The corpse of the deceased policeman has been deposited at the mortuary of Katsina General Hospital, where the other injured mobile policeman was receiving treatment.

  • Zoo bloodbath: How three policemen were killed, by witnesses

Details have emerged how three policemen detailed to protect fun seekers at  Ogba Zoo and Nature Park, Benin, Edo State, were killed by five armed men.

Arms and ammunition belonging to the policemen were taken away. The Executive Director of the zoo, Dr. Andy Ehanire, was kidnapped.

Andy is brother to Minister of State for Health Dr. Osagie Ehanire.

Eyewitnesses and workers at the zoo described the incident as horrible.

They said the policemen attempted to flee, but the attackers shot them.

The Nation learnt that the attackers entered the zoo as fun seekers at different times, bought drinks and chatted with the policemen, while one of them discussed with Dr. Ehanire.

It was gathered that fun seekers fled through the fence.

When our reporter visited the zoo, bloodstains of the policemen were being washed.

A worker, Helen Juchei, said the assailants bought drinks for the policemen before the attack.

She said one of them acted as an informant.

Her words: “Yesterday after I finished my duty in the morning, people were  entering the zoo. At that time, my boss had not come. We usually resume before our boss. When he eventually came about 1p.m.,  I told him that I wanted to attend a birthday party. He permitted me and I left for the bash, hoping to come back and assume duty later.

“When I returned about 6p.m., I met three policemen dead on ground. I was shocked. People were running for safety. My boss was abducted.

“Those we met on the scene  told us what happened. They said the kidnappers paid to enter the zoo with a torn currency, which was rejected by the casher.

“When the money was rejected, the gunman went back to get a better note to pay entrance fee.

“At that time, their informants had gained entry into the zoo as fun seekers.

“When the informants  had  studied the situation, one of them chatted with our director.

“Our boss told him he planned to organise a world tourism day. As one of them engaged my boss in a conversation, the other went  to the security personnel and asked him if they had not closed for the day. He then bought drinks for the security guards.

“When they started drinking, the hoodlums opened fire on them and killed three police officers.

“We don’t know the whereabouts of our boss.”

Another worker, Mr. Zontondji Emmanuel, said the hoodlums shot the police officers.

” I was on duty. I resumed at 5:30p.m. and as I came in, I went round to inspect the animals and visitors. Having done that, I came back to the reception where the executive director was sitting. Another person was sitting at this end. Two policemen sat by him. So I went outside to observe things.

“I saw an Audi 80 car parking. Suddenly, I saw three men coming out of the car with guns. One of them wore a bullet proof vest. I thought  they were policemen who always came here for security.

“Suddenly, I saw them running into the zoo, which was very unusual. When they entered, they started shooting. All of us outside ran for our lives.

“I called the people running to give us police numbers, nobody was ready to stop because they were  afraid.

“I watched from afar and  saw the men taking my director away. They went into the Audi car and drove  off. I saw the three policemen, who were supposed to guard the director, lying dead on the floor.

“Later the DPO came to take the bodies away. Everything happened about 5:40p.m.,” he said.

At the home of Dr. Ehanire, his family and relations were shocked.

They refused to speak, noting that what they needed was prayer for the deceased  and release of Ehanire.

Police Commissioner Mr. Haliru Gwandu, who visited the zoo, said the killers were militants.

He said they would soon be arrested.

“It was an unfortunate incident. We lost three of our men. The killers are  militants.

“We are on trail of the hoodlums. We have recovered the vehicles they used to perpetrate the act. We are using available means, including high tech, to fish out the perpetrators.

“They cannot go scot free. Let me assure the public  that we are on top of the situation. They should go about their activities. All hands are on deck to ensure the hoodlums are nabbed,” Gwandu  said.

  • Abia crisis: Fed Govt directs nationwide deployment of policemen

Abia crisis: Fed Govt directs nationwide deployment of policemen

The Federal Government has directed the Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris to deploy policemen nationwide, following the crisis in some parts of Abia State.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo handed down the directive yesterday at a meeting with Idris on the outbreak of violence.

After the briefing, Idris told State House Correspondents that the police was adopting a three-pronged approach to resolve the crisis.

He said: “The strategy we are using is to ensure that we deploy policemen throughout the country.

“Secondly, we are in touch with the government.

