    • •Culprit in custody, say police

The Mayo Gwoi community in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, was on Saturday thrown into tears as the late Police Constable, Aaron John, was laid to rest.

His burial followed his brutal murder by his soldier neighbour about one week ago.

During the funeral at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), 4 Mayo Gwoi, Jalingo, the entire congregation was in a sober mood, including his only surviving sister who alongside the deceased lost both parents.

None of the people who came out to pay tributes could utter a word.

This included the deceased’s boss and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Jalingo Division, who broke into tears before the congregation.

Amid wailing and sorrow, John’s body was taken to the Magami Cemetery for burial by members of the police force, family members and sympathisers.

Two weeks ago, a young recruit of the Nigerian Army, Dauda Didan, had stabbed John in cold blood in Mayo Gwoi area of Jalingo, in what was widely speculated to be the result of a long standing disagreement between them.

It was learnt that the police came to the scene and took the victim to the Federal Medical Centre Jalingo, where he was pronounced dead.

Since then the culprit was said to have escaped until he was recently arrested.

Speaking to our correspondent on the arrest, the police spokesman in the state, ASP James Lashen, confirmed the arrest.

He said: “There was collaboration between the police and the military.

“At first we thought he had left town. Fortunately for us he was around his community.

“We got the information and then liaised with his family for him to come home.

“Before he got home, our men were already there, so he was arrested.

“The military had already done their own part and transferred the case to us. “So, very soon, he will be prosecuted”.

Men of the Lagos Police Command have recovered a car loaded with cannabis sativa and other prohibited items in the Ojo area of the state.

Spokesperson of the command, Benjamin Hundeyin, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) made this known in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

According to Hundeyin, the incident occurred, when operatives attached to the  Ojo Division stopped an ash-coloured Toyota Sienna bus during a routine operation.

Hundeyin said the driver suddenly fled the scene with the vehicle’s key, abandoning the vehicle after he was asked to present a means of identification and vehicle documents.

A search conducted on the vehicle led to the discovery of two bags of substances suspected to be cannabis, an Army jungle hat, and two ATM cards.

The vehicle and recovered exhibits have since been transferred to Special Squad 2 of the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, for further investigation.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, commended the alertness of the operatives involved, while assuring residents that efforts were underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

Court restrains police from summoning comedian

Federal High Court in Lagos has restrained inspector-general of Police and other officers from arresting, detaining, or interrogating Chinedu Ani, on-air personality and comedian, over a dispute with a business partner.

Justice D.I. Dipeolu granted the interim order following an ex-parte application filed by Ani, known as Nedu Wazobia, and five others seeking protection of their rights.

The court barred inspector-general, assistant inspector-General of Police at Alagbon, and other officers from summoning or detaining the applicants over a dispute with Metropolitan School of Business and Management, Mr. Victor Ariyibi-Oke, and Mrs. Tolulope Ariyibi-Oke.

Also joined in the suit are CSP Ngozi Braide, ASP Stephen Onihane, and Inspector Echeng Julius.

Other applicants include Sarah Williams-Konha, Avalon Okpe, Ada Okpe, Barbara Okwaranobi, and Tokindrumz Pictures and Media Nigeria.

Justice Dipeolu issued an interim injunction restraining the police and their agents from taking any further steps against the applicants pending hearing of the substantive motion on notice for enforcement of their fundamental rights.

The judge declined to grant a second prayer, which sought to compel the police to maintain the status quo on all matters relating to the transaction between the parties.

Through their counsel, J.W. Dong, the applicants argued that the police were being used by their business partners to intimidate them over what was essentially a civil dispute.

They told the court the matter had previously been investigated for about nine months by the X-Squad of the AIG’s office at Alagbon in 2024.

According to them, the probe report absolved Ani and his team of any criminal liability.

Police legal department also issued a legal advice, saying the case was contractual and that any aggrieved party should approach the court.

The applicants alleged that the sixth to eighth respondents secretly submitted a second petition to the same Alagbon office, this time to the team led by CSP Ngozi Braide.

They claimed that, notwithstanding the prior investigation and legal advice, Braide and her team disregarded the recommendations, placed the applicants under caution again, and continued to intimidate them.

The applicants further alleged that the police team’s conduct amounted to abuse of power, with one of the respondents even assaulting their former lawyer before they engaged their present counsel.

