  • Thugs attack Osinbajo’s convoy in Ilorin

Political thugs suspected to have sympathies for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday allegedly attacked the convoy of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

The attack is said to have culminated in life-threatening gunshots, which left at least two supporters of the APC injured.

Many others allegedly got seriously injured while running for their lives.

But a police source revealed the incident, which happened around Isale-Koko, Ilorin suburb, occurred when the Vice President’s convoy had left the area.

When contacted, spokesperson of the state police command Ajayi Okasanmi could not confirm the incident.

Reacting on the development APC governorship candidate in the state Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq condemned “the brazen attack today in Ilorin on the convoy of the Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo by armed PDP thugs.”

In a statement by his media aide, Rafiu Ajakaye, Abdulrazaq said: “The vice president was at Isale Aluko suburb of Ilorin on a door-to-door campaign when some dare-devil gunmen opened fire at his convoy which included thousands of APC members and supporters.

“In what is a reminiscence of the Offa robbery, this attack is the height of recklessness on the part of these street urchins who have long been empowered and armed by the discredited dynasty to terrorise our community and anyone who has contrary views to their amala politics.

“Coming just a day after two of our supporters were killed in Ojoku in the convoy of our senatorial candidate Architect Lola Ashiru, this is becoming too much and the madness must stop.

“Going into an election with these thugs clearly on the loose is an existential threat not just to all of us challenging the misrule in our state but to the entire people of the state and their properties.

“We call for immediate arrest and prosecution of these thugs. We also demand investigations to reveal those who gave the orders for these deadly attacks.

“We call for all measures to be taken to ensure safety of lives and properties and sanctity of the ballot box in Kwara and beyond.

“No one’s political interest should be at the expense of human lives and their properties.

“We insist that a political contest is a contest of ideas and no one must be allowed to cow or kill others in the process.”

  • Political thugs set 30 buildings on fire in Ebonyi

Over 30 houses have been destroyed in pre-election related violence in some communities in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi state.

But the two major parties- The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressive Congress (APC) have continued to trade blames over the destructions.

Commissioner of Police Awosola Awotunde on Monday in Abakaliki appealed for calm among residents over the attacks.

Awotunde, who spoke with journalists after assessment visits to areas affected by the violence, vowed police authority would ensure that perpetrators of the dastardly acts were arrested and brought to book.

The police chief described the incident as barbaric and man’s inhumanity to man.

Awotunde decried the wanton carnage warned against any reprisal.

He said that those involved in the criminal attacks on the communities, including their sponsors would be arrested and prosecuted.

“We appeal for calm and assure the public that police will spare no efforts in ensuring that everyone who is involved in the dastardly act is brought to book including their sponsors.

“The police further reassure the public of commitment to protection of lives and property of every citizen of the state before, during and after the elections”, Awotunde said.

He also sympathised with victims during the assessment visits.

Narrating his ordeals, a victim of the attack, Mr. Donatus Nwofe who spoke to journalists at Aguabata in Agbaja community of Izzi, said he lost two of his buildings and property worthy several millions to the attackers.

Nwofe, who is the chairman of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) Ebonyi council, said that the suspected political thugs invaded his compound and shot sporadically before setting the houses ablaze.

“I lost everything; even the boxers I am wearing were donated to me by a sympathizer, as you can see, no pin was removed from the burnt down houses.

“We now live in fear as no one knows when the hoodlums will attack again with their AK 47 riffles and other weapons.

“I am appealing to police to beef up security in the community and I am also calling on state and Federal governments to come to the rescue of the victims of the attacks,” Nwofe said.

Another victim, Mr Paulinus Onyike said the suspected political thugs from a major political party invaded Izenyi, in Agbaja community and set houses suspected to belong to members of the opposition ablaze.

He said the suspected political thugs who invaded the area, shot indiscriminately before setting houses and other valuable property ablaze in the area.

He described the attacks as barbaric and called for proper investigation and arrest of the perpetrators.

Ebonyi APC chairman, Eze Nwachukwu, said his members bore the brunt of the attacks.

