  • ASUU tongue-lashes JAMB over 120-point mark for admission into varsities

ASUU tongue-lashes JAMB over 120-point mark for admission into varsities

Following the release of the minimum cut-off mark for 2017/2018 admission into tertiary institutions across the country, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday lashed out at the Federal Government describing the move as “a sad policy decision for the future of Nigeria.”

Reacting to the decision in an interview with newsmen in Ibadan, Chairman ASUU, University of Ibadan, Dr Deji Omole accused the President Muhammadu Buhari led FG of having a dream of destroying Nigeria education

It would be recalled that, JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede had in agreement with other stakeholders announced 120 and 100 as the minimum scores for admission into University and Polytechnic respectively.

He was quoted saying, “30 % of those in higher institutions do not take JAMB or have less than the cut-off marks. The admission process is now automated with direct involvement of the registrar of JAMB for final approval. We have agreed to regularize admissions that were done under the table this year. From next year we will not accept anything like that.”

Omole who accused the JAMB registrar of presiding over illegality, insisted that the decision on the cut-off mark is a sad policy decision for the future of Nigeria, particularly her education.

According to Omole, rather than sanctioning the identified universities who admitted over 17,000 students illegally, the JAMB registrar simply regularised illegality and lowered cut-off marks to favour the interests of the friends of government who owns private universities and are hell bent on destroying public education.

While reiterating the call for the scrapping of JAMB for out-living its useful existence, Omole said students should apply directly to universities of their choice for admission.

The ASUU boss who noted that to think of admitting into the tertiary education system in the country with 30percent score is to plant doomed future for Nigeria.

He said: “It is sad that the present administration’s dream was to destroy education in Nigeria.

“Where are those the JAMB registrar said entered universities illegally? which universities admitted them? If 30percent did not take JAMB and found their way into the university system is that not corruption and a message that JAMB is not significant anymore? What sanction did those who did the illegal thing receive other than regularization of illegality?

“We are watching because long before now we have said that JAMB has outlived its usefulness. Let the universities set their unique standards and those who are qualified can come in. 120/400 is 30percent. Even in those days 40percent was graded as Pass. But now JAMB said with F9 which is scoring 30percent you can be admitted. They deliberately want to destroy education.

“Even for polytechnic 100 marks is 25 percent. It is sad. And that is where we are in Nigeria. They want to destroy public education at all cost. This is not setting standard for education in Nigeria. It is purely lowering standards and digging grave for the future. This is why ASUU is currently on the struggle to influence the government to do the needful for education in Nigeria.”

Updated: Buhari signs anti-graft, other agreements

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday signed instruments of ratification for a number of bilateral agreements.

While one of the agreement signed was to strengthen the government’s anti-corruption battle, others covered Tax Administration and Intellectual Property Protection.

The Agreements ratified included Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Civil and Commercial Matters, Agreement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons and Extradition Treaty.

Other instruments of ratification are Charter for the Lake Chad Basin between Nigeria, Cameroun, Central African Republic, Libya, Niger and the Republic of Chad, African Tax Administration Forum Agreement on Mutual Assistance in Tax Matters, World Intellectual Property Organisation Performances and Phonograms Treaty, The World Intellectual Property Organization Treaty on Audio-Visual Performances and Marrakesh Treaty to facilitate access to published works for persons who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise.

The President said “I am delighted to perform today, the duty of executing Instruments of Ratification of certain Agreements on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, pursuant to the powers conferred on me by Section 5(1) (a) and (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and Article 7 of the Vienna Convention on the law of treaties of 1969.

Today’s ceremony marks a very important milestone in our demonstration of sovereign capacity to fulfill our international obligations and take important steps for the benefit of our economy, security and the anti-corruption war within and outside Nigeria.

The full implementation of the Agreements has however, been delayed due to the need by both sides to conclude their respective ratification processes.

“I am happy to note therefore, that pursuant to a Memorandum presented to the Federal Executive Council by the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Council has approved the ratification of the said Agreements, thus paving the way for today’s ceremony.

With this sovereign act, which has been replicated in the United Arab Emirates by their responsible authorities, we are now in a position to utilize these Agreements fully to foster cooperation between our respective authorities particularly for the purpose of prosecuting the anti-corruption campaign of this Government.” he said

The President added: “It is my hope that these Instruments which are signed today will reinvigorate the anti-corruption war and check the illicit flow of funds out of our country to other jurisdictions, improve national security, food security, boost our economic and tax regimes and improve the overall well-being of our creative community.

