Lecturer alleges police extortion of 200 level student

    • By Rabiat Abdullahi

A lecturer of Prince Abubakar Audu University has given a detailed eyewitness account of an alleged case of police extortion and abuse of power that occurred during a roadside stop while he was travelling in a commercial bus.

According to the lecturer, the incident occurred when the bus was stopped at a police checkpoint along a major highway in Enugu environ. Police officers reportedly began searching passengers and their belongings.

He stated that one of the passengers, identified as a 200-level Law student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), was singled out after officers allegedly found nothing incriminating on him. The officers reportedly proceeded to search the student’s mobile phone and claimed that an application found on it linked him to cyber fraud.

The lecturer said he intervened to question the basis of the allegation. Following this, he was allegedly described by the officers as an accomplice to the supposed offence. Both the student and the lecturer were then informed that they would be taken to a police station for further investigation.

However, the lecturer stated that instead of proceeding to any station, the officers stopped midway and continued their checks. During this period, the officers reportedly examined the student’s mobile banking applications and discovered a balance of N98,000 in one account and N1,000 in another.

According to the lecturer, the student was pressured and intimidated into taking an instant loan to up the money to N200,000 through a mobile application. The loan was reportedly withdrawn through a nearby Point-of-Sale (POS) operator and handed over to the officers.

The lecturer further alleged that the officers then demanded a sum of N500,000 from him. He said he informed them that he did not have such an amount and requested the return of his phone, explaining that he had an urgent matter to attend to. While making a phone call, the officers reportedly listened in and questioned him about his profession.

He mentioned that upon stating that he is a doctor, the officers’ attitude changed noticeably. They  became more respectful and subsequently allowed both him and the student to return to the bus and continue their journey.

As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the officers involved and the police formation responsible for the checkpoint have not been established. Attempts to obtain official comment from the victim was unsuccessful.

The lecturer stated that he made the account in good faith and is willing to provide further details, including the location and timing of the incident, to relevant authorities if required. The incident has once again raised public concern over allegations of extortion and rights violations at highway checkpoints, particularly during festive travel periods.

  • NBA, police clash over tinted glass permit

NBA, police clash over tinted glass permit

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF)  yesterday told the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) that no court order restrained the police from enforcing the Tinted Glass Permit policy.

Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) Benjamin Hundeyin, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said this in Abuja while addressing reporters on NBA’s threat to institute a contempt suit against Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

The NBA had issued the threat following the reintroduction of the tinted glass permit enforcement on Monday, after its suspension in October.

The Force PRO said the court order, being widely cited, merely directed that the status quo be maintained at the time it was issued, when enforcement of the policy was already in effect.

“We would like to put this on record. At no point did any court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the tinted glass permit policy,” Hundeyin said.

The FPRO explained that the injunction did not grant the request seeking a halt to enforcement.

“What we have is people misinterpreting the last court document that was issued. That injunction spoke about maintaining the status quo. I don’t want to go into technicalities.

“At the time that order was given, enforcement was ongoing, and the court said the status quo should be maintained. In fact, the court stated specifically that the request by the lawyer who approached the court, seeking that the enforcement be stopped, would not be granted at that point. The document is out there. So, the status quo meant that enforcement, which was already ongoing, should continue,” he said.

Hundeyin explained that the subsequent suspension of the policy was not based on any court directive but resulted from consultations between the IGP and the NBA.

“However, we later had a meeting with the NBA, where the IGP decided to take the path of care, listening and concern, and consequently directed that the tinted glass permit policy be suspended. That suspension was not based on any court order.

“It was based on the Nigeria Police Force being responsible and responsive to the yearnings of the people, and responsive to the appeal by the NBA,” Hundeyin added.

The NPF spokesperson stressed that no timeline was attached to the suspension, adding that the Force had anticipated that the court case would be concluded within the period.

“When we announced that suspension, there was no time frame attached to it. At no point did we say it would last until a specific time.

“We simply suspended it at that point. In fact, we hoped that the court case would have reached a logical conclusion within that period. If you recall that statement, we said the policy was suspended to give Nigerians room to regularise their documentation and to await the outcome of the court case,” he said.

Beaming light on the decision to reinstate enforcement, Hundeyin said the prolonged legal process had created a security vacuum that criminals were exploiting.

“The case has dragged on, and during that period, criminal elements have confidently used tinted vehicles to perpetrate crimes,” he said, citing an incident in Benin City, Edo State, about two weeks ago.

“Just two weeks ago in Edo State, the police attempted to stop a Lexus SUV with fully tinted windows. The occupants refused to stop, and a pursuit ensued.

“When the vehicle was eventually stopped, it veered to a corner. As the police approached, the occupants opened fire on the officers. One officer died instantly — an inspector of police. They were able to do this easily because the vehicle was fully tinted. From the outside, you could not see that they were armed. This and many other cases underscore the issue. The mandate of the police is to protect life and property. We will not fold our arms and watch things degenerate,” he said.

Hundeyin also spoke on the NBA’s contempt threat, saying the police would respond through its Legal Directorate once formally served.

“We are yet to be served with any court papers. We will not act based on what you have just told us. Once any papers are served, we have a Legal Directorate.

“Once the papers arrive, we will respond accordingly. For now, it is hearsay, and I will not speak on hearsay,” he said.

