Police nab ‘most wanted’ four suspected kidnappers in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four suspected members of a gang involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, and ritual practices at Ogbese in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Olayinka Ayanlade, the spokesman for the police command, disclosed the arrest of the suspects in a statement issued to journalists in Akure on Monday.

Ayanlade said that the suspects, led by one Ifeoluwa Julius, had long been on the command’s watch list for alleged involvement in violent crimes in the area.

He revealed that operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit tracked the suspects to the outskirts of Ogbese following intelligence that they had returned from a location where they allegedly procured charms to fortify themselves for future attacks.

According to him, the coordinated operation led to the arrest of Julius and three members of his gang.

Ayanlade said the items recovered from the ringleader included an expended cartridge, fetish materials, and blood-stained red and white cloth.

He added that during interrogation, Julius allegedly confessed to being a ritualist and admitted, along with his gang members, to involvement in several kidnapping incidents in the Ogbese area.

He also confirmed that he and his gang had travelled to obtain more charms to bolster their criminal activities.

Ayanlade, however, added that the suspects would be charged in court following the completion of investigations.

  • FCT Police deny assassination attempt on Lt. Yerima

FCT Police deny assassination attempt on Lt. Yerima

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed viral social media reports alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima.

Police described the claim as false and capable of causing unnecessary public panic.

In a statement  on Sunday night, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Command has no record or report of any such incident within the FCT.

Yerima last week had a confrontation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over a disputed land site in Gaduwa District.

The clash, captured on video, sparked widespread public debate.

The viral social media report said Yerima was trailed by unidentified men dressed in black and riding in two unmarked Hilux vans with no number plates, adding that the vehicles allegedly followed him from the NIPCO Filling Station off Kubwa Expressway to Gado Nasco Way.

Adeh urged residents to disregard the publication, which she described as misleading and unverified, noting that the spread of false information poses a threat to public peace and safety.

“For the safety of all residents, the Command advises the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest Police Division,” Adeh stated.

She also provided the Command’s emergency contact lines 08032003913 and 08068587311 for swift response to distress situations.

The Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order across the nation’s capital.

  • Police and credibility problem

    Police and credibility problem

Interestingly, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) likes to indulge in fantasies about its performance, particularly concerning the fight against insecurity. While trying to demonstrate their relevance, the police often end up exposing a lack of credibility.

A recent kidnapping in Edo State further exposed police untruthfulness.   The Deputy Public Relations Officer, Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, in a statement, said the police had rescued seven kidnappees in the Ewohimi area of Esan South-East Local Government Area of the state. He stated that the command, on November 1, had received a distress report from one Enoch Omozokpia, whose father, William Omozokpia, was abducted on his farm by armed men.

Ikoedem said: “Acting swiftly on the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Ewohimi, led a team of operatives in a joint rescue mission with the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups. The team stormed the forest in a well-coordinated operation, engaging in an intense bush-combing effort that forced the abductors to abandon their captives and flee.

“All seven victims were rescued unhurt and have since been reunited with their families.”

According to him, the rescued victims are William Akhabue, Innocent Ebarekor, Rachel Ebarekor, Efuah Ebarekor, Winner Ebarekor, William Omozokpia, and Lucky Igiese (popularly known as Bulala).

He continued: “The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Monday Agbonika, commended the gallantry and professionalism displayed by the police operatives, soldiers, and vigilantes who participated in the rescue operation. He reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment to the safety of all residents and assured that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.”

However, the police narrative, which was shared on the command’s Facebook page, was punctured by users who reacted in the comment section.

Ken Mulla, who claimed that one of the victims was his uncle, wrote: “How and when? When did the Edo State Police rescue them? Is this how the Edo State Police want to tackle the insecurity in Esan land? My uncle is Omozokpia William.

“The family and the entire community paid the sum of N6.5m for their release. The police did not even know when they (the victims) came back from the hands of the kidnappers. Why are the Edo State Police lying to the citizens of Edo State? Who put us in this mess?”

Akhabue Williams Mathew, who claimed that his father was one of the victims, also wrote: “My father was one of the victims who was kidnapped. We personally paid N6.5m for their release, and you are here taking the credit. Is this how you intend to tackle insecurity in Edo State?”

Glory William wrote: “My daddy is among those who were kidnapped, and N6.5m was paid before they were released. Police, why all these lies?”

Cosmos Osunde wrote: “This write-up is completely false, a lie from the pit of hell. The good people of Ewohimi paid a huge ransom to secure the release of these individuals from the hands of the kidnappers. Why all these lies? The Edo State Police should do better.”

Mc Deputy Yuan wrote: “This is my community precisely. The Edo State Police didn’t rescue anything. The family paid N6.5 million to the kidnappers before they released them. Which one is Edo State Police rescuing seven people? Mr PPRO, this is not what happened, please.”

