    SAN-nominee seeks establishment of police pension board

    A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)-nominee, Olayiwola Afolabi, has urged members of the National Assembly to intervene in the bill for a law to establish the police pension board and remove the police from the contributory pension scheme, which was passed by the 9th National Assembly, to ensure efficiency and transparency.     

    Afolabi, a Benin-based philanthropic legal luminary, made the admonition in a letter to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

    He noted that after the initial passage of the bill into law by the last National Assembly, it was taken to the then President Muhammadu Buhari for assent, but it was not signed.

    The Ekiti State-born senior lawyer, who would soon be confirmed, along with other shortlisted SAN-nominees, reiterated that most security agencies had pulled out of the contributory pension scheme, leaving the commissioner of police down to the least officer in the police force as members of the scheme.

    Afolabi urged members of the current National Assembly to quickly do the needful and ensure that the bill was eventually signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, after some portions would have been corrected, in order to put smiles on the faces of police officers, currently being enslaved by the contributory pension scheme.

    The constitutional lawyer also said signing the bill into law would reduce corruption in the Nigeria Police Force.

    The Lagos State Police command has advised the public, especially those who lost their  vehicles to theft or parked around the city to report at Central Police Station, Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos, for identification and claim within 21 days or they would be auctioned.

    The Police Command in Ogun on Tuesday in Abeokuta said it arrested 124 suspected criminals who perpetrated various offences from July 11 till date.

    Mr Abiodun Alamutu, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun, disclosed this when he brought before newsmen some of the suspects at the Command’s Headquarters.

    He said the command achieved the feat in collaboration with other sister security agencies in the state.

    “The command had discovered through credible intelligence the suspects’ hideouts, attacked them and had their weapons confiscated.

    “The command equally recovered a reasonable number of exhibits from the suspected criminals.

    “During interrogation, it was gathered that they have been involved in offences such as armed robbery, cultism, rape, murder and kidnapping,” Alamutu said.

    The Commissioner of Police stated further that there had been a remarkable decline in the record of sundry cases of crimes in the past three months.

    He added that the state had experienced a noticeable decrease in incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, land-grabbing, sexual offences.

    ”There has been a decline, except for the recent cult-related crisis/murder which was recorded in Sagamu.

    “So, we are closing up on the perpetrators.

    “I therefore reassure the people of Ogun that the command under my watch will continue to make the state uncomfortable for all criminal elements, especially cultists and land-grabbers,” Alamutu said.

    The Commissioner of Police pledged to relentlessly fight crime to a standstill, saying the state had however been relatively peaceful under his watch.

    “However, the window of renunciation is still open to those willing to quit their membership of various cult groups and other acts of crime.

    “My admonition goes to parents/guardians to sensitise their wards to steer clear of crime and tendencies of crime,” he said.(NAN)

    Police detain two phone snatchers arrested in Yola

    Operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command have apprehended two teenage boys, Suleiman Shuaibu and Abdulazeez Sani, following an incident where they allegedly robbed a woman of her phone while brandishing a knife.

    The youths were turned over to the police by concerned residents who witnessed the event on Tuesday, October 10.

    Suleiman is 25 years old, while Abdulazeez is 14.

    The suspects, identified as part of a group known as “Shila Boys,” notorious for theft in Adamawa State, targeted a woman near the Jimeta Modern Market in Yola.

    They brandished a knife, demanded her bag, and stole her phone but unknown to them, vigilant residents had been observing.

    As the teenagers tried to make their escape with the stolen item, the community members intervened, apprehended the young thieves, and promptly turned them over to the police.

    The Nation reports that this was a case that could have led to jungle justice, a few of which Yola has actually witnessed in the past, leading to the killing of a number of these boys who appear to be waxing stronger these days.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Suleiman Nguroje, speaking on the latest Shila Boys incident, said the boys were in Police detention.

    “Investigations are continuing. The suspects will be prosecuted as they may be found liable,” the Police spokesman assured.

    Police arrest 1,005 suspects with 853 cases in Katsina within four months

    Katsina State Police Command  has announced the arrest of 1,005 suspects in connection with 853 cases in Katsina within four months from June to September.

    The command spokesman, Abubakar Sadiq Aliyun, who disclosed this yesterday in Katsina while briefing reporters, said 395 cases were being prosecuted in courts of law in the state.