He described the attacks as unprovoked and urged police and other security agencies to intensify security surveillance in the state.

Nwachukwu chronicled the alleged gruesome attacks to include; attack on the senatorial candidate of the party in Ebonyi South Senatorial District, Mr Nweze Onu; attacks on APC members, destruction of their houses and property in Izzi local government area.

Others, according to him, include: attacks and disruption of APC local government rallies by suspected political thugs at Ebonyi, Onitcha, Ohaozara local government areas and destruction of APC campaign office in Ohaozara.

He also listed alleged attacks on the home of APC Zonal Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Ogba at Ezzama, Ezza South on February 16 and attack on members of the party at Ekoli-Edda among others.

But Ebonyi PDP chairman Onyekachi Nwebonyi denied the allegations.

“It is not true. They are the ones attacking our members. I had briefed you on the killing of two persons on Sunday who were attached by political thugs while six others were injured”

“PDP has been very peaceful despite the provocations. The governor, who is a man of peace, have continued to calm the party faithful down and urging them not to retaliate despite the provocations”.

He decried the attacks and called on security agencies to fish-out the perpetrators and bring them to book.

  • Violence mars Ogun APC rally

Political thugs on Monday disrupted the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) rally at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta.

The thugs believed to have sympathies for a party went around the stadium chasing away supporters of the APC governorship candidate in the state, Dapo Abiodun.

Many of them were injured in the process with those adorning the yellow attire of Abiodun specifically targeted.

The thugs were armed with dangerous weapons, forcing Abiodun’s supporters to run for safety.

Many of them removed materials bearing the name of Abiodun to avoid further attacks.

When the campaign finally started with President Muhammadu Buhari on seat, the thugs prevented National Chairman of the Comrade Adam Oshiomhole from addressing the crowd.

Oshiomhole had hardly spoken for a minute before they started throwing stones at the stage, forcing officials to appeal to him to stop.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun took the microphone appealing to the violent supporters to calm down before Vice President Yemi Osinbajo took over.

Osinbajo, an indigene of the state, appealed for support, promising the Buhari-led administration will uplift the people.

The Kabiyesi appealed to youths to avoid being used as political thugs by politicians during the coming elections, adding that majority of the politicians providing them dangerous arms to fight or riot in the country have relocated their families abroad.

  • Don’t be used as political thugs, UN advises youths

United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) has urged Nigerian youths to resist being used as thugs by some politicians to perpetrate evil.

The warning was made during a workshop by UNIC held in the event hall of Igando Local Council to commemorate the United Nations’ World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, which is an annual event.

Contributing to the workshop theme, which is: “Understanding cross- cultural and diversity in peace building”, Director, UNIC Lagos, Mr. Ronald Kayanja, who was represented by an official of the organisation, Mrs. Bolanle Olumekor, enjoined youth not to make themselves willing tools by politicians, who he noted, would only use the them to achieve their ambition only to dump them afterwards.

Kayanja warned that history over the years has demonstrated that violence does not profit, adding that those youths should steer clear of any acts that may lead them to permanently regret in life.

Corroborating Kayanja, chief resource person, Dr. Segun Bolarinwa of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, ( NIIA), had earlier shown a documentary depicting violent conflict in Rwanda occasioned by politics of ethnic cleansing that has almost led to the annihilation of certain tribal group in that country.

Bolarinwa through his lecture, told the over 300 participants that there could be no constructive benefit accruing from violence any day, hence, people should learn to coexist in love, peace and harmony.

Lending her voice to the discourse, President of Violence Prevention Association of Nigeria (VIPAN), Mrs. Olajumoke Israel, posited that the campaign against violence and conflict usually begins from the home, explaining that when there is peace in the family, it will most permeate into the larger society.

“At VIPAN, our major concern is to see citizens of our society enjoy mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence, irrespective of differences in religion, tribe and dialect,” She said.

“In fact, that is the will of God for mankind. This why we are appealing especially to students and all youth to steer clear of any violent act or do anything that may spark off violence”; Israel pleaded.