Providing background to the dispute, the applicants explained that Nedu and his team had partnered with the respondents in early 2024 for an educational charity initiative aimed at raising school fees for underprivileged students.

The project featured a high-profile fundraising gala, which the respondents had agreed to sponsor at an estimated cost of over N83 million.

Despite the successful event held in March 2024, which generated both pledges and cash donations, the respondents allegedly demanded a refund of N60 million without justification.

Following the breakdown of the partnership, the respondents petitioned the police, leading to repeated summons and alleged harassment of the applicants.

They told the court that some of them were unlawfully detained in July 2025, while others had their international passports seized by the police.

The applicants insisted that the dispute was strictly contractual and should not have attracted a criminal investigation.

In their motion, they asked the court to declare the police actions unlawful, unconstitutional, and an abuse of power.

They also sought an order compelling the police to return their seized passports and to restrain further harassment over the contractual dispute.

They are demanding N2 billion in damages, jointly and severally, against the respondents for alleged infringement of their fundamental rights.

The case is expected to proceed to a hearing on the substantive motion in the coming weeks.

  • Analyst hails police for averting two terror attacks in Benue

Analyst hails police for averting two terror attacks in Benue

A public affairs analyst, Shehu Usman, has praised the police for averting another bloodshed in Yelewata, Benue State.

Usman also commended the police for foiling attempts by criminals to wreak havoc in Guma Local Government Area, urging Nigerians to internalise the culture of praising security agencies when they do well.

The analyst, who reacted to a recent report on how the police prevented two national tragedies in Benue; noted that although three farmers died in the incidents, things would have been worse if the Rapid Response Team (RRT) stationed by the Inspector- General (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun were not proactive.

Recalling the IGP’s earlier statement that for every successful attack by criminals, the police and sister security services must have foiled numerous attempts, Usman noted that recent events have shown Egbetokun was stating the facts.

He said: “At the time, I am sure many believed he made that statement merely to defend the inability of his men to avert the Yelewata tragedy. But recent events show that the IGP was not being economical with the truth. Without the tireless efforts of the police and other security agencies in curtailing these marauding murderers, the situation could have been far worse than it is today.

“Our police officers are working tirelessly, often silently, to curtail crime, yet we do not amplify their heroics nearly as much as we amplify their shortcomings. Imagine if the bandits had succeeded in attacking Yelewata again, the news would have dominated headlines nationwide.

“But because the attack was foiled, the story risks fading into the background. And it wasn’t only in Yelewata; a similar plot was also thwarted in Guma Local Government Area,” he said.

Acknowledging the right of Nigerians to demand accountability from security agencies, Usman said the people must also appreciate the  relentless efforts in combating crime, often in the face of scarce resources, outdated equipment, and dangerous working conditions.

“Policing in Nigeria is a high-risk duty. Officers frequently work under intense pressure, covering vast territories with inadequate manpower, while confronting criminals who are often better armed and better funded.

“Despite these challenges, there are countless untold stories of bravery, operations that never make it to the headlines because the attacks were stopped before they could happen.

“The grief of Yelewata still lingers – families torn apart, dreams cut short, and a community left with scars that may never fully heal. Each life lost is a reminder of what is at stake when security fails, and each life saved is proof of the value of vigilance.

“As citizens, our voices must continue to demand justice, transparency, and efficiency from those entrusted with our safety. But alongside those demands, we must also recognise and amplify the quiet victories, those moments when disaster was averted because men and women in uniform stood their ground.

“The foiled attacks in Yelewata and Guma are not the end of our security challenges, but they are moments worth noting. They reaffirm that while criticism keeps our institutions accountable, encouragement fuels their morale. In the balance between the two lies the path to a safer Nigeria,’’ he added.

He said checks revealed that the vehicle had a stolen number plate fixed to disguise its identity.

“This development underscores the need for members of the public to be extra vigilant and security-conscious, as criminal elements continue to devise new tactics to conceal their activities,” Ayanlade said.

He added that the Police Commissioner had directed operatives to immediately impound unmarked vehicles, cars with covered or fake number plates, and motorcycles whose riders wear masks or hoods.

The offenders, Ayanlade said, would face prosecution.

The Command assured residents of intensified routine checkpoints and stop-and-search operations across the state to frustrate criminal activities.

It also urged the public to provide timely and credible information to aid security efforts.
