Our operatives also intercepted “one chance” robbers operating minibuses, who had attacked victims with machetes and stolen large sums of money.

“When I assumed office about six months ago, I promised to adopt more effective crime prevention and control strategies. I am pleased to report that these strategies are working. Lagosians are going about their lawful activities peacefully, with improved safety and security.

“Our achievements are due to coordinated operations, continuous support from the Inspector-General of Police, and the logistics, technology, and crime-fighting equipment provided by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. I also commend the public for their timely information and intelligence, which have been vital to our success,” he said.

Notable arrests, according to the CP, included four suspects held for alleged abduction of a 16-year-old boy in Yaba on July 13. He said the suspects stole N2 million and other valuables from the teenager, adding that they were arrested by detectives in different parts of Lagos.

“The crime situation in Lagos is firmly under control. We will continue to improve our response time, dismantle criminal networks, and protect residents, investors, and infrastructure. Police arrest college student for faking own kidnap to extort ₦50m from mother

An 18-year-old student, Moses Amarks, has been arrested by the police for staging his own abduction in a bid to extort ₦50 million from his mother.

Amarks, a student of the College of Health, Kwamba, in Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State, allegedly conspired with a friend, Emmanuel Moses, to carry out the plot.

On July 31, 2023, Emmanuel called Amarks’ mother, claiming her son had been kidnapped and demanding ₦50 million for his release.

According to the Maje Police Division, initial investigations led to the arrest of 22-year-old Emmanuel, who was last seen with the supposed victim.

However, the case took a dramatic turn the following day, August 1, when officers tracked Amarks to Zuba Motor Park in Abuja—alive, unhurt, and alone.

During interrogation, Amarks confessed to faking the kidnap with Emmanuel’s help. Emmanuel had contacted his brother, Jetro, in Kaduna, who arranged a hideout for them in Karji Village, Sabon-Tasha.

They stayed there for six days awaiting the ransom, but when the payment did not come through, Amarks abandoned the plan and returned.

Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, adding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend Jetro, who is currently on the run, while investigations continue.

Police refute fatality claims as fuel tankers explode in Zaria

The Kaduna State Police Command has dismissed reports of multiple fatalities in Monday’s tanker explosion at Dan Magaji, Zaria, insisting no lives were lost in the incident.

The crash, which occurred around 8:30 am near the Rochas Foundation School along the Kaduna–Kano expressway bypass between Kwangila and Dan Magaji, involved two fuel-laden tankers and at least one Volkswagen Golf car.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said, “As at this moment, no death has been recorded. All the affected victims are in the hospital.” He noted that emergency responders promptly evacuated the injured to nearby medical facilities.

His statement contradicts earlier reports, including one by security analyst Zagazola Makama on X (formerly Twitter), which claimed that several people were killed after the impact triggered at least five explosions, sending flames and thick black smoke into the air and cutting off traffic on the busy highway.

Some eyewitnesses also alleged that all occupants of the affected Golf cars died instantly, except one driver who sustained severe burns.

Another source said four people were injured, blaming the crash on a tanker allegedly travelling against traffic and ramming into a parked Golf car.

Emergency services and security operatives cordoned off the scene, diverted motorists to alternative routes and battled to contain the inferno as rescue and recovery operations continued.

The police have assured that investigations are underway to establish the exact cause of the crash and reconcile conflicting casualty figures.

The Nation, however, gathered that four persons injured from the accident have been taken to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, Zaria.

In a series of coordinated operations, the Delta State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda, has recovered a stolen luxury vehicle, seized dangerous firearms, and arrested notorious robbery suspects with a large cache of stolen goods.

Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed on Sunday that the DPO of B Division Asaba, CSP Edewor Akponegware, acted on credible intelligence regarding a stolen Mercedes Benz GLK (Registration Number: NZM10AP) being prepared for sale. Officers from the Crime Branch swiftly intercepted the deal, arresting Chinedu Eze, who claimed ownership of the vehicle.

Investigations revealed the car was stolen at gunpoint in April 2023 in Abakpa, Enugu State, during which the rightful owner was shot.

The vehicle, initially registered in April 2023 and re-registered in 2025, has been recovered, with further efforts ongoing to arrest other suspects.

Police: Sowore not tortured in custody, detention lawful

The Police on Friday night dismissed allegations that the arrest of political activist, Omoyele Sowore was illegal and that he was being tortured in custody.

The clarification, contained in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, followed a wave of protests about Sowore’s detention.

The statement reads: “Contrary to the falsehoods being circulated, Mr. Sowore was arrested based on credible, corroborated allegations involving criminal offences such as forgery, cyberstalking, and other infractions currently under active investigation.

