Police arrest firearm fabricator, three other suspects in Enugu

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested four suspected criminals in separate operations in the state for offences of firearm fabrication, armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, cultism, and drug trafficking.

Two firearms and quantities of weeds suspected to be “Loud” were recovered, reflecting the proactive policing strategies of the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa.

A statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe on Wednesday, disclosed that on May 9, 2025, operatives of the Crack Tactical Squad recovered a Beretta pistol from Ikechukwu Ugwele, alias “Angle 90,” aged 35, following his initial arrest and the recovery of weeds suspected to be a premium variant of marijuana popularly known as “Loud”.

“He confessed to several criminal activities and led operatives to the firearm’s recovery,” the police said.

Similarly, on May 8, 2025, the statement said police operatives of the command’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad arrested Emmanuel Eze, alias “Camara,” aged 25, and recovered a locally made pistol.

Ndukwe said: “His arrest followed confessions by Uchenna Nwudi, alias “Asai,” aged 29, and Eze Chiadikobi, aged 32.

“Nwudi confessed to being a fabricator of firearms, while Chiadikobi is involved in transformer vandalism. The suspects confessed to being members of the Vikings Confraternity.

“All the suspects will be arraigned upon the conclusion of investigations.

“Recall that CP Giwa, during a press briefing on May 8, 2025, reported the arrest of 291 suspects since assuming office in March. These include the arrest of 42 suspects for armed robbery, 33 for kidnapping, 12 for murder, 6 for unlawful possession of firearms, 5 for rape and defilement, 44 for cultism, and 149 for other crimes. He also reported the rescue of 36 kidnapped victims and the recovery of 44 firearms, 173 rounds of ammunition, and 20 vehicular exhibits”.

The CP reaffirmed the command’s resolve to sustain the fight against unrepentant criminals and urged citizens to remain cooperative and vigilant in ensuring public security and safety.

  • ‘Tiger Base’

    ‘Tiger Base’

When about 35 civil society organisations (CSOs) jointly petition the Senate to investigate “the alarming activities” of a police unit in the country, their allegations should be investigated.  Their petition, titled ‘Urgent Call for the Senate’s Investigation into Human Rights Violations by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Imo State Police Command, Tiger Base,’ was intended to “draw urgent attention to the alarming allegations of human rights abuses and corruption involving the Tiger Base, Owerri.”

The petitioners said the allegations against the “notorious” police unit include “unlawful detention, torture, coercion, and extortion” and “reflect a disturbing pattern of misconduct that must be addressed swiftly and decisively.”  It was set up “to tackle incidents of violent crimes, but the activities of the unit bear no resemblance to the requirements of the law or professional policing standards,” they stated.

To support their petition, the CSOs attached to the document “a serialised investigative journalism report,” which they said “reveals shocking accounts by victims, survivors, relatives of victims and survivors, activists and human rights defenders and witnesses of egregious human rights atrocities, corruption and flagrant abuse of power sustained by impunity and the failure of the police and police oversight authorities to investigate allegations and ensure accountability and justice.”

According to them, the reported incidents “indicate a fundamental failure of the police to uphold the law, protect citizens, or adhere to ethical standards. The culture of impunity that allows these excesses to persist is detrimental to public trust in law enforcement and justice in Nigeria.”

The petitioners claimed that “Several petitions and reports about the atrocities going on at Tiger Base have been ignored and the atrocities continue unchecked and unabated,” and alleged that there were “similar police tactical units across various states.”

They argued that “The failure of the authorities to investigate cases to ensure that perpetrators are brought to account and victims gain access to justice sustains the atmosphere of impunity that allows rampant egregious police abuse.”

For instance, they stated,  “the silence by the police authorities over the findings from the police investigation ordered by the Inspector-General of Police into allegations of arbitrary arrest, unlawful detention, torture, extrajudicial killings and organ harvesting brought against some police operatives attached to the Anambra State Rapid Response Squad (former SARS Awkuzu) by a whistleblower bears testimony to the disposition of police authorities to cover up the atrocities of their personnel rather than ensuring transparent investigations and taking appropriate actions to demonstrate that the police hierarchy is not complicit or does not condone or cover up atrocities.”

The Senate should treat this petition with the utmost seriousness. Also, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has a duty to look into the matter because it is in the public domain.

Police boss decorates Metchie as best DCG intelligence as NFSS concludes training of senior officers

Deputy Commander General (DCG), Intelligence, of the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS), Ambassador John Metchie on Saturday received award as the Best and Most Accommodating DGC Intelligence.

The award was bestowed on Metchie by the Commander General of NFSS, Dr. Joshua Wole Osatimehin, at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Training Workshop organised by NFSS management for senior officers and men of the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Provost units. Over 400 personnel of the Service participated in the training.

While handing over the trophy to Metchie, who is also the African Director, International Association of World Peace Advocates, (IAWPA), the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Ajao Adewale, praised the NFSS for its contributory role in the fight against violent crimes in Nigeria and commended Amb. Metchie for the honour, which he described as well deserved.

IOsatimehin said the training was to equip participants with both the technical skills and the mental resilience, critical thinking, and leadership required to excel in their duties, adding that the instructors selected were among the best, urging them to take full advantage of the knowledge and experience they bring.

He reminded them that competence without character was dangerous and advised them to keep their focus on the values of loyalty, integrity, accountability, and patriotism.

Metchie said that the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS) has the capacity to strengthen the country’s security framework, especially in hard-to-reach forested areas and emphasised the critical role of intelligence in ensuring national security, even as he stressed that forest guards possess valuable on-ground information capable of addressing insecurity in remote regions.

