Police detain four over staged kidnapping to extort elderly father

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has arrested four suspects for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping to extort N5 million from the elderly father of two of the suspects.FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

She said the suspects, including two daughters of the victim, conspired to fake the abduction in the Jikwoyi area of Abuja to demand ransom.

According to Adeh, the arrest followed a report by one Mr Innocent at the Jikwoyi Divisional Headquarters on July 30, after his 16-year-old daughter left home on July 18 for an exam at Government Secondary School, Karu, and failed to return.

He later received a call from unknown individuals demanding ransom for her release.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jikwoyi Division immediately launched a discreet investigation.

“Through coordinated intelligence gathering and digital tracking, the phone number used to contact the complainant was traced to a residence in Jikwoyi Phase II.

“Operatives proceeded to the location, where they found the daughter in the company of two of the suspects, all seen eating and conversing freely, indicating no signs of distress,” she said.

Adeh said further investigations led to the arrest of the elder sister of the alleged victim and her boyfriend.

She said investigations revealed that the elder sister conspired with her boyfriend— legally married to another woman—to stage her younger sister’s kidnapping in a bid to defraud their father of N5 million.

“It was further uncovered that the staged victim was not only aware of the plan but was an active participant.

“She willingly stayed with the suspects throughout the period of her alleged abduction.

“The elder sister remained at home and feigned ignorance, watching her parents’ anguish and emotional distress as they struggled to raise money for the supposed ransom,” she said.

Adeh said the four suspects were currently in police custody and had voluntarily confessed to the crime.

She said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

Adeh said the Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT,  Mr Ajao Adewale, had strongly condemned the act of betrayal and manipulation, particularly one perpetrated within the family.

He urged parents and guardians to pay close attention to their children’s emotional wellbeing and behavioural patterns to encourage regular and honest communication at home.

  • Why I rejected 17,000-dollar bribe – Police officer

Why I rejected 17,000-dollar bribe – Police officer

Sentome Obi, a Superintendent of Police (SP) attached to the Bayelsa State Police Command, was recently honoured by Governor Douye Diri for the honourable act of rejecting a $17,000 bribe. OKUNGBOWA AIWERIE spoke with him.

What informed your decision to reject a 17,000 dollars bribe?

Well, integrity counts. $17,000 is actually a huge amount of money. But we are working for the society; our salaries are from tax payers and we must justify it. So, integrity counts in this case. Those were the facts that necessitated my rejection of the $17000 bribe.

Can you recount what happened and how you ended up rejecting it?

It was a case based on incredible intelligence of suspects who specialise in organ harvesting, rituals and other fraudulent activities. Based on credible intelligence, it was acted upon and the suspects were arrested and several items were recovered. Which goes to confirm that the intelligence was credible.

The suspects now decided to bribe their way out so that it would not come to public knowledge. But based on the training and the integrity we have been mentored and tutored to uphold, we rejected that offer and they were brought to book.

The suspects were paraded sometime last year; around 7th of December, 2024. They were later charged to court.

Do you regret refusing the bribe, knowing that $17,000 is a lot of money?

Not at all. Regret is not even to be mentioned in this case. $17,000 is a huge amount; that is millions of naira. I have never seen that type of money in all my life. But you will recall that it is a regimented organization. The integrity of the organisation is at stake.

Now, ordinarily, some people must have felt like why didn’t we collect the money and just enrich ourselves? But what comes ahead is better than what they are thinking. And today, as you can see, the governor has rewarded me with a three-bedroom bungalow and a brand new car.

So, integrity really pays. You will agree with me that many people have negative perception of the police. But this is going to tell you that we still have the good ones. And to make it clear to everybody in the society, in every organisation we have the bad eggs.

So, the police is a reflection of the society. The authorities keep on educating, sensitising and telling us. We also have other seasoned police officers who have integrity.

How did your family react to the news that you rejected the bribe? Were they happy or sad that you missed an opportunity to become a millionaire?

It was mixed feelings. Some were happy and others were not. But in the end all are now happy based on the reward from the state government and recognition by various bodies.

The Nigeria Police Force has a negative image in the eyes of many Nigerians. Do you think rejecting the money will help in projecting a positive image of the police?

Very well. It has gone a long way to tell people that we still have good police officers and we are trying our best to leave up to expectations.

What is your advice to fellow officers?

Well, they should leave up to expectations. It is not just about the money; integrity counts: who you are, the family that you are coming from, the organisation that you are representing. So, why not do your best? Do the work as it is, forget about bribe, forget about intimidating, forget about turning white to black. The reward actually pays off just as you have seen.

If you have this opportunity again, will you reject or accept it?

I will keep on rejecting and perhaps more bedroom flats and more cars will come as rewards.

Has the police authorities taken cognizance of what you have done?

Very well. I fact, it might interest you to know that I won the best police officer of the year 2024. The IGP awarded me that, and the President, who was represented by the Senate President, was there to give me the award.

I am also the IGP award winner of the integrity police officer of the year. These show that the police hierarchy took cognizance of every effort made by policemen.

Police arrest school guard over murder of caregiver, toddler in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a school security guard, David Moses, in connection with the brutal murder of a caregiver and a 14-month-old toddler at Clear Hope Foundation Academy, a private school in Dawaki, Abuja.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, who briefed journalists on Friday, described the incident as “heartbreaking” and called for immediate reforms in school security vetting procedures.

The victims, 55-year-old school nurse Chinyere Anaene and baby Nanenter Asher Yese, were declared missing on July 23, 2025. That same day, Anaene’s husband received a disturbing ransom call demanding ₦250 million for their release.

The command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit launched a digital tracking operation, leading officers to Yelwa and Uke villages in Nasarawa State. Investigations revealed the crime was orchestrated from within the school by Moses, who was initially considered a victim.

According to the CP, Moses confessed to luring Anaene into a school bathroom where his accomplice, Sunday Irimiya, was hiding. The duo struck Anaene on the head and strangled her. Moses then strangled baby Nanenter, placed both bodies in a sack, and smuggled them out using a scavenger’s cart before dumping them in a canal.

Shockingly, even after the murders, the suspects demanded ₦3 million in ransom, pretending the victims were still alive. A dispute over the ransom led Irimiya to stab Moses in an attempt to eliminate him. Wounded, Moses fled and was intercepted by police operatives combing the area.

He later led officers to the canal, where the decomposing bodies were recovered.

The police have also arrested the school’s principal, two other security guards scheduled to be on duty, and the Chief Security Officer of the private security company that deployed Moses.

Adewale said, “This incident painfully underscores the critical need for schools and institutions to properly vet all security personnel in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force”.

He extended the Command’s condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them of justice.

“We understand that no words can capture the pain of this tragedy, but we stand with you in your grief and are resolute in ensuring that justice is done”, he noted.

The police said they have intensified efforts to apprehend the fleeing accomplice, Sunday Irimiya, and called on residents of the FCT and surrounding communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
