  • ACF, NLC urge Atiku to concede defeat

THE Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) yesterday congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari, urging him to run an inclusive government.

It also urged Buhari’s main challenger in the presidential race, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to concede defeat and congratulate the president-elect.

Also yesterday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) asked all those who lost in the just concluded presidential and National Assembly elections, especially former Vice President Abubakar, to put the interest of the nation first and accept defeat in good fate.

According to the ACF, conceding defeat and congratulating President Buhari by Atiku, will be in the overall interest of Nigeria and rank the former vice president among global democrats.

In a congratulatory message signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, the ACF said there was credible evidence that the election was peaceful, free and fair.

It equally called on President Buhari to ensure that “the new administration keeps to its promise of strengthening Nigeria’s unity and inclusiveness in government, so that no section or group is left behind or left out”.

The ACF said: “The declaration of President Buhari of the APC as the president-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC)’s Chief Returning Officer, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, after collating all the election results of 2019 presidential election received from the 36 states and FCT, and having satisfied the requirements as provided by law has signalled a new administration in our democratic process.

“The journey to this point has not been easy to the contestants, the electorate and other stakeholders. However, with perseverance, resilience, determination and hard work by all in the electoral process, Nigeria has come to this successful end.

“The 2019 presidential election is another milestone in the nation’s election history in view of the keen contest between the two major contenders in the persons of President Buhari of APC and Alhaji Abubakar of PDP.

“The successful conclusion of this election despite some of the ugly incidences witnessed in some parts of country in terms of ballot box snatching, killings, security challenges and other logistic problems, Nigerians have clearly demonstrated their resolve to move forward and consolidate the gains of multiparty democracy.

“ACF, therefore, congratulates all Nigerians for their resilience, commitment and courage in exercising their civic responsibility amid challenges that are natural concomitant of such tasks and responsibilities.

“The ACF equally congratulates President Buhari on his re-election as the president in the just concluded 2019 presidential election. Of equal importance, the ACF salutes the courage of Atiku for putting up a gallantry fight with an impressive performance in the presidential elections.

“The forum calls on Atiku as a committed democrat, who cherishes peaceful democratic transition, to accept the will of the people, concede defeat and congratulate President Buhari on his well-deserved victory, especially as there was credible evidence that the elections have been generally peaceful, free and fair.

“Such concession on the part of the main challenger would be in the overall interest of Nigeria and place him among global democrats…

“ACF urges all Nigerians to demonstrate the same spirit and commitment in the March 9 Governorship and State Assembly elections.”

NLC President Comrade Ayuba Wabba, in a statement in Abuja, urged Atiku and other losers to bear in mind that no candidate’s victory or loss is worth the blood of any Nigerian or their property.

He told the President that his re-election should avail him a great opportunity to reflect on and re-assess his vision, strategy and implementation as well as enables him to complete pending projects and initiate new ones where feasible.

The statement reads: “The NLC wishes to congratulate Buhari on his re-election as President, being the second person to get re-elected since the return to civilian rule 20 years ago.

“We also wish to congratulate other candidates for their participation and urge them to accept the outcome of the election, and adherence to the peace accord they had signed before the election.

“The electioneering campaign, although bitterly fought and the election itself keenly contested, we urge the President-elect and any aggrieved party to put first the interest of the nation. We reiterate that no candidate’s victory or loss is worth the life or property of anyone.”

  • Buhari’s victory an expression of Nigerian’s sovereign will, says Tinubu

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday described the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari as a decision against returning to the dark past.

To the former Lagos State governor, the President’s re-election is a historic step forward.

In his congratulatory message on Buhari’s victory at the Saturday 23 presidential election, titled:”Nigerians made the right choice. The task ahead is hard, but Buhari is able”, the Co-Chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council said the President has what it takes to take Nigeria to loftier heights.

The statement reads: “On Saturday, February 23, the Presidential Election was held. It was a fair and honest exercise that permitted the full expression of the sovereign will of the Nigerian people.

“In a decisive manner, the electorate have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to serve a second term. You, the Nigerian people, have given him a clear, indisputable mandate to lead us for another four years.