  • Behind the growing menace of political Thugs (1)

How secret cults, transport unions, others act as breeding grounds for thuggery

Armed youths, including street urchins, motor park touts, ex-militants, members of transport unions and cultists recruited by unscrupulous politicians as thugs to harass opponents and commit electoral fraud are metamorphosing into armed robbers, kidnappers and other forms of anti-social elements, reports KUNLE AKINRINADE.

It was a few minutes past 1 pm on January 23, 2015. High-spirited members of an independent campaign team of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) converged on Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area in Lagos. With a band and a convoy of cars, they moved round the neighbourhoods of the council area, canvassing votes for the party’s governorship candidate, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode.

But the carnival-like rally was soon turned into a scary adventure at Boys Town axis of Ipaja-Ayobo Road as the campaigners were attacked by thugs who were driving past in some vehicles with the inscription of People’s Democratic Party (PDP). They did not only confront the campaigners, they started shooting sporadically, killing one person, injuring five others and vandalising no fewer than 10 vehicles.

Panic-stricken residents of the neighbourhood scampered into safety as the deceased person was shot for displaying APC sourvenirs. Even the incumbent Lagos State Commissioner for Employment and Wealth Creation, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, only escaped death by a whisker as the thugs chased after her car.

An eyewitness of the incident had said: “The APC members were holding a peaceful rally to solicit support for their candidates in the impending elections when they were attacked by PDP supporters who were also passing by. As a matter of fact, the PDP supporters were heading towards Iyana Ipaja in their vehicles when they suddenly turned back and ran after the APC supporters.

“Before we knew what was happening, the PDP thugs had opened fire on the APC campaigners, resulting in the death of an innocent resident, while about five persons were injured. Two of the victims are now in critical conditions. Ten vehicles were vandalised while the people injured have been taken to a hospital.”

    National menace

In a similar incident, armed thugs on October 25, 2017 attacked members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who had converged on the presidential campaign office of the former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido. Lamido had gone to the campaign office to inspect ongoing work at the building located on Rabbah Road and was welcomed by a crowd of supporters. The attack came shortly after Lamido addressed his supporters at the occasion.

In Ebonyi State, no fewer than five persons were injured at Ugwulangwu area of Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state by suspected political thugs working for the PDP on February 5, 2018. The victims included Paul Okorie, Nnachi Okoro, John Ogbonnaya, and two other members of the party. The gun-wielding thugs numbering more than 30 were said to have brutalised the victims who ended up with varying degrees of injuries.

Speaking to newsmen on the incident, Okorie recalled that the attackers invaded the venue where party members were holding a meeting preparatory to the visit of the APC State Working Committee members scheduled for February 9.

He said: “We had scheduled a meeting of a section of Ohaozara Local Government Area of APC for the three wards in Ugwulangwu, preparatory to the visit of the SWC of our party for the continuous voter registration sensitisation exercise.

“The meeting commenced peacefully at about 5 pm and was going on smoothly when midway, some hoodlums came in and disrupted it.

“At a point, they went back and we thought they had gone and continued with our meeting. But suddenly, they came in with more than 30 men in three branded buses, all armed with different kinds of dangerous weapons.

“They shot sporadically and we were thoroughly clubbed and beaten. You can see the cuts and bruises all over my body. They escaped in their vehicles and also took our mobile phones, money and other valuables.”

    Destruction of democratic institutions

Like the attack in Lagos, politicians all over the country are in the habit of using thugs to intimidate the opposition during party primaries or electioneering campaigns. But their activities are not restricted to violent attacks on the opposition to their principals. Events in the recent past have shown that thugs are also hired to snatch ballot boxes, aid stuffing of ballot boxes, seize the mace and disrupt proceedings during plenary sessions in legislative houses.

In 2005, chaos took over Ibadan, Oyo State capital, when thugs, led by one Lateef Eleweomo, a loyalist of the deceased strong man of Ibadan politics, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, invaded the Oyo State House of Assembly in broad daylight, chased out majority of the lawmakers and aided renegade lawmakers who were clearly in the minority to preside over the adoption of impeachment motion of the then governor of the state, Senator Rasheed Ladoja. Policemen drafted to the scene could not salvage the situation as the armed thugs who had gained control of the assembly complex exchanged fire with the minions of law.

