    A police officer, Inspector Obic Modestus, has been summoned for disciplinary action after a viral video surfaced showing him assaulting an Uber driver in Lagos.

    The incident, which has sparked outrage, was posted on social media platform X by user @dammiedammie35 (Oyindamola).

     In the video, Inspector Modestus is seen assaulting the Uber driver while repeatedly shouting, “Are you mad?” Despite pleas from passengers in the vehicle, urging the officer to desist, Modestus allegedly dragged the driver to a police car and later returned to demand that the video footage be deleted.

    Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that Inspector Modestus had been summoned by the Complaint Response Unit (CRU).

    Inspector Obic Modestus has been summoned for disciplinary action after a viral video emerged showing him assaulting an Uber driver in Lagos.

    The video, shared on social media platform X by user @dammiedammie35 (Oyindamola), has drawn widespread condemnation from the public. 

    In the footage, Inspector Modestus was seen physically attacking the driver while shouting, “Are you mad?” 

    Despite passengers’ pleas for him to stop, the officer allegedly dragged the driver into a police vehicle and later returned to demand the deletion of the video.

    Reacting to the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) has summoned Inspector Modestus. 

    He added that the officer will be handed over to the Provost Department for appropriate disciplinary action.

    “The Lagos State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh, will not condone any form of incivility to members of the public,” Hundeyin stated.

    Police, hunters foil kidnappers attempt to collect N14m ransom in Ondo

    A kidnap gang operating around the Ikare axis of Ondo State met their end after a failed attempt to collect a N14 million ransom, as hunters and the operatives of the Ondo State Police Command engaged them in a fierce gun battle, leading to the rescue of their victim.

    One of the kidnappers, Babuga Muhammed from Oyo State, was apprehended and is currently receiving treatment after sustaining injuries during the shootout.

    Acting on credible intelligence, police officers laid an ambush near Supare Mine, the gang’s rendezvous point and intercepted the suspects in a forested area.

    Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, confirmed the development, stating that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing gang members, some of whom escaped with gunshot wounds.

    In a separate operation, three additional suspected kidnappers were arrested, including Abubakar Bamoh, identified as a key logistics supplier for kidnap syndicates operating across state lines.

    According to the CP, investigations revealed that Bamoh played a crucial role in a kidnapping incident in Osun State, where a victim was abducted and held in a forest near Igbara-Oke Mine in Ondo State.

    Afolabi also disclosed the arrest of two suspects, Hammed Olabode and Adegoke Olayemi, who specialize in vehicle theft from unsuspecting members of the public.

    The Imo State Police Command has confirmed that the 15 students earlier declared missing while traveling from Onitsha to Okigwe for the rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have been found and reunited with their families.

    The command announced this on its official X handle on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in response to an online inquiry about the students’ whereabouts.

    According to the police, the students were located along the road where the vehicle they boarded had developed a mechanical fault during the trip. Officers secured the students and ensured their safe return to their respective families.

    The command wrote: “It is true that they made the travel to Okigwe, where they were scheduled to write the UTME. However, their vehicle developed a mechanical fault while on it, but they were secured and have now returned to their families.

    Police arrest two suspected kidnappers in Taraba, rescue operation ongoing in Niger

    The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested two suspects for alleged involvement in kidnapping, banditry, and illegal possession of firearms.

    According to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, officers attached to the Taraba State Command, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended one suspect, Lookman Tanko, after trailing a group of suspected kidnappers. 

    Recovered from him were one AK-47 rifle, a pump-action shotgun, and a long gun.

    In a separate operation, detectives from the Force Intelligence Department – Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) also arrested Peter Apai, a 45-year-old man from Mubai District, Ardo Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State. 

    The arrest followed intelligence reports linking him to kidnapping and illegal possession of arms. Items recovered from him included one AK-47 rifle, one pump-action shotgun, and an AK-47 magazine.

    Both suspects are currently in custody and undergoing investigation. Police authorities confirmed that they will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

    Meanwhile, in Niger State, following the abduction of seven persons by suspected kidnappers who invaded Tungan-Boka and Masaha villages in Mashegu Local Government Area, operatives of the Niger State Police Command, in collaboration with local security teams, launched a rescue operation. 

    The team tracked the suspects to a forest near Tungan-Boka village, where a gun battle ensued. Further updates are expected as the operation progresses.

    Adejobi said, “In the ensuing duel, the kidnappers were overpowered, and the seven kidnapped persons were rescued unhurt.