”In re-electing President Buhari, you have shown that you believe Nigeria should move forward to its better future instead of returning to the mistaken ways of our past.

“You have chosen victory over defeat, hope over despair, prosperity over poverty. You have elected the path toward a greater Nigeria instead of that toward our lesser selves.

”For this collective act of courage and enlightened optimism, we can do nothing but express our most profound gratitude and thanks to the millions of APC members and to all Nigerians for their patience, and their commitment to our democratic electoral process.

”This election represents a historic step forward. When history is being made, often its authors do not realise the larger dimensions and consequences of their actions because they tend to be somewhat blinded by the press of daily events.

“Yet, I believe as the years unfold and the history of Nigeria is later written, future generations will look fondly on this moment as the time when Nigerians, in strong and clear accord, affirmed their belief in our nation’s greatness and in the path that President Buhari and the APC have taken to reach that greatness.

”With this election, Nigeria signals to the world our unalloyed embrace of democracy and our unflinching determination to perfect this democracy.

“While this election was free and fair, we also must acknowledge the isolated incidents of violence. Nigerians were killed and injured during what otherwise was an exemplary democratic procession. Such things should never happen and do us no good.

”We must dedicate ourselves to the principle that elections are meant to better all of our lives and thus there is no reason why elections should result in the impairment of even a single life. Let us work even harder to ensure that the March governorship and state assembly elections be devoid of such unfortunate incidents.

”No doubt Nigeria has its challenges, but it stands undaunted as a nation. Nigeria is stronger today under the leadership of President Buhari who continues to lay the critical reforms that constitute the foundation for durable, broadly-shared economic development.

”President Buhari has marked progress against the terror of Boko Haram. In his second term, he will continue to install peace where there is unrest and violence and he will not cease in this task until Boko Haram and its evil brethren are no more.

”He will continue to battle corruption head on. Given the President’s fortitude and determination, I know corruption will lose this battle and receded from being a major factor in our public arena.

”This current leadership owes our youth and all Nigerians to build a political culture of civility, tolerance and equality.

”The tasks before us are hard. We dare not underestimate the challenges that await, but the rewards that beckon are profound. The people of Nigeria are industrious and brave. The ground beneath us is fecund and it is ours. Our plans are visionary and bold. Our goals are just. And the president you have re-elected is honest and true.

”The confidence I have in this positive confluence of leadership, people, resources and ideas is an unwavering but also a glad and comforting thing. If we put ourselves to it, there is nothing that another nation has done for itself that we cannot achieve for ourselves.

”There is no aspect of national greatness and achievement that lies beyond our reach. Thus, we should look forward to the next four years with hearts filled with hope and hands ready to work.

“Only God can create the Promised Land. Yet, with God’s help, we endeavour to make of Nigeria a land of greater promise and prosperity for all her children.

”With President Buhari at the helm for four more years, I know we can achieve this. Congratulations to President Buhari on your re-election.

”Congratulations to the APC for the fine showing across all the February 23 elections. More importantly, congratulations to the Nigerian people for the wisdom and courage shown in deciding that the best of Nigeria still resides in our future and that President Buhari is the man you best trust to lead us into that future. Posterity shall reward you for what you established on Election Day.

”Today the sun shines brighter on Nigeria. If we work hard, tomorrow we shall be able to say the same thing.”

  • Personal feelings on presidential and congressional elections

With the final tallies of these elections largely determined, it seems the political status quo at the presidency will be maintained after May 2019 when President Muhammadu Buhari will begin his second term. I will next week share my ideas on what the president must do to run an all-inclusive government. But for now I want to share some personal moments with my readers.

Two members of my family were involved tangentially and frontally in these elections.  These are Akin Osuntokun and Fela Durotoye respectively. I have personal aversion for politics although I have strong political views which I have often expressed as diplomatically as I can.  I also grew up in an intensely political family. Some of my readers old enough may think I am referring to the pre-independence and post-colonial politics in Nigeria. It goes beyond that because my great grandfather, Dada, was a generalissimo in the Ekitiparapo army of the 1870s to 1880s. War of course is politics by other means. When the war ended, my great grandfather, a prince of Ajase- Ipo ancestry supported BalogunIshola  Fabunmi who even though a prince too tried to use force to overthrow the then reigning king of Okemesi. When the abortive coup failed, Fabunmi and my great-grandfather had to leave Okemesi. Fabunmi later became king of Imesi-Ile, the original homestead of Okemesi people while my great-grandfather remained in exile in Igbajo. Our family houses were burnt.

