    Northern youths blast Yerima

    • Says won’t welcome unwholesome comments

A group of northern youths under the auspices of Arewa Grand Youth Alliance yesterday accused the leader of Arewa Youth Coalition, Shettima Yerima of trying to undermine political leaders of the north by his public utterance which they believe is capable of creating anarchy in the north.

President of the group, Alhaji Idris Inuwa said in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja that they will not sit back and watch the likes of Yerima who issued quit notice to Igbos living in the north to use the name of Arewa for the devilish purpose.

Inuwa frown at the attempt by Yerima to discredit President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar who he described as two of the North’s finest politicians, adding that such moves will be allowed to succeed.

Inuwa challenged Yerima to show the world his political constituency in the north, pointing out that having lived his all his life in Lagos, he has no single political value in the north.

The statement reads in part “Yarima is deceived by the euphoria that trailed their infamous “quit notice” given to Igbos in the North to leave by 1st October 2017, an action deliberately designed to destabilize the nation, thereby seeing himself as an emerging hero that could speak for the North.

“However, the inconsistencies and vague choice of words in the said interview have clearly shown his ignorance of politics, where the wisdom of elders and energy of the youth are pulled together to produce result. In other words, the elders and the youth must constantly collaborate because no one can do without the other.

“Equally glaring is his lack of appreciation of the dynamics of the Northern region where both the elders and the youth collectively work together on any issue of National significance as determined by exigencies of time. This is not surprising because this is a young man who is alien to the political tradition in the North, as he lived all his life in Lagos.

“We challenge Yarima to come out and tell the world his political constituency in the whole North? And what are his political value apart from being a manipulative political tool in the hands of Northern political rivals who constantly use him for his nuisance value.

“We wish to state here that we are very much aware of his sponsors to discredit two (2) of the North’s finest politicians of our time, President Muhammadu Buhari and Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to achieve their sinister political motives ahead of 2019. As Northern youths and critical stakeholders in Nigeria, we will resist any attempt by the likes of Yarima to use the name of Arewa for the devilish mission.

“Let us warn Mr Yarima and his sponsors to desist from reckless and unguarded utterances against our leaders and elders who have sacrificed so much for our future. Any further attempt will leave us with no option than to bring out his dossier and make it public.”

Archbishop of Canterbury visits Buhari, glad at level of recovery

Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, Friday, paid a personal visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at Abuja House, London.

Special adviser on media and publicity to the President, Femi Adesina revealed this on his Facebook page.

According to Adesina, Archbishop Welby and President Buhari are friends, who share deep respect for each other.

He said Archbishop Welby was delighted to see the rapid recovery President Buhari has made from his health challenges, noting that it was a testimony to the healing powers of God, and answer to prayers of millions of people round the world, adding that, “The cleric pledged to continue praying for both President Buhari and Nigeria.”

Adesina said Buhari responded by thanking Archbishop Welby, whom he noted had always stood by him at critical times, and wished him God’s continued grace in his spiritual duty of leading the Anglican Communion worldwide.

It will be recalled that when former British Prime Minister, David Cameron described Nigeria as a “fantastically corrupt” country ahead of an anti-corruption summit in London in 2016, Archbishop Welby had retorted: “But this particular President (Buhari) is actually not corrupt.”

The Archbishop later personally received the Nigerian President at Lambeth Palace, London, and had also paid a goodwill visit to President Buhari in March this year, during his medical vacation.

Buhari commiserates with Aregbesola over mother’s death

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday commiserated with the Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, over the passing away of his mother, Saratu Aregbesola.

In a telephone conversation, President Buhari expressed sympathy with the governor, describing his mother “as a great woman who was a pillar of discipline to her children.’’

The President, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said the matriarch of the Aregbesola family deserved great honour for “the sacrifices she made to bring up her children on the path of sound moral character and commitment to good reputation.’’

He said that the governor’s mother contributed immeasurably to the building of a respectable pedigree for her family by raising disciplined and humble children like Governor Aregbesola.

He prayed that Allah would bless her soul and reward all her good deeds with paradise, and also comfort the family she left behind.

  • One government, two presidencies?

