Police apprehend two suspected traffic robbers in Lagos

The Police Command in Lagos State has apprehended two suspected traffic robbers for allegedly terrorising motorists on the Ojota–Ketu corridor.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed this in a post on her X handle, @AbimbolaShotayo, while responding to a motorist who had earlier raised an alarm over a surge in traffic robberies on the Ojota Bridge.

The motorist’s account shared on X detailed a frightening encounter with four suspected robbers on Thursday between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., which he said occurred as he was driving toward the Motorways area with his daughter.

According to him, three of the men approached his vehicle when traffic came to a standstill and made repeated attempts to smash his side windows.

“The first attacker, whom I believed to be the gang leader, brandished a weapon, though I could not determine whether it was a gun.

“Another suspect used his fist in the first attempt to break the glass before producing stones from nowhere, which he hurled at both the side glass and the rear window beside my daughter.

“My daughter was terrified, and I managed to escape by switching lanes as soon as traffic inched forward, I just thank God the glass did not give way,” he said.

He added that he barely slept afterward, as the traumatic incident replayed in his mind.

The motorist also disclosed that a similar attack occurred at the same location on Sunday, though it was less severe because the traffic was moving.

He noted that police officers, who were usually stationed on the bridge to provide security, were absent on both days of the attacks.

Responding to the report, Adebisi stated that the Command’s Intelligence and Tactical Operatives swiftly launched an operation and apprehended the suspects on Dec. 8, within 24 hours of receiving the complaint.

“The suspects were caught in the act and have confessed to harassing motorists in the area. They are now in police custody as investigations continue,” she said.

The spokesperson reiterated the command’s call for public cooperation in combating crime, stressing that if you see something, say something, and expressed gratitude to residents for their vigilance and continued support.

Police conduct pre-deployment training on child protection in armed conflict

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has concluded a week-long Pre-Deployment Training on Preventing the Recruitment and Use of Children in Armed Conflict, held at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The programme was officially opened by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, represented by AIG Aminu Baba Raji, AIG Training and Development. The training equipped officers with skills in child-sensitive policing to enhance their effectiveness during internal security operations.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, “The programme was delivered in partnership with the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security, featuring international facilitators and certified Nigeria Police Trainers-of-Trainers. Officers were trained to detect and prevent child recruitment and to recognize that children associated with armed groups are primarily victims deserving of confidentiality, empathy, and protection.

“In his remarks, the IGP stressed that children remain among the most vulnerable in situations of violence and that their recruitment by armed actors, whether as fighters, spies, or in other roles, is a grave violation of their rights and a threat to national security. He emphasized the need for officers deployed to conflict-affected areas to identify these risks and respond with professionalism, sensitivity, and gender-responsive approaches.

“The training further strengthened existing Nigerian Police child-protection initiatives such as the Safer Schools Programme and POCACOV. A total of 25 officers were certified as ready for deployment to conflict-affected areas.

“IGP Egbetokun expressed appreciation to the organizers for their support and assured that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding human rights and enhancing child-protection capacity through continuous training and strong partnerships”.

Police, DSS, military rescue seven kidnapped victims in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has crushed a notorious kidnapping operation following the dislodgement of a criminal camp and the rescue of seven abducted victims in a high-risk, cross-border security raid.

The dramatic operation was triggered by a distress call received by the Police on December 5, 2025, reporting that heavily armed kidnappers had invaded a community in Ushafa, Abuja, and whisked away several residents under the cover of darkness.

Following the development, a joint security task force made up of operatives from the FCT Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Nigerian Army, and the Department of State Services (DSS) swung into action on December 6, launching a coordinated manhunt for the abductors.

Guided by credible intelligence, the security team traced the suspects’ movements through the outskirts of the Mpape community and onward into settlements linking the Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

A statement issued on Sunday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said, “On 5th December 2025, the FCT Police Command received a distress report that armed men had invaded a community in Ushafa and abducted several residents. In a swift response, a joint team comprising operatives of the FCT Anti-Kidnapping Unit, alongside personnel of the Army and the DSS, mobilized to the area on 6th December 2025 and immediately commenced a coordinated search operation.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the team traced the suspects through the outskirts of Mpape community and into settlements extending towards the Kagarko LGA of Kaduna State. Upon sighting the security operatives, the kidnappers opened fire, engaging the security team in a fierce gun duel. The operatives returned fire with superior force, successfully dislodging the criminals from their hideout and rescuing one victim, who was found in their custody.

“Demonstrating remarkable gallantry, the joint security team continued the pursuit for over seven hours across difficult mountainous terrain. Their efforts led them to the suspects’ camp in Kweri Forest, Kaduna State, where another exchange of gunfire ensued. The sustained pressure forced the kidnappers to flee, prompting the operatives to rescue an additional six victims. All rescued victims were immediately taken to the hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition”.

Adeh said the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, has commended the bravery and professionalism of the operatives.

He has ordered the deployment of additional manpower along the identified corridors to proactively deter further incursions by kidnapping syndicates into the Federal Capital Territory.

Insecurity: Ondo Police command outlaws knockouts, bangers for festive season

The Ondo State Police Command has banned the sale and use of fireworks – commonly known as knockouts and bangers – as the Yuletide season approaches.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, announced the ban during his weekly lecture and address to officers and men of the command held in Akure on Friday.

