Two policemen missing in Benue herdsmen attack

The Benue State Police command at the weekend declared four of their men missing after a patrol vehicle in which they operated was set ablaze.

It was ambushed by suspected herdsmen in Logo Local Government.

The incident occurred in Tse Akpam village, Azege, Mbaya, Tombo ward on Saturday.

It was gathered that the police patrol team came under attack when they responded to a distress call that herdsmen and their cattle were destroying crops and setting houses ablaze in Tse Akpam village.

A community leader in Azege, Unande Timothy, said on telephone that the police patrol team went after the herdsmen.

He said at a point there was no road for the patrol vehicle and they parked the van and continued to chase the suspects on foot.

According to Unande, some herdsmen retreated to set the patrol vehicle ablaze.

Benue State police spokesman Moses Yamiu, said the police had launched a search for their missing men who he said were on confidence-building patrol when they were ambushed by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Yamu confirmed that the herdsmen set their vehicle ablaze.

However, two of the missing policemen returned unhurt. Benue State police commissioner Fatai Owoseni confirmed their return.

He said “Two officers rejoined their colleagues. Unhurt. Hoping to see the remaining two.”

Suspected herdsmen still continued with their killings at the weekend with attacks on palm wine tappers in Kaduna and policemen in Benue.

They were linked with the killing of four persons and injuring of one in an attack on Bakin Kogi village in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State yesterday.

It was learnt that the victims were palm wine tappers who came from other communities to conduct their business.

A source told our correspondent on telephone that four of the palm wine tappers were attacked and killed in the bush. One escaped with serious injury.

He said: “Those killed were palm wine tappers, but they are not members of the community. They do come from another community.

“They were tapping palm wine when they were attacked by unidentified gunmen. I cannot tell you where they came from for now. But they are not from our community here.

“Policemen have visited the place and evacuated their bodies. The area is calm as I speak with you.”

Another source claimed that “the attackers in their numbers around 9am, stormed the village from the outskirt, and shot sporadically at innocent persons, killing four and injuring one.

“Other people at the scene escaped unhurt while the victims died of bullet wounds,” the source added.

Commissioner of Police Austin Iwar requested for more time to confirm the story.

“I cannot confirm this to you now. Give me till tomorrow,” he said.

The Command’s spokesman, ASP Mukhtar Aliyu, was quoted to have confirmed the incident though he was yet to get full details as at press time.

“The police spokesman in the district and the Area Commander said they were collating assessment reports in the affected community,” he said.

Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi 11 yesterday advised herders to rein in the criminals among them.

He also urged them to imbibe the culture of patience and perseverance even in the face of provocation by farmers or their local community.

The Emire spoke at the weekend in Minna, the Niger State capital, during a meeting between traditional rulers/North’s leaders and Fulani herders’ associations organised to end  killings and incessant clashes between herders and farmers.

He urged stakeholders to liaise with governors of Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa and Kano states who had indicated interest to allocate grazing reserves, with a view to developing such land to house their cattle.

. Emir Sanusi said Fulani “are neither terrorists nor criminals “as perceived by some Nigerians. He described them as law abiding citizens who respect constituted authorities.

He urged Nigerians to avoid ethnic profiling whenever a crime is committed by persons of certain tribe, adding that criminals have no tribal marks.

The Lamido of Adamawa,  Muhammadu Barkindo Musdafa, attended the meeting. Former Ahmadu Bello University Vice Chancelor Prof. Ango Abdullahi and Dr. Aliyu Tilde, among others, were there.

They met with the leadershipof Fulani socio-cultural groups, such as Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBA), Miyetti Allah Katul Houre and Gan Allah Fulani Development Association.

The Zonal Chairman of the National Executive Committee of MACBA, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, said governors ought to emulate Governors Willie Obiano (Anambra) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi  (Enugu) who had effectively stemmed the recurring clashes between farmers and herders in their states when other governors and the Federal Government were at a loss on what to do.

He said the two governors were open-minded in their approach to tackling the clashes, adding that through stakeholders meetings which included the leadership of the herders associations, farmers’ unions, traditional rulers and community leaders across all the local government areas, they understood the causes of the clashes and found amicable ways of addressing them.

Siddiki said measures, which had worked in stemming the tide of violent conflicts among herders and farmers in the two states, should serve as models to other governors.

“Conflict between herdsmen and farmers has a long history; the solution has been to engage all stakeholders to find an amicable of resolving such,” he noted and urged politicians “to avoid exacerbating the conflict for selfish reasons”.

    …cultists behead man

Policemen attached to various Division in Benin City and environs including traffic wardens on Wednesday abandoned their various ‘duty post’.

No policeman was seen on ‘duty’ in some streets and major roads our reporter monitored.

The non-presence of policemen in major roads and streets of Benin City  might  not be unconnected with the violent protests that erupted in parts of the city over the killing of a driver for refusing to part with N100.

