  • Buhari’s victory: Maryam Abacha Varsity students shut down Niger town in jubilation

Students of Maryam Abacha University at Maradi, Niger Republic (MAAUN), took to major streets of the town to celebrate the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in last Saturday’s election.

Activities were halted in the town for the celebration.

The students marched on the major streets in their thousands, halting traffic and business activities for hours.

The ecstatic students, who chanted pro-Buhari slogans, defied the harsh weather of Maradi to show their goodwill to Nigerians for choosing the right leader.

“We hail Nigerians for their wisdom in electing the right leader. President Buhari is the only leader that can bail the country out of the woods. Nigeria’s path to greatness is now assured. President Buhari’s leadership is a sure way to prosperity,” they said.

The celebration later became contagious as enthusiastic residents of Maradi closed down their shops and joined the students around the town in a carnival-like jubilation.

A MAAUN student, Ousman Bello, noted that the victory of President Buhari marks a watershed in the history of Nigeria’s democratic process because Nigerians, for the first time, showed independence in deciding who leads them.

“Nigeria has definitely consolidated its leadership in Africa because of this unique feat. If Nigeria gets it right, Africa will definitely get things right. We hail Nigerians for electing a leader who is respected all over the world,” Bello said.

  • Buhari’s victory triumph of ordinary Nigerians over elite, says Lai Mohammed

    •Obasa greets President, APC

President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in last Saturday’s presidential election symbolised the triumph of the ordinary Nigerians over the elite, Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said.

Mohammed spoke in Abuja yesterday when he received the management of his ministry, who came to congratulate him on the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at last week’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.

“Last weekend’s election is a direct contest between ordinary Nigerians and the elite, most of whom are rent seekers. Of course, the ordinary Nigerians have won!” he said.

Mohammed went on: “Overall, this government is doing more with less and is restoring decency and integrity to governance. Like the New York Times said, the re-election of President Buhari is a referendum on honesty. There is no better way to put it.”

While reeling out the policies that endeared President Buhari to the ordinary Nigerians, the minister said under the Social Investment Programme, the government feeds 9.3 million school children every day and some 500,000 unemployed graduates have been employed under N-Power, in addition to some 300,000 families who are benefitting from the Conditional Cash Transfer.

In a deliberate effort to boost the Small and Medium Enterprises to contribute significantly to the nation’s economy, the Buhari Administration, he said, gives out interest-free loans of between N10,000 and N100,000 under the TraderMoni and the MarketMoni schemes to small business owners.

“Pensioners who have been left in the lurch are being paid, and I am talking of ex-workers of the Nigerian Airways, NITEL and former Biafran policemen, among others. The former Nigeria Airways staffers were so delighted that they held a rally in support of the President

before the elections,” Alhaji Mohammed said.

He said the fight against corruption is being institutionalised with a number of policies that include Treasury Single Account (TSA), Whistleblower policy, and that it has led to the recovery of huge amounts of money as well as property from looters.

The minister enjoined the citizenry to continue to support the Buhari Administration in building of a strong, secure, economically-buoyant and corrupt-free society.

On the APC’s victory in Kwara, the minister thanked the management of his ministry for appreciating his ‘modest’ effort in delivering Kwara State from the grip of a crippling hegemony.

“I must stress – and I have said this before – that the credit for the liberation of Kwara goes to the good people of State who, despite efforts to compromise them, refused to sell their votes. A simple slogan, O To Ge (Enough is Enough), captured the determination of the people to vote out those who have held them down for decades. And that is precisely what they did,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Deaconess Grace Isu-Gekpe, said the management and staff of the ministry were proud of the minister for his invaluable contribution to the victory of the APC at the presidential and National Assembly elections in Kwara State.

Also yesterday, Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa congratulated Buhari and the APC.

Obasa, in his congratulatory message by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Rasak, stated that the victory recorded by the President and the party showed the clear desire of Nigerians to be taken to the Next Level.

“It was a keenly contested election and we thank God for this well-deserved victory. This is a clear indication of the desire of Nigerians to be taken to the Next Level by APC administration at all levels of governance.

“Nigerians have again trusted us with their mandate and I assure that we won’t disappoint. Commendations from local and international observers have confirmed the commendable performance of the electoral process and I will give INEC a pass mark for its performance,” he said.