All agencies of Government with roles to play under the respective Treaties now ratified are hereby directed to ensure that they play their anticipated roles in an effective and responsible manner in order to ensure that we reap the full benefits of these Agreements.” he stated

Before the signing of the instructions, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami explained the agreements.

On Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, he said “This is between Nigeria and United Arab Emirate and it is to create a broad legal platform for cooperation between both countries in the administration of criminal law generally and other matter related to the investigation and prosecution of crimes and sharing of information and experience between authorities of notice countries.

“It is our expectation that this agreement will constitute a core component for our anti-corruption strategy given the prominence of the United Arab Emirates as an investment destination for many Nigerians some of whom have unfortunately seen that country as a haven to invest illicitly acquired wealth.”

For Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Civil and Commercial Matters, he said “This agreement created a platform for assistance between both countries in civil and commercial matters which will in essence assist to institutionalize support for the Nigerian business community through commercial and civil protection and thus engender massive growth on both sides.

“This agreement has a strong potential to promote and commerce between both countries by strengthening the legal framework for the settlement of legal dispute and execution of court judgement in civil and commercial matters.” he said

On the Agreement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, he said “This agreement will grant our country the privilege of bringing back sentences persons of Nigerian origin serving their terms in the United Arab Emirates to serve the same terms in Nigerian prisons and where applicable face investigations and prosecutions for the crimes inclusive of financial crimes that are committed in Nigeria before their apprehension in UAE.”

For the Extradition Treaty, he said “This agreement will create a legal platform for either country to make requests for the extradition of fugitives from justice found in each other’s territories. It will therefore give us the necessary legal basis to request the extradition of Nigeria who may have absconded to UAE after committing crimes in our country thus ensuring that they face appropriate investigation and prosecution.

“It is important to recall that the federal administration priotise the above four agreements with the UAE upon the assumption of this government in the line of strategic importance of UAE in relations to financial fraud from Nigeria.

“Recall, that Mr. President personally led a delegation to the UAE in January 2016 during which the said agreements were signed on the 18th of January 2016.

“Both counties agreed that there was a need because of the positive relations between them to encourage and boost each other’s’ commercial transactions in Nigeria and UAE through all legitimate channels.

“There is however concurrent imperative to discourage and mutually convert illicit financial dealings by criminal elements who are engaged in financial money laundering and other financial crimes.”

On the charter for the Lake Chad Basin between Nigeria, Cameroun, Central African Republic, Libya, Niger and the Republic of Chad, he said “This chatter is a political legal instrument for equitable water sharing, common investment and environmental management for the Lake Chad Basin.
Our decision to ratify the agreement is in recognition for the need for the responsible management of Lake Chad Basin area which has historically supported one of the world richest eco-system and provided employment for millions of people but is now being ravaged by the effect of climate change.

“A revitalized Lake Chad Basin will not only boost the security situation in the region but also demonstrate the commitment of the government in a sustainable development goals on the management arrangement of the environment.”

On African Tax Administration Forum Agreement on Mutual Assistance in Tax Matters, he said “This agreement is designed to contribute to the efficacy of tax administration and improve public accountability. This is consistent with the vision of this government to significantly diversify our revenue resources away from oil by aggressively expanding the taxation rate through various strategies.

“It will also boost continental cooperation with our sisters African countries and thus cultivate sources of tax revenues which were hitherto overlooked for greater mutual assistance in Nigeria and other countries.”

For World Intellectual Property Organisation Performances and Phonograms Treaty and the Marrakesh Treaty to facilitate access to published works for persons who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise, he said “These two treaties the instrument for ratifications of which are being executed today will in various dimensions protect the rights of Nigerian performers, actors, singers and others in the visual environment on the one hand and producers of kenetic abstract art and music or sound set in relation to each other on the other hand.

“The decision to engage in these agreements is a bold step in recognition and importance which the present administration accords to the protection of intellectual property in the Nigerian jurisdiction.

“It is intended to protect the works of creative industry including Nollywood which has expending components of our gross domestic products.

“Nigerian youths who have ventured into the creative sector can be rest assured that the federal government will continue to support their aspirations and protect their source of livelihood through the vigorous protection of their intellectual property rights as these instruments are intended to approve that protection.

