FIFA PRESIDENCY: NFF tells Odegbami to face reality

The Nigeria Football Federation has chastised former Nigerian international player Olusegun Odegbami to stop his campaign of calumny against the NFF and prominent Nigerian football figures and face up to the reality that he undid him own campaign for a slot at the FIFA Presidency.

Former Green Eagles’ captain Odegbami failed to secure the statutory five nominations needed to put him on the ballot for next year’s FIFA Presidential election, and has been relentless in throwing salvos against the NFF and prominent figures like Dr. Amos Adamu and Chief Orji Uzor Kalu.

“We are thoroughly disappointed at the conduct of Chief Odegbami since his failed bid,” Hon. Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande, Chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee, stated. “He was his own big problem, with the letter he wrote castigating the leadership of FIFA and CAF, which he brazenly copied to these eminent figures.

“We consider Chief Odegbami an elder statesman in Nigeria football, but he has been throwing a lot of tantrums lately. He has been accusing very prominent and illustrious persons of so many things, and pretending to be a saint.”

Yahaya-Kwande, also a ranking member of the House of Representatives, said the onus was on Odegbami to secure his five nominations outside NFF’s endorsement.

“The NFF is aware that Odegbami reached out to the Football Associations of Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic and Zambia. How is his failure the fault of the NFF? They told him to his face that they were opposed to him because of his statements against the President of CAF, who is now Acting FIFA President.

“He said the NFF wasted time in endorsing him. As far back as September 8, we set out conditions for himself and Chief Orji Kalu to meet before we could endorse either of them. We always emphasized extensive consultations by the aspirants. It is outrightly mischievous for him to give the impression that the NFF was his problem. The NFF President was in Cairo, Egypt to campaign for him for the five nominations, but where was Odegbami himself on the day that mattered?

“Let it be said that Nigeria was the only country where more than one person showed interest in the race. Odegbami was a great football player and brought honour to Nigeria, but Chief Kalu also brought honour to Nigeria through extensive support for Enyimba to win top laurels. It is also true that Kalu announced his interest before Odegbami did.”

Yahaya-Kwande emphasized that none of the candidates who eventually got on the ballot relied solely on their National Association to get the five nominations for them.

“Odegbami has this strange idea that everyone else is tainted and he is not! He worked against himself. It is not NFF’s problem; it is his problem, entirely.”

Presidency to PDP: Buhari won’t lie to Nigerians

The Presidency on Sunday maintained that President Muhammadu Buhari will always tell Nigerians the truth about any situation.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, was reacting to a recent statement credited to People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) spokesman, Olisa Metuh.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to the latest statement by the PDP spokesman, Olisa Metuh alleging that President Muhammadu Buhari is “demarketing Nigeria”.

“We restate for the umpteenth time to Mr. Metuh and his ilk that their attempts to distract President Buhari from the job he has been elected to do will fail.

“President Buhari will remain true to the virtues of honesty, integrity, sincerity; incorruptibility and plain-speaking which endeared him to Nigerians and made them prefer his leadership to that of a lying and deceptive PDP administration.

“The President will not, in the guise of “marketing” the country, refrain from telling Nigerians and the world, the emerging truths about the abject state in which years of plundering by a PDP leadership has left the Nigerian treasury and economy.

“President Buhari will not in the name of “marketing” or “attracting” investors, follow in the footsteps of the ousted PDP Administration and its discredited officials who shamelessly lied to Nigerians and the world about the buoyancy and vibrancy of an economy they had bled dry for personal gain, when it was very obvious to the discerning, that the Nigerian economy was headed for serious trouble,” Adesina stated.

The Presidency also said that it was most unfortunate that instead of showing some remorsefulness for the harm done to the nation by his party, and giving genuine support for President Buhari’s efforts to salvage and revamp the national economy, Mr. Metuh has persisted in a vain attempt to remain relevant on the national stage by unjustly denigrating the President who continued to strive with all his might to alleviate and reverse the harm done to the nation by PDP misrule and corruption.

“President Buhari cannot be distracted by a broken record. If the PDP spokesman ever has serious matters to bring to our attention, we will be prepared to listen, ” It stated

  • No rift with Tinubu, says Buhari

No rift with Tinubu, says Buhari

The presidency last night said a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is not under watch by any security agency.

It dismissed any reports of strained relationship between President Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu.

It said it was unaware of any plot against Buhari by Tinubu.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, who made the clarifications in a statement in Abuja, said such insinuations by a newspaper were products of perverted logic.

The government warned Nigerians against falling victims of such mischief.

Shehu said: “The attention of the presidency has been drawn to a false and sensational story by a leading newspaper to the effect that a pillar of the governing party, the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is “under security watch over alleged plot against Buhari.”