Obasa urged Nigerians not to rest on their oars appealing to them to vote massively for the party’s candidates in the Governorship and State Assembly Elections.

“We are grateful for your support and we assure you that the APC administration at all levels will not let you down as we will continue to put in place programmes and projects that will improve your standard of living and enhance your welfare.

“However, we will continue to ask for more support from you. Therefore,  I humbly appeal to you to come out enmasse on Saturday, 9 March, 2019 to vote for our candidates in the Governorship and State Assembly Elections all over the country. I want to particularly appeal to Lagosians to vote for all our candidates in the coming election.

“Once again, on behalf of my colleagues in the Lagos State House of Assembly, I congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of our great party on this resounding and well deserved victory and I say let us do it again on Saturday, 9 March, 2019,” the Speaker said.

  • ‘Why Buhari was re-elected’

    •Accord says Nigerians trust president

The Accord has said hope and trust in progressive and sustainable development was the reason Nigerians re-elected President Muhammadu Buhari.

National Chairman of Accord Muhammad Nalado, who spoke in a congratulatory message yesterday to the President, said it was a victory for democracy and Nigerians.

Nalado contested the Katsina North senatorial election with Ahmed Baba-Kaita, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who won the election.

He said the President, in his first tenure, manifested his capacity to drive the country on the part of economic growth and social security.

The party chairman observed that the nation would be moving through another phase of political and economic development, with his next level now assured.

He urged Nigerians to support the President as he commenced another round of social and economic transformation of the country.

Nalado emphasised that Accord played a significant role in ensuring the President’s victory, having adopted Buhari as its presidential candidate.

He said the party would continue to join forces with him to ensure there was unity and stability in the country.

The past chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) observed that under President Buhari, the railway system was being rehabilitated, while the decay in the road infrastructure was being addressed.

He said agriculture had received a boost, adding that more Nigerians were now employed in the sector.

The Accord chairman argued that under the presdident’s leadership, more social policies had been initiated to cater for the less privileged.

Nalado, however, urged the President not to compromise on his stand against corruption, and enjoined him to go the whole hog to unveil more development policies to benefit more Nigerians.

  • IPAC urges Buhari to order military out of Rivers’ election

Rivers State Chapter of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the military to stay clear off Rivers State during the March 9th  rescheduled Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

The appeal was not unconnected with the blood violence that characterised the last week’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state and the allegation of the military, aiding and abating rigging of the elections among others.

Speaking in a news statement in Port Harcourt, the state capital yesterday, the spokesman of the group in Rivers, Comrade Kukang Ledum Joseph noted that men of Nigerian Army have become a threat to conducting free fair and peaceful elections in the state as well as  the survival of democracy in the country and state in particular.

Joseph said the exclusion of the Army from participating in the Governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State cannot be over-emphasized, to encourage better turnout of voters against the kind of voter aparty witnessed during the rescheduled exercise last weekend.

He said “Saturday February 23, 2019 will forever remain in the memory of Rivers people as a black and bloody Saturday in the election history of the State simply because the army decided to be overly partisan in the breach of their abiding duty to be neutral and provide security for the electoral process.

“What on earth can justify the killings of as many 16 unarmed civilians in a rustic community, which members were barely insisting on their participatory rights and freedoms in the face of the brazen onslaught to scuttle the electoral process. In Abonnema , Buguma , Degema communities alone over 18 innocent civilians including INECs ad’hoc staff and a member of the National Youth Service Corps were killed.

“They also acted directly to prevent the general elections from holding in the entire Akuku Torlu Local Government Area and parts of Asari-Torlu and Degema Local Government Areas under the guise of carrying out election duties.

“ We are all now aware that the direct and partisan involvement of the army resulted in the outright cancellation of the general elections and consequent disenfranchisement of as many as one million electorates in six Local Government areas of the State such as Akuku Toru, Ahoada West,  Bonny, Emuoha , Ikwerre and Okrika.

“Where then is the legitimacy of the results turned in and declared by INEC for Rivers State in the face of the wanton killings , snatching of election materials , disruption of voters , hostage taking of INEC officials and return of fake numbers to APC. Obviously , the army , by its brazen and unlawful involvement in last week Saturday’s general election has become a serious threat to peaceful, free, fair and credible elections in Rivers State,” he concluded.