In a gestapo manner during the 2015 general elections in Ebonyi State, suspected thugs invaded many polling booths, carting away ballot boxes and other electoral materials. At Onuwakpu Market Square in Ikwo Local Government Area, hoodlums wielding AK-47 rifles, shot into the air to scare voters and officials away before snatching the materials.

Similar incidents were witnessed at Nsokara in Ezza South Local Government Area and in other parts of the state. The member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Constituency, Tob Okwuru, said the attacks were perpetrated by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In a similar vein, armed men suspected to be political thugs reportedly snatched ballot boxes during the 2015 re-run election for governorship and House of Assembly in Ogbor Uvuru, Aboh Mbaise, LGA and Omuma Oru East Council area of Imo State.

In another instance, suspected thugs recently invaded the Senate chamber of the National Assembly on April 18, 2018, forcibly carting away the mace, the parliamentary instrument of authority, during plenary. The incident, which coincided with the unexpected entry of the then suspended Senator Ovie Omo- Agege, caused a temporary suspension of plenary as senators went into executive session.

    Deadly assignments

While political thugs are usually well mobilised with money and ammunition, not a few of them have met their waterloo in the course of executing their benefactors’ assignments.

For instance, the crisis rocking the Oyo State chapter of PDP ended on a fatal note on December 30, 2010 after a former Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Oyo State, Alhaji Lateef Salako a.k.a. Eleweomo,  and two others loyal to some warring chieftains of the party were killed during the local government congress of the party. On the same day, an ex-Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, escaped death when some gun-wielding hoodlums ambushed him during the conduct of the election. Two of his supporters were however shot dead by thugs while about 20 vehicles were reported burnt.

It was the same scenario in Lagos last year during the councillorship primaries of the ruling APC when suspected thugs shot dead a chieftain of NURTW, Rasaq Bello, vaka Hamburger, in the Shogunle area of Oshodi. A fight was said to have broken out at the venue of the poll between two rival groups- Saka/Oposun led by the deceased and Golden Boys led by a youth called Samson. The two groups were allegedly recruited by the party’s aspirants to intimidate each other’s supporters when a brawl ensued and Hamburger was gruesomely killed.

In Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, Lagos State, suspected thugs also set ablaze the council secretariat in Festac Town in protest against the election while parts of Mushin Local Government Area witnessed chaos as thugs disrupted the exercise.

    How they are recruited

Misguided unemployed youths, motor park touts, street urchins, members of Leader, Teslim Folarin, escaped death when some gun-wielding hoodlums ambushed him during the conduct of the election.

In Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, Lagos State, suspected thugs also set ablaze the council secretariat in Festac Town in protest against the election while parts of Mushin Local Government Area witnessed chaos as thugs disrupted the exercise.

    How they are recruited

Misguided unemployed youths, motor park touts, street urchins, members of transport unions, land grabbers, ex-militants and cult members in tertiary institutions are usually recruited by politicians into their standing ‘army’. They are contracted as mercenaries or personal security aides and are provided with arms or weapons to brutally attack or intimidate perceived opponents.

Indeed, street urchins and members of transport unions often openly display their loyalty to certain politicians and the political party they belong to. At the snap of their principals’ fingers, political thugs unleash terror on rival politicians, some of which result in fatality.

At times, in order to shield them from public suspicion, leading political thugs, including ‘repentant’ militants, are offered appointments as aides to governors, commissioners, ministers or high ranking politicians.

For instance, a dreaded militant leader in Benue State, Terwase Akwaza, popular known as Gana, became a security aide to the state’s governor, Samuel Ortom, after he embraced an amnesty programme of the state governor for militant youths. The Tiv militant was saddled with the responsibility of convincing other armed youths to embrace the amnesty programme and return their weapons. The governor also ensured that he was provided with adequate security, a car and other financial perks so that he would not be tempted to go back to crime.

