  • Going home tonight? Pray and fast!

Traveller, you must set out/ At dawn,” counselled Wole Soyinka, poet and Nobel laureate, “And wipe your feet upon/ the dog-nose wetness of the earth.”

Though the protagonist in the poem, ‘Death in the Dawn’ died in a tragic crash, a cruel irony of technology consuming its own creator, the message was clear: set out early and you should reach your destination in time.

In the Lagos traffic of latter days, however, such commonsense logic would appear to have vamoosed. You may set out early or late; but you must arrive late — very late.  That is why you must not only vigorously pray before leaving your office at the close of work, fasting — dry fasting too — might not be a bad idea!

Hardball is guilty of arrant exaggeration, right?  Just wait.

On November 3, two colleagues left The Nation’s Matori, Mushin, Lagos head office, after work.  One, a female, left around 8pm. The other, a male, left around 10pm. The destination of both: Journalists Estate, at Arepo, which though in Ogun State, is on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. If you discount the normal Lagos metropolitan traffic, that trip should last less than one hour.

But on this day?  The one that left at 8pm reached her house at about 2:10 am — solid six hours later. If she was flying to London from Lagos, she probably would be touching down at Heathrow!

And the one that left at 10?  Marginally luckier — but just: he got home at about 3am, another solid five hours!  If he was travelling to Accra, Ghana from Lagos, he would have touched down at Kotoka International Airport, at 10:45 and hit his hotel, latest by 11:30. By 3am, he would have had no less than three hours of sound and sweet sleep! Yet, here he was, sweating it out on a jammed road, in a dark night, in the midst of a swearing, angry and cursing stranded co-commuters, in the middle of nowhere!

You still feel one doesn’t need prayers and fasting to commute to his house, after another hard day’s work?

But what is it with our country — does Nigeria have so much time to burn on nothingness? Why didn’t somebody somewhere monitor things and take prompt action before they fester beyond measure and inflict on people needless pains?

The gridlock is said to have been caused by some bad parts on the ever-busy expressway.  But then, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) have their road camps all over the place.  Didn’t their engineers spot a minor rupture on that road, grow into a pothole and extend into a crater, so much so that a three-lane traffic now contracts into a bottle-neck of one, causing that hideous traffic snarl?  Must citizens suffer and die (yes, die: because the stress these avoidable gridlocks inflict could cause some citizens fatal ailments) before the authorities act?

That portion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway falls within Ogun territory. But even all over Lagos, bad roads abound. Just after the NAFDAC Lagos office at Oshodi, heading towards Agege Motor Road, is a crater from which many articulated trucks and tankers have stumbled.  Yet, that crater gapes as wide as ever, like some wide-mouthed malevolent god, waiting to swallow its latest victim!

How long will citizens continue to endure such avoidable pains?  Someone, somewhere must sit up — and fast!

Nigeria at 55: Pray for the country, Rep urges

He said: “Election is over and governance must commence. Nigerians cannot afford four years of politicking. As a member of the opposition, I’m not in the House to oppose unnecessarily. Good policies focused on the interest of the people will be supported by me, while policies that will not favour the people will be completely rejected not on the ground of my party affiliation but in the total interest of Nigerians.”

Obasa further advised the president to form a government of national unity that will comprise of representatives from different political parties.

  • ‘Nigerians should pray for Buhari to succeed’

The President of the Apostolic Church of Nigeria (ACN), Pastor Gabriel Olutola has said President Muhammadu Buhari cannot solve myriad of Nigerian problems alone except Nigerians intercede on his behalf with fasting and prayers to God.

The cleric spoke during the 70th birthday celebration of the President of Christ Apostolic Church, (CAC), Worldwide, Pastor Abraham Akinosun in Bashorun, Ibadan.

Pastor Olutola said: “The only advice I have for Nigerians is to fervently to God for President Buhari to succeed as there is no other solution to myriad of Nigerian problems, saying because Nigerians have decided not to withdraw from their wickedness.”

He said until they turn away from vices such as favouritism, nepotism, corruption and other immoral acts, the country will continue to suffer from problems caused by these wicked acts, saying except this, there is little President Buhari can do.

He, therefore, congratulated the celebrator, saying he is a product of Christ and the birthday is to celebrate Christ; which made many people to  celebrate the man of God because of his many virtues.

Pastor Akinosun, however, thanked God for giving him the grace to celebrate the birthday, adding that many of his mates are dead but he was opportune to see the glorious day.

Reacting to the crisis rocking the church, the celebrator said the church today, unlike the time of Apostle Ayo Babalola and his co-founder, many people plant churches without reckoning with the centre. This is very dangerous.

He said they do not consider the importance of being under the authority of the church saying, “this is the reason we are tasking members to be heavenly-focused by doing away with perishable things of life to avoid further rancour in the church”.

On the effort by the church to bring back departed members, the President said: “We are trying our best but they are not after unity but position. Our faction, from all indications, maintain that we are the original CAC while they are members without names.

