…tight security in Abuja over protest

Protesters, who had gathered to express their grievances, were thrown into disarray as the tear gas canisters sent many scampering for safety.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Monday dispersed them with tear gas in the Maitama area of the nation’s capital.

The protest, which is part of a nationwide demonstration spearheaded by the Take-It-Back Movement and other civil society organizations, began on Monday morning to draw attention to several national issues.

Our correspondent, who monitored the situation, observed a police helicopter hovering around the nation’s capital, monitoring happenings from above at about 10 am.

As part of the security arrangements, authorities had placed a blockade around the Three Arms Zone, where top police officials were expected to attend the ceremony honoring the service of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Key among the concerns raised by the organizers are the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act, the worsening economic hardship in the country, and what they described as a “state of emergency” in Rivers State.

The demonstrators carried placards bearing inscriptions such as “Stop the Repression” and “Let Us Breathe” as they marched through the streets of the Federal Capital Territory.

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore joined by Deji Adeyanju; a human rights lawyer was also present at the protest ground to show solidarity with the movement.

In a statement released last Friday, the National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, said the protest was aimed at resisting what he termed the “increasing authoritarianism” of the current administration and to demand urgent relief for Nigerians battling inflation and insecurity.

There were no reports of injuries or arrests, but the atmosphere remained tense.

The National Assembly complex — one of the protesters’ intended destinations — remained largely deserted due to the ongoing legislative recess. Lawmakers are scheduled to resume on April 29.

Despite the disruption, protest leaders insisted that the demonstration was both necessary and timely, stressing the urgent need for government action to address rising economic hardship, insecurity, and perceived efforts to silence dissent.

Some residents who spoke with our correspondent urged security operatives to handle the situation without a crisis.

UPDATED: Police fire teargas at protesters in Rivers

Police operatives on Monday morning fired tear gas canisters at Take-It-Back protesters who had gathered at Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The protest, organised by the Take-It-Back Movement and supported by Civil Society Organisations and the Niger Delta Congress, was met with resistance as police initially asked the demonstrators to disperse peacefully. When the protesters refused, the officers resorted to minimal force, using tear gas to break up the gathering.

Despite the police warning, the protesters began singing solidarity songs and marched within the park before proceeding to the popular Aba Express Road. A Divisional Police Officer had earlier suggested they relocate to a safer location near the Federal Secretariat on Aba Road, but as the protesters reached the CFC Roundabout, security operatives again intercepted them and deployed more tear gas.

The situation quickly turned chaotic, forcing protesters and journalists covering the event to scatter for safety.

The demonstrators demanded the repeal of the Cybercrime Act, which they argued infringes on citizens’ rights and freedoms, and called for the reinstatement of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Security was heavily deployed in the area, with soldiers and more than 15 police patrol vans stationed around the protesters.

Despite the police crackdown, organisers vowed to continue their advocacy for good governance and political accountability.

Amanye King, the Rivers State Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, stated, “We are here peacefully to express our grievances, not to cause harm, yet security agencies are dispersing our people.”

“We want the repeal of the Cybercrime Act, and as Rivers people, we are here to speak against the unconstitutional removal of our elected governor and the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“We are here to demand a government for the people of Rivers State because, as it stands now, we do not have a government.  This government is alien to our people, unconstitutional, and we are here to demand that our Governor be returned.

“We have a social contract with the governor and not with the Sole Administrator.  This is democracy, we are here to match against these issues.

Also speaking, Solomon Lenu of the Coalition of the Rivers State Civil Society said: “It is important for Rivers People to understand that what is happening in Nigeria is a rape on democracy because there is no reason whatsoever why an elected government will be suspended for no just cause. We are in a democracy, not in a dictatorship system.”

Take it Back Movement: Ondo Police warn against protest

The Police Command in Ondo State has warned residents to shun the planned ‘Take it Back Movement’ protest scheduled to hold on Monday in the state.

This is contained in a statement signed and made available to newsmen on Monday in Akure by DSP Ayanlade Olushola, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO).

Olushola, who said that the command acknowledged the constitutional rights of all citizens to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, said the warning was due to the credible intelligence received regarding a planned protest.

According to him, it is imperative to note that the timing of the planned protest is highly inopportuned, given the prevailing security challenges.

“The effort of the command is to stabilise the security situation across the state, and we are concerned that such a gathering could be hijacked by unscrupulous elements.

“This could lead to a breakdown of law and order, thus rolling back the security gains we have collectively achieved in Ondo State.

“We, therefore, urge the leadership of the ‘Take It Back Movement’, their supporters, and other interest groups to embrace constructive dialogue as a means of addressing grievances.

“If they take to the streets in such a manner, it may heighten tensions and heat up the polity,” he said.

