    • As Baba Lekki surfaces

As rogue elements within the Police Command continue to harass and extort money from innocent ladies under the guise of checking indecent exposure, snooper was sure that this criminal abridgement of fundamental human rights must come to grief very shortly. Either the women would organise themselves into an invading force or they would collectively invoke the ancient curse which would see many policemen reporting missing vital organs.

When snooper was contemplating this scenario, we did not reckon with the antics of the old hell-raiser and itinerant freedom fighter. Before then, the fear of the police was the beginning of wisdom for scantily dressed ladies.

Despite the strong retraction of the state government and the police that they had nothing to do with this ritual of medieval shame, the practice has continued with relentless and often comic ferocity. Snooper watched the police frisk some young women around Ikeja, and it was not a funny sight at all.

Police arrest man over homicide, intercept 36 bags of India hemp in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command disclosed that its operatives have arrested a man due to homicide in Abuja.

The FCT commissioner of police, Haruna Garba said this on Tuesday, October 3, during a press briefing while parading the alleged suspects before reporters.

Garba said: “On 23/09/2023 at about 2115hrs, one Mohammed Rabiu ‘m’ of Nyanya reported at Karmo Division that on the same date at about 2105hrs, he sent his boy one Benjamin to pick a phone charger for him from his car, when one Shaibu Ibrahim, attacked the said Benjamin and stabbed him severally on the body.

“The police operatives from Karmo Division swiftly mobilized to the scene and rushed the victim to the hospital where he was later confirmed dead.  The suspect was arrested and the jack knife used in committing the crime was recovered from him.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect and the complainant who sent Benjamin (the deceased) to pick his charger for him, actually have a similar type of Toyota Camry car, same colours and packed close to each other.

“The deceased mistook the suspect’s car for that of the complainant’s who sent him, hence tried to open the door when the suspect pounced on him without asking questions”.

He added: “On 03/10/2023 at about 0405hrs, Police operatives from Mabushi Division carried out a raid of criminal hideout at Gishiri Village. A total of thirty- six (36) bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp were recovered.

“In the same operation, one Bello Ahmed AKA Wizzy Bola, a notorious and wanted armed robber terrorizing Gishiri Village and its environs was arrested. Suspect will be arraigned in court at the conclusion of the investigation”.

The FCT Police boss refuted the story going rounds in the nation’s capital over the disappearance of male organs in some parts of Abuja.

Garba said: “The FCT Police Command has recorded over ten (10) cases of alleged disappearance of male organs across the Territory and the escalating incidents of mob action by irate youths. It takes the intervention of the Police Command to prevent the loss of life and property and restore law and order. Fourteen (14) suspects who claimed that their male organs had disappeared were taken to the Hospital where the Medical Doctor confirmed that their male organs were intact and active. Consequently, they were charged in court for giving false information and inciting public disturbance.

“I wish to seize this opportunity to appeal to the residents of FCT to warn their wards and children to desist from raising false alarm. In addition, they are enjoined not to resort to jungle justice or mob action as innocent lives may be lost in the process.

“In the same vein, I wish to advise residents of the FCT to be wary of the kind of vehicles they board. It is advised that they should board painted taxis from designated motor parks. It is risky to board an unpainted taxi otherwise known as ‘kabu-kabu’ as they may fall victim to these robbers known as one chance.”

  • Police: music industry glamorises drugs

    Police: music industry glamorises drugs

Lagos State Police Command has said the prevalence of substance abuse has made the work of policing more difficult.

It lamented that the music industry glamorised drug use.

Spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said this at the 2023 Press Week Lecture/Symposium, organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos chapel.

Urging stakeholders, especially the elderly, to help in the fight against drugs, Hundeyin said: “The music industry is not helping us in anyway. They glamorise drugs. Not all that glitters is gold.”

He said a lot of super stars were involved in drug abuse.

According to him, behind most crimes in the society, there is substance abuse or drug addictions among youths.

He said the command regularly arrested criminals and 90 per cent of the cases, the criminals blamed their actions on drugs.

“Drugs and their attendant problems are things that manifest in the society. We all know that there is a direct connection between drugs and crime.

“For us in the Lagos State Police Command, we have come to realise that the more there is drug use in the society, the higher the crime rate is.

“If drugs reduce in the society, crime too will reduce. Ordinarily, people will not go and commit crime until they use drugs,” Hundeyin said.

He told the youth that beyond crime, drug abuse messed up the future of youths and their health.

He said when musicians had health challenges, most times they would not want to go to hospital, but would rather invite a nurse to treat them at home “because they are using drugs.”

“Going to hospital will expose that and they don’t want people to know.”

On the way forward, the police spokesman said the media and other stakeholders had a role to play in portraying the ills and dangers of drugs in the society.

He lamented that elders who should be custodians of morals had been arrested on several occasions selling illicit drugs.

According to him, “it is painful when elderly parents come to beg for their children arrested for drugs.

“Encouraging drugs use will not help anyone. The elderly ones should be our mouthpiece. It is bad that elderly people are making these problems worse. We need to expose this.

“Our borders are quite porous; people bring in things, illicit drugs inclusive. The more we make noise about it the better.”

Hundeyin, who noted that the right policies and tighter borders could also help in addressing the menace, urged young ones not to experiment with drugs in order not to cut their lives short.

He enjoined the students and young Nigerians not to bow or succumb to peer pressure. “You should know what is good and what is bad.”
