    Police investigate crash linked to louts in FCT

    Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command has begun investigation into the accident around the Mabushi bridge, allegedly caused by louts, popularly known as ‘agberos’, which claimed a couple and sparked violence that left suspected some assailants dead.

    FCT Police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Josephine Adeh, said three unidentified men entered a grey Toyota Highlander, registration number ABJ 206 EC, near Berger Junction, Utako, and struggled with the driver for control of the steering.

    In a statement, the Command confirmed that the accident occurred on September 3, about 1:30 p.m. on the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway by Mabushi underbridge.

    She said the vehicle lost control during the struggle, hit a parked Mazda, and somersaulted into a bridge pillar on the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway by Mabushi under bridge.

    Adeh said: “Preliminary findings indicate that a grey Toyota Highlander, registration number ABJ 206 EC, driven by one Emeka Ehekweme with his wife, was accosted by three unidentified suspects who entered the vehicle near Berger Junction, Utako. In the ensuing struggle for control of the steering, the vehicle lost control, struck another parked Mazda vehicle and somersaulted into a bridge pillar”.

    She explained that the incident led to multiple fatalities. According to her, “The Highlander’s driver, his wife, and two of the assailants were confirmed dead on arrival at the National Hospital, while a third suspect is currently receiving treatment. The Mazda driver, one Suleman Mohammed, sustained no life-threatening injuries.”

    Adeh stressed that detectives had started investigation into matter

    “Investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway. The Command commiserates with the families of the deceased and assures the public of a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts of the matter. Further development will be communicated in due course,” the statement added.

    The Nation had on Wednesday reported that three suspected touts, locally known as agberos and linked to the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, were set ablaze by an angry mob after being accused of causing the crash.

    Videos from the scene showed the suspects lying on the ground before they were doused with petrol and set on fire.

    An eyewitness had lamented that touting had become a menace, urging FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to ban it.

    The traditional ruler/District Head, Bagaji Odo in Kogi East Senatorial District, David Akpa, who was abducted on Monday has been rescued.

    Sources said the monarch was rescued yesterday morning.

    In a statement, Gift Idoga, the Press Secretary to the Chairman of Omala Local Government Area, Edibo Mark, said his boss mobilised taskforce made up of hunters group, vigilantes, Police and the Nigerian Army in the the rescue.

    According to the statement, the district head was receiving treatment.

    Also, the police have recovered N2,047,300, Bareta pistol, one local double barrel gun, six rounds of 9 mm ammunition, hard drugs, axe and four phones when they arrested a girl in Okene.

    The 23-year-old girl, Charity William, was arrested on Tuesday following “an intelligence led-raid operation”.

    The spokesman for the state Police Command, Superintendent of Police William Ovye Aya confirmed the incident.

     He said the lady was sighted at Yuwander Lodge, a suspected hideout at Oguda village, Okene. The police raided one of the rooms booked by one Christopher Kadiri, where the lady was nabbed.

    The spokesman added that on the same day, the operatives attached to Ofu Division recovered a gun at Ogbakpedo village on the Itobe-Ayingba Road.

    According to him, the recovery was based on a tip off that some persons suspected to be kidnappers were sighted in the bush.

    He explained: “On sighting the police, they ran away. Search of the area led to the recovering of one locally made barrel gun, cutlass, techno phone, among others.”

    He added that the state Police Commissioner, Miller Dantawaye, commended the officers for their dedication to duty and reaffirming his commitment to the fight against criminality in the state.

    In a statement issued on Thursday, the Command confirmed that the accident occurred on September 3, 2025, at around 1:30 p.m. along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway near the Mabushi underpass.

    She said the vehicle lost control during the struggle, hit a parked Mazda, and somersaulted into a bridge pillar under the bridge along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway by Mabushi.

    Police arrest gateman over alleged defilement of four-year-old pupil in Ibadan

    The Oyo State Police Command said it has arrested a 26-year old school gateman, Josiah Ayomide over alleged defilement of four years old pupil in her school in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital 

    Spokesman of the Command, Adewale Osifeso while addressing journalists at the Command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, said the victim, who is a four years old girl, had on 29th August, 2025 complained of pains in her vagina to her eldest sister.

    Osifeso noted that the victim later told her mother that her school gateman had unlawful raped her while she was in the school. 

    He stated that the suspect was arrested and later confessed to the crime.

    He said, “The victim was taken to Police Medical Clinic Eleyele-Ibadan for medical examination and treatment and medical report revealed that hymen not intact, tenderness around the vulva and vagina with bruises. 

    Osifeso said the suspect would be prosecuted upon completion of investigation.

    In another development, the Command also said it arrested one Azeez Kolawole and Isah Fatai at Sanyo area for engaging in stealing of goats around Ibadan and its environ, using Toyota Matrix without Registration number for the act.

    Osifeso said the duo were sometimes arrested and charged to court on two different occasions for same offence. 

    He however said the suspects has confessed to the crime and investigation is ongoing to locate other members of their syndicate.

    Other suspected criminals arrested by the Police include suspected kidnappers, suspected armed robbers, and suspect hijackers among others.

    Police in A’Ibom assure adequate security for Nig./Rwanda World Cup qualifiers

    The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, Baba Azare, has assured football fans and visitors of adequate security during the World Cup Qualifiers between Nigeria and Rwanda.

    Azare gave the assurance while addressing a news conference on Thursday in Uyo.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match was slated for Sept. 6 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo by 5 p.m.

    Azare said that the police were fully prepared to host the match and ensure that it was hitch-free security-wise.

    “On Saturday, by God’s grace, we have an international match between Nigeria and Rwanda here in Akwa Ibom.

    “I want to inform you that our men are going to use their total strength in policing the game”, he said.