He pleaded with President Buhari to order the army to stay away from election duties in Rivers State as to allow the police perform their constitutional responsibilities for peaceful and credible elections.

The Deputy Director of Public Relation, 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, denied the allegation insisting that the  Army has remained apolitical and has a professional mandate and responsibility of aiding civil authority and safe-guarding key points and vulnerable points of the country.

  • Labour congratulates Buhari, wants minimum wage paid fast

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to and enforce the new minimum wage Act as soon as passed by the Senate.

Mr Bashir Lawal, ASCSN Secretary-General, made the appeal on Thursday in Lagos in a congratulatory message to the president on his re-election.

Lawal said that Buhari should not delay in signing the new wage bill when ready.

He noted that the bill had already been approved by the House of Representatives.

Lawal commended the president for ensuring timely payment of workers’ salaries.

He said that it was good that the president did not lay off workers, noting that the labour market was  over-saturated.

”We commend the president for ensuring that salaries and allowances of public servants are paid as and when due.

”We are happy that promotion arrears and outstanding salaries owed workers had been settled,” he said.

The ASCSN scribe said that there was no doubt that workers omitted or short-paid would be settled soonest.

He further hailed the president for keeping his promise to make unity colleges  to remain a commonwealth.

He, however, advised Buhari to use the next four years to look at areas that would need improvement in order to enhance national cohesion, peace, prosperity and progress. (NAN)

  • Peaceful polls victory for Nigeria, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday told Nigerians to see the peaceful conduct of the February 23  presidential election as a victory for the nation.

Noting that an election should not be seen as a war, the President said the “victory is enough cause for joy without deriding those in the opposition now that election is over.”

The President’s message was contained in his remarks at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, after receiving the Certificate of Return as the president-elect from the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu.

Buhari’s deputy and running mate Prof Yemi Osinbajo also got the Certificate of Return as vice president-elect.

Besides, the President urged Nigerians to stand in brotherhood for a bright and fulfilling future, assuring that his administration will be inclusive and open.

Buhari, whose second term in office will begin on May 29,  also assured Nigerians of seeing the country moving to the “Next Level”.

The ICC, which was being used as the Collation Office for the presidential election, also hosted governors, ministers, members of the private sector and supporters of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The President also reached out to his opponents at the poll, urging them to join him to build the country that will be a pride to all.

He said: “I am grateful to God for sparing our lives to witness another milestone in Nigeria’s democratic development,  namely conclusion of the presidential election in an overwhelmingly peaceful manner.

“I wish, Mr Chairman, to congratulate all the presidential candidates and their teams on a hard-fought campaign. We may have had different views during the campaign, but the one thing most of us have in common is love of our country and our desire to improve conditions for Nigerians.

“From the comments of several observers both local and foreign, it is obvious that the elections were both free and fair.

“Now that the elections are over, and a winner declared, we must all see it as a victory for Nigeria, our dear country. That was why I encouraged my teeming supporters, in a speech I read earlier today, not to gloat.

“Our God-given victory is enough cause for joy, without deriding those who were in the opposition.  All Nigerians, going forward, must stand in brotherhood, for a bright and fulfilling future.

“I, therefore, want to assure that we will continue to engage all parties that have the best interest of Nigerians at heart. Our government will remain inclusive and our doors will remain open.

“That is the way to build the country of our dream; safe, secure, prosperous and free of impunity and primitive accumulation by those entrusted with public offices.

“The hard work to deliver a better Nigeria continues, building on the foundations of peace, rule of law and opportunities for all. We will roll up our sleeves afresh, and give it our all. We have no other motive than to serve Nigeria with our hearts and might, and build a nation which we and generations to come can be proud of.

“I am very grateful to the over 15 million citizens who voted for me, those who contributed in many ways in the running of our successful campaign, and those at home and abroad who expressed confidence in me and the APC government. I thank you all.

“I can assure that you will see a country moving to the Next Level, as we consolidate on our fundamental areas of securing the country, reviving the economy, and fighting corruption. Many other focal areas, as stated in our campaign manual, will be added, to the good things we plan for our country.

“Let me pay tribute here to those who lost their lives either through accidents or mindless violence during the course of these elections. My heart and thoughts are with the families of the victims. May God comfort and give them the fortitude to bear the loss.