It is no longer news that President Muhammadu Buhari has been away consulting his doctors in the United Kingdom since May 7. His absence has fueled some controversies resulting in some fake reports claiming that he was dead or permanently incapacitated.

Against the speculations, Buhari last week Sunday received some governors and All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in London followed by another enlarged delegation comprising some governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last Wednesday.

The President was seen in pictures with the delegations, sitting with the first delegation while standing and sitting with the second delegation.

But before the two visits to the President in London, there appeared to be a kind of scheming and power play at the seat of power that have not been easy for many political analysts to unravel.

What was playing out was somehow turning some sitting senators to prophets.

They had last year raised the alarm that the Presidency had been hijacked by a cabal.

The wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, in a BBC interview, also last year, had accused some cabals of hijacking the Buhari’s administration. The President then had dismissed her position by claiming that his wife belonged to the kitchen, the living room and the other room.

But similar events supporting the existence of cabal played out again last month when Aisha Buhari and Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna Central) spoke in riddles in the social media.

Speaking about lion, hyenas, jackals, wolves and weaker animals in their separate postings, they appeared to be talking about the Buhari’s presidency, the President’s sickness, recovery, the masses and the scheming of the cabals.

Sani had posted: “Prayer for the absent Lion King has waned. Until he’s back, then they will fall over each other to be on the front row of the palace temple.

“Now, the hyenas and the jackals are scheming and talking to each other in whispers; still doubting whether the Lion King will be back or not.

“Now, the Lion King is asleep and no other dare to confirm if he will wake up or not. It is the wish of the hyenas that the Lion King never wakes or come back, so they can be kings.

“It is the prayers of the weaker animals that the Lion King comes back to save the kingdom from the hyenas, the wolves and other predators.” he added

As if replying Sani’s post, Aisha Buhari, on her Twitter handle said: “God has answered the prayers of the weaker animals. The hyenas and the jackals will soon be sent out of the kingdom.

“We strongly believe in the prayers of the weaker animals. Long live the weaker animals. Long live Nigeria,” she stated

While all these issues about cabals have largely remained on a speculative realm till date, what has become more worrisome is the seemingly two separate positions been taken by the Presidency on a particular issue.

Apart from this trend manifesting in the last few weeks, it played out again last Tuesday starting with the joint press briefing by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu and the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on media and publicity, Laolu Akande.

The briefing mainly focused on revealing the second delegation of governors leaving Nigeria to meet with the President in London last Wednesday.

About two hours to the press briefing, a newspaper had posted on its website that the two new ministers-designate will be sworn in during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting the following day.

The online report had claimed its source to be an undisclosed Presidency source.

Information was also later gathered that the two ministers to be sworn in got their invitations for the swearing in ceremony more than 24 hours before FEC, which was also before the press briefing.

So in the course of the briefing, question was asked about when the two new ministers will be sworn in.

Adesina had replied: “I like the word soon that you used because that is the real position. The ministers will be sworn in soon, sooner than you think it will happen.”

On whether the ministers will be sworn in during FEC the following day, Adesina said: “I think you are quoting the Acting President wrongly, he said the matter did not come up in his discussion with the President. Your paper has been stating dates so we should ask you where you got your dates from.”

Akande, who didn’t say anything when the question was asked during the briefing, later confirmed the earlier newspaper online report on his Twitter handle.

The message posted on his Twitter handle few minutes past 10p.m, when most newspapers had gone to bed, reads: “AgP Osinbajo would be swearing in the two new ministers already confirmed by the Senate tomorrow morning @ start of the Federal Exco meeting.”

This, apart from the confusion it caused, was definitely not neatly handled.

Even though it was not clear whether Akande only got the information about the swearing in of the two ministers when he released it or he got it earlier, but its very important for the Presidency to always speak with one voice at every point in time.

Doing otherwise, under any pretence and scheming, will go a long way to supporting the claims of the existence of cabals, power-play and division in the Presidency.

While many well-meaning Nigerians are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the President from London in good health, every effort now should be geared to support Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, who is presently steering the ship of State.

This is very important because as it is popularly said, a house divided against itself cannot stand.

