    Kano police arrest 107 suspects, recover arms, stolen items

    The police in Kano State have arrested 107 suspected criminals for offences including armed robbery, kidnapping, human trafficking, theft, and thuggery.

    Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, while briefing reporters on Monday, said the arrests were made across the 44 local government areas of the state within one month.

    Among those apprehended were eight armed robbers, eight kidnappers, three human traffickers, 14 drug dealers, two motor vehicle thieves, six motorcycle thieves, several burglars, and 61 thugs.

    Recovered items included an AK-47 rifle, two fabricated guns, 11 live ammunition, seven vehicles, eight motorcycles, seven cows, 102 cutlasses, 74 knives, 111 parcels and 458 wraps of dried Cannabis Sativa.

    Other exhibits seized were 211 pieces of rubber solutions, 257 bottles of suck-and-die substances, five packets and 21 pieces of Exol tablets, 20 sachets and 13 pieces of diazepam tablets, 44 Kampala textiles, 59 mobile phones, three POS machines, 17 Opay debit cards, and three MP3 players.

    Bakori added that one victim of human trafficking was rescued during the operation, codenamed “Operation Kukan Kura,” which also saw several public spaces reclaimed from criminal elements.

    “In line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on community policing, the Kano State Police Command intensified its efforts through the implementation of Operation Kukan Kura, which incorporates both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.

    “This initiative is designed to foster active public participation in policing and a collaborative approach to addressing criminal activities.

    “Operation Kukan Kura” engages communities as active stakeholders in policing efforts, leveraging their unique positions as the eyes and ears of the Police within neighborhoods.

    “The steady decline in these crimes underscores the effectiveness of this strategy and the vital role played by community members in supporting its implementation.

    “Within the month of August 2025, the Command achieved notable operational successes, including the arrest of 107 suspects involved in various major crimes such as armed robbery, illicit drug trafficking, motor vehicle and motorcycle theft, thuggery, and other social vices.

    “From the launch of ‘Operation Kukan Kura’ on 1st July, 2025, to date, a total of 473 dangerous weapons and a large quantity of illicit drugs have been recovered,” the Kano police chief said.

    Police arrest hotel worker over alleged N11m gold chain theft in Ondo

    The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a hotel staff member, Temitope Ajayi, for allegedly stealing a gold chain valued at N11 million from a guest in Akure.

    Ajayi, who works at a popular hotel in the Alagbaka area of the state, was said to have committed the offence on June 22, 2025.

    He was among 100 suspects apprehended in August for various crimes, including murder, kidnapping, robbery, cultism, drug offences, and theft.

    Confirming the arrest on Sunday, Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, said the suspect is in custody and assisting the command with information to recover the stolen property

    In a separate case, the Commissioner revealed that another suspect, Gbenga Segun Ojo, allegedly stole a gold necklace worth N5,155,000 and sold it to Garuba Jubril for N3,084,000. Both men have since been arrested.

    Meanwhile, an 87-year-old community leader, Chief Kogbona, was also arrested for allegedly supplying arms and ammunition to a robbery gang. His arrest followed the capture of three suspects — Adeife Adewumi, Matthew Johnson, and Diisu Sunday — accused of murdering a 25-year-old motorcyclist, Nwike Sabbat, in Ondo town before making away with his motorcycle.

    “Recovered exhibits included two cut-to-size barrel guns, one live cartridge, one expended cartridge, and 10 live cartridges allegedly traced to Chief Kogbona,” he noted.

    The police also arrested a suspected fraudster who allegedly duped a victim of N10 million under the pretence of selling scrap materials in Akure.

    CP Lawal also explained that the suspect confessed to the crime and implicated an accomplice based in Lagos.

    “The command has since frozen the illicit funds and is pursuing the accomplice,” he said.

    In another breakthrough, the police boss said his officers in Ikare-Akoko apprehended two suspected kidnappers identified as Mohammadu Usman (25) and Mohammed Idrisa (27) – while three others were neutralised during an operation.

    The suspects confessed and were identified by their victim.