    Parading some of the suspected criminals yesterday at the Police Command headquarters in Katsina, Sadiq said the command in the last four months also arrested 53 suspected armed robbers, 82 suspected kidnappers, 73 murder suspects and 90 suspected rapists.

    He said: “A total number of 707 suspects were arrested for various offences such as criminal force, intimidation, hard drugs, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, cultism, and inciting disturbance, among other offences.”

    “The command has succeeded in rescuing over 171 kidnap victims, neutralised five suspected kidnappers and recovered the following exhibits: four numbers of AK47 rifles, six locally made guns, 517 live rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, over 600 suspected rustled animals, 12 suspected motorcycles and vehicles 17 suspected stolen phones, 568 sachets of D5 tablets, 180 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 23 packets of exile tablets, 411 packets of remodel tablets and five packs of thiazole tablet.”

    We are working to reshape Police Force, Minister tells First Lady

    Minister of State for Police Affairs, Hon Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has stated the Police Affairs Ministry is working on bold initiatives aimed at addressing challenges and fundamentally reshaping the Force into a modern, responsive, intelligence-driven and technology-based institution. 

    She spoke on Monday in Abuja during a meeting with the First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu. 

    While welcoming the Minister, who was accompanied by senior female police officers, Mrs Tinubu stated that efforts to reshape Nigeria and address societal ills plaguing the female gender require active participation of women.

    Noting with pride the fact that a large number of women are actively involved in policing and securing the country, the First Lady said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given more room to women to contribute their own quota to national development.

    ” It is the beginning of a new dawn for women in the country as the current administration will give women more room to contribute their quota. I am also looking for ways to contribute. We can not have a Nigeria without people doing new and great things,” she stressed.

    On how the senior female police officers and other women can help forge a better Nigeria,  Tinubu charged the Minister to lead the action in addressing some of the ills such as rape, child abuse, human trafficking and proliferation of baby factories, that affect them the most in the society.

    “Women must thrive and be empowered in a safe environment. We want to see our children not abused through crimes and maltreatment, rape of minors and children. There must be reduction in cases of human trafficking, organ harvesting and baby factory.”

    She added that she was looking forward to a day when a female will become the nation’s Inspector General of Police.

    Applauding the steadfast advocacy by the First Lady for setting the pace and advancing the interest of women in the country, Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted that gender equality, safeguarding of human rights and empowerment of women were key anchors of a just and fair society.

    According to her: “We are working on a bold initiatives aimed at not only addressing existing challenges but fundamentally reshaping the Nigeria Police into a modern, responsive, intelligence-led and technology-driven institution.

    Police arrest two over stealing of armoured cables in Yola

    The Adamawa state police command has arrested two young men over the theft of armoured cables in the capital, Yola.

    The suspects were nabbed for allegedly vandalising a power line and stealing armoured cables supplying electricity to a water treatment plant in Boronji, a residential community near the Government House, Yola.

    A statement from the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, named the suspects as Yohanna Suleiman, 25, and Emmanuel Joseph, 17.

    The statement said the two were arrested by police operatives attached to Dougirei Divisional Police Headquarters, Jimeta.

    The suspects are residents of Boronji.

    Nguroje, in the police statement released Monday afternoon, said operatives got to the suspects following a distress call from the manager of the water plant.

    He said: “The suspects conspired and vandalized armoured cables connecting light to the treatment plant, resulting in shutting down of water supply.

    “Investigation so far revealed that the suspects are collaborating with some yet-to-be-arrested receivers who benefit even more from the services of the water treatment plant.”

    The police spokesman said that the Commissioner of Police, CP Afolabi Babatola, warned those receiving such items to desist henceforth or prepare for the end result.

    He said the CP assured that the receivers of the cables in this particular case would be traced and arrested.

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command at the weekend confirmed that there were reported cases of abduction/kidnapping within the territory, which heralded swift response from the police.

    It said it has rescued and reunited some of the abductees back with their families.

    The command said it had arrested 11 kidnappers in the last one month, adding that investigation was ongoing.

    Some of the arrested kidnappers, according to a statement by the FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, are assisting the command to effect the arrest of fleeing members.

    However, Adeh said the figures/numbers in the news making the round are inaccurate and actually misleading, as they may incite panic in the public.

    She said: “The FCT Police Command is fully aware of the news making the round about abducted and kidnapped persons in the communities of the Federal Capital Territory.
