effort to enhance the security of the residents and prevention of pockets of abduction, on the 3rd January 2024, visited communities in Bwari. During these visits, he engaged with community leaders, assessed security situation/ arrangements, and took proactive measures, by deploying additional police personnel and armoured police vehicle (APC) with effort in place to extend the same to other communities in the FCT. Despite these efforts, concerns have been raised about perceived inactivity.

    “However, revealing detailed security strategies emplaced in the above-mentioned communities publicly poses a risk to their effectiveness.”

    She said the FCT Commissioner of Police (CP), Haruna Garba has urged the citizens to exercise restraint in sharing potentially misleading or mischievous posts, as he reiterates his commitment to rid FCT of all forms of criminality.

    “He equally calls for cooperation with the police, as it will undoubtedly contribute to a safer and more secure environment for all. He equally urges the populace to keep up rendition of distress call and report suspicious activities.”

    Police parade suspects in Plateau killings, others

    Three suspects linked with the Christmas eve attacks on Plateau State communities were yesterday paraded by the police.

    Sophisticated arms seized from them were also on display. 

    Close to 200 people were killed during the multiple attacks on communities in Bokkos Local Government and Barkin Ladi Local Government areas of the state.

    The killing generated a nationwide outrage and criticism from Nigerians.

    According to the police, the suspect are: Ahmed Suleiman, Balikisu Aliyu and Aboki Samuel.

    The police listed arms and other items recovered from them as follows: one ash-coloured golf car, one AK-47 rifle, one AK-49 rifle, 1000 rounds of live ammunition and five magazines.

    They promised to fish out other suspects involved in the attacks.

    Suspects in the attack on a supermarket in Nasarawa State, near the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), during which four people, including a staff member of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was killed, were also paraded by the police, whose spokesman,  Muyiwa Adejobi, briefed reporters.

    Adejobi, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)  said the arrests were made by a combined team of the police working in collaboration with other sister agencies.

    Adejobi said: “We present a comprehensive briefing on several significant operations conducted by the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Department Tactical Teams – FID-IRT and FID-STS.

    “These commendable operations have led to the arrest of dangerous criminals involved in various heinous crimes and recoveries of illicit arms and ammunition as well as other items across the country.

    “I am pleased to inform you that a total of 67 suspects who were arrested by the gallant operatives of FID-IRT and FID-STS, some of whom are already facing prosecution for the various cases for which they have been indicted; 5,454 rounds of different calibre of live ammunitions, 300 live cartridges, a total number of 68 rifles, 19 different brands of vehicle, 4 motorcycles, 23 daggers/swords, 50 empty shells of ammunition, 8 different make of handsets, 1 POS machine and 33 different ATM cards were recovered and marked as exhibits for the prosecution of the various cases. “Our efforts geared towards the apprehension of these heinous criminals are paying off.

    “The very first of such instances that we will be bringing to your notice today is the Yuletide period attack on some villages in Plateau State. Recall that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun,  was in Plateau State to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas, emplacing tactical strategies to bring to book the perpetrators of the attack.

    “These strategies are already yielding results, as three (3) suspects who are members of a gunrunning syndicate linked to the attacks have been apprehended and are currently in police custody assisting with the investigation”.

    On the Nasarawa killings, Adejobi said: “When the operation was to be carried out, they put off the CCTV Camera, which means there must be an insider who was conspiring with these elements.

    “We have commenced our investigation. The CP Nasarawa is on the matter. And we are helping them with necessary support to make sure we dig deep into that matter and we apprehend all those involved in that criminal act.

    “We want to assure the people of FCT that the Force Headquarters is working with them and IGP will continue to support them so that we can make FCT safe for all of us”.