    CP Lawal reiterated the command’s commitment to making the state unsafe for criminals.

    “These arrests serve as a stern warning to fraudsters, robbers, and kidnappers that the Ondo State Police Command will not tolerate crime in any form. We remain resolute in safeguarding lives and property in the state,” he said.

    Police smash car theft syndicate, recover stolen bus

    The Lagos State Police Command has dismantled a car theft syndicate, arresting four suspects and recovering a stolen Toyota Hiace bus in a joint operation spanning three states.

    The breakthrough followed a report lodged on August 1, 2025, involving the theft of a grey Toyota Hiace bus.

    Acting swiftly, operatives of the Tactical Team, Isheri Division, tracked down the prime suspect, Salisu Ibrahim Abdullahi, 31, who was arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

    Further investigations led detectives to Kano State, where three of Abdullahi’s alleged accomplices were apprehended. They include Yenusa Salihu, 45, a mechanic; Baba Jero Idris, 49, a car dealer; and Abdullahi Aliyu, 41, a businessman. The stolen vehicle was also recovered during the Kano raid.

    According to Police spokesman, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, says that the suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.

    The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, commended the operatives for their swift, intelligence-led operation.

    He assured Lagos residents and visitors of the Command’s continued commitment to deploying modern policing strategies to curb vehicle theft and bring criminals to justice.

    Police foil assassination plot in Niger

    An alleged plot to kill a man in Beji, Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State, has been uncovered by the police, following the arrest of two suspects who confessed they were hired to carry out the assassination.

    The suspects, 40-year-old Muhammad Mohammed and 35-year-old Mohammed Usman, both of Beji community in Bosso local government area of Niger State were intercepted at about 12:45 a.m. on August 23, 2025, by a police patrol team working with local vigilantes at the Beji railway crossing.

    A search on them led to the recovery of a locally made pistol, a live cartridge, and the sum of N13,000.

    During interrogation, the men admitted they were contracted by one Dogo, also of Beji, to assassinate a man who had married his former wife revealing that Dogo promised to pay them N100,000 for the operation.

    According to the suspects, the N13,000 found on them was part of a transport fee given in advance by Dogo as they claimed they were on their way to collect the full balance before carrying out the task when they were apprehended.

    Police immediately took them into custody at Maikunkele Division and later transferred them to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation and prosecution.

    The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Wasiu, who confirmed the incident said that security operatives have intensified efforts to arrest Dogo, who is said to be on the run.

    In another development, the command said its operatives arrested nine suspected thugs with dangerous weapons in Minna.

    According to the News Agency of Nigeria NAN, PPRO Abiodun said their arrest is in continuation of the fight against thuggery and other vices in the state.

    The spokesperson added that based on credible information, on Aug. 26, between the hours of 2 am and 5am, the command’s Anti-thuggery Squad stormed the areas of Soje A, Soje B and Kpakungu.

    “During the sting operation, nine suspects were arrested and found with two suspected stolen solar batteries, five knives, cutlasses, and a digger.

    “They have been detained and being investigated by State Criminal Investigation Department of the command,” he said

    Personnel of the Quick Intervention Unit (QIU), Abia State Police Command, have apprehended members of an armed robbery and cult group terrorising residents of the state.

    The suspects identified as Udaka Justin, male, 36 years, of Akata Village, Orlu East LGA, Imo State; Chukwuebuka Michael Nnebedun, male, 24 years, of Arondizuagu, Ideato North LGA, Imo State; and Prince David, male, 24 years, of Arodizuogu, Ideato North LGA, Imo State.

    Some of the exhibits recovered from them include one (1) short locally made pistol, three (3) live cartridges, one (1) double-edged machete, one (1) battle axe, one (1) black face mask, one (1) sachet of substances suspected to be Indian hemp and one auto-rickshaw (popularly known as keke Napep).

    The Command’s spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka, who on Saturday (yesterday) confirmed the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the weapons, disclosed that operatives of the Quick Intervention Unit (QIU), Abia State Police Command, arrested the suspects while conducting stop-and-search operations at Umuagu by School Signboard in Umuahia, the state capital.