It however turned out that Gana was later fingered for his alleged complicity in the killing of the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Ortom on Special Security, Igbana Denen, a retired police sergeant, and has since bolted without a trace.

Another trick by politicians is to register their mercenaries into an amorphous organisation through which they operate and fight their battles at all times. A typical example is the recent revelation by Ayoade Akinnibosun, one of the suspects arrested in connection with the robbery of some banks in Offa, Kwara State recently, who claimed to be the leader of a group of thugs allegedly working for the Senate President under the name, Liberation Youth Movement Kwara South.

Akinnibosun had said: ”I am the chairman of Liberation Youth Movement Kwara South. My involvement with the Senate President, we are his boys! We work for him at Kwara South. We are the ones that hold Kwara South for him. We have been working for him since we were in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); it has been long, when he was governor of Kwara State.

“We are the ones that do political arrangement for him. For example, where we can’t win, we make ‘dabaru’ arrangement there…we scatter elections if we don’t win.” Saraki has however denied links with the suspects, alleging that they were being linked with him because of his tiff with the Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Idris.

  • I have no link with murder suspects – Ogun lawmaker

The majority leader of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Yinka Mafe, on Friday denied link with suspected political thugs  being detained by the Operatives  of the Zonal Intervention Squad (ZIS) in Obada Oko, Abeokuta, in connection with murder.

The Nation reported that four persons suspected to be political thugs were arrested and detained by ZIS in connection with bloody shooting and killing of one person in Sagamu, Ogun State.

The suspects – Olushola, Olusegun, Azeez and Abolore were arrested a week ago when ZIS Operatives stormed their den in Sagamu, for allegedly killing a man popularly called Arsenal-Nice in the town.

ZIS confirmed that some arms and ammunition were recovered from the suspects, who allegedly claimed to have links with Yinka Mafe, a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly (OGHS), representing Sagamu State Constituency 1 as their sponsor.

But reacting, Mafe said he was shocked to see his name being linked with the suspects, adding that at no point was he invited by the police for questioning.

The lawmaker challenged the police to produce four suspects they claimed to have arrested and charge them to court, even as he called on the Inspector General of Police to take over the case for proper investigation.

He also challenged on the police to charge him to court where he would have opportunity to defend himself instead of dropping his name in the media for political reasons.

Mafe said: “I was very shocked to read about the report because as an honourable man and the majority leader of Ogun State House of Assembly, I do not have a business sponsoring cultists especially at this moment when I have nothing to gain in sponsoring them.

“I am more surprised because this is coming at a time when we all know that Ladi Adebutu is visiting Sagamu and it is in the public domain he’s the one sponsoring the fake news against my person.

“We also know that he’s the one using the office of the AIG in Zone II and I have to put it on record that those names released by the police are not in the custody of police, it’s all lies and I know the police cannot produce the four persons.

“I was aware of the person that was reportedly killed, he was killed about seven year ago and it is in the public domain that he was killed during an infighting between cult groups and both sides recorded casualties, he was one of them.

“We have been working to have peace in Sagamu and that is what we are enjoying today and it saddens my hearth that Adebutu is bringing the name of Sagamu and Remo in the news for bad reasons because we’ve worked on these boys, counselled and re-orientated them and we are enjoying peace in Sagamu.

“It’s a pity that a lawmaker from the area whose governorship ambition is dead on arrival is trying to muscle out opposition to his ambition in Remo because he believe he owns Remo, but at the appropriate time, we will let him know Remo is not for sale and he can’t buy Remo.”

  • Lawmaker indicted as police arrest ‘political thugs’ for murder

Operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad (ZIS) in Ogun State have arrested four suspected political thugs in connection with the killing of a resident of Sagamu, popularly called Arsenal-Nice.

The suspects – Olushola, Olusegun, Azeez and Abolore – were arrested last Thursday when ZIS operatives from Obada Unit in Abeokuta, the state capital, stormed their hideout in Sagamu, for allegedly killing Arsenal-Nice.