“We recently went to them to seek reconciliation but they insisted that out of three principal officers’ positions, they should be given two which we considered impossible.”

The CAC President, however, said they are still making efforts to persuade the departed members to come back even though the real institution is with them and standing better chances, adding that they want them back to become one body in Christ.

While performing the launch of a book written by Pastor Ade Alawode, the church’s Public Relations Officer in honour of the celebrator, entitled The Lifestyle of a Performer and Reformer, Pastor Edwin Etomi said the celebrator is a good mentor and a man of great honour.

Etomi, who represented the General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry (MFM), Pastor Daniel Olukoya added that he dedicated the book to the  General Overseer whose ministry is the offshoot of the CAC Worldwide.

  • Pray, schools told

    Pray, schools told

    Mr Oloniyo

Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of Peaklane Primary School, Alagbole, Lagos State, Mr Gboyega Oloniyo, has charged schools to instil virtues of honesty and prayer in their pupils to achieve a high success rate.

He said the institution was successful because of its emphasis on prayers by the students and management of the school.

Speaking to The Nation at the school’s Valedictory and prize-giving day for the nursery school and primary six, Mr Oloniyo said: “There is value for money in Peaklane. Here, we have a total school where they give them total education. Not just being built for the present but for the future. They pray a lot in this school. If you see these children praying, you would think they are in a prayer cantonment and that is the essence of what the lord is doing in their lives, which is why this day is a success. This is a school that builds them to fear the lord.”

Dancing to music from a live band with other parents and well-wishers, Oloniyo expressed his excitement over his son, Oluwademilade Oloniyoset’s graduation.

He charged the pupils to: “Be honest in life.

“Honesty is a very expensive thing and you do not expect it from a cheap person. The children we are building in this school are responsible and it is expected of them to go out and manifest such and be the change agents that Nigeria is really waiting for. Of course, honesty comes with a cost so they should be ready to pay the price.”

The school’s Director, Mrs Ify Nwachukwu, was in high spirits, about passing out her “rising stars and releasing them into the next level.”

She said: : “Always take responsibility for creating the future of your dreams, the future that we can all be proud of. As you move to the next phase, be diligent in your studies, be disciplined, obey your parents and always listen to wise, godly counsel. Your foundation would surely be tested so make up your mind to stand firm. Don’t allow yourselves to be influenced negatively, rather, be agents of change.”

The ceremony featured dance presentations, farewell messages, award presentations and an exhortation by Rev Samuel Wright, who told parents about their increasing responsibilities in the growth of the children.

In his message titled: “Arrows in the hand of God,” Wright said: “Parents, teach them in the way they should go. Teach them values of patience, endurance and good things, pray with them every day. Let them know that academic and financial excellence are not the most important things in life, but a relationship with God.”

  • Yero, El-Rufai pray for smooth transition

Outgoing Kaduna State Governor Mukhtar Yero and Governor-elect Nasir El-Rufai at the weekend prayed together as part of activities for the May 29 inauguration of the incoming government.

A statement in Kaduna by the governor-elect’s spokesperson Samuel Aruwan said other top government functionaries attended the prayer.

The statement said the Jum’at (Friday) prayer at the 44 Comilla Barracks Mosque in Kaduna was organised by Kaduna State Government Transition Committee.

El-Rufai said: “We are grateful to Almighty God for His kindness and benevolence. We pray for a successful transition in our state – for peace, development and harmony among our people.

“We are appealing to all citizens of Kaduna State to join us in prayers and work together for progress. We pray Allah to bless our state and uphold us as we strive to provide purposeful leadership for our state.”

Deputy Governor Nuhu Audu Bajoga and Deputy Governor-elect Bala Barnabas Bantex yesterday attended the ECWA Church at the Prisons Barracks in Kaduna for the Christian prayers.

The Chairman of the state branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop George Dodo, urged politicians to be God-fearing and focus on service delivery.

  • Cleric to Nigerians: this week is crucial, pray

Nigerians were told yesterday to pray for a successful transition this week.

Senior Superintendent Gabriel F. Akinadewo (Omo Jesu II) of Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW) declared this at a special service to herald a seven-day revival.

The event will hold at Restoration Parish of the church in Akute, Ogun State.

Delivering a special sermon entitled: ‘Without God, you are nothing’, Rev. Akinadewo said the crisis in the country today was caused by leaders behaving like the Biblical King Nebuchadnezzar.

“This week is crucial in the life of this nation. Nigerians must pray seriously. Psalm 62: 11 says power belongeth to God. But Nigerian leaders have ascribed to themselves omnipotent power, behaving like Nebuchadnezzar.

“Our leaders should remember what happened to Nebuchadnezzar. God punished him for years and only restored the kingdom to him after his repentance. For God to turn again the captivity of Nigeria, our leaders must repent and think of the oppressed”.

To him, Nigeria will only get to the Promised Land if leaders pray and seek God’s face.

