  • Orji urges Christians to pray for nation

Abia State Governor Theodore Orji has advised Christians to pray for the nation’s peace and unity.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Ugochukwu Emezue, the governor noted that Christians need to use the resurrection of Jesus Christ for prayer to end bombings in parts of the country.

He said human and material resources have been destroyed in such violent acts.

Orji said one of the solutions to the nation’s security challenges is prayer so that God would make those who are bent on destroying life and property to have a change of heart.

The governor said there is no problem that prayers cannot solve.

He urged the residents to show love to the less-privileged during the festive season, adding that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Orji reassured Abia residents, including non-indigenes, that his administration would ensure their security because security agencies have been placed on the red alert to ensure that law and order are enforced during the Easter celebration.

Also, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in the last election, Chief Reagan Ufomba, urged those in authority to remember the less privileged during the Easter period.

The politician said such public office holders need to reflect on the virtues for which Christ died on the cross, for the celebration to be meaningful.

He appealed to Abia residents to pray for God’s intervention in the affairs of Nigeria and the state to extinguish negative forces that hinder progress.

According to him, such negative forces include avarice, maladministration and unwarranted waste of life and property by religious fanatics.

Ufomba said: “Just as Christ remained committed to his mandate, people in authority must see it as their duty and a sacred opportunity to serve through exemplary conduct and not for selfish acquisition of wealth, power and pursuit of policies that affect negatively on the citizens, which in turn increase suffering and poverty.”

The politician urged those in authority to make Easter a time to make amends and assist the less-privileged with gifts as well as create the environment for improved socio-economic, political and spiritual development.

  • ‘Let’s pray for the world’

    ‘Let’s pray for the world’

You all know that the duty of the Conclave was to give a bishop to Rome. It seems that my brother Cardinals have come almost to the ends of the earth to get him… but here we are. I thank you for the welcome that has come from the diocesan community of Rome.
First of all I would say a prayer for our Bishop Emeritus Benedict XVI. Let us all pray together for him, that the Lord bless him and Our Lady protect him.
    Our Father… Hail Mary…
    Glory to the Father…
And now let us begin this journey, the Bishop and people, this journey of the Church of Rome which presides in charity over all the Churches, a journey of brotherhood in love, of mutual trust. Let us always pray for one another. Let us pray for the whole world that there might be a great sense of brotherhood.
My hope is that this journey of the Church that we begin today, together with help of my Cardinal Vicar, be fruitful for the Evangelization of this beautiful city.
And now I would like to give the blessing, but first I want to ask you a favour. Before the bishop blesses the people I ask that you would pray to the Lord to bless me – the prayer of the people for their Bishop. Let us say this prayer – your prayer for me – in silence.
I will now give my blessing to you and to the whole world, to all men and women of good will.
Brothers and sisters, I am leaving you. Thank you for your welcome. Pray for me and I will be with you again soon.
We will see one another soon.
Tomorrow I want to go to pray the Madonna, that she may protect Rome.
    Good night and sleep well

  • Pray, who is afraid of Kalu’s return?

Pray, who is afraid of Kalu’s return?

First, it was a band of politicians who claimed to be from former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu’’s Igbere community lamenting his then planned return to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Not long afterwards, the state chairman of the party, Chief Emma Nwaka, came out and rejected Kalu’s claims, insisting that the former governor had not been readmitted into the PDP in the state.

Then the leadership of the party in his Local Government Area that protested his eventual return. And just yesterday, the zonal leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-East joined the fray and kicked against his reported readmission into the party.

The National Vice-Chairman of PDP, Col Austin Akobundu (rtd), even said Kalu is unknown to the zone as a member of the party. He did not mince words in saying the ex-Governor is not welcomed in the PDP.

While the controversy rage, with the man in the middle of the storm, Kalu insisting on his return to his former party, observers are left to worry over the reasons why Akobundu and others may be bent on keeping Kalu out of the PDP.

Or is it that some people are actually afraid of his return as he claimed in a recent interview? If this is the case, then the question to ask would be ‘who is afraid of Kalu’s return?

  • Let us pray

As we commence a new year today in line with Gregorian calendar, it would be necessary as a country and a people to seek the face of God who led us through year 2012 successfully for another success in year 2013. After going through the events of 2012 I feel compelled to offer the following prayer for our dear country Nigeria and I invite you to join me.

    Let us pray.