“Nigerians are hereby advised to ignore this story because it is false and baseless.

We wish to confirm without any equivocation that the Asiwaju is not of any particular interest to any arm of the security services.

“The relationship between him and the president cannot be better than it is at the moment.

“According to the perverted logic of the newspaper, the respected leader of the APC is into a plot against the leader of the country. The presidency is unaware of any such plots against the President.”

Shehu explained that heads of security agencies in the country confirmed that they were unaware of Tinubu being under surveillance.

Shehu added: “I got on the phone a short while ago with General Babagana Munguno, (rtd), the National Security Adviser and the Director-General of the SSS, Lawal Daura who both dismissed the published reports as acts of pure mischief. They are not aware of the Asiwaju being on any kind of watch.

“It would appear that a competition is on between two or three newspaper establishments on how best to breach the excellent relationship between the pillars of our party and government.

“So far, they have not made a headway and there is no indication that they will succeed in the future.

“It suffices to say that such reports, written without fairness and balance can only take away from whatever is left of the credibility of these newspapers. The general public is hereby advised to ignore them on these reports.”

  • Ministers: Nothing wrong with recycling ex-office holders- Adesina

Ministers: Nothing wrong with recycling ex-office holders- Adesina

Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, was guest on Kakaaki, a program of Africa Independent Television (AIT) on Thursday, October 1.

Here are excerpts from the interview:

First of all, let’s look at the President’s October 1 broadcast. What do you make of it?

We must recognise that it is a National Day broadcast, and he started by reviewing the state of the polity, particularly our march towards nationhood 55 years after independence. Are we a nation yet? Are we just a conglomeration of ethnic nationalities? I think on a day like this, that is the most important thing, all the others are ancillary, though important. It was an efficient broadcast, it may be short but it touched a number of crucial issues.

One issue that has been generating lots of reactions is the ministerial list. The President did promise sometime in July that he was going to name his ministers in September. But what we saw was a submission of ministerial list to the National Assembly.

We also need to mind the process and the procedure; Our federal lawmakers would be the first people to kick if the President just reeled out the names of the ministers and their portfolios. That would not be in order. What he does is to nominate and send to the Senate and after clearance, the ministers begin to work. At any given time, procedure must be followed.

Part of the broadcast that a lot of people would have loved to hear more from the President is the issue of national unity and inclusiveness in running the affairs of state. It appears that the President did not dwell on that and a lot of people looking at Nigeria believe that national unity and inclusiveness appear to be quite elusive. One would have expected the President to reassure the country that Nigeria stays as one and this is what I am going to do so that everyone has a sense of belonging.

Well, let me read this paragraph if you will permit, the President says here, “We have all the attributes of a great nation, we are not there yet because the one commodity we have been unable to exploit to the fullness is the unity of purpose .This would have enabled us to achieve not only more orderly political evolution and integration, but also, continuity and economic progress. Countries far less endowed have made greater coherence and unity of purpose.” So, he touched on what you said.

Yes, he touched on it, but what I mean is that he should have dwelled on it, talking about Nigeria at 55.

You should also realize that he is President, and he should not be dwelling on just challenges, rather he should be working to achieve solutions , which is quite better.

There are some agitations that the President seems to favour some parts of the country, so the eagerness to see who and who will make the ministerial list…

He also said that order is better than speed. What Nigerians want in these appointments appears to be speed, so that they can calculate how many are from the North, South, East and West, and all that. But we will get there, that is what the President is saying.

The President wants to manage the country’s resources and he didn’t make any statement about the economy or the real sector, why is this so?

I think we are forgetting that it is a National Day broadcast. It is about Nigeria, our people, the way we have lived together. What are the challenges and how are the challenges being surmounted? All those other things cannot necessarily come into a National Day broadcast, that is what I feel.

How long shall Nigerians wait for the President to say something on the economic direction?

The economic direction is not an opinion of one man but an aggregation of what a team feels and what they have agreed upon. That team is unfolding, we have a list of proposed ministers, that list has not been unfolded and when they are approved with their portfolios , they are the ones that will articulate the economic direction. What if the President as one man has said ,this is the direction and the team comes and feels different?

Not as one man, because he has said that he has been in consultation with the Vice President and some other individual concerning solutions to our problems . Based on that statement, Nigerians are expecting that …

That would still not amount to an economic direction.

Let us talk about some things. It was reported that the President says that his relationship with the Senate president would depend on the outcome of the Code of Conduct trial. Could you confirm that ?

