  • Suspected political thugs kill two in Kogi attack

    An official of the Kogi State Government has been shot dead by suspected political thugs, a week to her retirement after 35 years in service.

    Killed along with her was a saxophonist at  the Crowther Memorial Anglican Church, Lokoja,Mr. Gbenga Kekere.

    They were gunned down penultimate Friday on their way back to Lokoja from Bassa.

    The Kogi State government described the attack  as tragic, sad and senseless.

    They were in the company of other people in two buses belonging to the Anglican Church when the yet to be identified thugs unexpectedly  opened fire on the vehicles,mistaking the occupants for political opponents.

    The State Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Shola Collins Adebayo said the case was under investigation.

    The victims’ corpses were deposited at the Ankuri Hospital morgue while the  injured are still receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

    Kogi State Deputy Governor  Yomi Awoniyi visited Archbishop Emmanuel Egbunu to console with the church over incident  saying the state has lost one of its finest and best hands in Mrs.Alhassan.

    He described the death as even more sad, coming a few days to her 60th birthday .

    He described Alhassan as a wonderful personality, a complete woman and mother, saying her death was not only a loss to her immediate family but to the entire state.

    The Deputy Governor prayed God to grant her widower, her children and the immediate family the fortitude to bear the loss.

    The late Mrs Joe Alhassan  was an architect.

  • Police arrest thugs with arms in Osun

    Police in Osun State have arrested two suspected political thugs in Ilesha town.

    Found in their possession were dangerous weapons, including axes, cutlasses, arms and ammunitions.

    Security men drawn from the Police Mobile Training College, Ila recovered the arms near the collation centre for the results of the Osun East senatorial election at Ilesa Grammar School, Okesa.

    It was gathered that two vehicles, including a white unregistered Toyota Hilux van and an 18-seater commercial in which some guns, axes and cutlasses were recovered had been impounded by the police at the Ilesa Area Command.

    An informed source said that the thugs in the two vehicles escaped into a nearby market when they realised that the police had closed in on them, thereby making it difficult for the security men to apprehend them.

    However, the driver of one of the vehicles and an Okada rider suspected to be their informant were arrested.

    The two suspects and the recovered arms had been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department of the state police command in Osogbo, the state capital.

    The Police Commissioner in charge of Elections in Osun State, Mr. Sam Okaula, who confirmed the incident, said the case would be thoroughly investigated.

  • Political thugs clash in Ondo

    SCORES of people were injured yesterday as thugs suspected to be working for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clashed in Idanre, Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State.
    The clash, according to sources, occurred shortly after the results of the Saturday’s presidential election were announced in Abuja.
    During the clash, it was gathered that several people were arrested.
    A resident, who pleaded for anonymity, said the “hoodlums” fought in Anaye Market Square, Ojota, Sabo and Palace Road.
    The clash paralysed social and commercial activities in the town for several hours.
    Police spokesman Wole Ogodo said the police were on top of the situation.