Addressing concerns over revenue from the tinted glass permit process, Hundeyin stated that the current system differs significantly from the old manual process, as it is fully digital and hosted on a secure government platform.

“This system is a departure from the old tinted permit system, which was manual and paper-based. This time, the process is entirely online through a secure website,” he said.

Hundeyin added that the fees charged are used to maintain the database, security infrastructure, and advanced technology required to safeguard sensitive personal information.

“To operate a website or database that stores confidential information, such as phone numbers, NINs, home addresses, and dates of birth, you need additional layers of security. These do not come free or cheap,” Hundeyin said.

The FPRO said the system allows Nigerians in the diaspora to submit biometric data remotely, including photographs, facial scans, and fingerprints, stressing that such technology requires continuous investment.

“Security certificates, such as SSL and firewalls, require yearly renewal. Some may be one-off payments, but many require annual renewal.

“We are protecting Nigerians’ information with these advanced systems, and these systems require ongoing maintenance. That is what the fees are for—to run and sustain the database. It is not a money-making venture or a revenue-generating drive. It is about ensuring safety and security for Nigerians,” he said.

Hundeyin dismissed claims that the policy or its payment process was unlawful, stating that all necessary approvals were secured before implementation.

He said: “You can see that the website is a government website — posap.gov.ng. If anything were illegal, it would not carry a .gov.ng extension. The Federal Government itself created the website. All aspects of the system—the process, from beginning to end—were ratified by the government before it was launched.”

Police arrest 10 suspects in gun, drug crackdown

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested ten suspects across Plateau, Adamawa, Kaduna, Zamfara, Lagos, Ondo, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in a series of coordinated intelligence-led operations targeting gunrunning, drug trafficking, and kidnapping networks.

The operations led to the recovery of a total sum of N150,000, alongside the seizure of 19 firearms, including seven AK-47 rifles, three pump-action guns, two single-barrelled guns, two Beretta pistols and four locally fabricated revolver rifles.

Also, 189 rounds of live ammunition, magazines, assorted cartridges, and large quantities of illicit drugs, including 24 bags of Indian hemp and other controlled substances, were confiscated.

The achievements were disclosed on Tuesday by the force spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who provided an overview of the arrests, recoveries, and ongoing investigations linked to the coordinated operations.

Operatives of the Force Intelligence Department carried out the operations—Intelligence Response Team, which relied on sustained intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, surveillance, targeted interception, and follow-up investigations to dismantle interconnected criminal supply chains spanning multiple states.

Providing details, Hundeyin said the operatives moved into Plateau State on September 9, 2025, following credible intelligence that led to the arrest of Adamu Zaki Babangida, a suspected gunrunner. A pump-action rifle was recovered at the point of arrest.

Further investigation resulted in the recovery of four locally fabricated revolver rifles in the same state on October 23, 2025, as investigators intensified efforts to trace other members of the syndicate.

On October 23, 2025, intelligence tracking unlawful firearm possession led to the arrest of Chibuke Nnaji in Plateau State, where a fake gun permit was recovered.

Follow-up investigation linked the document to Joshua Izang, also known as Buffalo, whose arrest resulted in the recovery of a pump-action rifle, two single-barreled guns, and live cartridges, with further suspects still being traced.

Operatives arrested Daudume Bayina in Adamawa State on October 26, 2025, after weeks of intelligence gathering.

Hundeyin said his arrest led to the recovery of “two Beretta pistols, ammunition, and magazines, while investigation revealed that the weapons were intended for delivery to a border community and that the suspect had operated as an arms supplier for over a year.”

Ongoing investigations into arms supply networks resulted in the arrest of John Magah and Ishaya Stephen, whose activities were linked to the provision of weapons to bandits operating around the Adamawa and Cameroon border axis.

“An AK-47 rifle, a pump-action gun, ammunition, and cartridges were recovered, while the investigation showed that one of the suspects was involved in gun fabrication and sales spanning several years,” he said.

On November 2, 2025, operatives working with the Department of State Services intercepted a vehicle in Kaduna State and arrested Ifeanyi Egbeke.

The operation led to the recovery of tramadol, codeine, injection syrups, hypnos tablets, and Indian hemp.

Investigation revealed that the drugs were supplied to criminal groups across Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto states through a wider distribution network still under investigation.

He continued, “Intelligence tracking gunrunning routes into bandit enclaves led operatives to Birnin Tasaba village in Zamfara state, where Salisu Mohammed, also known as Mande Dawa, was arrested.

“An AK-47 rifle, magazines, and 32 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from a concealed millet bag, while investigation showed long-term involvement in arms delivery to bandits along the Obajana axis of Kogi State.”

Operatives also intercepted a trailer travelling from Lagos to Abuja and arrested Uchenna Ikpe after discovering 24 bags of Indian hemp concealed in the vehicle.

The suspect disclosed that he was to be paid N150,000 for transporting the drugs, while the investigation continues to identify those behind the shipment.

In a related operation in Kaduna State, Yunana Iliya, also known as Bado, was arrested following intelligence indicating active arms dealing and kidnapping-related activities.

Five AK-47 rifles and 150 rounds of live ammunition were recovered, while the investigation linked the suspect to a broader criminal conspiracy involving arms supply and child abduction, with other suspects currently at large.

Hundeyin stated that investigations remain ongoing across all cases to dismantle remaining networks and recover additional weapons and illicit substances linked to the arrested suspects.