    According to Chinaka, the QIU operatives flagged down an autorickshaw (Keke Napep) with registration number MBL 801 VJ, blue in colour, carrying five occupants, including the rider.

    “The rider pretended that the tricycle had developed a fault when stopped, giving room for two of the occupants to jump out and escape.

    “However, three suspects were apprehended, who identified themselves as Udaka Justin, male, 36 years, of Akata Village, Orlu East LGA, Imo State; Chukwuebuka Michael Nnebedun, male, 24 years, of Arondizuagu, Ideato North LGA, Imo State; and Prince David, male, 24 years, of Arodizuogu, Ideato North LGA, Imo State.

    “Upon searching the suspects, operatives recovered the following exhibits: one locally made short pistol, three live cartridges, one double-edged machete, one battle axe, one black face mask, and one sachet of substances suspected to be Indian Hemp and the auto-rickshaw ( keke napep) 

    “The suspects and recovered exhibits have been taken into custody, while investigation is ongoing.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, reiterates the Command’s commitment to reducing crime in Abia State to the barest minimum.

    “He further urges the good people of Abia to continue collaborating with the Police by promptly reporting suspicious persons or activities to the nearest Police Station.”

    Police nab suspected cultists during students’ union week celebration in Osun institution

    The Osun State Police Command has arrested suspected cultists during a celebration of Student Union week in an institution of the state.

     The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi in a statement on Saturday confirmed that two suspects named Taiwo Oluwatobi (29yrs) and Oluwabusuyi Ajayi (29yrs) were arrested following an intelligence.

     He said: “On 21/8/2025 at about 6:30PM, during the student union week in one of the higher institutions in the State, upon intelligence led and pro-active policing, the Anti-cultism unit of the Command arrested Oluwatobi and Ajayi. They confessed to be member of Aiye confraternity and Buccaneer confraternity (Alora) respectively.”

    Similarly, he said the Anti-Cultism Unit also arrested four hoodlums suspected to be members of Aiye confraternity terrorising the residents of Okuku town and environs.

    “In another development, upon information received that, some armed hoodlums suspected to be members of Eiye confraternity led by one Gafari, Police detectives from Anti-cultism unit of the Command swung into action and moved to the scene, on sighting the security operatives, the suspects fled the scene.

    “Our men recovered one cut to size single barrel gun, one cut to size double barrel gun, five sharp cutlasses, one axe and three lives cartridges from their hideouts in Osogbo while efforts are on top gear to arrest the fleeing hoodlums.”

    He noted that the Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Gotan, encouraged students to focus on their education, as the law will not spare anyone involved in cultism.

    Anambra Police Command has arrested two suspects over a staged kidnap incident.

    Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga who stated this on Saturday, said the suspects were arrested following intelligence-led operations by Police Operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.

    According to him, “The suspects identified as Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye, female, aged 23 years, and Chibuike Ogbu, male, aged 24 years, were arrested after intelligence-led operations uncovered that the supposed victim conspired with Chibuike (her boyfriend) to stage her own abduction.

    “The operatives also recovered the sum of ₦1,2m being part of the ransom earlier paid by the girl’s family members.

    “Further information reveals that the suspects demanded ₦15m ransom, and after negotiation, ₦3m was transferred into the victim’s account.”

    Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu described the incident as a reflection of the rising moral decay in the society, where young people are increasingly resorting to criminality for selfish gains.

    He urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to intensify efforts in inculcating discipline, integrity, and sound values in their children and wards.

    The CP also warned youths against engaging in self-destructive ventures, stressing that the long arm of the law will always catch up with criminals, no matter how cleverly disguised their schemes may be.

    Normalcy returns after police, youths clash in Lagos

    Normalcy has returned after a clash between some youths and police officers at Elemoro in the Lekki area of the state, the spokesperson of Lagos Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, has said.

