    Police launch special operation to free kidnapped Afenifere youth leader

    • AYCF seeks his rescue

    A team of special forces from Ondo, Kogi Police commands with tactical and intelligence experts from the Force Headquarters have been deployed in a rescue for the kidnapped Afenifere Youth Council President, Prince Eniola Ojajuni, The Nation has learnt.

    The team was deployed following a marching order from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, after he got wind of the incident.

    Ojajuni was kidnapped by gunmen at Akuni, a border town between Ondo and Kogi states on February 17. However, news of his abduction only became public over the weekend with a video of him pleading for his life going viral on Monday.

    Police sources told our correspondent that no complaint was initiated about the kidnap, adding that the high commands only became aware of it from the viral social media posts.

    “Special forces are combing the bushes of Ondo and Kogi. There was an order from the IG that intelligence, technical and tactical experts be deployed alongside operatives of both commands to ensure his safe rescue.

    “The Intelligence Response Team (IRT) is also part of the operation and they are doing what they know best to assist ground forces in locating the criminals,” said the source.

    Meanwhile, the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF)  has condemned the abduction of Ojajuni.

    It, therefore, called for his release.

    In a statement, its President-General, Yerima Shettima, said Ojajuni’s kidnap was worrisome.

     The Ogun State Police Command has advised the public, especially those who lost their vehicle/motorcycle to theft or abandoned around Abeokuta, to report at Lafenwa Divisional Headquarters for identification and claim within 14 days.

    The vehicle is one Toyota bus with registration number FST 378 XK and  Bajaj motorcycle with no DGB 346 VN, a statement by Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said.

    Police begin screening for successful candidates Wednesday

    The Police headquarters Zone 7 will commence medical screening for successful candidates who participated in the Computer Based Test (CBT).

    The screening is particularly for indigenes of the Federal Capital Territory and Niger State who applied for the 2022/2023 recruitment exercise for the Nigeria Police Constable on Wednesday to Wednesday, March 12th, 2025.

    According to a statement on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 7, Muhammed Abdulkadir: “Candidates are advised to log in to https://apply.policerecruitment.gov.ng to verify their qualification status for this stage and print out the slip.

    “The qualified candidates will see their Medical screening centres, date, and time on the slip, which must be produced at the screening centre together with other relevant documents.

    “Candidates should note that their National Identity Number Slip (NIN), Form submission slip, as well as their Invitation Slip for the medical screening is very important.

    “Candidates are also to appear in clean White T-shirt, White shorts, white socks and white canvas.

    “The approved Medical screening Centre for Zone 7 Command Headquarters, Abuja which comprises candidates from the FCT and Niger State is Area One Police Hospital Garki, Abuja, FCT.

    “The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 7 Command Headquarters, Abuja, AIG Mohammed Usaini Gumel, advice candidates to conduct themselves in an orderly manner and abide by the instructions provided during the screening.

    “He further called on them to be wary of fraudsters, as the exercise is completely free”.

    Police arrest ex-convict for car theft in Jigawa

    The Jigawa State Police Command have arrested an ex-convict for allegedly stealing a car in Jahun Local Government  Area (LGA).

    The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police Lawan Shiisu, made this known in a statement in Dutse yesterday.

    Shiisu said the suspect, identified as Alhassan Isa, a resident of Shuwarin Village, Kiyawa Local Government Area, was arrested after stealing the car in Aujara Village in Jahun Council.

    “On February 21, about 8:30a.m., one Abdurrahman Sadiq, a staff of Nigeria Institute of Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) reported at Dutse Police Division and reported that his motor vehicle, a Mazda 323, model f, with Reg no. MNA 139 HK had been stolen

    “The vehicle owner, a resident of Aujara villige, Jahun LGA, said that he forgot the key inside the car, but unfortunately, when he woke up in the morning, he discovered that it had been stolen,” the command’s PRO said.

    Shiisu said on receiving the report, detectives from Dutse Division and the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Dutse swung into action.

    “And following a collaborative effort and in-depth investigation, one Alhassan Isa ‘m’ (a.k.a Tata) of Shuwarin town of Kiyawa LGA was arrested and the stolen vehicle was recovered in his possession,” the spokesman said.

    TikTok: Police counsel social media influencers on Cybercrimes Act

    The Nigerian Police have urged social media influencers to put into cognisance the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024 while creating content for the society.

    The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Salman Dogo Garba, made the appeal at a workshop for media influencers by the Social Media Awareness and Promotion Development Association (SMAPDA).

    At the event, held at Bristol Palace, Kano, the CP, who was represented by the command’s spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, told the participants to pay attention to their safety and security in the light of their enhanced visibility in the public space.

    Garba noted the importance of their roles in the promotion of inter-ethnic harmony and national unity, urging them to prioritise these virtues for the good of the country.

    The police also cautioned the participants against spreading and disseminating fake news, hate speeches and negative contents.

    Founder/Executive Secretary, SMAPDA, Sharfaddeen Bature, raised concerns that the northern Nigerian content creators were being underutilised, despite their talents.

    The Nigerian Police have called on social media influencers to ensure compliance with the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024 while creating content for public consumption.

    The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Salman Dogo Garba, made the appeal at a two-day workshop organized by the Social Media Awareness and Promotion Development Association (SMAPDA) for media influencers in Kano.