“We are trying to mobilise the political leadership to be able to intervene where necessary on how to reduce the tension that is already taking place in the Southeast.”

But he said efforts are on to quell the little tension in the Southeast.

He said: “I don’t think there is tension in the country. Which country? This is Nigeria? No. Nigeria does not have any tension. At least you are in Abuja you have gone around there is no tension.”

On allegation by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike that the police are behind criminal activities in his domain, the IG said the governor was expressing a personal opinion on the state’s security situation.

He, however, said police did not have to deny the governor’s allegation that crimes were perpetrated in the state by its operatives (SARS).

Idris explained that the display of a body purported to be that of the police in a crime scene did not indicate that the said policeman was involved in the crime.

“That a policeman was killed in Rivers in connection with the IPOB issue is different from saying that the policeman was involved in a crime.

“You cannot say that the one attacked and killed is the one involved in the crime. Who is the person they were attempting to kidnap?” he queried.

Asked whether Wike was not making any sense, he said: “I just want you to read between the lines. If you have leaders making sweeping allegations, obviously it does not make sense. I don’t want to comment on it.”

Reacting to the October 1 quit notice given to some Nigerians to leave some parts of the country; the IG said there was no cause for alarm.

“I don’t think there is tension in the country; there is no tension here,” he said.

The command’s spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said the Commissioner was unhappy that the the incident occured despite directives from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) that senior officers would be held accountable for the actions of their subordinates.

Famous-Cole said the Commissioner also placed restrictions on the category of persons to sign detention order.

He said: “Yes, three policemen were arrested. I do not have their details but they are being interrogated. The CP directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of Administration to issue the DPO of the area a query for poor supervision.

“He also directed that henceforth, only Heads of Department (HODs), Area Commanders and DPOs are allowed to sign detention orders.

Famous-Cole said the CP had warned that Area Commanders or DPOs would be held liable if their jurisdiction is found culpable in any “unworthy, shameful act of unnecessary detention of citizens.”

  • Traders, policemen clash in Ibadan as govt shuts down plank market

Hundreds of protesters and armed policemen clashed yesterday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, following the closure of the popular Temidire Sawmillers’ Plank Market by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

In a desperate attempt to stop the closure, the traders reportedly resorted to throwing stones, sticks and other objects at the policemen.

In anger, the policemen were said to have tear-gassed the protesters to disperse them and enforce the government’s order.

In the ensuing confusion, a policeman allegedly fired his gun and a bullet hit one of the protesters, identified as Lukman Gboye.

The incident happened five days to the August 1 hearing of a suit filed by the traders at the plank market against the state government.

The police reportedly arrested four of the aggrieved traders – Ogunsola Kazeem, Muritala Mojeed, Kareem Suraju and S. A. Adekola – for resisting the closure of the market.

The traders were said to have been caught napping by the invasion.

They wondered why the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Isaac Ishola, who led the security agents to the market, failed to honour the subsisting court order of the State High Court, presided over by Justice A. A. Gbolagunte of Ibadan Judicial Division.

The suit is between the traders and Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Survey and Attorney-General of Oyo State, the defendants.

Ishola cited environmental health hazards among alleged offences of the traders for the closure.

He said: “The issue here is environmental, not ownership. They burn sawdust, which discharges dangerous emissions that cause health hazards to the people around here. The place is also prone to flooding because there is no drainage.

“The interest of the public takes priority beyond individual or organisational interest. Government cannot just close its eyes when it sees people dying due to health hazards from the sawmill. All over the world, sawmill is located on the outskirts of the town, but this is inside the town.

“So, they have to relocate to the alternative Fasade community, which the government has provided. Due to environmental issues, especially the health of our people, Temidire Plank Market is hereby closed with immediate effect.”

Addressing reporters, the chairman of the market, Elder S. A. Alabi said a meeting was held last Tuesday between the market leaders and the commissioner, where Ishola allegedly threatened to shut down the market for the traders’ alleged failure to honour his invitation in a letter dated Monday, July 17 d by the Ministry’s Director of Administration and Supplies, Mrs. O. O. Adebusuyi.

Alabi said he was unavoidably absent at the meeting but sent representatives to the commissioner.

The traders’ leader expressed shock about what he called the “Gestapo manner by which the commissioner stormed the market with about 22 security patrol vans and disrupted our businesses”.