“The arrest was effected in full compliance with extant legal provisions, and with strict adherence to constitutional safeguards, due process, and the rights of the suspect.

“To be clear, Mr. Sowore was released on bail well within the 48-hour constitutional window, in accordance with the provisions of Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“He is fully aware of the nature of the allegations against him and has been duly informed of the charges. He is expected to appear before a court of competent jurisdiction in the coming days to answer to the accusations in a lawful and transparent judicial process.”

Continuing, the police described as false and grossly misleading, allegations that Sowore was tortured or subjected to any form of inhuman or degrading treatment while in custody.

The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy for torture, in alignment with the provisions of the Anti-Torture Act, 2017, and in fulfilment of Nigeria’s obligations under applicable international human rights instruments, he said.

“The viral image of Mr. Sowore with a bandaged arm has been mischievously presented to mislead the public and stir unwarranted outrage. For the record, the bandage was part of his personal belongings at the time he honoured the Police’s invitation-prior to his arrest and detention.

“In any case, upon receiving the report that Mr. Sowore was later seen wearing the bandage while in custody, the Inspector-General of Police promptly ordered an internal investigation to ascertain how he had access to it during detention, particularly in light of his consistent refusal to undergo medical examination by the independent teams deployed by the police.

“This proactive step underscores the IGP’s unwavering commitment to transparency, professionalism, and strict adherence to established custodial protocols.

“In the spirit of accountability and transparency, the Force promptly responded to the claims of brutality by dispatching a medical team led by the Medical Director (MD) of the Muhammadu Buhari Police Hospital, to conduct an independent examination on August 7.

“Mr Sowore declined the evaluation. A second medical team, this time led by the Force Medical Officer, was sent on August 8, and again, access was denied by the suspect. These refusals are officially documented.

“While the police respect the individual’s right to decline medical assessment, the record must show that the opportunity for independent medical verification was twice provided and twice rejected,” said Adejobi.

The police denied allegations that the continued detention of Sowore was arbitrary, explaining that it was anchored on a valid remand order issued by a competent court of jurisdiction.

“Every action taken by the Nigeria Police Force in this matter has been underpinned by legal authority, devoid of malice, bias, or political undertones,” it said, urging the media, civil society actors, and the public to exercise greater diligence, restraint, and professional responsibility in their reporting.

“Sensationalism, particularly when driven by those with personal vendettas against the police leadership, poses a clear risk to public trust and the integrity of ongoing investigations.

“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the protection of human rights, respect for the rule of law, and the pursuit of justice without fear or favour. No individual, regardless of their status, influence, or social media reach, is above the law,” it said.

  • Sowore to face criminal charges in court – Police

Sowore to face criminal charges in court – Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Saturday said charges against human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) Omoyele Sowore are criminal.

NPF said Sowore will soon face them in a competent court.

Police said he was arrested based on credible, corroborated allegations involving criminal offences such as forgery, cyberstalking, and other infractions currently under active investigation.

The arrest, the police said, was effected in full compliance with extant legal provisions, and with strict adherence to constitutional safeguards, due process, and the rights of the suspect.

The police also denied allegations of torturing Sowore following his recent arrest in Abuja.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police emphasized that Sowore was granted bail within the 48-hour constitutional limit as stipulated in Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Adejobi said Sowore had been informed of the charges against him and was expected to appear before a competent court in the coming days.

Responding to viral images of Sowore wearing a bandage on his arm, the police described the narrative of torture as “false and grossly misleading.”

The NPF said the bandage was part of Sowore’s belongings before his arrest, and was not a result of any injury sustained in police custody.

Adejobi said; “To be clear, Mr. Sowore was released on bail well within the 48-hour constitutional window… He is fully aware of the nature of the allegations against him.

“Equally false is the narrative suggesting that Mr. Sowore was tortured or subjected to any form of inhuman or degrading treatment while in custody”.

The Police claimed that two separate medical examinations were offered to Mr. Sowore on August 7 and 8, conducted by teams led by the Medical Director of Muhammadu Buhari Police Hospital and the Force Medical Officer, respectively.

Adejobi said both offers were reportedly declined by the activist.

“The record must show that the opportunity for independent medical verification was twice provided and twice rejected,” the Police added.

The Force further stated that his continued detention was backed by a valid remand order from a court of competent jurisdiction, and warned against what it described as “sensationalism” by some civil society groups and media actors.

He said; “The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the protection of human rights, respect for the rule of law, and the pursuit of justice without fear or favour. No individual regardless of their status, influence, or social media reach is above the law”.

Adejobi said the Police will provide further updates as investigations continue.
