Police, FFS probe Supreme Court fire

The Police Command of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the Inspection Investigation and Enforcement (IIE) Department have begun investigations into the cause of a fire that occurred yesterday at a section of the Supreme Court.

No casualty was recorded in the incident.

The apex court’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. Festus Akande, told reporters that an electrical fault caused the fire, which reportedly emanated from one of the chambers of the Justices and was put out with extinguishers.

Akande described as “fake news” a story making the rounds on social media platforms that there were casualties in the incident.

A source, who spoke in confidence, told our correspondent that the fire started around 6 a.m.

It was gathered that some workers who reported early for work detected the fire and raised the alarm.

Reacting to the incident in a statement yesterday in Abuja, the FCT Police Command’s spokesperson Josephine Adeh, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said: “On September 25, 2023 around 7 a.m, there was a fire at the Supreme Court.

“The situation is under control. The fire service and the police are on the ground. Only two chambers of two Justices were affected. At the moment, properties destroyed are yet to be ascertained; the cause of fire is still being investigated by appropriate authorities. Further information will be communicated later.”

Also, Federal Fire Service’s Controller General Jaji Abdulganiyu said the cause of the fire had not been ascertained.

A statement by the FFS Public Relations Officer (PRO) Paul Abraham said the agency’s controller general got a call around 7 a.m and promptly acted on it.

“Fortunately, the fire service has a fire station domiciled within the complex, which turned out the firefighting and rescue crew, with immediate effect, to the scene of fire.

“Also, a signal was sent to the nearest fire station at the State House Fire Station, also manned by men of the FFS for back-up firefighting…

“This operation was completed at 8:30 hours (8 a.m.) Nigerian time by the gallant firemen of the service and have since returned to base,” Abdulganiyu added.

He said fire investigators from FFS’s IIE department were investigating the causes of the fire.

    • By Halimah Balogun

The police has warned Nigerians not to patronise  a private vehicle registration platform, ‘VReg’, because it allegedly carries out tasks that are solely within the authority of the Nigerian Police Central Motor Registry (CMR).

The Force Public Relations Officer (PRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, gave the warning at a news conference at the state command headquarters in Ikeja. He said the police discovered the existence of the ‘VReg’ through intelligence. Adejobi emphasised that the company’s operations and conduct are unlawful and must stop immediately.

He said: “It is imperative to address certain issues in motor vehicle administration. The Nigeria Police Force’s Central Motor Registry (CMR) is a dedicated platform entrusted with specific functions that cannot be carried out by any other entity outside our institution. We have recently received intelligence regarding the existence of a platform called VReg, allegedly operated by a private company engaged in performing NPF CMR duties. This practice must cease immediately, as there is no legislative framework guiding such establishment.

“Motor vehicle registration and licensing are within the purview of the Nigeria Police Force, as our role is to acquire essential vehicle data for our repository, vital for national security.”

Adejobi said by giving thorough vehicle details and status, the CMR system plays a critical role in preventing crime. He added that this strengthens law enforcement efforts and acts as an effective deterrent against illegal actions.

We’ll deploy drones for polls, say Police

To forestall  security breaches, the  Police have assured voters of its preparation towards the November 11 governorship elections Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states.

Part of the security measures, to be deployed is the use of drone for proper monitoring and nipping likely violence in the bud, warning those that were planning to instigate violence to stay off the states.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, law enforcement authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a secure and peaceful electoral process.

Adejobi outlined a comprehensive strategy that includes the mobilisation of personnel, both uniformed and plainclothes officers, along with an array of anti-riot equipment.

Among the notable equipment to be deployed are teargas canisters, water cannons, and Armoured Personnel Carriers. However, introducing drones into the security apparatus marks a significant technological advancement in the effort to monitor and safeguard these crucial elections.

Adejobi stressed that the police have engaged in several meetings with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at a committee level, co-chaired by Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu. These discussions aim to coordinate efforts to ensure a smooth and violence-free election process.

The decision to employ drones is a response to concerns about political thuggery and violence in the run-up to the elections. Recent years have witnessed unsettling events during governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa, resulting in loss of lives and property.

In this political climate, incumbent Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State are both seeking re-election, while Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State is supporting the All Progressives Congress candidate, Usman Ododo.

Adejobi affirmed the police force’s commitment to ensuring the success of the elections, stating, “For our preparation towards the off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo states, we have done our operational order for each of these states, and we are very ready for deployment. We have shared our election duty documents – the Standard Operating Procedures – with our personnel. Since it’s an off-season election, we will have adequate personnel deployed.”