History repeated itself in 1966 when after the January coup d’état, our family houses were again burnt by enemies of Chief Oduola  Osuntokun  my brother, who was a minister in the Awolowo and Akintola governments. It was then I vowed never to be involved in politics.

It is a long history which I do not want to inflict on my readers since this is already in my autobiography since 2005.

Now to the current politics. FelaDurotoye is a son I am very proud of. His case is that of morning shows the day as childhood shows manhood. Fela’s father, Professor Tokunbo Durotoye was more than a cousin to me; he was my elder brother whose love for me was as total and as intense as mine for him. When he passed on prematurely after having reached the status of professor of physiology, I tried my best to support his young children of whom Fela was the youngest and most precocious and in character a chip of the old block. When he was a child, without having lived in Okemesi, he spoke the dialect to the admiration of those who had lived there all their lives. He showed how much in touch he was with the local reality of his native town. When he graduated, I went to Ife to throw a cocktail party for him and when he got his first salary he shared it to all of us saying he heard that he was expected to do this. Fela’s mother, Adeline Bisi Durotoye was a professor of Geology unfortunately she died a few years ago. She was my classmate at the University of Ibadan. She was a great and gentle soul who loved everybody with the love of Christ. She came from the ruling house of Onimole in Lagos.

When Fela told me he was contesting for president, I tried to dissuade him and sent him to have discussions with people versed in the difficult terrain of Nigerian politics. I also spoke to my brother, Professor Olu Durotoye, Fela’s uncle who agreed with me about the whole thing being a wild goose chase. But Fela is old enough and he had my prayers. I am happy he made his mark and the future belongs to him and his generation and if people in heaven can see what goes on here, Fela’s parents will be immensely proud of him as we all are.

Akin Osuntokun in my very eyes has become a seasoned politician. Needless to say we have our political differences arising out of our age and political experiences. Akin has a great gift of the pen which he sometimes deploys with killing effect. He is more of a scholar in politics than a real politician. He is too brutal with his opinion and language. He reminds me of Chief Awolowo who in 1979 said if he was elected president he would abolish the ministry of information and tourism because there was no infrastructure to support it and that only somebody who had enjoyed so much luxury in the west and wants to have a taste of hell would come to Nigeria as a tourist! He added he would immediately ban importation of used clothes and dried Stork fish from Norway. He argued, usually with facts, that using clothes that had been worn by others was degrading and that eating dried stork (panla or oporoko) fish which was fed to slaves being carried across the Atlantic to the Western Hemisphere duringthe transatlantic slave trade brought back unhappy memories of the humiliation of our black brethren. He was right on both counts but our Igbo compatriots said he deliberately targeted those two items because he hated them. Chief Awolowo must have been shocked by the interpretation of his political opponents. Akin Osuntokun writes with academic license which as a politician he should have been avoiding. I have seen some of his well-reasoned writings and interviews and I tell myself that my nephew should go back to the university to study diplomacy. Privately, I have been urging him to go for a PhD in any area of political science which he should be able to finish within three years and instead of going back to politics he should join a university anywhere in the world and he will be able to mellow his rhetoric and argue as an academic rather than as a politician.

Akin has an uncanny understanding of Nigerian politics and he has inherited from his illustrious father the mastery of the English language even more than many of us who have spent all our lives in academia. I try to moderate his written interventions but in recent times his verbal interventions have not always been what I would have advised or wanted. I guess what now guides my political discourse is the Yoruba adage of “Eniti Sango ba toju e wole a mope oba Ko so nikoso”. I was incarcerated for months by the Abacha regime. Needless to say it was not a pleasant experience and I won’t want my enemy not to talk of my blood relation to experience such wickedness and humiliation. When Obasanjo set up the Chukwudifu Oputa panel  in 1999,  I went before it to give testimony of what the great Nnamdi Azikiwe would have called “man’s inhumanity to man”. But nothing came out of it. The whole thing was a charade signifying nothing and did not assuage our feelings and neither was any one held to account because General Abacha did not personally and directly maltreat those of us in detention in his name.