The arrest followed a complaint at the ZIS that the suspects, who were also believed to members of a cult group, attacked the victim’s home and killed him.

It was learnt that some arms and ammunition were recovered from the suspects, who are currently in the custody of ZIS.

The suspects allegedly named Yinka Mafe, a member of the House of Assembly representing Sagamu State Constituency I as their sponsor.

The complainant had reportedly told ZIS that the suspects were allegedly on the payroll of a lawmaker.

He said this emboldened them to terrorise Sagamu and its environs.

Police spokesperson for Zone II at Onikan, Lagos State, Dolapo Badmus, said the matter was under investigation.

She said the suspects had confessed, adding: “The case is under investigation. They (suspects) said they work for one politician. But we are investigating it. We won’t expose it until we get to the last stage.

“But the cogent thing is that they said they work for a politician. We are still trying to verify the claim.”

Reacting to the allegation via a small messaging service (SMS), Yinka Mafe, who is the House of Assembly’s Majority Leader, dismissed it as a “beer parlour gist”.

The lawmaker said the suspects should be charged to court of competent jurisdiction where he, as a lawyer, would defend himself.

He added: “Well I don’t react to a beer parlour gist. More so, I rather they are charged to the court of competent jurisdiction so I can have my day in court as a lawyer to defend myself. Thanks.”

  • How political thugs killed my son, by widow

The mother of 25-year-old Ibiowei Emmanuel yesterday narrated how he was killed on his way to cast his ballot in the December 5 and 6, 2015 Bayelsa governorship election.

Mrs. Martha Emmanuel said her son, in company of six other voters, was ambushed between Okoroma and Diebu.

She regretted that despite being a widow, her son, who was the family’s breadwinner, was killed for politics.

Mrs Emmanuel spoke in Abuja at a media briefing organised by the Coalition Against Electoral Rights Violation (COAGRIV).

The distraught mother urged the Federal Government to intervene in the killing of her son and prosecute election offenders.

She said: “My son was on his bed, sleeping; he did not want to go out. But we later agreed to go to the polling unit, hoping to get some money to take care of ourselves. I told him that since my party was different from his, he should just go. So, someone from his party called him. We hoped to meet in Yenagoa.

“Later, I heard that some people were parading around the waterways. It was in the evening someone called that the boat conveying my son and others to their polling unit in Yenagoa was shot at. They tried to discourage me that it was not my son; they hid it from me until a woman told me it was my son.”

The boat’s captain, Abulekala Oyere, blamed the attack on inter-party rivalry.

He said everyone in the boat could swim but only the deceased died because he was allegedly shot during the attack.

Oyere said: “We got information that some people had taken over the waterways. So, we took a different route, not knowing that the route had also been ambushed. Between Agwobri and Angiamagbene, we were attacked by some people in speed boats with two horse power.

“They started shooting; some people jumped into water. They drove to the boat and destroyed it. After 15 minutes, we started searching for one another until the next day. It was on Tuesday morning people from the coastal community alerted us that they saw a body floating on the river.

“So, we picked him and went to Okoroma Police Station to lodge a report. The body of the deceased is in the mortuary.”

COAGRIV’s Secretary General John Thompson called for a presidential panel of enquiry to probe the killings during the Bayelsa poll.

He urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) to ensure that perpetrators of electoral offences are brought to justice.

Thompson also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to partner other government agencies to end killings during elections.

He said: “Our preliminary findings on the massive human rights violations and abuse point to some ex-militants in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area…”

The activist accused the former militants of masterminding political killings in connivance with some soldiers.

  • Police arrest 14 political thugs over violence in Kano

Fourteen political thugs were yesterday arrested by the police over their involvement in the burning of ballot papers and boxes in Kaura Mata in Madobi Local Government Area.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, lbrahim Idris, said the thugs numbering 19 stormed Kaura Mata polling unit in attempt to disrupt the accreditation process.

He said the police swiftly responded and was able to bring the situation under control, resulting in the arrest of 14 of them, who are currently being detained.

Idris explained that INEC immediately replaced the burnt materials, and voting resumed soon after.