    Speaking at the event held at Bristol Palace, Kano, Garba—represented by the command’s spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa—advised participants to prioritize their personal safety and security, given their increasing visibility in the digital space.

    He also emphasized the crucial role of influencers in promoting inter-ethnic harmony and national unity, urging them to use their platforms responsibly.

    The police further cautioned against spreading fake news, hate speech, and negative content, highlighting the potential consequences under the new cybercrime law.

    SMAPDA’s Founder and Executive Secretary, Sharfaddeen Bature, expressed concern over the underutilization of talented content creators in Northern Nigeria. 

    He noted that security agencies could leverage digital platforms for community engagement and information dissemination.

    Addressing participants at the “50 Million Plus Followers Connect” workshop, Bature emphasized the growing impact of influencers on brand promotion and public opinion, stressing that SMAPDA—comprising over 300 influencers from 19 northern states—aims to professionalize content creation and unlock its full economic potential.

    “We have many talented influencers promoting various products and ideologies, but they often operate without proper structure or support. Our goal is to bring them together under one umbrella to enhance their impact and create business opportunities,” Bature said.

    He also urged the government and other institutions to leverage the association’s network in reaching out to the public.

    Bature urged media influencers to work with regulatory bodies like the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) and security agencies to ensure responsible and structured content creation.

    Police rescue 6 children found alone in Lagos building

    Operatives of the Lagos Police Command have rescued six children from a building within an estate in the Ejigbo area of the state, the command’s spokesperson, Mr. Benjamin Hundeyin, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) told newsmen on Saturday.

    According to Hundeyin, the police received information on Tuesday at about noon that six children were staying alone in a building.

    ‘The case was transferred from the Ejigbo Police Station to the Gender Unit in Ikeja after reports indicated that the children were left alone in a residential house.

    “The children, aged between seven and 13 years, have been rescued and are currently in a protective shelter through the Ministry of Youth and Social Development,’ he said.

    Hundeyin said initial findings revealed that their mother was currently abroad for medical treatment and had left them in the care of a caregiver.

    The spokesperson added that efforts were underway to contact their mother, and investigations were ongoing to gather more details about the case.

    Police detain father, friend for impregnating stepdaughter

    The Lagos State Police Command has detained a 38-year-old man and his 30-year-old friend for allegedly defiling and impregnating his 14-year-old stepdaughter.

    The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed this in a statement yesterday, said the suspects allegedly conspired to sexually defile the girl in the Okokomaiko area of the state.

    Hundeyin said the mother of the survivor reported the case at the Okokomaiko Police Division on Friday.

    He said: “The survivor’s mother said that her daughter was defiled by her husband and his friend.

    “The case was transferred from Okokomaiko police division to the Gender Unit, Ikeja.

    “The survivor is now carrying a nine-month pregnancy.”

    The police image maker said the case would be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

    Clash claims five lives in Edo, as police say joint operation ongoing

    Five persons were last night confirmed dead by Edo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Moses Yamu, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), adding that  four other persons were also injured in the clash between cocoa farmers and alleged produce thieves at Gbelemotin in Ovia Southwest Local Government Area of Edo.

    Yamu said: “The clash involved Gbelemotin and Maidoti communities in the same Ovia Southwest LGA of Edo State.

    “Joint operation by police with the Army, other security agencies and vigilance members is ongoing, and the situation has been brought under control.

    “Investigation into the cause of the clash has also commenced.”

    Our reporter gathered that the clash started on Thursday night, but escalated on Friday, with many houses burnt in the communities.

    It was learnt that an Ikale cocoa farmer hired some vigilance members to guard his cocoa farm, which had been invaded by some suspected Izon Boys, while the vigilance members killed five of the Izon Boys on Thursday.

    The Friday morning’s counter- attack was carried out by some Izon Boys who were sympathetic to the five boys, who were allegedly killed by the vigilance members.

    A major stakeholder in the area, who spoke in confidence, said: “The Izon Boys were stealing produce belonging to a Yoruba man.  The boys are from Kolombor (Gbelemotin).

    “On Friday morning, there was a counterattack. Soldiers and other security personnel have been deployed in the area.

    “The cocoa the boys were stealing belonged to Yoruba farmers in the area, particularly at Madotti Camp.”

    The source also described the incident as unfortunate, but avoidable, while urging the youths to always be meaningfully engaged.

    Police rescue kidnap victim in A’Ibom

     The Police Command in Akwa Ibom,  said it had rescued a kidnapped victim and recovered his stolen vehicle during a tactical operation in Ikot Ekpene area of the State.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Saturday.

    John said on Feb. 13, the command received information on the kidnapped of the man along Okop Eto Road and taken to an unknown destination by the kidnappers.

    “Based on credible intelligence, operatives of the command  immediately swung into action and  engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel.

    “The hoodlums, overwhelmed by superior firepower fled with severe gunshot injuries, leaving the victim unharmed.

    “The victim was rescued unhurt, his vehicle recovered and has since been reunited with his family,” he said.

    The command spokesperson said item recovered during the operation was one Lexus RX 350 SUV, ash in colour.

    She said efforts are in top gear to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

    John said that investigations are ongoing to recover weapons used in the crime and bring those responsible to justice.

    She said the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom Command, Baba Azare, has commended the officers for their swift response.

    She said Azare assured residents that the command remains resolute in its fight against criminal elements in the state.

    John urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station for prompt action.