I was at a session in New York when the President was granting that interview to Sahara TV and he said the relationship between them is cordial. The interviewer asked if they communicate and he said , yes, many times. There were some appointments that he couldn’t have made without writing the Senate president. He was further asked what would be the relationship in the light of the code of conduct tribunal trial that is going on, and he said, “Yes, I have to wait for that process to end and that would determine the relationship,” which I think is just right.

Okay, I think that you need to break it down further, when he said that he needs to wait for the process before the relationship becomes cordial. Does it mean, it is not cordial right now?

There is separation of powers between the executive and legislature…

The President and Senate president are from the same party and they need to have a very cordial working relationship for the President to succeed.

Is there an indication that the relationship is not cordial?

From the statement of the President that he is awaiting the outcome of the trial, it has pitched him on a particular level… it seems the President is saying that the Senate president should not come close to me pending when the trial is over, to know whether you are clean enough or not.

What the President meant was that he was not going to interfere in any way and the process must play out. He was emphatic about that and of course if the process finishes, whichever way it goes, it determines the relationship between the two individuals. For a government that pays high premium on transparency and accountability, it is very important that whoever is in a top decision must be seen to be accountable to the people.

One would also ask if the President is conscious of the assumption of innocence until proven guilty.

In all he has said, there is nowhere that assumption has been breached, No way and nowhere that it has been breached. He says that the Senate president is innocent for now and when the process ends, they continue the relationship.

Okay now, let’s look at the ministerial list that was sent (September 30). We understand from what is in the news that just a few names were sent to the Senate, can you confirm this? And when would the rest be sent?

The President himself was clear about that, he said the first batch but nobody knows how many is in the batch

I am sure that you know…

(laughs) … No…No…, you know, you are a news person and you can’t depend on everything you hear. It has been addressed to the Senate president. The list is there, he will unfold it officially. Nobody can say precisely how many. You said a few; you can’t be sure because the Senate president has not unfolded it.

How many people are in the batch?

A: Well, it depends on the President. There are certain prerogatives that the President has. Ministers are one of them. He has said that this is the first batch, I think that we should wait and see who are those in the first batch and after that we know how many remains, because the constitution already states that there must be a minister in each of the states. We have 36 states in the country, so when the list is unfolded, we know how many remains.

You have just returned from the United Nations General Assembly in New York, we heard that a lot of things happened there, like missing meetings that the President was supposed to attend.

Now, let me talk about the supposedly missed meeting. The truth is that, you don’t miss meetings that you are not scheduled to attend, That is just the truth. If you are not scheduled for a meeting, can you miss it? No.

Was Nigeria not scheduled for the meeting?

No, Nigeria was not scheduled to be at that meeting. That is the truth.

O’Brien of the UN was reported as saying that he was quite disappointed that Nigeria was not at that meeting.

A: We have a Permanent representative at the UN, Prof. Joy Ogwu. The invitations Nigeria received are seven pages in all. I have them. You won’t see that meeting in any of the invitations that we got. Nigeria was not invited to that meeting and not scheduled to be there. With the passion that our President has on the Boko Haram, do you think that he will receive an invitation to a meeting that will discuss that issue and he will not be there? The truth is that Nigeria was not invited. We have said it and even the President has said in an interview before leaving New York and I guess that should rest the matter. What is happening, as far as I am concerned is storm in a teacup. A lot of people just want to find faults unnecessarily. Nigeria was not invited to that meeting, if she had been invited , she would have been there.

Secondly, it was a meeting on Boko Haram and insurgency. There were two high levels meetings within the General Assembly days and Nigeria was at those meetings. It simply shows that she was not invited to the earlier one. Let me make this statement: it’s like Nigerians have been lied to so much that they find it difficult to now believe the truth. And the truth is that Nigeria was not invited to that meeting.

Even if the President was not invited, was the Nigerian delegation aware of that meeting?

A: How could the Nigerian delegation be aware, when it was not scheduled? I have told you that every meeting that Nigeria was scheduled to attend, I have the list here and that meeting was not there. Nigeria was not scheduled for the meeting.

What would have informed the President’s desire to want to become the Minister of Petroleum, when he is talking about reforming the NNPC, making it transparent? Does he not trust anyone or believe that there are capable people who can be trusted to manage this ministry properly?

I think the question, we will ask ourselves is: What would the President be bringing to the table, if he is going to supervise the petroleum ministry? He has been Minister of Petroleum about 32 years ago. That is a lot of experience. Those were years that things were done fairly properly in this country.

A lot of people will say that things have changed over the years and lots of structures have also changed and those days may have gone….

But there are things that never change in life. These include integrity, transparency, truth and responsibility. Those things never change and those are the things the President would bring to bear.

