Ondo police arrest 29-yr-old for allegedly feigning own kidnap to extort parents

Operatives of the Ondo Police Command have arrested a 29-year-old man, identified as Bello Azeez, for allegedly staging his own abduction in a bid to extort money from his family and friends.

Azeez, a native of Ipele in Owo Local Government Area, was apprehended on Saturday after police investigations revealed that he masterminded the scheme after his father allegedly declined his request for a loan of N500, 000 to settle a debt.

According to the police command, Azeez pretended to be travelling to Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on August 11, 2025, before placing distressed phone calls to relatives, claiming he had been kidnapped.

He reportedly pleaded for ransom to secure his release.

Disturbed by the situation, his parents and friends were said to have mobilised funds and launched a GoFundMe account, eventually raising N500, 000.

The police investigation revealed that the ransom was then transferred into Azeez’s personal bank account on his instructions.

The family subsequently alerted the police.

Detectives tracked the phone number used during the negotiations and discovered that Azeez never left Owo town throughout the period of his alleged captivity.

He was arrested and, during interrogation, confessed to the crime.

Confirming the development in a statement issued in Akure, the police spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the suspect will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.

  • Eight shocking details in dismissal of police constable who stole a goat

Eight shocking details in dismissal of police constable who stole a goat

A shocking twist in Taraba State has exposed the embarrassing downfall of a serving police constable whose career came to an abrupt end, not in a blaze of glory but in the quiet theft of a goat.

In what many have called a disgrace to the uniform, Police Constable Usman Mohammed, serving at the Mutum Biyu Division under the Taraba Police Command, was officially dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force on August 15, 2025, after being caught stealing a goat.

The incident, bizarre as it sounds, was not a social media rumor or an internal cover-up, it was handled through formal disciplinary procedures, and the result was decisive: immediate dismissal.

8 Key discoveries from the incident:

    1. The theft happened on duty:

PC Usman Mohammed reportedly committed the theft while still on active duty, raising serious concerns about discipline and integrity within the force.

    2. The target was a goat:

The stolen item wasn’t money, drugs or weapons but adomesticated goat, which he allegedly stole for personal use.

    3. He was caught red-handed:

Usman Mohammed was caught in the act by community members, not fellow officers. He was apprehended and the situation escalated quickly.

    4. Evidence was submitted:

Photographic and eyewitness evidence played a role in confirming his guilt. Locals reportedly documented the incident before handing him over to police authorities.

    5. Disciplinary action followed immediately:

Following due process under Regulation 370 of the Police Act (2010, as amended), a disciplinary panel found him guilty of gross misconduct.

    6. CP ordered immediate dismissal:

The Commissioner of Police in Jalingo sent an official signal ordering his dismissal. The directive was firm and swift.

    7. All Police items tetrieved:

The constable’s uniform, ID card and any police-issued equipment were collected immediately upon dismissal. His access to official systems and pay was revoked.

    8. His service record updated with dismissal status:

To close the chapter, his official police file was marked with dismissal status, which disqualifies him from any future government security appointments.

This scandal, while seemingly minor compared to more serious police misconduct, struck a nerve with the public because of its symbolism, a law enforcement officer turning thief, even for something as small as a goat ,represents a serious breach of trust. It also raises broader concerns about the vetting, discipline, and welfare of officers in low-income divisions.

  • Fake soldier, serving police officer to die by hanging for armed robbery

Fake soldier, serving police officer to die by hanging for armed robbery

The Akure Division of the Ondo State High Court has sentenced a serving police officer, David Friday, and a self-acclaimed soldier, Innocent Victor, to death by hanging for multiple armed robbery offences in Idanre.

The duo faced a four-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery, and impersonating security personnel.

Prosecution witnesses testified that on January 15, 2021, the men—one in a black police T-shirt and the other in military camouflage—used jack knives to rob victims at different locations in Idanre, seizing cash, a phone, and fuel.

They also assaulted victims and threatened them with a pistol.

Akinleye said both were armed with jack knives and were flashing the headlight of their TVS motorcycle at him.

He noted that men ransacked his vehicle, took N6, 000 from him, and instructed him to fuel their motorcycle with 30 litres of petrol, which he did.

He later discovered that his Itel phone, valued at N8,500, was also missing.

Another prosecution witness, Mr. Lanre Olowogbadegun said he was on night duty at Yaba Junction in Idanre that same night when he saw two men on a black TVS motorcycle one in a police T-shirt and the other in army camouflage.

Olowogbadegun, a security guard, added that the two men ordered him to drop his gun, but he refused.

“Shortly after, the men stopped an 18-seater bus, ordered the driver out, made him sit on the floor, and took all his money,” he told the court.

Olowogbadegun said the men beat the driver with jack knives and their fists, taking N5,000 from him. They offered him (Olowogbadegun) N2, 000, but he declined.

“Around 4 a.m., the driver returned to ask if I knew the two men, and I confirmed that I did. Together, we went to the police station to report,” he added.

When invited by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), the driver identified the man who had robbed him while wearing the police uniform.

The third prosecution witness, Adeyeye Sesan, a transporter, testified that he was returning home when he encountered the two men—one in military camouflage and the other dressed like a policeman.

He said the man in camouflage demanded N10, 000, and when he refused, the man slapped him, dragged him out of his bus, and began to beat him.

The other man, in police uniform, joined in, using a pistol and sticks to assault him, according to Adeyeye.

He said they forcibly took N125, 000 from his pocket and the proceeds of his work for the day. After robbing him, they dragged him back to his bus and injured his leg with a dagger, threatening to kill him with the pistol.

Police prosecutor, Ilesanmi Samuel told the court that investigations revealed Friday was a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force attached to Olofin Police Division, Idanre, while Victor’s claim of being a soldier was false, as confirmed by the Owena Cantonment in Akure.

According to Samuel, both men confessed to the crimes.

In his verdict, Justice Williams Rotimi Olamide held that the prosecution had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge sentenced the defendants to death by hanging.