     Hundeyin, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) in a statement on Friday in Lagos, said that the incident occurred in Onosa community in the Elemoro area.

    “Today Aug. 29, six officers from Elemoro Division while on routine patrol encountered an irate (sic) mob.

    “In the course of ensuring their own safety, the officers used their firearms, resulting in three individuals sustaining injuries.

    “The injured persons were taken to hospital for medical attention, ” he said.

    Hundeyin said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, promptly responded to the incident by personally leading a detachment of officers to the scene.

    “The swift intervention led to the removal of all barricades, restoring the free-flow of traffic in the area.

    “CP Jimoh also visited the Onosa community and engaged with youth and community leaders in the area to de-escalate tension and embrace peace.

    “He extended an invitation to the youth leaders for continued dialogue to address concerns and prevent future occurrences, ” Hundeyin said.

    Hundeyin said that the policemen involved in the shooting had been taken into custody as investigations into the incident had begun.

    “The command is committed to a thorough and transparent inquiry to establish the facts surrounding the event.

    “Normalcy has been restored to the area and significant police presence remain in place to ensure the sustenance of the restored peace and order, ” he said.

    Hundeyin urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and refrain from actions that could disrupt public peace.

    • Four killed, abduction victim rescued

    Four suspected members of a secessionist group have been killed in a 15-hour gun duel with the Police in Awa, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement on Friday, said a victim who had earlier been kidnapped and held hostage in the secessionist camp was rescued during the operation.

    The Police, in collaboration with a local vigilance group, had stormed the hoodlums’ camp, where various dangerous items were recovered, said Ikenga.

    He listed the recovered exhibits to include: two pump-action guns, one fabricated AK-47 rifle, one K2 assault rifle, one locally made hunter gun, one radio transmission box, and three locally made Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

    “Others are two empty gas cylinders, two wraps of cable wires, three bags of 50 kg rice, one driver’s license, one National Identity Card, one black Lexus RX 350 Jeep with Reg. No. ACA 340 MA, 3 (Three) Toyota Camry cars with Reg. Nos: ABC 268 FQ, EKY 151 CD and FGG 706 ME.

    “Also recovered are: One black Toyota Camry car, five mobile phones (Infinix X6716B, Tecno Spark KL4 and three analogue phones, sleeping materials, one desert boot, one big cooler, and a roll of tarpaulin.”

    Ikenga added, “In a sustained effort to rid Anambra State of criminal elements, Police Operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu in collaboration with the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG) Agunechemba, acting on credible intelligence, stormed a Secessionist/Terrorist camp at Awa, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State in the early hours of 21st August 2025.

    “During the well-coordinated operation that lasted for more than 15 hours, the operatives successfully dislodged the insurgents, rescued a victim who had earlier been kidnapped and held hostage in the camp.

    “It was reported that despite the payment of a ransom of ₦20m only by the victim’s family, the hoodlums aborted his release until he was eventually freed by the Joint Security Team.

    “In the fierce gun battle that ensued, four of the criminal elements were neutralised.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, assured Ndi Anambra that the Command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring safety and security.

    “He also assured that extensive operations are ongoing in the area to track down and arrest other fleeing suspects as well as destroy other criminal camps in the State.”

    Tension erupted in Onosa community, Elemoro area of Lagos State, on Friday after a routine police patrol clashed with a mob, resulting in three people sustaining injuries.

    According to the Lagos State Police Command, six officers from Elemoro Division were on patrol in the early hours when they encountered an irate crowd. In an attempt to ensure their safety, the officers fired shots, wounding three individuals who were later rushed to the hospital.

    The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, promptly led a detachment to the scene to restore order and clear barricades mounted on the road, reopening traffic flow. 

    He also met with youth and community leaders, urging calm and encouraging dialogue to prevent future clashes.

    Meanwhile, the officers involved in the shooting have been taken into custody as investigations begin. 

    The Command assured that the probe would be “thorough and transparent.”

    He urged residents to stay calm, cooperate with law enforcement, and avoid actions that could endanger public safety.