Buhari urges Governors’ wives to domesticate future assured programme

The Wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, on Thursday, advised Governors wives to domesticate her pet project, ‘’Future Assured Project’’, to boost the fight against human trafficking in  the country.

Buhari gave the advice at a public lecture in Abuja on anti- trafficking, to commemorate the week-long 2017 World Day against human trafficking.

Represented by Mrs Grace Shema, Coordinator, Women and Youth Empowerment Programme office of the President’s wife, Buhari said that the programme would empower women to be self reliant.

She further explained that the project was targeted at saving vulnerable children to any form of abuse.

“I am calling on the wives of governors to initiate action targeted at the elimination of human trafficking through future assured programme in their states.

“Human trafficking is alien to our culture in Nigeria and we must do everything possible as a people to completely eliminate it from the society,” she said.

The wife of the president described human trafficking as a crime that violated the essence of humanhood, adding that it must be condemned out rightly.

Earlier in her remarks, the Director-General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Julie Okah-Donli, said human trafficking was a threat to human, national and international security.

Okah-Donli said trafficking in persons desecrated the human person and fueled other crimes such as drug trafficking, arms smuggling and terrorism.

“I must confess that our response to trafficking in persons has been reactive and designed to deal with the consequences of the scourge rather than its root causes.

“This makes our current preventive responses a piecemeal and uncoordinated.

‘’We are therefore calling for a much more strategic approach that addresses poverty and social exclusion by government at all levels,” she said.

According to her, the phenomena of human trafficking are multifaceted, dynamic and cost intensive which must be dealt with enlightenment and empowerment therapy.

    Osinbajo swears in new ministers

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday charged cabinet members to join the anti-corruption battle of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

According to him, it’s not enough to just support the war in words only.

The ministers, he said, must support the battle in deed.

Osinbajo spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja while swearing in two ministers-designate, Stephen Ocheni (Kogi) and Suleiman Hassan (Gombe) at the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC).

While Ocheni is replacing the late Minister of State for Labour, Mr James Ocholi, who died in a ghastly auto-crash along Kaduna-Abuja highway in 2016, Hassan is replacing Amina Mohammed, who resigned as Minister of Environment to take up the job of Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The Senate had screened and confirmed the appointments of Ocheni and Hassan in May.

While charging the new ministers to key in to the programmes of the administration, Osinbajo disclosed that their porfolio will be announced later.

They were however directed to join the FEC meeting on Wednesday.

Osinbajo said “Our latest members of the federal executive council are Stephen Ocheni (Kogi) and Alhaji Suleiman Hassan (Gombe).

“We welcome you to the federal executive council, were you have just been sworn in from ministerial nominees but now  ministers of the federal republic Nigeria. Their portfolio will be announced shortly. From this moment they will join the federal executive council and will sit in our meeting this morning. So Prof and Alhaji you will not have time to celebrate much this morning. You will have full meeting today.

“The federal executive council is one that is committed to the very far reaching and reform Programme of this government. That reform Programme is contained in our Economic Recovery and Road Plan. We have focus our attention on key areas of that economic recovery plan and we believe those key areas are things that need to be done to make a difference in the Nigerian economy and in the lives of Nigerians.

“Time and time again we have continued to emphasis the need for ministers to pay particular attention to all the areas that we have highlighted in the economic plan.

“The President Muhammadu Buhari decided to task ministers with specific functions and so we expect our new ministers to be part of this Herculean task in turning around the Nigerian economy and making live better for the citizens.

“Of course you know that aside from the economy we have two key areas highlighted by the president during the course of the campaigns and have become center pieces of our administration Programme – security and the anti-corruption fight.

“We expect that members of the federal executive council will focus on these key areas as well. We have of course made tremendous progress in security, we have issues and challenges here and there but there are compared to where we are coming from very minor indeed and we are tackling them on a day by day basis.” he added

On the anti corruption fight, Osinbajo said, “we are focused we believe that the primary thing is for those of us who have the privilege of serving to ensure that by our own point and actions we support the anti corruption fight and also that our conducts will be exemplary so that we will show by practice not just by words that we are determined to ensure that this country is run by a good government. And where there is honesty and integrity service will be delivered.

