Tinubu calls for special care for released Chibok schoolgirls

A former Lagos State Governor, Sen. Bola Tinubu, on Monday called for special and adequate care for the released Chibok schoolgirls, to help them overcome the sad experience they had to suffer while in captivity.

Tinubu made the call in a message in Lagos to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerians over the release of more of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls

He urged the government to help the families of the girls to nurture them, for their proper reintegration into the society.

82 of the over 200 girls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno by Boko Haram in April 2014 were released by the sect on Saturday following negotiations with the federal government.

The sect had earlier released 21 of the abducted girls in October 2016.

Tinubu said: “I congratulate President Buhari and Nigerians over the release of more of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls.

“This shows President Buhari’s unwavering commitment to freeing these and other innocent children from the cruel hand of Boko Haram and returning them to their families and community.

Yet, we must keep this good news in proper context. The released children need to be nurtured and cared for in a special way in order to overcome the sad experience that they had to suffer.

“Moreover, we must not forget the girls still held by Boko Haram and we must not forget the grief of their families.

“We owe it to them to press forward until all the girls have regained freedom and Boko Haram is so defeated that it may never again be able to do what it did in Chibok.

“Boko Haram must be defeated. President Buhari has said as much. We all must stand with him and support his strategy to accomplish this humane and necessary goal,” he said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader said the release of the girls showed that President Buhari had kept his eye on the true objective to reunite families and communities under the reign of peace and rule of justice.

According to him, the northern Nigeria, and Nigeria as a whole, may begin to rebuild in a way that brings a decent life and a taste of enduring prosperity to all Nigerians.

“This is the ultimate goal, and the release of these girls is an important step on this pathway.

“I congratulate the President. I congratulate our gallant armed forces.  After waiting so long for the return of their children, the parents of these girls must feel a great sense of relief and elation,” Tinubu said.

  • Strangers are feeding fat on Buhari’s govt – Defunct CPC members

Strangers are feeding fat on Buhari’s govt – Defunct CPC members

Members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the 17 southern states under the auspices of the Southern Mandate Monday described members of the legacy parties that constituted the All Progressives Congress (APC) as strangers who do not share the same vision with President Muhammadu Buhari, but have hijacked the Buhari’s project which they are feeding fat on.

The group said both the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) contributed only about 2.8 million out of 15,424,921 votes secured by President Buhari to defeat former President Gooduck Jonathan who scored 12,853,162 votes.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja and signed by its National Coordinator  of Southern Mandate, Comrade Ikonomwan Francis however wants President Buhari to appoint either the former National Chairman of the defunct party, Prince Tony Momoh or Alhaji Buba Galadima as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

He said such an appointment would “right the wrong” created by the President’s decision to appoint “strangers” to fill vital position in his government, demanding an outright sack of the suspended Babachir Lawal as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

According to him, the suspended SGF should be sacked for having “penchant for corruption” contrary to the focus of the APC government, adding that the request was an opportunity for President Buhari to right the wrong “created in the appointment he has been making so far by replacing the SGF with Prince Tony Momoh or political workaholic Engr. Buba Galadima.”

The statement read in part: “We core members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the seventeen southern states in Nigeria under the auspices of Southern Mandate wish to call on President Mohammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency to out rightly sack the suspended SGF BabaChir Lawal.

“We have taken time to x-ray his antecedence our research reveals that he is very arrogant, mean and has no respect for constituted authority. His attitude towards our distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic is a clear demonstration of this fact and also he has no respect for democracy, therefore has no business benefitting from democratic institution. It becomes very exigent for Mr. President to sack him immediately and the anti-graft agency should persecute him without delay.”

Speaking on why the President should appoint either Prince Tony Momoh of Engr Galadima as the next SGF, the group said: “These are men who led the defunct CPC to give the now President Mohammadu  Buhari over 12millions votes in 2011. This is the only way our President can say thank you to the core members of the defunct CPC.

“The truth remains that the other political parties that merged and coalesced with CPC only 2.8millions votes in 2015. As far as we of the Southern Mandate is concerned, they added little or no value in the emergency of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“But suffice to mention here that, they who are strangers in Buhari’s project have hijacked the entire process and are feeding fat, while the people that make Buhari, a mass movement and a political hurricane are now feeding like an ant in a project we laid our lives for.

“We wish to reiterate our earlier position that the key appointments Mr. President has made so far are occupied by strangers who do not share the same vision and mission of President Buhari for a better Nigeria. For instance the suspend SGF Babachir Lawal, came from the blues to occupy the all-important office of the SGF. We are therefore not surprised that he has a penchant for corruption.