Olushola explained that the state Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, had directed all area commanders, tactical team commanders, and Divisional Police Officers (DPO’s) to intensify the deployment of personnel.

The PPRO said Afolabi also directed the deployment of operational assets to all identified public spaces and critical infrastructure to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

According to him, the command reassures the good people of Ondo State of its unwavering commitment to safeguard their fundamental rights and freedom.

He, therefore, called on parents and guardians to dissuade their wards from engaging in acts that could disrupt the peace and stability currently enjoyed in the state.

“The general public is hereby encouraged to go about their lawful business without fear, as adequate security measures have been put in place to guarantee the safety and protection of all citizens.

“Also, the command urges residents to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or any other security agency nearest to them,” he said. (NAN)

Police, protesters head for showdown in Lagos, Abuja

    • Group to hit streets kicking against anti-cyber security law, Rivers emergency, others
    • ‘Action subversive on Police National Day’

A showdown is likely today between the police and a group of protesters in Lagos, Abuja and some other capital cities, such as Ibadan and Port Harcourt.

A massive deployment of security men is expected across the country.

The police warned that it would not take kindly to a protest it described as “potential unrest or confrontation” planned by the “Take it Back Movement”.

It described the action as that of “subversive elements” acting on the pretence of economic hardship.

The Take it Back Movement group said the protest is against cyberbullying and the emergency declaration in Rivers State.

It added that it opposes the “illegal” extension of tenure for Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

The group said its members would converge under the bridge in Ikeja, Lagos, the frontage of the National Assembly complex in Abuja, Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt and Iwo Road in Ibadan.

While the police cautioned against the protest, which it described as sabotage having fallen on National Police Day, one of the organisers, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, a politician, insisted last night that the protest would go on.

Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner, said: “The Nigeria Police Force acknowledges the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful protest.

“However, given the significance of April 7 as National Police Day, we urge the organisers to reconsider the timing of their planned demonstration.

“This is a day of national reflection and recognition for the force, and it is important that the occasion is not overshadowed by potential unrest or confrontation.

Read Also: Police caution against nationwide protest planned on national police day

“In line with best global practices adopted by nations in celebrating the achievements of its Police institution, the Nigerian Government has taken the bull by the horns by declaring every April 7 as National Police Day.

“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is, however, questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act that is capable of rubbishing and maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole.

“The Nigeria Police Force hereby advises the organisers to shelve this planned protest as it is ill-timed and mischievous.”

The police spokesman added that the National Police Day event would host high-profile dignitaries from within and outside the country, including foreign Inspector-Generals of Police and diplomats.

Sowore said there was no going back. Rather, he insisted it was the police that should reconsider their programme.

He said: “Regardless, tomorrow’s (today) protest must go on across Nigeria. Nothing can stop the movement of the people!”

    ‘Protest is subversive’

The Lagos Police Command also issued a similar warning in a statement by its Deputy Commissioner Tijani O. Fatai.

It said: “Intelligence report at the Command disposal reveals a plan by some subversive groups parading themselves as Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and other misguided anti-government forces, to incite nationwide protest on 7th April 2025 aimed at drawing the attention of the government to their perceived prevailing high cost of living and free speech suppression.

“Furthermore, the groups have flooded the social media platforms with narrations geared towards winning public sympathy, discrediting the government and galvanising support for the protest.

“Experience has shown that criminals may want to seize the opportunity of the protest to cause mayhem, particularly to launch attacks on government facilities and opposition leaders to disrupt socio-economic activities in the state, amongst others.

“Consequently, the Commissioner of Police has ordered security measures to be beefed up around critical installations and other strategic locations across the state in order to forestall any untoward development before, during and after the proposed protest.

“This is to ensure all law-abiding citizens go about their normal business throughout the period unhindered; to ensure free flow of traffic in the state throughout the period of the protest; to ensure the security of lives and property in the state before, during and after the protest.

“Forces available: Manpower for this operation will be drawn from the Department of Operations, Ikeja; State Criminal and Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCIID), Yaba; Area Command Headquarters, Rapid Response Squad, Alausa; Task Force, Oshodi; PMF 2 Keffi; 20/22 PMF Ikeja; 23 Keffi; 43 Lion Building; 49 PMF Epe; 63 PMF Ikorodu; Counter Terrorism Unit Base 2, Special Protection Unit Bases 2, 16, 17 Lagos, and Anti Bomb Disposal Base 23, Lagos.”

“The governor also promised to intensify security cooperation with states that share boundaries with Abia so as to build a formidable security architecture that would ensure that criminals don’t stray into Abia from such states for the purpose of committing crimes on Abia soil, as was the case in this situation.