“Election is not war, and should never be seen as a do or die affair. I pray that we all accept this democratic approach to elections, however contentious.”

Buhari and Osinbajo were declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at exactly 4.39am yesterday, having scored the highest number of votes, 15,191,847.

They defeated their closest rivals – former Vice President Abubakar Atiku and his running mate, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, who polled 11,262,978.

The PDP and its candidate have resolved to contest the results at the tribunal.

Buhari and Osinbajo arrived at the ICC in the company of their spouses, Hajia Aisha and Dolapo at 2:11pm.

They got the Certificates of Return from the INEC boss at about 2:20pm.

In a short remark, Prof Yakubu described the presentation of the certificates as a statutory requirement based on the Electoral Act which requires winners of elections to be given their certificate of return within seven days.

The vice president, decked in a white native attire, was all smiles as praise singers sang “Oke Oke la oma lo” (meaning we will always make progress).

The praise singers changed the tune to Sai Baba when it was the turn of the president to receive his certificate.

  • ‘Don’t gloat over victory, humiliate opponents’

President Muhammadu Buhari was at the Situation Room of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Headquarters in Abuja early yesterday.

It was his first port of call after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him winner of the Saturday 23 Presidential Election at 4.38am.

His mission was to show appreciation to leaders of the APC and to caution them against gloating over electoral victory and humiliating opponents.

He reminded that the victory of the party at the presidential election should be enough compensation for their efforts.

The President arrived at the secretariat around 5.19am.

Buhari was declared winner by INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu, who said he scored 15,191,847 votes to defeat his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenger, Atiku Abubakar, who polled 11,262,978.

The President thanked Nigerians for electing him for the next four years. He, specifically, commended the the Co-chairman of the Presidential Campaign Council, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

Apart from commending the members of the Presidential Campaign Council, he also thanked all those who contributed to his victory.

Buhari, who also commended the international community for their interest in Nigeria’s development, lauded the security agents for their patriotic roles during the election.

He said: “First and foremost, I give thanks to Almighty God, who has spared our lives to witness another victory for Nigerian democracy and victory for our party APC.

“I thank the millions of Nigerians who voted to re-elect me as your president for the next four years. I am deeply humbled and profoundly grateful to you for judging me worthy of continuing to serve you and for your peaceful conduct.

“In particular, I would like to thank Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for his masterful leadership as Co-chair of the Campaign Council. I would like to also thank the party Chairman Adams Oshiomhole, the Director-General of the Campaign Council Rotimi Amaechi, all members of the Presidential Campaign Council and other various support groups.

“My grateful thanks go to all those who contributed to the logistical expenses of the campaign in such a vast country like Nigeria.

“I also thank the millions of volunteers, self-appointed overseers, canvassers, agents, escorts and sentries who sacrificed so much of their time and resources to ensure the success of these elections. I do not have the words adequate to thank them.

“I am very sad at the grievous loss of lives during these elections. Security agencies will step up their efforts to protect voters in the forthcoming State elections.

“I would like to commend our security agencies, as severely overstretched as they are, for handling the difficult task of securing the country during the election period.

“I will like to make a special appeal to my supporters not to gloat or humiliate the opposition. Victory is enough reward for your efforts.

“We give thanks also to our domestic and international observers for contributing to the success of our elections and for their interest in our country and our developing democracy.

“The new administration will intensify its efforts in security, restructuring the economy and fighting corruption. • UK, African leaders congratulate Buhari

CONGRATULATORY messages continued yesterday to pour in from the United Kingdom and African leaders for President Muhammadu Buhari on the renewal of his mandate.

The UK Government commended Nigerians for their resilience and commitment to democracy.

A statement from the British High Commission in Abuja yesterday, quoted the Minister of State for Africa, Harriett Baldwin, as saying: “I offer my congratulations to President Buhari on securing a second term as the Nigerian President.

“The UK is a long-standing friend and partner of Nigeria and the Nigerian people and a stable and prosperous Nigeria benefits Africa and the world.”

According to her, the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were consistent with the results obtained through the civil society Parallel Vote Tabulation process.

“Along with our international partners, the UK believes the Nigerian people can have confidence in the result”, the envoy said.

She, however, recognised the concerns expressed by Nigerians on the conduct of the electoral process, in particular logistics and results collation, and reports of intimidation of electoral officers.