In this election, I supported General Muhammadu Buhari just I have supported his political career and electoral contest in the last four elections for many reasons bordering on his personal integrity and my personal knowledge of him. I first met him, I think in 1980 or thereabouts. He was a student in United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, specializing in command and general strategic studies. Obasanjo had just handed over power to civilians in 1979 and Buhari was minister of petroleum resources in Obasanjo’s military government. Dr Olusola Saraki, father of Bukola Saraki was a senator in the Second Republic. He was chairman of senate committee on petroleum resources and had alleged that N2.8 billion was missing from the account of NNPC.  Buhari was so peeved that he wanted to abandon his programme to return home to defend his honour. Before returning home, he came to consult with Major General (Dr) Olufemi Adefope who was staying in my house in Potomac Maryland USA with his wife and was receiving medical attention. Mrs Dotun Adefope was my wife, Biodun’s aunt. It took all the medical persuasive effort of Adefope to prevail on Buhari and calm him down that he was not personally involved in keeping NNPC’s book in order. He was later cleared. He made a strong impression on me on that occasion. The second time was in 1983 in Professor Jibril Aminu’s house when Aminu was vice chancellor of University of Maiduguri and I was dean, faculty of arts. General Buhari had ordered the 23rd Armoured Brigade under the then Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Dogonyaro to pursue from Bagaacross Lake Chad, Chadian troops who had invaded Nigeria. Buhari was then GOC 3rd armoured corps division of the Nigerian army in Jos. He was allegedly reprimanded by civilian authority in Lagos for not getting approval for his action. The third time I met him  was when in 1984  as head of state, he and General Tunde Idiagbon, his deputy, hosted my brother, Professor Kayode Osuntokun and his family to a lunch in Dodan Baracks for my brother’s  national merit award  in medicine. The fourth time was in 1992 or thereabouts when as ambassador of Nigeria to the Federal Republic of Germany, I met him in Frankfurt and later went to pay courtesies to him in Hamburg. He opened up to me about how Babangida detained him and his patriotic wishes for the country. His simplicity in all these occasions was simply overwhelming. His greatest shortcoming is that his human and social horizons are severely limited. If he sees me today he will not be able to recognize me which is a terrible fault in any person in politics. But all put together he can be a battle axe to fix the problems of this benighted country if he opens up his circle of advisers and if he recruits the best people from across the country right away not  waiting until he is sworn in for another term. I hope somebody like Ken Nnamani will be made Secretary to the Government of the Federation to assuage the feeling of isolation of people of the Southeast.

  • ‘Victory ends dominance of few’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Dr Olusegun Osinkolu, has said the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in last Saturday’s poll has ended the tyrannical tendencies and dominance of few cabals in the country.

Osinkolu said the few politicians who had been dictating the pace and holding Nigerians by the jugular had been politically retired to their ‘family fortress’

He noted that that the President’s re-election victory testified to the fact that Nigerians were appreciative of the monumental achievements of the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party chieftain said Nigerians had spoken through their votes that the present government is people-oriented.

The Director General of Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation congratulated members of his council in Ekiti State for delivering the state to the President.

He hailed Nigerians for showing their desire for a more prudent, decent and masses-oriented party, like the APC, to lead the people for another four years and rid the nation of corrupt tendencies.

In a congratulatory message yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, especially to the APC political family, Osinkolu praised the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, for allowing the votes of Nigerians to count in a transparent electoral process.

“On behalf of the campaign council in Ekiti, I congratulate President Buhari for this resounding victory. It signposts the end of tyranny and political dominance of a few cabals in our dear nation, especially those who have been dictating the pace and holding Nigerians by the jugular.

“With this well amplified appreciation shown by the masses to President Buhari’s presidency, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must have swallowed its pride and much-touted mantra that the present government under Buhari’s watch was incompetent and not intellectually-inclined to drive Nigeria to success.

“We felicitate with Nigerians at this auspicious time that they have decided to revalidate the government they put in place in 2015.”