Four operational vehicles belonging to the Edo State Police Command were razed even as policemen fled for their lives during the protest.

Traffic wardens that used to stop and check vehicle particulars were not seen on the streets and major roads.

Meanwhile, suspected cultists have beheaded a man identified as Osazuwa.

Osazuwa, a father of three, was killed at Iyobosa Street off Muritala Mohammed Way, Benin City.

It was gathered that the killing is connected to the renewed cult war between rival cult groups

A witness who craved for anonymity said, “The gunmen came in commando style and started shooting sporadically to scare away people and afterwards attacked the victim (Osazuwa).

“The man tried to run for his life but a member of the gang who had closed on him hit the deceased with a rod and he fell down.

“Other members of the gang immediately descended on the victim and  used cutlass to severe his head”

  • Gunmen kill two policemen in Bayelsa

Gunmen kill two policemen in Bayelsa

Guns boomed yesterday at Ogbia waterside, Bayelsa State, following an attack on a police marine base by suspected pirates.

Two policemen attached to the base were reportedly killed.

The gunmen stole two rifles and a 200-horsepower engine belonging to the Ogbia Local Government Area.

Leader of the marine team, an assistant superintendent of Police (ASP), was said to have sustained injuries and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

It was gathered that the bandits fled with their casualties after the incident, which occurred at 2 am.

A police source, who spoke in confidence, described the exchange of gunfire as massive, adding that a G3 magazine, with 17-live ammunition was recovered from the hoodlums.

“Eighteen expended ammunition was picked on the scene. The hoodlums came to steal the General Multipurpose Gun. It is a big gun mounted on a boat. But the policemen protected it with their lives”, he said.

Commissioner of Police Asuquo Amba said the police were combing the creeks to locate the criminals.

Describing how the attack was carried out, he said: “About 2 am, some unknown suspected sea pirates that came in with two boats from different directions attacked our men that were anchored at marine base at Ogbia and obviously there was a lot of exchange of fire.

“We tried to be as defensive as possible. In the cause of that we lost two policemen who were shot in action and they were able to make away with two of our riffles and a 200-horsepower engine belonging to the Ogbia Local Government Area.

“We were able to recover a G3 magazine, which was used by them with 17-live ammunition and 18-expended ammunition. The firing was not from one direction. It was through separate direction.

“Prior to this time, we had secured our GMP gun which I think was one of the main thing they were looking for. So, they could not steal it and that was why we lost two police officers in action and the officer that led the team, an ASP was equally injured.”

Amba said the police had been able to curtail activities of sea pirates but explained that reports showed a resurgence.

The police boss said he visited the scene with other senior officers, promising that they will fish out the killers.

He said: “For a while we have been able to curtail but it is really rearing its head again. We have appealed to our sister agencies to help. We are all out to ensure that these pirates are checked.

“We have intelligence report that they are trying to increase their activities to sabotage the efforts of the government to secure the highway. This is a recent development and it has given us a cause to sit up. We will restrategise and secure our base and the water areas.

“We have spread our dragnets. We have informed other security agencies and all efforts are being made to apprehend the suspects”.

IGP to Policemen: Distance yourself from IPOB

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has warned policemen to distant themselves from the proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB).

He also warned them to guide against being infiltrated by those who don’t mean well for the country.

He said this in Abuja on Thursday evening when he met with Commanders of Police Mobile Force (PMF) and Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU).

He said: “I am directing you to keep away from people that do not mean well for this country to avoid putting yourselves in trouble.

“Every police officer must remain loyal to his service, government and citizens of this country.  Especially those serving in the Southeast. As much as possible, keep a distance from IPOB and other illegal organisations.

“Don’t allow any of them to penetrate you to work against this country in any way at all.

“I know that in the past, some Police officers were seen taking pictures with him. I believe it is not in the interest of this country to associate yourselves with somebody that came openly to say he wants the country divided.

“These are very serious issues and I want the men to keep a distance from them because they don’t mean well”.

On the essence of the meeting, the police chief said: “I decided to arrange this meeting because I believe that in the coming months, the PMF is going to be tasked with the responsibility to ensure that law and order is maintained all over the country.

“We are now in December and from January next year, it would be a period with highest forms of legal and illegal activities and I believe it is crucial that I summon all of you to ensure that your mind is prepared to provide security for this country.

“There are issues that are bothering this country right now, there are beehives of political activities and this calls for professionalism from all police officers serving in this country.

“With the political activities, people would try to infiltrate you to get your support by indulging yourself in unwholesome activities”.

  • Soldiers, policemen clash in Ondo

    Soldiers, policemen clash in Ondo

Some soldiers and police officers yesterday had a confrontation in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The incident reportedly occurred at Ilesa Motor Park in the capital city.

The timely intervention of leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at the motor park led to an early resolution of their differences, which some residents said could have resulted in a serious bloodshed.

Drivers and passers-by converged on the area while the two groups exchanged altercations.