The minister urged any party or individual who wished to challenge the process to do so peacefully and through the appropriate legal channel.

“We encourage Nigerian authorities to examine all allegations of wrongdoing carefully, and take the necessary action against individuals found responsible’’, she said.

She also condoled with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in election-related violence.

“No one should die in the exercise of their democratic rights,” she stated.

She reiterated the continued support of the UK to Nigeria and its civil society “in drawing lessons from these elections and strengthening its democracy”.

King Mohammed VI of the Kingdom of Morocco described President Buhari’s victory as an affirmation of the level of confidence Nigerians have in their President and promised to work with him to advance the interests of both countries.

A statement by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity, Garba Shehu, quoted the Moroccan leaders as saying: “Your re-election is a testimony to the level of confidence that you enjoy among the people of Nigeria, attributable to your wisdom, experience in politics, sense of engagement and devotion to the service and the protection of the interests of the country especially as they relate to the prosperity, wellbeing and security of your people.”

The statement said the monarch expressed satisfaction with the existing cordial and fraternal African relationship linking the two leaders, their people, and nations.

He reiterated his determination to work with President Buhari to reinforce the mutually beneficial relationship between Morocco and Nigeria and to give it a new impetus to serve as a model on the African continent.

President Alpha Omar Conde of Guinea also extended his congratulations, describing the re-election of President Buhari as a dose of hope for the West African region.

Prof Conde expressed confidence that the cordial relations between Nigeria and Guinea will continue to get better.

President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, who was the first leader to call President Buhari minutes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him the winner of the February 23 presidential election, said he looked forward to working with the Nigerian leader to further strengthen Nigeria-Niger relations.

President Buhari has also received congratulatory messages from Presidents Nana Koffi-Addo of Ghana and Macky Sall of Senegal.

  • Tackle lapses in electoral process, Olawepo-Hashim urges President

People’s Trust (PT) presidential candidate Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has congratulated the All Progress Congress (APC) presidential candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, on his declaration as the winner of last Saturday’s presidential election.

He, however, called on the President to be mindful of numerous lapses identified in the electoral process.

Olawepo-Hashim, who ran a robust campaign harping on issues and preferring solutions to them, stressed the need to tackle the noticeable gaps in the elections, including card reader failures, thump printing of ballot papers, allocation of results, violence and killing plagued the polls.

He said he was congratulating the declared winner for the greater good, peace and progress of the nation and also in compliance with the peace accord, which all the aspirants signed.

In a detailed statement, where the politician articulated his positions, he expressed his gratitude to the team of supporters who broke the bandwagon and showed loyalty to him, making him one of the frontrunners beyond the dominant party candidates.

The PT presidential candidate said: “I am particularly thankful to the people of Yauri Emirate and Zuru in Kebbi State, who spoke through their votes that family ties cannot be easily broken by politics. While the APC and PDP remained the dominant parties in Kebbi State, the great people of Kebbi State showed loyalty to the bloodline by making sure that People’s Trust emerged third in most of the state.

“I continued to receive calls of support and solidarity from titleholders in the emirates and village heads, who continued to say to me, ‘I hope you saw our hand?’. I saw their hands. The votes were many, not the 96 votes declared by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).”

Olawepo-Hashim was clear in maintaining that his party went around the country in the campaign season and he was one of the few alternative candidates to the two dominant parties, APC and PDP, who organised rallies and engaged in commercial advertising both on the print and the electronic media right to the last day of campaigning.

The PT’s messages, he noted,  were clear that Nigeria can indeed build a US$4 trillion economy within 10 years, and that the country can be united and secured, besides the ability to employ youths by creating four million jobs per year and paying workers a living wage of not less than N50,000.

According to the business mogul turned politician: “We passed a strong message that a ‘new and better Nigeria is possible’.

“Now, the election has been won and lost. It is my duty, as a matter of honour as all contestants signed an accord to keep the peace and congratulate the winner. I, therefore, offer my felicitation to the winner of the 2019 Presidential election, President Muhammad Buhari. I pray for God’s guidance for him and wisdom as he steers the ship of the state further in the next four years.”

He explained that the nation cannot pretend everything has been smooth in the processes leading to the election and the election itself.