“Prince Tony Momoh and Engr. Buba Galadima are men of implacable character who are co-vision bearer with President Mohammadu Buhari. These men made a very strong foundation for President Buhari.

“We are aware that Engr. Buba Galadima turned down three major juicy appointments from former President Olusegun Obasanjo we also have it on record that former President Goodluck Jonathan offered him FCT ministerial appointment and a cash offer of 2billion naira to abandoned Buhari’s project but blatantly refused the juicy offer.

“On the other hand Prince Tony Momoh is Buhari’s personified who has sworn in many public fora that the day he will take bribe thunder will strike him dead. It is mind blowing that these men are not in Buhari’s cabinet today.”

‘Chibok girls release: PDP insensitive, exhibits disdain for human life’

The Federal Government says the incautious statement by a faction of PDP criticizing the process leading to the release of the 82 Chibok girls further exhibits the party’s disdain for human life.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed described the statement as “indecent, inhuman and ill-timed”.

The minister, in the release signed by his Special Adviser, Mr Segun Adeyemi, said it was insensitive for any individual or organization to spoil the joy that heralded the release of the girls because of politics.

“It is clear that the kind of disdain for human life which the PDP exhibited in its incautious statement is the same reason the poor girls were kidnapped in the first instance.

“It is also this attitude the then PDP-controlled Federal Government took that seemed an eternity before even acknowledging the abduction, thus losing critical time for their rescue.

He noted that from the statement, it was clear that the PDP, whose incompetence and the cluelessness precipitated the Chibok girls crisis was not wishing and praying for it to end with the safe return of the abducted girls.

The minister recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had stated that the defeat of Boko Haram would not be complete without the rescue of the Chibok girls.

“If that includes swapping some Boko Haram elements for the girls, so what? Will the PDP rather have the girls stay in perpetual captivity, just to prove a ludicrous point?

“Didn’t superpower United States engage in negotiations with the Taliban that led to the exchange of five Taliban fighters for US Army Sgt Bowe Bergdahl in 2014?

“Didn’t Israel release 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for one Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit in 2011?

“A lot of factors come into play when a nation has to decide whether or not to engage in prisoner/hostage swap.

“None, however, trounces the sanctity attached to human life and the consideration for the pains of the loved ones of those involved,” he said.

The minister stressed that since the PDP failed to rescue even one of the Chibok girls, the party should hold its peace while the administration continued to seek the release of all the abducted girls, using every means at its disposal.

He reassured that the administration would continue to work assiduously to end all Boko Haram hostilities.

  • On President Buhari’s health

The various comments by many Nigerians for some time now is for Mr President to seek medical attention to enable him govern the country in a sound health.

The argument for or against Mr President to travel out to seek

medical attention is the debate amongst Nigerians now.

No sane person would like to see his president in such condition and support his continue stay in office at the detriment of his health.

All human beings are bound to have one health-related issue or another, but the number one citizen’s health should not be taken for granted as he should have a sound mind and body to carry out the functions of the office he was elected to serve in.

The sentiment expressed by some people that the president should not handover to his highly dependable deputy is not tenable and smacks of mischief and is myopic in the general interest of the entire country.

Nigeria had passed through such ugly past, only God intervened and saved the country from plunging into serious political crises.

Nigerians should raise their voice for our president to seek medical attention anywhere in the world. Those who are selfishly saying other things or against Mr President’s travel outside the country do not mean well for Mr President and this great country.

Recently, our president could not still attend the weekly federal ex ecutive council meeting for the third time in row.

When President Muhammadu Buhari travelled for more than 40 days, the country did not have any problems because of the capable hand that President Buhari trusted to hold the country for him before coming to continue with the task of governing the country.

This show of love by Nigerians should be an avenue for doing what is necessary to ensure he is in good health to take the country to optimal level as he promised them during his clamour to be elected the president of this country after three times of trying.

It’s in this direction that what Nigerians want is for their president to seek treatment anywhere in the world to attain maximum health condition to pilot the affairs of this country.

  • Buhari will complete his tenure in 2019 – Clergyman

A clergyman,Obinna Omerie, has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari will successfully pilot the affairs of the country till 2019 in good health.

Omerie, the founder of Grace and Great Kings Christian Ministry, Egbu, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo, made the declaration while addressing journalists in Owerri on Saturday.

‘‘God revealed to me as His prophet that Buhari will complete his tenure in 2019,’’he said.

He said that those expressing concern over President Buhari’s health are spiritually blindfolded and speaking from revelations backed by satanic sources.