“Even as I welcome you to this cabinet, I congratulate friends and family who are here and I can only say going by your antecedence as contained in your resume read out, it is evident that you are deserving of positions held in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that you are capable of rendering all he task that will given to you. The only reward is more hard work and I wish you the best as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” He said

I’m making good progress, Buhari assures

President Muhammadu Buhari has written to thank the President of Guinea, Alpha Conde, for the nationwide prayers held last week by Guineans for his recovery and good health.

In a letter dated July 24, 2017, President Buhari, who had earlier made a phone call to Conde, who is the current Chairman of the Assemblies of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, stated:

“I thank you for your kind and thoughtful action in organizing nationwide prayers for my good health. It is a gesture that I will forever cherish and treasure.

“Your Excellency will be pleased to hear that I am making good progress, and as soon as doctors advise, I shall return to my duties and continue serving the Nigerian people who elected me and are daily praying for my recovery.”

In an earlier letter, President Buhari had also accepted his nomination as leader of the “2018 AU Theme on the Fight Against Corruption”, which came from African leaders at the 29th Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 4, 2017.

“While thanking you for the kind words and for the nomination,” the President wrote to Conde, “I wish to express my readiness to accept this new important role and to reiterate my commitment to contribute towards our collective efforts to strengthen good governance and development on the continent. I, therefore, look forward to working closely with you in the realization of this objective.”

…Falana, Ananaba back calls for restructuring

A former Secretary to the Taraba State Government Senator Abdulahi Bala Adamu Friday lamented that despite their university degrees, five of his children are out of work.

Bala disagreed with “the perception” that Nigerians from the north have it rosier in the country, because a northerner – President Muhammadu Buhari – is in power.

He said the country’s economic challenges affected all Nigerians, irrespective of their region of origin or religion.

The former gubernatorial candidate in Taraba State spoke in Lagos Friday  at the 2017 National Conference of the Public Administration and Management Development Institute (PAMDI).

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was the Guest of honour at the event, themed ‘Re-engineering the Nigeria state: Challenges and prospects.’

Lagos lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) delivered the keynote address.

Falana and Dr. Paul Ananaba (SAN) were afterwards conferred with conferred with Distinguished Professional Service Award and Fellowship Award.

Adamu, who represented his state at the 2014 national conference, said the calls for restructuring was resounding across the country but that there were differences as to what it meant.

He urged Nigerians unite and forge a consensus on how to make the country better.

Adam said: “The idea of existing federal structure and the clamour for restructuring that we are inundated with cannot be wished away.”

He added: “This perception of domination or injustice, I think, is based on a false premise.

“As I stand before you, I had the privilege of getting free education from primary, secondary, university and even post-graduate degree qualifications all paid for by the state.

“I had the privilege of serving my state at the highest level as secretary to government and head if the civil service, I had the privilege of being elected to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but today, I have at least five graduates, my own children, that can’t secure a job.

“And if you say because a northerner is President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, what has it impacted on me and my family? I believe we need to create a consensus about how to move this country forward.”

Falana, who was represented by a rights activist Stanley Imhanruor, backed the call for restructuring if it involved true federalism and justiciability of Chapter 2 of the Constitution.

He said: “It is difficult to talk about restructuring without talking about true federalism.”

Falana noted that he was “100 percent in support of restructuring provided that the issue of justiciability of Chapter 2 of the Constitution and the issue of redistribution of national resources is revisited.

“We must restructure Nigeria economically so that the country’s wealth is fairly distributed.”

He warned Nigerians to be wary of political jobbers who might try to hijack the clamour for restructuring.

Ananaba, who shared similar sentiments, condemned any attempt to balkanise the country.

He said: “Nobody should be preaching the balkanisation of Nigeria; that is wrong. But we should be looking at reducing the size of government. This bogus government style will not help us.”

The chairman, governing council of PAMDI, Prof Uche Jack-Osimiri said re-engineering, rather than restructuring was the way to solve the mounting agitations across the country.

He urged Nigerians to be their brother’s keeper.

“We cannot afford to leave one section of the country behind. Yes there is poverty in the north east, but the rest of the country must not leave them behind to die. We must help them to grow, just like West Germany helped East Germany after the fall of communism,” Jack-Osimiri said.