    The CP guaranteed the safety of all visitors coming in and going out of the state during and after the match, assuring that it would be peaceful.

    Azare, however, warned hoodlums who might be planning to foment trouble to steer clear of the state, saying that the command was ready to prevent any form of violence.

    “All intending criminals who may have plans to foment trouble during the match should have a rethink because our tactical team will not tolerate any form of violence,” he said.

    Many injuried as police destroy insurgents’ camp in five-hour gun duel

    Police in Anambra State said they have destroyed one of the militia camps belonging to the Eastern Security Network of the Indigenous People of Biafra (ESN/IPOB) in Aguluezechukwu, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

    Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga who disclosed this on Thursday said the feat was achieved during a raid of the area jointly carried out by the Army, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and State Vigilante.

    He said several of the insurgents escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds during exchange fire which lasted over five hours.

    He listed items recovered from the camp to include white Lexus 470 SUV and several Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

    According to him: “Anambra Police – led Joint Security Force, Aguata, comprising troops from the 302 Artillery Regiment (GS), 14 Field Engineer Regiment, Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Anambra State Vigilante (Agunechemba) in the early hours of 2nd September 2025 carried out a coordinated joint operation at an ESN/IPOB militia camp located in Aguluezechukwu, Aguata Local Government Area.

    “During the operation, which lasted over five hours, the militia members were successfully dislodged, their camp destroyed, while several of them escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds. 

    “A white Lexus 470 SUV and several Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were also recovered from the scene.

    “The area has since been stabilized and remains calm as monitoring continues to ensure the safety and security of residents, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects.

    “The Anambra State Police Command reassures Ndi Anambra of its unwavering commitment to sustaining the fight against criminality and restoring peace across the State.”

    Police arrest 5,936 crime suspects, recover 360 firearms in crackdown

    The Nigeria Police have arrested 5,936 criminal suspects and recovered 360 prohibited firearms and 5,953 rounds of ammunition during nationwide crackdown.

     Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Muyiwa Adejobi, said this during a  bpress conference yesterday at the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) Base in Guzape, Abuja.

     He said the arrests were made last month by operatives of the IRT and other special units as part of efforts to combat gunrunning and proliferation of illegal arms. According to Adejobi, those arrested include 715 armed robbery suspects, 306 ‘kidnappers’, 533 homicide suspects, 149 for unlawful possession of firearms, 371 for sexual-related offences, 590 suspected cultists, and 3,272 others for various crimes.

    He cited notable cases, including the arrest of one Jane Anodua in Rivers State for her alleged role in child trafficking reported by the Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs.

    Her arrest, he said, led to the rescue of four children, two of whom had been trafficked from Plateau to Imo State.

    Another breakthrough came with the July 13 arrest of a suspected gunrunner, Tanfa Binbol, who was allegedly operating between Taraba and Plateau States. A search of his premises reportedly yielded three AK-47 rifles, five pistols, and a pump-action rifle.Similarly, on July 27, police operatives arrested one Jerauji Ibrahim in Adamawa State and recovered two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, and 19 rounds of live ammunition. Further operations also led to the recovery of additional rifles, pistols, and ammunition from criminal hideouts.

    Adejobi said the operations demonstrated the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to save lives and properties

    He said: “The Nigeria Police Force remains firmly committed to ensuring Nigerians can go about their daily activities in peace and without fear of the unknown”.

    Police neutralise criminal kingpin in Ebonyi, recover AK-47 rifles

    The Police in Ebonyi state said it has neutralised a notorious criminal kingpin, Isaiah Okoronkwo, who has long been on its wanted list for violent crimes across the state.

    Spokesperson of the Police in the state, Joshua Ukandu, a Superintendent of Police, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday. 

    He said the breakthrough was recorded on August 29, 2025, when operatives of the Command’s Crack Squad stormed a criminal hideout in Iyonu Forest, Ishielu Local Government Area.

    According to him, the operation, which was based on credible intelligence, targeted a syndicate linked to a series of armed robbery incidents and violent crimes that had recently surged in Iyonu community. 

    Ukandu said the hoodlums opened fire on noticing the Police team, prompting a fierce gun battle. 

    The statement noted that the operatives responded gallantly, subdued the criminals, and neutralised their ringleader. 

    “In the ensuing encounter, the syndicate’s kingpin, Isaiah Okoronkwo, who had long been on the Command’s wanted list, was neutralised.

    “Two AK-47 rifles were recovered during the operation”, he said.

    The statement quoted the Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya as commending the Crack Squad for their professionalism, courage, and painstaking intelligence work that culminated in the successful operation. 

    She reassured Ebonyi residents that the Command remains resolute in its mandate to safeguard lives and property.

    The Commissioner of Police stressed that the police will continue to dismantle criminal networks wherever they operate in the state.

    She urged members of the public to continue to provide timely information to aid its efforts in maintaining security and restoring peace across communities.

    Police arrest 60-year-old for sexual assault in Lagos

    The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and charged a 60-year-old man, identified as Ajayi Femi, for allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman after spiking her drink.

    Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed in a statement on Monday that the case was first reported on August 22, 2025, by the victim’s sister at Meiran Police Station before it was transferred to the Command’s Gender Unit for further investigation.

    According to the police, findings revealed that the suspect drugged the victim’s drink, rendering her unconscious, before forcefully having carnal knowledge of her without consent.

    Medical examinations corroborated the survivor’s account, and the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.

    Femi has since been arraigned in court and remanded in prison custody, pending the next adjourned date.

    The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, assured Lagos residents of the Command’s commitment to justice and the protection of women against sexual violence.

    He urged members of the public to report cases of rape and related offences to Family Support Units across police divisions for prompt action.

    He said, “The Command remains unwavering in ensuring justice for survivors of sexual offences and in maintaining a safe environment for all residents of Lagos State.