The man of God also said that the economic recession in the country was divinely motivated, saying ‘‘Nigeria’s economy will emerge stronger at the end of the recession.

“For children of God this economy is not so much felt now.

‘‘The situation is fast opening prosperity doors for some cities like Owerri, Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Calabar, because things are positively changing in these cities now.’’

The clergyman derided those predicting that the 2019 elections would not be peaceful, noting that ‘‘those saying the election will be bloody are wrong.

‘‘For me, the Lord has not shown me any blood, the election will be peaceful as usual irrespective of all the doomsday prophecies from some altars and pulpits.’’

Omerie asserted that Nigeria is a nation loved and blessed by God.

He said no evil would befall the nation before, during and after the next general elections in 2019.

He noted that pockets of crisis recorded across the country, according to him, were caused by evil men challenging the supremacy of God.

On the impact of fake prophecy, the man of God observed that the activities of fake religious ministers had created some discords and crises in many families.

He, therefore, appealed to the government and church leaders to evolve means of curtailing the activities of doomsday clerics.

Omeire, popularly called `Authority,’ noted that people who seek solutions to their problems sometimes play into the hands of fake pastors by carelessly disclosing their problems during counseling, which such fake take advantage of.

‘‘People meeting men of God should stop giving `expo’ to these ministers; allow God to reveal things worrying you to the man of God, that is the way God works,’’ he said

He also commended the Senate for the Maritime university Okerenkoko bill that passed third reading in the Upper legislative chamber.

“You know it’s not something that you can just bring up all in one day or in one month, I believe that the processes are being put in place to ensure that we have some of them in some of our communities in the creeks and in the Niger Delta generally,” he said.

Buhari gets briefs on foreign exchange stability

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday received briefings from the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, on the stability in the Foreign Exchange market and other activities of the apex bank.

Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the closed door meeting, Emefiele said that the President was delighted over the stability in the forex market.

He explained that the parallel market is currently stabilising at between N380 and N385 against one US dollar.

He said ‘`Basically as it is expected what we normally do is from time to time to brief the President about activities about the Central Bank of Nigeria particularly at this time as it relates to the efforts that the Central Bank is doing to stabilise the forex market

“We briefed him regarding the activities so far and he was very delighted to hear that the market is stabilising at the level that it is right now and I am saying the parallel market which currently stabilises at between N380 and N385,’’ he said.

According to him, the sudden rise in crude oil production and the subsequent increase in export of the commodity are the main factor responsible for the stability in the forex market.

He said that the crude oil prices which has been oscillating between 50 and 56 dollars per barrel, have helped to boost the nation’s revenue position and also provided some ammunition for the Central Bank to defend the currency.

He said: “Given what we have right now the fact that the revenues are looking good, the state of the economy is good and I believe that we are going to pull out of the problem in due course.’’

He also reassured that the apex bank would continue to make the foreign exchange available to those in need to enable them to import or carry out eligible transactions.

  • Buhari approves $186million to combat criminalities on waterways

Buhari approves $186million to combat criminalities on waterways

…Amaechi to use N100m to dredge River Niger

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved $186million to combat and stem the cycle of criminalities on the Nigerian waters.

The Federal Government has also approved N100m for the dredging of the River Niger.

The Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi made the disclosure on Thursday, at a-Day National Conference on Fast-Tracking Port Reforms organised  by the Federal Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with The Nation Newspapers and Epsilon Limited in Lagos.

Addressing over 800 participants at the forum, Amaechi said that $186m has been approved by President Buhari for the fight against piracy and other criminalities on the waterways.

Part of the money, the Minister said, would be used to buy three helicopters and three aircrafts among others.

His words: “Mr. President has approved $186million to fight piracy in our waters. The funds will be used to buy three helicopters, three aircrafts, 12 vessels stationed in the water. In the next 3 months, all of them would be deployed to fight piracy in our waters.

“We promised change. Change is not talked about, it is felt. That is why we asked that the people should give us time.”

On the dredging of the River Niger, Amaechi said that N100m has been budgeted for the dredging of the project against the N34b paid by the former administration of President Goodluck Jonathan for the same project.

“When the River Niger was first approved for dredging by the previous administration, it was approved for N47billion and N34billion was paid to the contractor. Dancers were called in and there was a party.

“We are not dredging the River Niger with billions of naira, we are dredging the River Niger with just N100m. When we flagged it off recently, did you see us dancing? Was there a party? I just went to see the Governor and told him that the project will start today and will be finished in one month.

“The Governor said he will accompany me, and I said ok. So, I asked the Governor to flag it off since its located in his State.

