  • Octogenarian accuses police of illegal detention, harassment

An octogenarian, Pastor Manase Elebijo, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to rescue him from intimidation, harassment and illegal detention by policemen.

Elebijo, who allegedly collapsed at the Area M command, Idimu, last month after he was detained by operatives of the Force Headquarters Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (FCIID), Abuja, claimed that he has been subjected to various unlawful treatments, despite having a valid court order in a civil matter in his favour.

Aside the arrest by operatives of FCIID, the octogenarian said he was earlier whisked away by policemen from the Investigation Department at the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Zone II, Onikan, Lagos.

According to him, his travails started when his business partner, Dr. Oladipo Omojolowo, allegedly moved to shut him out of the proceeds of their joint wooden bridge tollgate at Igando in Alimosho.

The pastor said he and one Ismaila Asimi were detained and intimidated to forfeit their stake in the bridge, which they refused.

In a petition signed by his lawyer, Femi Danilola, the octogenarian said his health has degenerated as a result of the alleged illegal detentions in February and March at the behest of Omojolowo.

Narrating his ordeal, Elebijo said: “Despite my age, I was manhandled and I collapsed in the cell before they rushed me to Rothem Hospital, Idimu and I was later moved to Igando General Hospital.

“This whole issue started in November last year after Justice Y.A. Adesanya of a Lagos High Court delivered judgment in my favour in a suit I filed against Dr. Omojolowo. I went to court because for five years,  Dr. Omojolowo has been collecting toll from the bridge without remitting my share.

“All efforts to regain my position as financial director of the business and to continue collecting proceeds were rebuffed by Dr. Omojolowo with the help of thugs and policemen.

“So, on February 18, I went to meet Dr. Omojolowo with a proposed new agreement to enable a peaceful running of our joint wooden bridge business as directed by the court. I also went to discuss the mode of collection of tolls but I was attacked by Dr. Omojolowo and his thugs.

“They threatened to kill me if I came near the bridge again. The matter was reported to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Panti, which led to the arrest of four persons, while Dr. Omojolowo and his son Kunle escaped.”

“He told the DPO he was at the station to know why some policemen were operating in that area. The DPO explained the action of the anti-cult unit and the lecturer apologized. He even wrote an apology letter.

“As a learned person, it is expected that he did things with decorum. My doors are opened. There was never a time he came to complain to me about the conduct of my men.

“The IG is committed to democratic policing. He will not condone criminals in uniform. Wrongful detention and corruption of any form will not be tolerated. It is a lie,” Gwandu said.