“This ceremony today demonstrates the national resolve of this administration to continue to play our role as a responsible member of the international community.

“We shall continue explore all possible avenues for cooperation and collaborations with different segments of international community in a manner that promotes national interests and global peace. And this is exactly what this ceremony is intended to signify,” he stated.

Buhari has final say on SGF, NIA Boss probe, says Osinbajo

…Says government will be fair to all

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday said that President Muhammadu Buhari has the final say on the report of the Presidential investigative panel that probed of the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ayo Oke.

Speaking with State House correspondents after submitting the report to Buhari, Osinbajo, said that it was now left for the President to study it before arriving at a decision.

He declined to comment on the recommendations of the report.

Asked what the report contained, he said “Of course not. I mean this is a report which contains recommendations to the President.

It is a fact finding committee as you know and what our terms of reference were was to find out based on the fact available to us and based on the interviews of witnesses of what transpired in those cases of the report one involving the SGF and the other the DG of NIA.

“We have now concluded that and we submitted a full report with recommendations to the President. We cannot of course give you any kind of details because the President has to look at the report, study it and then make his own decisions based on that report.”

On whether the government is going to look at the SGF report from the angle of justice or as close friend, he said “Well as you can imagine we are always fair minded and the whole approach is to ensure that justice is done in all cases.

“It is in the interest of the government and also the interest of the nation that things are done properly and that there is due process and that we are not unfair. You can be sure that we will do the right thing.

Asked how soon the President will decide on the report, Osinbajo said “All I can now say is that we have submitted the report to the President and it is a very detailed report as a matter of fact.

The President has to study the report and make decisions.

Pressed further to give insight into the report, he said “Of course I cannot, how can I? This is a document which has just been submitted to the President. He is the one who will read the recommendations and the facts and then make a decision.

On whether heads will roll, he said “No, how can I tell you? If you want to know what is in the report you have to wait, you really have to wait.”

Lawal was investigated for allegations of violations of law and due process in the award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE).

Oke, on the other hand, was probed over the discovery of large amounts of foreign and local currencies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos.

    Lawmaker berates presidential media aides

Chairman, Committee on Information of the Lagos state House of Assembly, Tunde Braimoh has advised President Muhammadu Buhari’s media handlers to treat the exalted office of the president with all the veneration and reverence it deserves.

He was reacting Wednesday to a statement credited to Buhari’s aide that the President was working from his residence because his office was infested with rodents, saying it is pedestrian and an embarrassment.

The spokesperson of the Lagos Assembly said, “The President working from the office in his residence is not exactly a new or unfamiliar phenomenon neither does it portend any grave or strange omen.

“In any case , the office in the residence was not built for the fun of it and if the President uses it , it is a justification of its function and provision.

“It becomes superfluous, superficial and verbose of the media office to talk so tersely and scantily of the country’s highest office as to say it was infested by rodents. It is a national embarrassment which smirks of systemic failure and abject degradation.

“Methinks it would have simply sufficed if the handlers had said the office needed to be renovated, cleaned up and made more compliant to the personal health and hygiene requirements of Mr. President.

“Such condescending statements as the President’s office being infested by rodents is at the best unnecessary and at the worst pedestrian,” he said.

According to him, without doubt, the office is the pivot around which the wheel of the country rotates and it is the mirror against which we are reflected.

  • Buhari’s speech an anticlimax, says PDP

Buhari’s speech an anticlimax, says PDP

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s Monday broadcast to the nation as a monumental anticlimax, saying the President missed an opportunity to calm restiveness and frayed nerves among the citizenry.

In a statement last night, signed by the party’s Head of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom on behalf of the National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the speech failed to inspire confidence in the people.

According to the PDP, the President’s speech failed to inspire confidence, despite the fact that Nigerians were expectantly looking forward to a robust speech that could imbue confidence in the capacity of the government to take on the challenges of governance.

“However, rather than rekindle that hope and confidence, that speech delivered earlier this morning can most charitably be described as a monumental anticlimax.

“The President and his handlers missed a golden opportunity to reconnect with the people through addressing issues that have direct bearing to their well-being and those of their children and dependents.

“Indeed, the President’s speech did not contain anything new; just a rehash of statements that already had been made by both government and various leaders of thought across the country.

“The PDP had cause to commend the then Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo for going round the country to engage with relevant stakeholders, which certainly was a better approach.