Almighty God, we thank thee for seeing us through the year 2012 successfully. Though not all that started the year twelve months ago are here today to witness the beginning of year 2013, it is not by our good deeds that those of us still alive today are here but by your grace, and those that have passed on can not be said to have offended you. It is Thy will that they come back home when they did and we should remain behind to complete our term. As we are enjoined to say always; let Thy will be done.

Oh Lord, it is universally agreed that apart from corruption, bad leadership has been a major problem of this country, we know it but unfortunately we’ve been unable to correct that problem.

After several decades of failed leadership we had the opportunity to turn a new leaf in 1999 with a new democratic dispensation and indeed we thought we have turned the page when retired General Olusegun Obasanjo, a one time military Head of State was elected president and commander-in-chief., but alas we ended up with 8 wasted years of that presidency.

God you know the story. Obasanjo not only wasted that golden opportunity but inflicted further pains on us when, having failed to illegally extend his tenure, he forced a reluctant president on us as a successor in the person of late Umar Yar’Adua. God, the jury is still out on Yar’Adua’s tenure but certainly not a few Nigerians will declare his tenure a failure.

When you decided to take Yar’Adua away, Obasanjo again manipulated the system and forced another colourless and reluctant leader on us in the person of President Goodluck Jonathan. Even though he still has two years to end his tenure the jury has already returned a verdict of failure on him.

Oh God our Lord, even though we have no authority to question you we want to humbly ask why you have allowed those who never had the intention of ruling Nigeria become president or Prime Minister of this country, while those who genuinely aspired did not get there. From Tafawa Balewa to Jonathan, with the exception of the Babangida and Abacha interregnum, all the leaders got there either by accident or reluctantly. Babangida and Abacha wanted to rule Nigeria and they got there, but what did they make of that opportunity.

God, power belongs to you and you only can give power and anoint leaders. We cannot question your judgment, but as we begin the countdown to the 2015 election we pray that you give us leaders at each tier of government, who are genuinely interested in serving us and not just ruling us, leaders with compassion who will feel what we feel not those who because they have power supply 24/7 in the government villas across the country forget that majority of us are still living in darkness or on “I better pass my neighbour” power generator. Not leaders who will fly their children and spouses to specialist hospitals in Germany even for common cold leaving the rest of us to attend the glorified clinics that we call hospitals here. Not those whose children and relations will attend elite schools in Europe, America, Asia and even in nearby Ghana while watching our educational system nose dive. Not those who because they can fly around in state funded executive jets forget that our roads are bad; not those who because they cruise around in fleets of government fueled limousines would want the rest of us to go around on bicycles or pay through our nose for a litre of fuel.

God, the sins of our leaders are many but even in these closing stages of their tenure preparatory to the 2015 elections, we pray that you touch their hearts to turn away from their evil and wicked ways and serve the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians. Beginning from today our Lord, we pray that our leaders will rule with the fear of God and respect for us the people.

While not blaming our leaders entirely for the woes that have befallen our country, we equally recognize the ignoble role some of us followers have been playing in bringing the nation on to her knees. Just as we pray for guidance for our leaders we also pray for committed and sincere followers who will not sell their conscience or birthright for a mere pot of porridge.

God we agree that not all our leaders are that bad, there are rays of hope of better leadership tomorrow within the ranks of our present State governors, and to a little extent members of the National Assembly. We are still waiting for those in the State assemblies and local governments to show their true colour.

But of recent God there has been a disturbing trend within the ranks of our governors that is giving cause for concern. In the course of the year 2012 the ranks of our state governors have been visited by tragedy leading to death in at least one instance and on two occasions, close to death. Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State was flying a small aircraft from his home town in Taraba State to Yola airport in nearby Adamawa State when the aircraft crashed as he was approaching the airport. All on board were badly injured and Governor Suntai almost lost his life.

Almighty God as you know, our health facilities are nothing to write home about, not even our best hospital; the National Hospital in Abuja could handle the treatment of Suntai and the others on board that aircraft; they had to be flown to Germany for treatment. As at the time of this prayer, we are not sure whether they would survive but we pray that through your mercies they will survive and come back home to their loved ones in good health. Our First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan recently returned from a medical treatment in a German hospital, we don’t even know what was wrong with her.

God in this New Year please direct our leaders to establish that kind of German hospital that is good enough to treat our First Lady in at least each of the six geopolitical zones in the country, for the rest of us to also enjoy good healthcare.