Sources said the confrontation followed the insistence of some soldiers to prevent police officers from arresting some suspects in the area.

Although the offence of the “suspects” could not be established last night, it was gathered the offence was not serious enough to warrant an arrest.

According to Idrisu, the policemen were stationed at Kubere village, some few kilometres from Gudi, on the Akwanga-Keffi highway, when the gunmen attacked them from the bush.

He said the command had deployed officers from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the mobile police detachment alongside the vigilance group to comb the forest for the suspects.

According to him, the spot had been identified as a flashpoint for kidnapping and other crimes, hence the decision by the command to station its officers in the area.

Idrisu said the command will not be deterred from performing its constitutional responsibility of protecting life and property.

His words: “The hoodlums, by this act, wanted to dampen the morale of the police, as we approach the yuletide, so they can have their way.

“However, the command remains resolute and determined to tackle crime as the Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Uba-Kura, has ordered the deployment of more officers and men to identify flash points across the state.”

Gunmen have attacked Dong and Lawaru villages in Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State, it was learnt yesterday.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy Ahmad Sajoh, who confirmed the incident, described it as “unfortunate”.

Sajoh said the government held an emergency security meeting on the incident and took measures to contain the situation.

He added that military personnel and policemen have been deployed to contain the attackers.

“I can’t tell the number of casualties for now as security men are still there chasing the attackers,” he said.

Police spokesman Othman Abubakar said mobile policemen, soldiers, Air Force and other security personnel from sister security agencies had been deployed to contain the situation.

Abubakar added that extra highway patrol teams were drafted on the Yola–Numan–Gombe road to ensure safety of travellers.

Residents of Numan, the third largest town in Adamawa, are fleeing for safety as rumours continue to spread that the attackers are heading towards them.

“The good disposition and spirit of sportsmanship exhibited by most of the political parties in the election, which doused fear and tensions during the election, is gratifying and highly commendable. “

The deployment is meant to cover all parts of the state, including the riverine areas and difficult terrains.

  • Kidnapping of policemen embarrassing, says IG

Kidnapping of policemen embarrassing, says IG

Inspector General ( IG ) of Police Ibrahim Idris yesterday castigated police officers for being careless to the extent that they are kidnapped.

He described as embarrassing and annoying the recent kidnap of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Sarkin Pawa in Niger State.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Amos Aliyu was on Sunday abducted near his home at Turin Fulani by unidentified persons.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja during a meeting with Commissioners of Police and other senior officers, the IG urged policemen to be careful and protect themselves first.

Idris told Commissioners of Police that they would be vicariously liable should anything happen to any policeman under them.

He said: “There should be more visibility policing. Policemen should be deployed in flashpoint areas to take care of security because the presence of police in those areas would help in the reduction of crime.

“We must take the protection of our officers seriously.  We have a problem; two days ago, one of our DPOs was kidnapped. How can you be a DPO, you have all the policemen under your Command and then you start driving as if you don’t have anybody.

“You allow the useless kidnappers to pick you and your orderly, it is very embarrassing. We had the same issue in Zamfara state where an ACP going on leave travelled alone. It is embarrassing.

“Utilize the men you have and you must protect yourself first. You can only protect others when you are protected because you are a target.

“The information we are receiving is that our ACP’s vehicle was abandoned in a bush and he has not been seen which obviously means that he has been kidnapped. How can we be living with such situation? It is becoming an embarrassment. DPOs and other personnel should be careful of their movement.

The police chief added: “The CP Niger said there is contact already and they are working on it. Policemen who are protecting others should not allow themselves to be target. We should be careful in our movement.

“Our officers have to be concerned about their personal safety first because this issue is becoming an embarrassment. CPs would also be vicariously liable for any policeman that is just picked up like a fowl or anything, it is very annoying.

“We should be careful in our movement. If you notice that an area is not safe, you should deploy men in those areas. We should take their protection very serious. Our policemen should also be careful with the way they move around”.

On the recent law on kidnapping, Idris said: “The Nigeria Police Force is very glad with the law on kidnapping. With the law which is a death sentence for those that would be tried for kidnapping, the spate of kidnapping in Nigeria will be reduced”.

On the Anambra State governor’s election next month, the IG said additional policemen would be deployed to join the 17 units already on ground.

The IG explained that the massive deployment would ensure a credible election in November 18.

He said: “The major challenges we are having now are the elections we would be having in Anambra state and two other states.

“The deployment will involve all commands. We are going to send directives to all CPs for the mobilisation of officers who are the Special Unit and the Conventional police for the election.

“When you receive the directive, act on them promptly because it is going to be a massive deployment. We don’t have time to delay in our planning and deployment because the election date is too close. It is important for us to prepare so that we can provide personnel and logistics in order for the officers to perform creditably.

“It is unfortunate that before this election, we had some minor problems especially in the southeast but I believe the challenges have been addressed because we deployed 17 units there and with the additional deployment requested, we are going to take care of security in that location.”