“The PDP believes that rather than rehashing the worn out clichés about Nigeria’s unity not being negotiable, Nigerians would have loved to hear their President come out definitively to tell them what realistic measures his government intended to take to uproot the causes of perennial agitations and counter agitations that are now becoming a recurring decimal in our national discourse.

“The party believes that instead of always mouthing the indivisibility of this country, the government should be seen walking the talk by instilling confidence in all the people across board that it belongs to all.

“The casual mention of ‘elements of Boko Haram’, kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes’ etc, were also somewhat on the perfunctory side and do not imbue confidence”, the statement added.

The PDP observed that the President returned to the country in a week that saw the closure of all public universities as a result of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

“Yet, not even a whimper from our President. Has the future of the future leaders of our country sunk so low in the estimation of our current leaders that the issue was considered not important enough to command a mention in the President’s address?

“To this end, the PDP once again welcomes the President back home and continues to pray for his total recovery as well as God’s guidance.

“But we believe Nigerians deserve a richer statement from a President that was away from them for more than a hundred days during which a lot happened that should have elicited more than a mention in that speech”.

  • Buhari-Jonathan crossfire

Was the state of the Nigerian economy really healthy and buoyant on May 29, 2015 or heading for the rocks?

This was the crux of the controversy between the immediate past administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan and the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The fresh hostility started when Jonathan spoke at the 2017 PDP Special Non-Election Convention in Abuja penultimate weekend.

He appeared to have stirred the hornet’s nest with his claim that his administration handed over a healthy and robust economy to President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2015.

He declared that Nigeria’s economy would have been more robust if the Buhari’s administration had consolidated on the achievements of his administration.

He said, “On the economic front, we provided focused leadership, through institutional and sectoral reforms which impacted positively on the fundamentals for growth, especially in the last four years of our time in power.

“The effect was that we tamed inflation at a single digit, maintained price stability, grew the economy to become the largest in Africa with a GDP of over half a trillion US dollars, and the number one foreign direct investment destination on the continent.

“And I tell all PDP members that from the days of Obasanjo, through the days of Yar’Adua to Jonathan, we have done well. Nobody should intimidate you.

“I learnt that some people said that if PDP had remained in power beyond 2015, the economy would have performed worse. This couldn’t have been the case, because we had a sound economic team in place, managing the economy,” he said

On 2019, he said “Let it be known, in all nooks and crannies of our country, that the PDP is back to claim its rightful place in the affairs of the nation. As we have always done, we are ready to return Nigeria to the path of unity, peace and prosperity,” he stated.

But the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, wasted no time to react to Jonathan’s claims.

He said “With due respects to the former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, these are the facts about the economy you left behind, in case you have forgotten.

“I hope this will help to erase the wrong statement credited to you at your party, the PDP Convention at the Eagle Square last weekend that you handed to President Buhari a robustly healthy economy.

“To the same extent, this should also help to erase yet another false statement by Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, the Caretaker Chairman of the party, to the effect that under the previous administration there was money but now things are very hard.

“Let me start by reasserting an obvious statement, which is that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration was handed an economy ravaged by years of mismanagement and corruption.

“It is understandable that Dr Jonathan kept his comments short, because a cursory look at any sector clearly indicated that he and his Government presided over the most monumental and tragic economic mismanagement recorded in our national history.

“The oil sector boomed under his tenure, with oil prices as high as US$ 120 and peace in the Nigeria Delta. Nigeria earned unprecedented dollar revenues. Sadly, that is where the story turns sour. There is nothing to show for the revenues earned, no major capital project was completed, neither power generation, road development, rail or agriculture benefitted from the windfall earnings.

“Rather the administration presided over  the diversion of oil revenues on a  such a massive scale, that even without the protection now accorded to Whistle blowers, the   then Central Bank Governor blew not only a whistle but a trumpet. He was hurriedly shown the door.

“Meanwhile, the acquisition by public officers and their cohorts of private jets, luxury yachts and the accumulation of expensive property portfolios world-wide continued unabated. Indeed the President once celebrated having the largest number of private jets, whilst our youth languished without jobs, our fields stood idle and our factories began the layoff of workers.

“Government simply reticulated oil revenue through personal spending by corrupt leaders,  wasteful expenses and  salaries. This was done rather than investing in what would grow the economy.