  • UK congratulates Buhari on re-election

The UK Government has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on securing a second term as president.

A statement from the British High Commission in Abuja on Wednesday, quoted the Minister of State for Africa, Harriett Baldwin, as saying “I offer my congratulations to President Buhari on securing a second term as the Nigerian President.

“The UK is a long-standing friend and partner of Nigeria and the Nigerian people and a stable and prosperous Nigeria benefits Africa and the world.”

Baldwin commended Nigerians for their resilience and commitment to democracy.

She said the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were consistent with the results obtained through the civil society Parallel Vote Tabulation process.

“Along with our international partners, the UK believes the Nigerian people can have confidence in the result.”

She, however, recognised the concerns expressed by Nigerians on the conduct of the electoral process, in particular logistics and results collation, and reports of intimidation of electoral officers.

The minister urged any party or individual who wished to challenge the process to do so peacefully and through the appropriate legal channel.

“We encourage Nigerian authorities to examine all allegations of wrongdoing carefully, and take the necessary action against individuals found responsible’’.

She also condoled with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in election-related violence.

“No one should die in the exercise of their democratic rights,” she stated.

She reiterated the continued support of the UK Government to Nigeria and its civil society “in drawing lessons from these elections and strengthening its democracy”.

He said “First and foremost, I give thanks to Almighty God Who has spared our lives to witness another victory for Nigerian democracy and victory for our party APC.
“I thank the millions of Nigerians who voted to re-elect me as your president for the next four years. I am deeply humbled and profoundly grateful to you for judging me worthy of continuing to serve you and for your peaceful conduct.

“In particular, I would like to thank Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for his masterful leadership as Co-chair of the Campaign Council. I would like to also thank the Party Chairman Adams Oshiomhole, the Director General of the Campaign Council Rotimi Amaechi, all members of the Presidential Campaign Council and other various Support Groups.

“My grateful thanks to all those who contributed to the logistical expenses of the campaign in such a vast country like Nigeria.

“I also thank the millions of volunteers, self-appointed overseers, canvassers, agents, escorts and sentries who sacrificed so much of their time and resources to ensure the success of these elections. I do not have the words adequate to thank them.

“Although Saturday’s elections were relatively peaceful, troublemakers in a handful of states attempted to disrupt an otherwise orderly process. Security agencies will bring to justice all those arrested in the process.

“I am very sad at the grievous loss of lives during these elections. Security agencies will step up their efforts to protect voters in the forthcoming State elections.

“I would like to commend our security agencies, as severely overstretched as they are, for handling the difficult task of securing the country during the election period.

“I will like to make a special appeal to my supporters not to gloat or humiliate the opposition. Victory is enough reward for your efforts.

“We give thanks also to our Domestic and International observers for contributing to the success of our elections and for their interest in our country and our developing democracy.

  • Buhari’s victory shows Nigerians determined to move forward, says BMO

The Buhari Media Organization has said that the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the just concluded Presidential elections was a clear sign that Nigerians were determined to take their destinies in their hands and work for a truly progressive advancement of the nation.

Chairman of the group, Niyi Akinsiju told The Nation that the victory is also a further assertion that Nigerians believe in the programmes and philosophy of the government.

He said “President Buhari’s victory is evidenced of the determination of Nigerians to take their destinies in their hands and spawn a truly progressive advancement in value-driven governance and elevation of the nation’s development trajectory to new heights as led by President Buhari since 2015.

“President Buhari’s victory is a further assertion of Nigerians confidence in the programmes and underlying philosophy of the government which is pivoted on respect and care for the common Nigerian.

“We are especially thankful to President Buhari for inspiring a new template in the political firmament of our country; now, in breaking with our historical vulture tradition, we are witnessed to the fact that a government should not abuse the privileges of State to secure power; we also now know that government can continue to deliver on governance in an election year.

“We thank Nigerians for seeing and appreciating the distinct ennobling characters that constitute the Buhari personage, it truly takes a discerning people to acknowledge this especially given the rambunctious and deliberate obfuscation of issues dressed in vicious propaganda by opposition figures during the electioneering campaigns. This, indeed, is a victory for Nigerians”.