In the newspaper review this morning, it was reported that 21 names made the ministerial list. Now, based on the constitution, a minister must be selected from every state. So, if the President wants to supervise the ministry of petroleum resources, how will this work out eventually? Does this mean that a particular state will have two slots?

The constitutional requirement you quoted talks about the minimum , it states that there must be 36 number of ministers, at least one from each state. We have lived in this country where we had 46, 48 ministers and all that. That already shows you that 36 is the minimum requirement but this administration is one that wants to cut cost. We don’t expect that it would have a ballooned number of ministers.

What would you say to Nigerians out there, who think that perhaps if some institutions are working, talking of EFCC, ICPC and some other regulatory and enforcement agencies, we won’t be talking about recycling of ministers or minister of petroleum in the person of President Muhammadu Buhari.

What is wrong with recycling if that person has something he is bringing to the table? Recycling would be wrong if that person is adding no value. But if he is adding value, what is wrong with recycling? I tell you that this is one appointment, if you can call it so, that will bring a lot of value to that ministry.

You said earlier that the President is bringing in honour, integrity, truth all those virtues into the ministry’s package. And the President has taken over three months to appoint ministers. I wonder, has he not found a Nigerian with all these qualities to run that office? We have seen in this country, where a former president oversaw this sector and there was not much difference.

Don’t forget that the buck stops at the President’s table. At the end of his administration, it is going to be called the Buhari administration and not the name of any minister. Therefore, it is very important that what the President feels would make a difference in the country is what he does. At the end of the day, that administration would be rated with his name and not any other name.

The last words from you Mr. Adesina before you go

Well, I will just like to say that Nigerians trusted this President, they elected him into office, let them continue to maintain that trust, and at the end of the day, they will not be disappointed.

Presidency: Leave Buhari out of Saraki’s trial

The Presidency on Sunday declared that attempts to link the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki to the Presidency are unacceptable.

It also said that those claiming that the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) were acting on external instigation were uninformed.

A statement by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President said that there is no place in law that the Bureau and the tribunal should take instructions from any quarters.

As an independent institution equal to any superior court of record, he pointed out that the tribunal is set up by the constitution to determine the issue of default, false declaration or forgery in assets declaration.

The statement reads: “This therefore is purely a judicial process and has nothing to do with the presidency.

“If anyone has an axe to grind with what they are doing, they should do it in a judicial manner by challenging those actions in a proper court of law.
“Let them hire a good team of lawyers to prove their innocence. Government has no desire to persecute anybody,” he added.

He said that the President has vowed to respect the rule of law and is doing that by staying out of the matter.

According to Shehu, the President has said times without number that the war against corruption has no sacred cows.

“Even if the President wants to help, there is no way he can do anything. Is he going to ask the judge to stop the trial?

“It is purely a judicial process, the type of which are routinely dealt with by the CCB and the CCT. There are many cases like this that are going on.

“The President has sworn to an oath to protect the constitution and will not violate that oath,” he stated.

Ministries, agencies to compile lists of unpaid employees

Labour leaders and workers are excited over a presidential directive that all arrears of salaries and allowances must  be paid.

The Presidency on Monday directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to compile the names of all public service employees who are being owed arrears of salaries and allowances within seven days so that they can be paid without further delay.

The September 14 circular came from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF). It immediately sent members of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) jumping for joy.

The names of those being owed are to be compiled within seven days for them to be paid “immediately”.

ASCSN Secretary-General Comrade Alade Bashir Lawal, who broke the news in a statement released in Abuja yesterday, praised President Muhammadu Buhari for bringing hope to thousands of public service employees who are being owed arrears of salaries and allowances for years.

The Presidency identified the outstanding benefits as: salary arrears, promotion arrears, 1st 28 days allowance on transfer from post, repatriation allowance, burial expenses, death benefits and mandatory training of  OHCSF in 2010.

[ad id=”403656″]The Presidency directed the MDAs to ensure that each unpaid entitlement is accurate, verifiable, with the name, designation, status (serving or retired) and amount due to each officer.

“The correct information should reach the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation on or before Monday September 21, 2015,” the circular stressed.

Lawal recalled that in letters written to the  President since his election and assumption of office, the union reminded him of the outstanding salaries and allowances and stressed the need for the government to pay up to boost the morale not only of the affected officers but also that of other teeming public service employees.

He expressed confidence that as soon as the lists are submitted to the Presidency, the lingering arrears of salaries and allowances would be paid “so as to put the ugly situation behind and move forward”.

The union warned of dire consequences, which may include trade union actions, if the MDAs played politics with the Presidential directive.

He appealed to Nigerians to ignore  the rumour and focus on issues that unite the country.