“People are wondering how on earth we are going to dredge the River Niger for N100m when the previous government awarded same contracts for N47billion. But we are going to dredge the River Niger using dredgers owned by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

“NIWA has dredgers, but the previous government preferred to give contractors money to dredge the river with private dredgers while NIWA’s dredgers were lying idle somewhere in Port Harcourt.

“The NIWA MD told me the agency has dredgers, but it’s been hired out to somebody in Port Harcourt. So we had dredgers, but the previous administration hired it out to some persons in Port Harcourt, while paying a contractor billions of naira to use privately owned dredgers at a very high coat.

“I told the NIWA MD that I will look for money to fuel their dredgers, and work has started. That is why we are dredging the River Niger with just N100m,” Amaechi said.

In her speech, the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Ms Hadiza Bala Usman said are the  gateways to international trade and regarded as major accelerators of local economic development.

“According to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Netherlands has been able to sustain a relatively high economic growth rate because of the Port of Rotterdam, in spite of the intensely competitive environment in Europe.  The success of Singapore is equally attributed to the Port of Singapore which has developed a transport logistic centre and has successfully been able to attract foreign investment.

“It is thereby acknowledged that the maritime sector, an essential component of the transportation system is crucial for wealth creation.

“However, a port becomes an active wheel of an economy only if it is run efficiently. One of the key areas of efficiency that our ports require is the national single window .I am pleased to announce that the Authority and the Nigerian Customs service have concluded the operational model for establishing the National single window and will in the next few months commence with the public tender process of selecting the vendors that will deploy the required information technology infrastructure.

“Presently, the function of a port is not only limited to the traditional activities but has expanded to a logistical platform.  Ports not only perform the basic operations (embarking, disembarking and transferring of passengers and crew, loading, unloading and transshipment of cargo to and from the vessels, storage and warehousing of merchandise on land and stevedoring to and from vessels), they provide inland access and intermodal connections as well as complementary services to shipping carriers,” She said.

Given the abundant mineral and agricultural resources available in most regions of Nigeria and the desire of the Federal Government to diversify the economy, Ms Usman said there was need to explore opportunities to boost economic development.

The Federal Government under President Mohammadu Buhari, she said, has identified agriculture and Solid Minerals as upbeat and that the maritime Industry will play a major role in the movement of the produce and minerals to international market.

“In February this year, all terminal operators and shipping companies were mandated by the Nigerian Ports Authority to set up fast-track desks for export of solid minerals and agricultural produce.  Process of review of associated existing procedures and protocols has been commenced to ensure efficiency and intended results are achieved.

For the Nigerian ports to play this key role in the economy an efficient rail system will be needed  in moving agricultural produce and solid Mineral from the locations of production that are usually in the hinterlands  to the seaports for export.  The Federal Ministry of Transportation has embarked on a $2 billion concession rail project to be handled by General Electric which will provide the needed intermodal support.  It will cover about 3,500km (2,200 miles) of existing narrow gauge lines from the south western commercial capital, Lagos to Kano in the north and south Eastern oil hub, Port Harcourt, to Maiduguri in the North-East.

“We are already recording increase in export of agricultural produce. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in its Trade Intensity Index Report for the Q3, 2016, export of frozen shrimps and prawns for the period July to September were worth over N5billion; Sasame seed export was worth over N4.8billion in the same period; income from cashew export exceeded N2billion; Soya beans yielded over N4billion; Ginger contributed over US$30million

Developing the ports is very crucial for realising the lofty but achievable development objectives of the Federal Government,” she said.

In his speech, the Managing Director and Editor -in-Chief of The Nation Newspaper Mr Victor Ifijeh thanked Amaechi for acceding to the request to collaborate with the paper on the port reform summit.

“This clearly attests to his willingness to make himself available for all initiatives that can move the maritime sector or ward and help fast-track the Nigerian economy.

“We all know the problems of the Nigerian sea ports, they have been well documented. They have also been the subject of various talks. Nevertheless, until the problems are adequately addressed, the need for more engagements like we are having now cannot be over emphasized.”

For the Federal Government’s plans for the sector to succeed, the Editor-in-Chief said the port agencies need to integrate their plans and carry along not only the stakeholders but the Nigetian public.

He urged the forum to create  a peer-facilitated platform which can be used to make the agencies accountable to the goal jointly agreed.

“Considering the presence of maritime experts at this forum, we are confident that lasting solutions will be provided to the challenges bedeviling smooth ports operation,” he said.

Ifijeh thanked the Chief Executives of NPA, NIMASA, NIWA, the Nigerian Shippers Council, the participants and other stakeholders at the forum for their support.