“Economies grow due to capital investment in assets like seaports, airports, power plants, railways, roads and housing. Nigeria cannot record a single major infrastructural project in the last 10 years. In short the money was mismanaged.

“Such was the looting that even the goose that was laying the golden egg was being systematically starved. The direct contractual costs of oil produced , in the form of cash calls, remained unpaid.

“The incoming , President Buhari’s welcome from the oil majors included  demand for US$6Bn owed by Nigeria for oil that had already been sold or stolen.

“At the inception of the current administration, 21 States were unable to meet their salary bills and the spectre of workers arrears had commenced.

“The PDP solution was the raid the Ecological Fund and selectively grant N2Bn each to the PDP States.  It was only aggressive borrowing by the Ministry of Finance under Dr  Okonjo- Iweala that prevented Federal Government from also owing salaries.

“The economic wisdom of borrowing to pay recurrent bills  is a questionable one, particularly as those paid would have included over 45,000 that have subsequently been removed by the Buhari led administration as ghost workers.

“It also included the lavish costs of chartering private jets, first class travel   and other wasteful acts that have been eliminated under this administration.

“To compound the problem the government was borrowing heavily and owed contractors, and international oil companies. When this government took over we had accumulated debt back to the level it was before the Paris Club Debt Forgiveness.

“All these factors  were building up to Nigeria heading for a major crisis if the price of oil fell. Nigeria did not have fiscal buffers to withstand an oil shock.

“The oil shock should and could have been foreseen.  When Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS crisis started, it was clear that the United States of America wanted to cut off funds to terror groups by crashing the price of oil. When America granted permission for exploration of oil on land ( Shale) the warning signs were evident, but these were ignored by Nigeria’s economic managers.

“In summary Nigeria earned a lot of money when oil prices were high but there is nothing to show for it. Now oil prices have fallen we are suffering.

“The Buhari administration has taken a long term strategic view of supporting a stable naira on both the supply and demand sides. President Buhari has driven Import substitution to reduce demand for dollars to buy things we can produce thereby creating thousands of rural jobs in rice and other staples.

“In addition, there is a credible plan to diversity our revenue sources away from oil, with focus on export crops as well as solid minerals, with the release of US$100M fund to develop solid mineral extraction.”

With the resumption of the crossfire between the present administration and members of the major opposite party, spearheaded by the former President, it is becoming glaring that the race for 2019 has begun.

But Nigerians are wiser and before informed now and would be very difficult to mislead for upcoming general elections.

  • Buhari welcome rally shuts down Ado-Ekiti

Buhari welcome rally shuts down Ado-Ekiti

…APC, Civil Society groups slam Fayose for “Death Wish”

Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, was at a standstill for about two hours on Monday as residents under the aegis the Coalition of Civil Society groups staged a solidarity rally to weclome President Muhammadu Buhari back from his medical vacation.

The coalition which includes the All Progressives Congress (APC), Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), labour leaders, youths, artisans, students, market women, commercial drivers and other interest groups slammed Governor Ayo Fayose for “wishing the President dead and making comments that could set the country on fire.”

The rally which started at about 9.00 am at Okeyinmi Roundabout proceeded to Ijigbo before terminating at Mobil area in the city. Many of those who participated in the rally carried placards with various inscriptions.

Some of the placards read: “Welcome Back Buhari, Shame On Fayose,” “On Buhari We Stand, Corruption Must Go,” “The Lion Is Finally Back Home,” “Fayose, You Are A Disappoinment To Ekiti People,” “Fayose Must Commit Suicide Now As Promised,” “Welcome Back, Baba, African Champion of War Against Corruption,” among others.

The rally which was supervised by officers and men of the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) caused a traffic snarl on the major highway in the city.

Protest leaders who took turns to address the people expressed satisfaction with the Saturday’s return of Buhari to the country saying his return will add bite to the anti-corruption crusade and economic recovery.

Ekiti APC Chairman, Chief Olajide Awe, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Kemisola Olaleye, said Buhari’s return has exposed what he called “the unending lies of Fayose” who he said never wished the President to come back home alive.

Awe who accused Fayose of playing God on the health of President advised the governor to emulate his Rivers State counterpart Nyesom Wike whom he said displayed maturity by joining other governors to welcome Buhari despite belonging to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He said: “God has put Fayose to shame on Buhari, God has silenced him for his lies on the President’s health. We appreciate the people of Ekiti State for their good wishes and prayers for our President throughout the time he was away.