He said that with the NFSS Bill passed by the two chambers of the national assembly, the ball was now in the court of President Bola Tinubu to assent to it, in order for the Service to contribute towards the realization of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, one of which he was to empower and deploy a special force to secure the vast forested areas of the country which he noted was critical to ending terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminalities in the country.

Metchie also praised the strategic leadership of NFSS Commander-General, Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, particularly for his efforts in pushing for legal recognition of the service and organizing capacity-building for its personnel.

In a significant boost to inter-agency cooperation, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have pledged support for the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS).

The endorsement came at the closing ceremony of a specialised training for the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Provost departments of the NFSS in Abuja.

Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ajao Adewale, said collaboration among security agencies is critical to combating insecurity, particularly in forests. He noted that the FCT, surrounded by vast forest and mountainous terrain, had become a hideout for criminals migrating from other states.

“Fighting insecurity is not the job of one agency alone. Intelligence is the lifeline of any security operation. This training shows your readiness to raise your operational standards,” he said.

Adewale commended the NFSS for its proactive approach and called for continued synergy in data sharing and intelligence-based policing to improve community safety.

Chairman of the NDLEA, retired Brig-Gen Buba Marwa, who was represented by the agency’s Deputy Director of Operations and Investigation, Kayode Raji, also praised the NFSS for investing in intelligence training. He assured continued collaboration, especially in the fight against drug-related crimes within forest regions.

“No single agency can fight crime alone. Security must be networked to be effective and to prevent inter-agency friction,” he added.

FCT Commandant of the NSCDC, Olusola Odumosun, lauded the NFSS for its commitment to national security, reiterating the Corps’ readiness to continue partnering with forest security operatives to safeguard lives and property.

Commander-General of the NFSS, Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, said the training was part of efforts to enhance the capacity of key departments to coordinate better with other security bodies.

“The Department of State Services (DSS), the military, and the police all participated in the training to share their experience. Our officers are now better prepared, more confident, and strategically positioned to tackle insecurity in forest zones,” he added.

Osatimehin urged NFSS personnel to continue to build on the momentum and strengthen inter-agency collaboration in the security architecture.

Police arrest 17 suspected killers of two NDU graduates

The police in Bayelsa State have arrested 17 suspected cultists in connection with the alleged killing of two graduates of the state-owned Niger Delta University, Amassoma, following renewed cult attacks in the state.

The suspects were reportedly arrested at the weekend along the Tombia-Ammasoma road.

Among the 17 persons were four suspected cyber fraudsters popularly known as the Yahoo Boys for allegedly sponsoring the killings of the two students.

Senior police sources noted that the arrest of the suspected killer-cultists was made possible by the ‘stop-and-search’ operation mounted on the road by the men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) headed by one police officer, CSP Bishop Elemide.

It was gathered that upon receiving the police radio alert of the incident which occurred at Gbarantoru area off Ammassoma road, the RRS squad mounted a road block and apprehended the hoodlums when a Suzuki mini-bus was stopped.

A police source stated: “We saw over 13 boys cramped inside the vehicle with blood stains on a few of the suspects. Their machetes were also stained with blood. The police immediately suspected they were the ones who carried out the killing.

“Upon questioning, the police discovered that they went to the scene of the crime in two mini-buses. One developed fault while escaping, and they decided to abandon it and use a minibus.”

Another police source, however, said the boys were suspected members of the notorious Vikings cult group, asserting that the killing of the two university graduates was sponsored by four Yahoo boys.”

Contacted on the development, the spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Musa Mohammed, confirmed that some arrests were made by the men of the RRS.

He, however, said that the level of involvement of each suspect was under investigation.

“Yes, some major arrests have been made and the command is investigating,” Mohammed said.

Meanwhile, a report has, however, claimed that the two murdered graduates were members of the Neo Black Movement known as Black Axe Aye, while others claimed they were members of the Bobos cult group.

Already, the members of the Vikings in the Bayelsa Varsity and other secondary and higher Institutions of learning in the state capital have reportedly gone into hiding for fear of reprisals.

Some fun seekers in bars and lounges in Yenagoa, the state capital, claimed to have noticed strange movements as some fearsome looking boys have been vigorously searching for rival cult members to take revenge on.

In the last week, some parts of Yenagoa have witnessed strange sounds of gunshots suspected to be an exchange of gunfire among rival cult groups.

On Sunday morning, two rival cult gangs threw the popular commercial hub, Swali ultra-modern market, into confusion with heavy exchange of gunshots, which led to the killing of one person.

While a police source claimed that some gunshots were from policemen chasing the cult boys driving around town in a covered plate-numbered car, others claimed the shooting was among rival cult groups.

A senior police officer assured that the State Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, and his men were vigorously working around the clock to stem the worrisome trend.

The officer said: “We are working serious to end this nefarious cult clashes and bring those involved to book. We have made many arrests and the State Government have also provided support and warned politicians to steer clear of influencing the police investigation. Those arrested will face the law.”

The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated the importance of obtaining a permit for vehicles with tinted glass.

According to the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, anyone driving a car with tinted, shaded, colored, or darkened glass must secure a valid permit.

The law allows a 14-day window from the date of purchase or importation for the replacement of such glass or obtaining official approval.

The police clarified that this regulation applies to all vehicles, including those with factory-fitted tinted glass.

The authorities emphasised adhering to this rule to avoid legal issues, encouraging drivers to “stay safe, stay stylish, and stay legal”.

The statement reads: “So here’s the gist: If you’re walking or biking under the sun with your tinted shades on—no wahala. Rock that look!

“But if you’re driving a car with tinted, shaded, coloured, or darkened glass, the rules are different.