He added: “Our people are law-abiding. We pay our market rates to the government regularly; the last was paid just last Friday.”

  • IG dismisses three policemen for illegal arrest, extortion

IG dismisses three policemen for illegal arrest, extortion

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has dismissed three policemen for their involvement in illegal arrest, detention and extortion of money from some people.

The dismissed personnel – AP. No 136005 Inspector Okelue Nkemeonye, F/No. 355897 Sgt. Braimoh Sunday and F/No. 359928 Sgt. Yusuf Olukoga – were attached to Area Command, Ijede-Ikorodu under the Lagos State Command.

The policemen, who were armed and pretended to be members of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), harassed their victims and collected N200,000 from them before they were released.

In a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, the Officer in charge of Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU), Abayomi Shogunle, stated that the personnel tagged their victims Internet fraudsters – “Yahoo Yahoo boys”.

Shogunle said the policemen collected N90,000 through the ATM and N110,000 through mobile bank money transfer to a third party account provided by the policemen.

He said the officers were found guilty and dismissed after they appeared at Orderly Room trial at the Zone Two Command Headquarters, Onikan-Yaba, Lagos.

He said the adjudicating officer found them guilty on two charges of offence against discipline as provided for in paragraphs C (ii) Corrupt Practices and E (iii) Discreditable Conduct of the First Schedule of Police Act and Regulations Cap. P19. Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Giving details, Shogunle said: “On the June 21, 2017 the Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) received a complaint via WhatsApp number 08057000003.

“The complaint reads: ‘I went to the bank this morning to deposit money to a company’s account, but there was no network. So, I deposited the money into my personal account to do the transfer to the account later.

“When I came out of the bank, I saw a car packed full of some SARS policemen wearing black clothes with anti-robbery squad written at the back. I was told to enter the vehicle with a gun pointed at me.

“They collected my mobile phone and asked me what I do for a living. I told them that I had just finished my youth service and I am living with my brother. I pointed my brother’s shop to them to stop by and see him because he was the one that sent me to the bank. They refused to wait and they did not allow me to pick my calls or call out.”

The complaint further reads: “I received an alert on my phone with the money I went to deposit. They searched my phone and on seeing the alert, they labelled me as a yahoo boy and told me that I would pay them N1 million.

“One of them slapped me. They drove us around places in Ikorodu, Ijede, Gberigbe, Ibeshe, Igbe, Ipakodo, Itaelewa, Agric and First Gate, harassing people, moving them in the car and collecting huge amount from them.

“They collected N50,000 from me. But I noticed that each junction that we reached, people were hailing their leader by his nickname (OJ Ojewunmi). And one by name Austin slapped me.

“They picked me up around 9am and dropped me at about 6pm in the evening after collecting money from me. They also used my account to collect money from the guys that I met in the car and used my ATM to withdraw from them.”

Shogunle said his team was dispatched to Ikorodu where all the three dismissed policemen, including AP No. 98199 ASP Bayo Obadia, who led the team, were apprehended.

He said preliminary investigation by the unit revealed that the allegations contained in the complaint sent via WhatsApp message actually happened.

“Also, the four police officers, who were armed on the day of the incident, falsely paraded themselves as operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) despite not being posted to SARS by police authorities.

“Investigation also showed that the officers extorted a total sum of N200,000 from the young men who they tagged ‘Yahoo Yahoo Boys’. The money was forced from them via N90,000 ATM withdrawal and N110,000 mobile bank money transfer to a third party account provided by the policemen. All the extorted N200,000 was recovered by the PCRRU investigators.

“All the arrested officers, witnesses and recovered exhibits, including the N200,000 cash and printed bank statement of account, were handed over to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2 Lagos for further detailed investigation and necessary disciplinary measures.

“The approval of the punishment of dismissal from service as recommended by the adjudicating officer is part of the outcome of the disciplinary measures,” Shogunle said.

On what would become of the fourth person in the act, he said: “In the case of ASP Bayo Obadiah, who led the team of the infamous men on this unacceptable conduct, an official query was issued to him by the AIG Zone 2 Lagos, both his reply and Query has been forwarded to the office of the Force Secretary, Force Headquarters, Abuja from where it would be proceeded to the Police Service Commission as required by police regulations.”