“Our God is wiser than anybody. Psalm 41:1 says ‘Blessed is he that considereth the poor, the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble’. So, as long as our leaders don’t even think of millions of poor Nigerians, there is nothing the incoming Muhammadu Buhari administration can achieve. With the type of crude oil God gives us in this country, why should Nigerians be suffering? Today, people have money, no fuel to buy. A litre is being sold in some places for N500. Power generation has dropped. Airlines are cancelling flights because of lack of aviation fuel. The economy is going down completely. This is not Goodluck Jonathan’s problem now. It is a collective one. Leaders have sinned and the only way out is for everybody to repent.

“Many Nigerians refer to themselves as Christians and church leaders but they are worse than lucifer. They don’t even know what is in the Bible. You must not only hear the word of God but be a doer of the word. Reading the Bible is not enough to make us good Christians if we don’t practise and believe in what it says. That is the only way this country will be better.”

The week-long event will honour the Patriarch and Matriarch of the church, His Most Eminence, Archbishop Dr. Isaiah M. Akinadewo (Omo Jesu) and General Superintendent Apostolic Mother Mary A. Akinadewo.

  • Aregbesola: let’s pray for new beginning

Aregbesola: let’s pray for new beginning

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola yesterday said the Easter season offers Nigerians, especially Christians, a good opportunity to pray for the take-off of a new beginning that would usher in prosperity in all facets of national life.

He urged Osun people to embrace love, peace and make the necessary sacrifice towards the country’s development.

Aregbesola, in an Easter message by his Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, urged Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, to bring positive change to the nation.

He noted that what the country needed at this time were intercessory prayers to God to continuously stabilise it.

Aregbesola enjoined Christians and people of other faiths to supplicate to assist the in-coming administration on the critical areas of the country’s needs such as insecurity, hunger, unemployment, decayed infrastructure and corruption, which had all held the nation down.

He added: “Nigerians are tired of mere promises. They want concrete actions. They want to see in practical terms that government is committed to fighting insecurity and restoring the country to its past glory. This is what the APC government is committed to and so, Nigerians should pray successes in these areas.

“The season, therefore, offers us all the opportunity to pray for a proper take-off of that new beginning for our country to regain her lost glory.

“Events of the past few years, particularly the spate of insecurity in the land, leave much to be desired. I want to call on Christians and every Nigerian to pray for leaders of the nation, because Easter celebration should be used to renew love for one another.”

  • ‘We must pray for air safety’

The founding president of the African Foundation for Peace and Love Initiatives, Rev Titus Oyeyemi, has appealed to Nigerians to continue to pray for air safety.

Oyeyemi made the appeal at the 16th edition of the Nigerian Air Safety Prayer programme of the African Children of Peace Club at the Nigeria Airspace Management Authority and Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Headquarters, Murtala Mohammed, International Airport Ikeja, Lagos.

According to him, the place of regular prayer to God for airspace free of crashes cannot be over emphasised.

He said that airspace safety was not just up to operators but must be the priority of all Nigerians, who must keep praying for safety.

Oyeyemi said: “We need prayers to strengthen the world force, the unity, love and liberty in which members of the agencies are doing their work.

“The fellowship and unity of the agencies is what God is using to demonstrate its own power for miracles, for safety and protection,” he said.

Oyeyemi recalled that the prayer programme started as a response to rapid plane crashes between 2005 and 2007.

“We are teaching the children how to pray, how to show respect to elders, for their teachers and for one another as well as showing them how to become good citizens – we are cultivating new constituencies of youth peace and nation builders.”

The President of the NAMA Fellowship, Kayode Osho, lauded the efforts of the club in praying for air safety.

“The aviation industry all around the world is going through serious turbulent times and when such things happens, it affect the psyche of the flying public, thus praying for air safety in the global airspace is very germane,” he said.

  • ‘Pray for elections’ success’

    ‘Pray for elections’ success’

Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has urged Christian faithful to use the Lenten season to pray  for the restoration of peace, especially in the face of political and security tension.

He also advised Christians and Nigerians of other faiths to use the season to pray and work for the success of the elections.

The governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba, said the Lenten season called for sober reflection on individual attitudes and national challenges in order to engender a better society.

He added that “since the Lenten season in Christendom marks a period of sober reflection, fasting and penitence in anticipation of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, it is imperative that the season is also used for a deeper and sober reflection on the state of affairs in our country.”

He said that no state or nation could develop in a state of anarchy or violence, as resources and efforts directed towards containing violence and other forms of criminality could be properly channeled to the economic, industrial and infrastructural development of the country.

The  Speaker of the House of Assembly, Razak Atunwa, urged Christians to use the period of self denial and sacrifice to supplicate to God for a peaceful conduct of the  elections and stability of the nation.

He said the nation needed prayers and concerted efforts by stakeholders to restore stability.

The Speaker in a statement by his media aide, Abdulrahman Sanni, advised politicians to embark on issue-based campaigns.