He further explained, “The Inspector-General of Police has directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of operations to circulate the operation order and Standard Operations Procedure – just like a bucket note that everyone deployed for the assignment would be armed with.

We will also deploy our equipment to ensure that each of the three states is fortified for free, fair, and credible elections. We have enough equipment, arms and ammunition, teargas canisters, water cannons, armoured personnel carriers, drones, and our plain clothes officers would also be on the fields to gather intelligence for us.”

    • ‘How top police officers shared victim’s money’
    • Allegation false, say police

The Rivers State Police Command is confronted with an allegation that some of its top commanders extorted more than N84 million from a surveillance contractor, Mr. Atubi John Davison.

A human rights activist, Israel Joe, in a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, detailed how the money as well as a gold necklace was confiscated by the police and shared among some top officers of the command.

Joe in the petition, a copy of which was sent to the Police Service Commission, the National Assembly and the Presidency, said on September 14, the police broke into the residence of the victim located at Egbelu Peace Avenue Road 6, House 14, Port Harcourt and arrested the victim and four others, including a female.

“They went ahead to search the whole house and discovered about N100 million mostly in dollars meant for the payment of surveillance men watching after oil facilities.

“The police took the money. They also took away two of the victim’s cars, Chevrolet and Toyota Camry, along with neck chain valued at N4 million and other properties.

“They kept the victim incommunicado and released the others on bail worth millions of naira. Still in police custody, an investigation was carried out which shows the fact that the money was meant for the payment of surveillance workers.”

The petitioner alleged that the police still went ahead to extort N80 million, the gold chain, two plasma television sets, shoes and clothing they took from the victim’s house.

He said: “They issued a threat to us that no one should hear about the issue else they would come for all of us.

“They also told us that such monies come from the government so the victim should be able to cover up with subsequent monies.

“We thereby call on the Inspector General of Police and all well-meaning authorities to bring these policemen to book, get back the monies and properties of the victim as well as compensate the victim and repair the house damaged by the police.”

The petition was entitled “A call for disciplinary action on extortion, refund of over N80million and gold neck chain valued for over N4million, detention, kidnapping, and ransom taken by the IPO, AC CID…”

A blogger, Pararan Mock News, in a viral post, detailed how senior police officers attached to the command divided and shared the victim’s money.

The highest got N30m while others got N20m, N15m, N10m while the least, identified as Princess, pocketed N9m.

But the command in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP. Grace Iringe-Koko, described the allegation as false.

The statement said: ‘The Rivers State Police Command, in response to a widely circulated social media video by one Israel Joe, aims to clarify the situation concerning the arrest of Mr. Davidson John on September 14, 2023, by the Cybercrime Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Rivers State Police Command.

“The initial grounds for Mr. John’s arrest was rooted in allegations of involvement in cybercrime and ritualistic activities. Subsequent to a comprehensive search of his residence at No. 6 Peace Avenue, Ogbelu, Rivers State, Police Operatives discovered substantial sums of money in both domestic and foreign currencies concealed in his premises, notably atop the ceiling.

“Mr. John’s inability to provide a satisfactory account for the origin of this money led to his transfer to the SCID for further investigation. However, it came to light that the suspect had a urinary catheter in his stomach, necessitating a medical assessment.

“Upon consultation with a medical professional, it was determined that his health condition could not endure excessive stress, prompting a decision to release him into the custody of a reliable surety while investigations continued.”

The police said Davinson’s father acted as his surety and requested financial assistance for his son’s medical needs.

The police said: “The Deputy Commissioner of Police granted a partial release of funds on compassionate grounds for the suspect’s healthcare while the remaining amount was meticulously documented and entrusted to the exhibit keeper.

“Additionally, a gold necklace, reportedly obtained from an undisclosed woman, was also registered with the exhibit keeper.

“The Rivers State Police Command emphatically reaffirms that the entirety of the money is securely registered and under the custody of the exhibit keeper, thus refuting any insinuations to the contrary made by the suspect, as it is vital to get proper understanding of the reason behind concealing such huge amount of money in cash in his house, as well as not being able to give full account of the monies.  “The Command urges the public to dismiss the misinformation presented by Israel Joe, recognising it as a distortion of facts. It is important to emphasise that the investigation is ongoing, and the Command intends to provide a comprehensive update to the public regarding its outcome in due course.”