In his sermon, titled: ‘Securing the glorious destiny of our posterity’,  Malomo explained that Nigeria had a glorious destiny that was unique.

The first bible reading was taken from 2 Samuel 3:1-3 while the second bible reading was from Job 1:1-5 and Psalm 139; verses 14 and 15.

Don’t distract us with frivolous allegations, Presidency tells PDP

The Presidency yesterday  advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop distracting President Muhammadu Buhari with frivolous and unfounded allegations of selectively waging war against corruption.

Reacting to a PDP allegation by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said that contrary to the PDP allegations, President Buhari has not and would not shield any All Progressives Congress (APC) government official from facing prosecution for corruption.

The Presidential Spokesman explained that since President Buhari came into office, he has never told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) not to touch any APC Governor because they belong to the same party.

Malam Garba Shehu said it was convenient for the PDP to remember the cases of Sule Lamido while it pretended not to notice the fact that former Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, who is an APC member, was also arrested and arraigned at the same time.

The Senior Special Assistant challenged Mr. Metuh to produce any evidence or instance when President Buhari interfered in the activities of the EFCC by telling them who to prosecute and who to shield from prosecution.

He also condemned as malicious and unfounded the allegation by Metuh that funds from the Excess Crude Account are being depleted by the Buhari administration to allegedly pay back APC Governors that contributed to his presidential campaign.

Malam Garba Shehu advised Metuh to either come forward with evidence, or apologize to Nigerians for willfully propagating falsehoods in order to gain cheap publicity or public sympathy.

The Media aide said that it was the responsibility of the former PDP administration to prosecute APC and PDP Governors whose alleged cases of corruption were brought to its attention.

He said that if the unseated PDP administration had these facts against APC governors, it was within its powers to prosecute them.

The Presidency also advised the PDP to stop crossing its bridges before it came to them only to intimidate the current administration from going ahead with its resolve to fight corruption at all levels.

On the allegation that the Buhari administration was secretly planning to award oil refining licences to its cronies, the Presidency describes the accusation as absurd and ridiculous, stressing that adherence to transparency and due process would always be President Buhari’s philosophy on doing things.

The Presidential statement reiterated that the Buhari administration is passionately committed to fighting corruption in all its ramifications, and that no amount of blackmail, distraction and false allegation would deflect him from this course in line with his campaign promises

Don’t brag about fake economic achievements -Presidency tells PDP

The presidency at the weekend advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop playing down President Buhari’s achievements in his first 100 days in office.
It said PDP should rather bury its head in shame for subjecting Nigeria to the worst economic plunder through corruption in the recent history.
Reacting to the PDP statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, that the economy is going down under the APC administration, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said that the economy of Nigeria was gasping for breath under the egregiously corrupt PDP administration.
Under the administration, he said that the country was witnessing an acceleration of poverty which made Nigerians to unite for change in the last Presidential election.
Shehu noted that the excruciating hardships experienced by Nigerians under the PDP misrule was unprecedented.
The Presidential aide also pointed out that it was ridiculous for any sane government to artificially rebase the economy and claim to transform Nigeria into the largest economy in Africa as the PDP administration did.
He explained that the defeated former ruling party was artificially manipulating statistics to create the illusion of impressive economic performance record.
According to him, one falsehood built on another cannot stand, stressing that if the PDP’s claim of economic successes in terms of GDP, employment generation, poverty alleviation and others were genuine, Nigerians wouldn’t have voted the party out of power.
Malam Garba wondered which contented electorate would have voted a performing party out of office.
He noted that if the former ruling party was doing so well, the opposition parties would have found it difficult to defeat a popular ruling party.
Malam Shehu said that the PDP assumed performance was nothing more than window dressing, and a detachment from reality.
The Presidential spokesman said no economy can grow with corruption, an area in which he said the PDP administration demonstrated more competence.
The presidency also said criticism for its own sake is not the hallmark of credible opposition.
Nigerians, he said, no longer face exploitation at filling stations because the government is taking punitive measures against marketers that punish poor Nigerians.
He noted that queues have disappeared at the filling stations, adding that the naira is also enjoying favourable exchange rate.
Mallam Shehu said the Buhari administration has successfully blocked leakages and other avenues for corruption, practices which he said the previous PDP administration lacked the will or the desire to stop.
As a result of the measures to block leakages, he said the Buhari administration has frustrated the efforts by corrupt elements to divert public funds to private pockets.
He explained that once the formal trial for corruption begins formally, the PDP might no longer have the moral legs to stand on, let alone talk down on Nigerians with fake claims of economic miracles under its most incompetent and grossly purposeless and sleazy administration.