    The police also said in Plateau State, acting on credible intelligence, Police operatives attached to the state command raided a criminal hideout along Bauchi Road in Jos North Local Government Area of the State.

    Adejobi said, “An abandoned ash-colored Golf Wagon was recovered. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 500 rounds of 7.65mm ammunition. These recoveries are linked to an ongoing investigation into a culpable homicide case reported on May 3, 2025, where an unidentified individual was killed. Efforts are being intensified to locate and arrest the perpetrators of these acts.”

    The Anambra Police Command has recovered a dead body found hanging on a tree in a bush at Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state.

    Spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga said the discovery was made following a call through the deceased phone by unidentified person.

    He said the body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue, while efforts were ongoing to contact the family for necessary action. 

    According to him, the Command is taking proactive measures to unravel the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

    He added that Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu charged officers and men of the Command to step up surveillance and intelligence gathering to nip to the bud crime and criminality in the State.

    He said: “The commissioner had charged officers and men of the Command to uncover the circumstances surrounding a disturbing incident on 16th May 2025 of a dead body, found hanging on a tree in a bush at Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area. 

    “Information revealed that an unidentified person called through the deceased phone to report the discovery of the body hanging on a mango tree in a bush.  

    “Meanwhile, the body has been identified and deposited in the morgue and efforts are ongoing to contact the deceased family for necessary action.”

    There is a growing tension in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, following the killing of a female student of the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, Miss Emmanuela Ahenjir, at the early hours of Friday at Wurukum Roundabout.

    The Nation learnt that the deceased student went out with some friends on Thursday night and was returning home at about 4:00am, when on arriving Wurukum Roundabout met a police road-block.

    It was further gathered that the driver of the car conveying them took the other side of the road and refused to stop when police operatives flagged him down for a routine check; and that it was at this point that one of the officers allegedly opened fire, which hit the lady at her waist.

    Report said she later died before medication could come.

    Meanwhile, there are threats that if by Tuesday next week, the identities of the police officers responsible for the killing are not made public; the city of Makurdi will be shut down.

    “Makurdi will witness a total shutdown through a peaceful protest. We will not relent. We will not be silenced. Justice must be served, and those responsible must be held accountable”.

    Ukan Kurugh, a Human and Gender Rights Activist, Voice of the Voiceless, and Messenger of Necessity, stated on his Facebook page

    “To the Commissioner of Police, the time to act is now. We have exhausted every peaceful and lawful avenue to seek justice, if we continue to be ignored, we will respond differently”, he threatened.

    Kurugh urged the public to anticipate the colors of the day which is BLACK. “Wait for further instructions. Do not wait until it hits your own home, stand up now,” he said.

    Efforts to get confirmation from the Police Public Relations Officer, CPS Sewuese Anene, failed, as she did not respond to the text message sent to her.

    Some policemen from Ketu Division, Lagos State have arrested a 28-year-old ex-convict, Olayinka Oluwaseyi, for an attempted robbery on Mile 12 Bridge.

    The suspect, who was reportedly armed with two knives, was apprehended about 1:30 a.m. on Monday while attempting to rob a male motorist. His arrest followed the intervention of a police patrol team on surveillance in the area.

    One of his accomplices escaped.

    According to preliminary investigations, Oluwaseyi was released from prison three months ago, where he was held for a similar offence.

    Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the suspect remained in custody and would be arraigned after investigations.

    “We will not tolerate criminality in any form. Lagosians can rest assured that we are committed to making the state safer for all,” Jimoh stated.

    He urged the public to remain watchful and to report any suspicious movements or individuals to security agencies.

    The Oyo Police Command, in partnership with Fimihan Adeoye Security Consult has organised a three-day seminar for Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and Tactical Commanders across the state.

    The training, with the theme: “Building capacity for effective Superintending” was to improve service delivery of Police personnel.

    Oyo Commissioner of Police Johnson Adenola said training for Police officers is very essential for everyday activities because if knowledge not updated, it becomes outdated. 

    He noted that the training will talk about use of firearms, basic Police duty, the interagency synergy, investigation processes, and investigation report writing among others.

    He, however, said Nigerians, particularly people in the state at the end of the training should expect professionalism and improved Police training. 

    “As you can see, the men receiving this training are not the men on the road. We have their commanders, the DPOs, the head of tactical teams.

    “But it is a sort of train-the-trainer. We expect that when they leave here, they will go and cascade that training to the men working under them. So essentially, it will ultimately get to the boys and the expectation is improved service delivery.”