It is thought-provoking that the police have not responded to these claims against the official account. Is it true that the victims were freed after payment of N6.5m ransom to the kidnappers? Why did the police claim that the victims were rescued by security agents?

Rescue or ransom payment? This question comes up regularly regarding the resolution of kidnap cases in the country. Official narratives claiming kidnap victims were “rescued” by security personnel are often not credible.

Strikingly, another kidnapping in July highlighted the police credibility problem.  Six Nigerian Law School (NLS) students travelling in a public vehicle from Onitsha, Anambra State, to resume studies at NLS Yola campus in Adamawa State, were kidnapped on July 26. Five of them regained freedom on July 31 after paying a ransom of N10 million each, according to one of the victims, David Obiora.

“We were kidnapped about 9pm on July 26. The incident happened between Zakibiam and Mukari, near a town called Jootar. We were taken 20 kilometres into the bush by about 10 armed men, four wielding AK-47 rifles, the others with machetes and daggers.

“We were held for six days before we were released after each of us paid N10 million in ransom,” he narrated.

Obiora stated: “Let the record be clear, the Nigeria Police did not rescue us. The Law School did not rescue us. The Council of Legal Education did not rescue us. We were released after our families and friends raised and paid the ransom.”

It was significant that his account had contradicted the statement issued by Benue Police Command spokesperson Udeme Edet, who said the police had “successfully rescued” six law students and they had been “safely released and united with their families” on the morning of August 1. The statement added: “Police authorities confirmed the rescue, assuring the public of their commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property.”

The regular disconnection between police accounts and narratives of kidnap victims and their families is disturbingly obvious. Whenever the police announce the rescue of kidnap victims, giving the impression that no ransom was paid, and such victims contradict the official account, it further dents the image of the police.

A rescue suggests physical action on the part of the rescuers.  If the abductors released the captives, possibly after the payment of ransom, that can’t be strictly described as a rescue.

Also, when the announcement of a rescue is accompanied by silence about the kidnappers, it suggests that the kidnappers are free and may well strike again. That’s dangerous.

It is concerning that kidnappings not only continue in the country but are also on the rise.  More than 3, 600 people were kidnapped in Nigeria last year, according to Armed Conflict Location and Event Data figures; this was described as “the most ever” recorded.

The police must raise their game, and stop presenting a false reality about their performance against kidnappers to hoodwink the public.

Police rescue kidnap victim tied inside hotel toilet in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on violent crime, rescuing a kidnapped victim found tied up inside a hotel toilet.

The police also foiled an armed robbery attack in two separate operations that unfolded over a 48-hour period.

According to a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, the kidnap incident occurred on 13th November 2025 in the Ezzangbo axis of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, where a three-man gang abducted one Obasi ThankGod.

The kidnappers, said to have been terrorising the area for some time, blindfolded and tied up their victim before hiding him inside a hotel toilet while they negotiated a ransom of ₦5 million with his family.

The police said the abductors abandoned him in the concealed location believing it would delay detection and give them enough time to secure the ransom.

However, the Command’s intelligence unit, acting on credible leads, tracked the suspects’ movements and traced the hideout.

Mr Ukandu said Police operatives stormed the facility, rescued the victim alive, and arrested three suspects identified as Uchenna Ogbozuru, Ebuka Ejiogu, and Chizoba Idenyi Ogwa.

The statement noted that the suspects are in police custody and will be prosecuted at the end of investigations.

Mr Ukandu said the rescue operation came barely a day after another successful operation by the Command.

He said, “On 2th November 2025, police patrol teams along the Ehamufu–Nkalagu Road heard sporadic gunshots and distress screams.

“Responding swiftly, the officers moved toward the noise and discovered Ali Solomon struggling with three armed robbers who were attempting to dispossess him of his motorcycle.

“Upon seeing the police, the armed men opened fire. The operatives returned fire, neutralising one of the suspects while the others escaped into the surrounding bushes”.

Mr Ukandu said a loaded AK-47 rifle containing ten rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene while fhe victim, Solomon, was safely evacuated and the area secured.

Reacting to the two incidents, the Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya, praised the officers for their professionalism, courage and timely intervention.

She reaffirmed the Command’s determination to make Ebonyi State unsafe for criminal elements, stressing that police operations and intelligence surveillance would be further intensified across vulnerable locations.

CP Uche-Anya also commended residents of the state for what she described as “consistent and credible flow of information,” which, she said, has continued to strengthen the police in its crime-fighting duties.

She urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, assuring that all reports would be handled with utmost confidentiality.

Police arrest 54-year-old father for alleged defilement of three daughters

In a bizarre revelation that has left Ugborikoko Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Uwvie Local Government Area of Delta State in disbelief, a father, Edward Odega, has been arrested for alleged sexual abuse of his three daughters over a period of seven years.