“Some of the ugly realities are assignments for political leaders and the entire citizenry to fix in the immediate future with a view to resolving them so as to building a stronger democracy, a more united and prosperous Nigeria,” Olawepo-Hashim said.

The presidential candidate with a rich history of activism alleged an attempt to politically delegitimise the PT, its presidential candidate and other platforms.

He said pursuant to this, were ridiculous votes in the region of 40, 90, 100 in different states allocated by the chairman of the INEC and his team, which the candidate claimed did not in any way reflect the actual number of votes obtained by the People’s Trust in the elections.

“The total votes announced in many States and FCT were in fact less than votes recorded in some and most of the polling units,” he said.

To the gallant contestant, while People’s Trust cannot claim to have out-performed the APC and PDP in any state, in most states of the North-Central and Kebbi State, it recorded votes that place it in the third position.

“Unfortunately, the handler and fixers of the current exercise will rather choose to ridicule the People’s Trust while allocating huge figure to shadowy parties that were deliberately registered and propped-up to give support and legitimacy to the ruling party. The whole idea was started earlier in the campaign season, by scheming the People’s Trust out of the presidential debate and electronic media channels controlled by the ruling party,” Olawepo-Hashim said.

Rather unruffled, he continued: “These political forces, who are not simply contented with rigging elections in 2019 alone, also want to determine the set of political platforms to promote for the future. They want to play God over our destiny. These forces are unhappy that the People’s Trust submitted the highest nominations into offices during the nomination exercise. They are unhappy that we won the online votes among the alternative parties. They have done everything to attack and destroy our platform, but we are undaunted and not intimidated.”

He alleged further that “the odious scheme of this anti-PT forces finally came to the fore when one of the private stations controlled by the ruling party quickly assembled some proxy analysts to lampoon the ‘bad showing’ of some young parties, they immediately launched a deregistration of these parties, even only after the results of only two states had been officially announced, this is how petty, ugly and low, the electoral and political process in 2019 has descended to”.

On electoral irregularities, violence and killings, the business magnate stated that it was noted in many locations and the unusual large numbers of cancelled votes in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa and other areas.

He added: “Incidentally, these states fall within the catchment areas of the People’s Trust (PT). In many states, we have received reports of ballot snatching, delayed arrival of voting materials or deliberate non-distribution of materials and wide spread irregularities. We hope the managers of the process will address these problems and stop further bloodshed in the land.

Other than this, he said in the build-up to the election, following the initial postponement, they envisaged the present scenario and the reason why they requested in their letter dated February 17, 2019 for a four-week postponement of the polls to allow for a properly audited system and a cool-off period from what was obviously a desperate election scenario. Unfortunately, the major parties appear to be interested in having the election anyhow and not properly.

“The outcome of the 2019 presidential elections, even though we have accepted it in the interest of peace and stability of the country, fall short of international standard and the standard established at the 2015 election. President Buhari must, soon after the governorship and state Assembly elections, probe the inefficient conduct of the INEC. It will be time also to have a national conversation on how to unbundle the INEC and have a more efficient and transparent Election Management Process,” Olawepo-Hashim stressed.

On vote buying, he said they “saw massive voters’ inducement with cash, especially by the two dominant parties”.

“Whatever support, therefore, obtained by them has been immorally and illegally acquired. Cash deployed have also been above the threshold set by the electoral act.

“One unfortunate dimension of the vote purchase market in the just concluded presidential election is that the practice was not just driven by unscrupulous politicians desperate for votes but by the demand of about 60% of the voters who turned for financial gratification before voting. Candidates who refused to offer cash-for-votes were generally referred to as ‘unserious candidates’ and severely punished at the polls. Nigerians as a people must have an honest debate about vote buying and its impact on the electoral outcome and governance,” he said.

Olawepo-Hashim said the election showed that the victor has secured a massively tainted victory that lives behind ‘a sour taste in the mouth’ and a broken polity, but it is his responsibility to pick the pieces and heal the wounds that have already been inflicted in the land.

”On my part, I consider it a rewarding participation in spite of the outcome. It is always honourable to stand up for duty to one’s country, regardless of the outcome. I remain undaunted; I remain solid in my faith that a better Nigeria is possible. I pledge to you that you will find me always a willing partner in the unfinished assignment for the peace, unity and prosperity of Nigeria, even as the future beckons,” the PT candidate said.