CP Lawal expressed concern over the increasing cases of false alarms and staged kidnapping incidents aimed at extorting money.

According to a statement issued in Akure by the command’s spokesman, Olayinka Ayanlade, the police chief explained that the decision became necessary because fireworks often cause unnecessary panic and could be exploited by criminals to mask their activities.

“In alignment with the ongoing security assessment and national considerations, the Commissioner announced a ban on the sale and use of fireworks throughout the festive season,” the statement read.

CP Lawal reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property before, during, and after the Yuletide.

He warned that acts designed to create panic or undermine security operations will be decisively dealt with.

To reinforce the command’s preparedness, the CP expressed satisfaction with the level of operational readiness and alertness of officers across the state.

He directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to take firm control of their jurisdictions to ensure a smooth and secure festive period.

CP Lawal also ordered intensive patrols, intelligence-led raids on identified black spots, and strategic deployment of covert operatives to enhance intelligence gathering and early threat detection.

Appreciating the continuous support of the Inspector-General of Police, Lawal restated the command’s resolve to work closely with other security agencies to sustain the security gains in the state.

He further instructed all DPOs to ensure proper personnel deployment, removal of road obstructions, and smooth flow of human and vehicular traffic as part of the festive security arrangements.

As part of his message to the public, the CP advised motorists and road users to exercise restraint, remain vigilant, and avoid excessive speeding to prevent avoidable accidents.

He assured residents and travellers of their safety across highways, hinterlands, and waterways throughout the season, describing security as a collective responsibility.

The command reiterated that it remains resolute and will not allow any individual or group to jeopardise the peace and security currently enjoyed in Ondo State.

    Owo council also bans fireworks

In a related development, the Owo Local Government has also placed a ban on the sale and use of fireworks – including bangers and knockouts – throughout the Christmas season.

The announcement was made in a statement by Tolulope Adeyefa, Media Assistant to the Acting Chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Hammed, on Friday.

The directive followed a security meeting where council officials and stakeholders agreed on the need for tighter measures to maintain public safety.

Security operatives have been instructed to enforce the ban across all communities, with offenders expected to face legal sanctions.

The council added that it is strengthening collaboration with security agencies to safeguard lives and property during the celebrations.

Hammed appealed to residents to remain alert and cooperate with authorities to prevent security breaches. He also extended festive goodwill to the people of Owo, urging them to celebrate responsibly.

  • Police presence

    Police presence

•This goal must be pursued wholistically

Prompted by an intensified national security crisis, President Bola Tinubu’s recent order to withdraw about 100,000 police officers from VIP protection so they can “concentrate on their core police duties” was an appropriate response.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement, said: “In view of the current security challenges facing the country, President Tinubu is desirous of boosting police presence in all communities.’’ VIPs requiring protection will now be assigned armed operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps instead of police officers, Onanuga added.

He also stated that Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police personnel and that the Federal Government is working with states to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.

Later, the President, while declaring a security emergency, said the police “will recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing the total to 50,000.” He also called on the National Assembly “to begin reviewing our laws to allow states that require state police to establish them.”

It is widely known that Nigeria is seriously underpoliced, which is a critical factor undermining security across the country. The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has an estimated strength of 371,800 officers, serving a population put at 236.7 million people in 2024.

According to a November 2025 report published by the European Union Agency for Asylum, “more than 100,000 police officers were assigned to the protection of politicians and VIPs, rather than to tasks serving the general population,” thus compounding insecurity.

The deployment of a disproportionate number of police officers to politicians and VIPs across the country has long been an issue of public concern. It continued despite directives aimed at redressing the situation, issued by the police leadership at different times in the past.

Following the President’s intervention, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun ordered the IGP Monitoring Unit and Commissioners of Police X-Squads to ensure strict monitoring and compliance. They are to arrest any officer found escorting VIPs. Egbetokun said over 11, 566 officers will return to “frontline duties” as a result of the presidential directive, adding that “policing capacity will improve.”

There is no question that the enforcement of Tinubu’s directive is crucial. The challenge of implementation demands political will and professional resolve.

Notably, a retired deputy inspector general of police, Zanna Mohammed Ibrahim, argued that the police force needs urgent reforms for the successful implementation of the President’s directive. He stated that some IGPs had issued the same order in the past but lacked the structural support to enforce it.

Ibrahim further noted that VIP protection “has become an economy” in the force, describing it as a “cash cow” that generates revenue streams for officers, making the structure extremely resistant to reform. He listed the beneficiaries of such protection, including politicians, businessmen, entertainers, expatriates, religious figures, malls, banks and private individuals “seeking status.”

His deep insider knowledge of police operations makes his observations and recommendations noteworthy and useful. Apart from the necessary political will, he suggested steps for the success of the policy. He advised the authorities to: Publish a list of withdrawn officers; Deploy them to stations, patrols and intelligence units; Establish an NSCDC-based VIP Protection Service; Ban direct escort requests to the IGP or Commissioners of Police; Digitise all VIP security requests.

Other suggestions are: Introduce penalties for illegal escorts; Reward officers returning to active policing; Conduct surprise audits of formations; Launch a national policing-reform communication campaign; Use community policing to fill temporary gaps.

These call for a thoroughgoing institutional overhaul: dismantling the old system; building the new system; and sustaining the change.

It is important to ensure the implementation of the presidential order. But, more importantly, it is necessary to envision and emplace a reformed police force.