God as the year 2012 was drawing to a close you decided to recall back home Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State. He died in a military helicopter conveying him, former National Security Adviser Gen. Owoye Azazi and three others including the crew to Port Harcourt airport from Bayelsa when it crashed into the creeks killing all on board. God this is one air accident too many. We are yet to fully recover from the tragic air crash involving DANA Air in Lagos. We recall similar ones in the past involving some of our domestic airliners. If this was due to our sins please God forgive us and prevent such tragedies from befalling us this year and in years to come.

Just as we are about drying the last drop of tears in our eyes as a result of the death of Governor Yakowa and co, Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State was involved in a fatal road accident that claimed the life of his ADC but left him badly injured. On top of all these accidents and death are wicked rumors flying around announcing the death of no fewer than three other State Governors. God what is happening to our governors? Please deliver them from all evils.

The accident involving Governor Wada has once again highlighted the carnage that daily takes place on our roads, especially highways. God, in our country today, as you know, road accident has taken more lives than any known disease due in part to poor conditions of the roads and the reckless suicidal driving culture in this country. .God please in this New Year direct our leaders to fix our roads for us even if they won’t build new ones and touch the hearts of our drivers.

Lord our prayers are by no means limited to these, but the space here is too small to accommodate them all, but you know what is in our hearts, please grant us those ones that will make us a better people and a better nation. In your mighty name we pray.

    Amen.

  • North’s governors to Nigerians: pray for Suntai’s recovery

The Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) has urged Nigerians to pray for Taraba State Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai to recover from the injury he sustained in last Thursday’s plane crash at a farm near Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

The governor is receiving treatment in a German hospital.

The Chairman of the forum and Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu noted that prayers are essential for Suntai to recover and fulfill his vision of a greater Taraba State.

In a statement in Minna, the state capital, by his Chief Press Secretary, Mallam Danladi Ndayebo, the governor said Suntai has shown the goodwill and fatherly disposition to the people and the government he leads.

Aliyu said prayers can sustain the injured governor and enable him to return to do more for his fatherland.

He said: “Governor Suntai means well for Taraba State and has demonstrated this in words and in actions. It is, therefore, for this reason that we seek fervent prayers for his quick recovery to enable him fulfill his vision of a great Taraba State.”

Hailing the medical team that treated the governor before he was flown to Germany, the forum chairman particularly praised the management and workers of the Federal Medical Centre in Yola and those of the National Hospital, Abuja.

Aliyu hailed them for stabilising Suntai and his aides before they were flown abroad.

The statement wished the injured governor and other victims of the crash quick recovery.

  • NFF to Nigerians: Pray for Flamingoes

The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) has tasked Nigerians to put the Women’s U-17 team in their prayers as they prepare for tougher matches at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Azerbaijan.

Speaking against the backdrop of their 11-0 white wash and record equalling defeat of hosts, Azerbaijan, the NFF’s Director of Competitions, Dr Mohammed Sanusi said the ladies have made their compatriots happy with their displays against their hapless European nation but urged against lowering their guard against Colombia owing to the feat achieved in their first two matches.

Dr Sanusi noted that with Nigerians’ support through their prayers, the Flamingoes would be more clinical in front of goals and would not be hitting the cross bar or the woodwork as witnessed in their first match where loads of chances were frittered away.

“The Flamingoes have raised the flag of Nigeria very well and are a more improved side to the one that played Canada in the first match. We are proud of them and are sure they will be in the final by the grace of God.

“What we want from Nigerians is their prayers. We lost many scoring chances in the match against Canada and those chances are as good as goals under ideal settings.

“This is because when you play the ball and it hit the bar is as good as the one that has gone in. It is here we beckon on Nigerians for their prayers to ask for God’s favour so that they can be more clinical and fortunate in front of goal as they march toward the final,” Sanusi appeals to Nigerians.

With the 11-0 victory over Azerbaijan Flamingoes are top of Group A with 4 points and a massive +11 goals difference ahead of Canada who are on +1 goal difference.

Colombia (3 points) and Azerbaijan(none) are 3rd and 4th respectively.

Flamingoes wide margin win also equalled the record of the most goals scored in a FIFA U-17 match set few days earlier in the match between North Korea and Gambia which ended 11-0 also in favour of the Asian giants.

The Nigerians have their last group match against Colombia on Saturday in Baku.