He noted that the country’s problems were complex, but that the problems had nothing to do with “tribe, federal or unity government. The problem is re-engineering of the Nigerian state.”

Another suit wants court to compel FEC to declare Buhari incapacitated

A new suit seeking to compel the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to declare ailing President Muhammadu Buhari incapacitated and unfit to continue in office was filed Thursday before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/ 671/2017 filed by a group, Kingdom Human Rights Foundation International (KHRFI) is coming three weeks after a similar suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/508/2017 was filed before the same court by a United States-based Nigerian, Toyin Dawodu.

The suit filed Thursday has the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, the Executive Council of the Federation (otherwise known as the Federal Executive Council), the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), and the National Assembly as defendants.

KHRFI also filed an ex parte application to seek a mandatory leave (permission) of the court to commence the main action under the judicial review procedure of the Federal High Court.

When granted the permission sought, the suit, the plaintiff, by virtue of the adopted procedure, intends to ask for a judicial review of whether or not the four respondents to the suit – Osinbajo, the ECF, the AGF, and the National Assembly, had failed to perform their constitutional mandate and obligation under section 144(1)(a) and (b) of the 1999 Constitution in relation to Buhari’s health status.

It intends to seek among others, an order of mandamus compelling FEC to pass the resolution declaring Buhari “incapable of discharging the functions of his office”.

It The plaintiff’s position that the declaration by the Executive Council of the Federation will  enable the Senate President “to constitute a medical panel that will verify the declaration of the Executive Council of the Federation pursuant to section 144(4) of the Constitution.”

In a supporting affidavit, lawyer KHRFI; Patricia Chigbundu said the ongoing medical vacation embarked on by the President on May 7, 2017 was the third in the series of such trips.

She said the President has spent over 60 days abroad since May, yet “Nigerians were not informed on the health conditions of the President.

“That the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, had also embarked on medical vacation on January 19 to March 12, 2017 and stayed for over 60 days and Nigerians were not informed on the health conditions of the President.

“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, embarked on medical vacation from June 6, 2016 and Nigerians were not also informed on the health conditionsof the President.

“Before the latest medical vacation on May 7, 2017, the President was not able to preside over the Federal Executive Council meeting.

“All these series of medical vacations are affecting good governance in Nigeria and Nigerians deserve to know the true condition of the state of health of their President.”

    KHRFI wants among others:

*A declaration of the honourable court that the  Executive Council of the Federation has failed to perform its constitutional duty by failing, refusing and neglecting  to pass a resolution declaring the  President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari who has been away for more than 60 days on third medical vacation since the assumption of office as the President  in 2015 incapable of discharging   the functions of   office;  in view of section 144 (1) (a) and (b) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

*A declaration of the honourable court that the  Executive Council of the Federation  that in the circumstances of the Executive Council of the Federation not passing a resolution  declaring the President incapable of discharging the  functions of his office, the  Senate President  should not go ahead    to constitute   a medical panel  to examine the health condition of the President,   to determine if the President is suffering from  infirmity of body and mind,  and whether the President   has become permanently incapable  to discharge the functions  of  his office;  in view of section 144 (4) of the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria (as amended).

*An order of mandamus compelling the  Executive Council of the Federation to immediately and without any further delay  perform its constitutional duty by   passing  a resolution declaring the  President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari who has been away for more than 6o days on third medical vacation since the assumption of office as the President  in 2015  incapable of discharging   the functions of   office;  in view of section 144 (1) (a) and (b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

*An order of mandamus compelling the  Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria    to go ahead    and constitute   a medical  panel  to examine the health condition of the President Muhammadu Buhari    to determine if the President is suffering from  infirmity of body and mind and to determine whether the President   has become permanently incapable  to discharge the functions  of  his office;  in view of section 144 (4) of the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Daudu, in his case, wants the court to declare that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has the powers to set up the medical panel to determine Buhari’s health status in the absence of a resolution of the Executive Council of the Federation declaring the President unfit to continue in office as provided under section 144 of the Constitution.

The suit is now before Justice Adamu Abdu Kafarati, awaiting a hearing date.