The suspect, an indigene of Issele-Mkpitime, Aniocha North LGA of the state, allegedly started defiling his first daughter who is now 24, at age 12 when she was in Primary 6.

The victims, aged 13, 15, and 24, reportedly suffered in silence until one of them found the courage to speak out.

Speaking on the incident, the unnamed 24-year-old lady said: “When I was in Primary Six, then 12 years, I was shy and afraid.

“I was thinking it was an abomination to say that kind of thing outside to people hence I kept quiet, suffering in silence.”

The abuse was said to have come to light during a school enlightenment outreach conducted by CSP Temi Agbede Zuokumor, Divisional Police Officer of Ugborikoko Division, aimed at sensitising students on child safety and reporting abuse.

One of the children, moved by the session, disclosed the years of torment she and her sisters had endured at the hands of their father.

Following the revelation, the police swiftly intervened, leading to the arrest of the father (Odega).

Authorities are now providing the children with medical and psychological support while investigations continue.

CSP Zuokumor described the child’s bravery as “exceptional,” noting that the outreach programme played a critical role in giving her the courage to come forward and exposed her father’s atrocities.

She emphasised that such community and school initiatives are essential in breaking the silence around child abuse and ensuring that victims know they are not alone.

The suspect confessed to the defilement of his three daughters during an interview with the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Edafe Bright.

When the Command’s spokesman asked him whether he was telling the truth based on revelations by his daughters, Odega said: “Yes, you are telling the truth sir”.

When asked how long he had been sleeping with his daughters, he said: “For seven years now. I don’t really know; that is just an evil act.”

Edafe said the suspect would remain in police custody as the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, the police have urged parents, guardians, and community members to remain vigilant and report any signs of abuse, adding that no form of sexual exploitation would be tolerated.

The authorities said this heartbreaking case serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued awareness, vigilance, and proactive measures to protect vulnerable children.

Panic over ‘loud explosion’ near Owo bank

Residents and passersby were thrown into panic on Saturday after a loud explosion occurred near a commercial bank in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The sound reportedly sent people scampering for safety as thick smoke briefly rose from the scene, forcing traders to flee and nearby shop owners to hastily shut their doors.

The scare comes barely two weeks after the Department of State Services (DSS) alerted the Nigerian Army to an alleged plot by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) to launch coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, said investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by a loud firecracker purchased from a nearby supermarket.

Ayanlade said a suspect, identified as Ayoola Daniel Ojumu, has been arrested and allegedly confessed to his involvement, while his accomplice who allegedly ignited the device is still at large.

“The disturbance was caused by a banger purchased from a nearby supermarket. One Ayoola Daniel Ojumu of Owo has been arrested in connection with the incident and has confessed to his role” he said.

He added that the suspect would be charged to court after investigation is concluded.

Ayanlade urged parents and guardians to caution their wards, especially before and during the festive season, warning that the command would not hesitate to take decisive action against any attempts to breach public peace.

He also called on residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of a confidential DSS letter warning of “imminent attacks” by ISWAP terrorists in Ondo and Kogi States.

The letter, addressed to the Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, listed Eriti-Akoko, Oyin-Akoko and Owo town among targeted communities. It stated that intelligence confirmed plans to carry out coordinated attacks “anytime soon.”

Last week, panic also spread in the Akungba-Akoko community following rumours that Boko Haram members had invaded the area.

However, the Students’ Union Government of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), dismissed the claims as false and capable of causing unnecessary fear among students and residents.

Speaking on the development, CP Danjuma said, “The Command is committed to ensuring the safety and security of residents. We will not relent in our efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.”

The Police have secured the conviction of one Mr. David Udensik, also known as Dr. Jacob Bello, for his role in a transnational oil-related fraud scheme amounting to over $1 million.

The conviction followed a petition by a United States–based energy company, alleging that the suspect obtained funds from the firm under the pretext of facilitating legitimate crude oil transactions in Nigeria.

Acting on the petition, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force – National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) commenced investigations which revealed that the suspect, between 2018 and 2023, operated a coordinated criminal network that forged documents purportedly emanating from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other regulatory platforms to deceive the company.

Forensic analyses confirmed that the documents, seals, and authentication materials presented by the suspect were entirely counterfeit. Funds traced through the scheme were found to have been diverted into accounts linked to the suspect and his accomplices.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin: “following diligent investigative and prosecutorial efforts, the Federal High Court, Abuja, on October 22nd convicted Udensik on charges bordering on Forgery, Obtaining by False Pretense, and Money Laundering. The Court further ordered the forfeiture of assets valued at several hundreds of millions of Naira, including real estate and other properties derived from the proceeds of the crime, to facilitate restitution to the victim company.

“Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, has commended the officers involved in the investigation and prosecution for their professionalism. He affirms the commitment of the Force to protecting Nigeria’s corporate integrity and ensuring that cyber-enabled financial criminals, irrespective of status or location, are brought to justice”.