“Anybody wishing Buhari dead will go before him, we rejoice with our President that he arrived safely and this has put an end to all the lies of Fayose.

“We urge Fayose to honour his promise, let him be man enough to commit suicide if Buhari returns alive as he had earlier promised.

“Ekiti people are tired of is one-day-one-trouble government and one-day-one-propaganda government and we want to assure our people that Fayose’s day of reckoning is very near.”

Coordinator of Progressive Youth League (PYL), Adeoye Aribasoye, berated Fayose for “raising false alarm” on the health of President by threatening to release eleven damaging pictures of Buhari on life support.

Aribasoye: “God is greater than men, Fayose said he has eleven damaging pictures of Buhari. We want the whole world to know that whatever he says does not represent the view of Ekiti people.”

Labour leader, Kolawole Olaiya, urged Buhari to probe how the proceeds of Paris Club refunds to Ekiti was spent by Fayose regretting that workers are suffering.

“Olaiya said: “We want President Buhari to revisit the issue of the Paris Club refunds to Ekiti State. Local government workers in Ekiti have not received salaries for about nine months.”

CNPP Chairman Tunji Ogunlola said: “Nigeria’s collective destiny cannot be aborted by a tiny group of crooks whose survival depend on the looting of our commonwealth.

“It is on this strength that we believe the President’s return presents a fresh hope for the accomplishment of our collective dream for a great nation as he settles down to work.”

  • PDP, ICF, criticise Kogi’s work free day over Buhari’s return

PDP, ICF, criticise Kogi’s work free day over Buhari’s return

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kogi State chapter Monday criticised the declaration of Monday as a public holiday, by the Kogi State government, for the return of President Muhammadu Buhari to the country.

The PDP described as an aberration, the public holiday declared by the government in honor of the return of President Mohammadu Buhari and Thanksgiving for the safe return from medical trip abroad.

The Director General on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, in announcing the holiday, on Sunday, said it was in line with the “support of the Kogi people for the renaissance of our nation by Mr. President”.

He added: “We urge Kogites to also use the occasion of the public holiday to pray for Mr. President, as he resumes his responsibilities of repositioning Nigeria”.

Relatedly, the members of the Igala Consultative Forum (ICF) said they condemn in totality the sudden declaration of the public holiday, which they described as diversionary.

The group in a statement issued Monday in Lokoja and by the National secretary, Sam Ugbede said: “In as much as we all are happy for his health improvement and smooth trip back home, which is to the delight of all Nigerians, we thank God and the British doctors for the healing and treatment.

“We all remain eternally grateful to God for answering our collective prayer, by granting our leader abundant health. The Buhari we saw; we all are happy but our surprise is the sudden declaration of public holiday by the government of Kogi State suddenly, what is it for?

“Imagine a governor of a state where a dangerous disease has already claimed over ’62 lives’ and still claiming more, particularly in the western senatorial district of the state (Okun land), instead of declaring state of emergency in the health sector, has the temerity to shut down the state to declare public holiday.

“As we speak, lives of innocent kogites are in danger as a result of the epidemic, which diagnosis revealed as ‘gastroenteritis’. What is our governor doing to stop the spread of this deadly disease?

The PDP in a statement signed by Achadu Dickson, Director, Research and Documentation, said that “while it is an acknowledged fact that governance in the state has drifted in the last 17 months, declaring a public holiday in the state is the height of lack and loss of ideas”.

According to him: “While governance in the state has been brought to its lowest ebb, with workers owed salaries and pensions for as much as 17 months, the heavy indebtedness by the state to commercial banks to the tune of N35 billion, with nothing to show in terms of infrastructure, it leaves much to be desired by the declaration of a public holiday.

“The PDP shares in the joy of the recovery of Mr. President, and has always joined in the prayers for the quick recovery of the nation’s number one citizen, loss of man hour with the declaration of a public holiday is an indication that we have reached the lowest ebb in terms of governance.

“The action shows that we’ve entered a one-chance administration in which the ship of state is heading in no direction.

Citizens should pray for God to heal Kogi State. The state has lost focus and is losing the decency of comity of serious states in the country.

“President Buhari must be disgusted by the bootlicking attitude of the governor. Kastina State, the home state of our beloved president has not declared public holiday, why then, is Yahaya Bello taking panadol for another man’s headache”.
