  • Sandra Odige speaks on the signed disability bill

Disability advocate and publisher of La Mode Magazine, Sandra Odige, has expressed her gratitude towards the recently signed disability bill by President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that the bill will boost the confidence level of persons with disability.

“I am indeed grateful for the signed bill for persons with disabilities,” said Odigie.

“This bill will further boost the confidence level of persons with disabilities and reduce all forms of discrimination faced by these persons.”

“Over the years, I have used my magazine ‘La Mode Magazine,’ to advocate for persons with disabilities. Being a voice makes me fulfilled to further drive home my message on disability awareness and empowerment. Hence, the establishment of the La Mode Magazine Foundation. The foundation is focused on awareness, Job recruitment, free trainings and skills acquisition trainings to empower persons with disabilities as they too can add significant value in the society.”

The bill which was signed into law by the president prohibits all forms of discrimination on ground of disability and imposes a fine of N1, 000, 000 for corporate bodies and N100, 000 for individuals or a term of six months imprisonment for violation. It provides for a five-year transitional period within which public buildings, structures or automobile are to be modified to be accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities, including those on wheelchairs.

  • Revolution: FG urged to prosecute Sowore, others connected to treasonable felony

The Federal Government has been urged not to be soft with insurrectionist, Omoyele Sowore and others connected with treasonable felony.

The Civil Rights Movement of Nigeria (CRMN) made this plea in a press conference in Abuja on Monday following the arrest of the founder of Sahara Reporters.

The Police had accused Sowore and the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria of trying to force a regime change in the country.

They said inciting Nigerians, home and abroad, to join a planned ‘revolution’ march against the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Monday, August 5, amounts to treasonable felony and acts of terrorism.

Sowore, a pro-democracy activist and the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the last general elections, had been deluding a critical mass of Nigerians, through various platforms, in readiness for #RevolutionNow, a series of planned protests against the government.

However, according to CCRMNs President, Aaron Dutoye, Mr Sowore had a clear blueprint designed by the major opposition party to overthrow the government, having failed to legitimately do so at the last elections.

To serve as deterrent to others with similar intent of causing havoc, the group, therefore, advised the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately arraign Sowore for treason. CRMN further urged the DSS to secure a court order to keep Sowore in its custody once he is arraigned given the gravity of the crime he has committed and the potential instability his release could pose.

    Read full statement below:

Gentlemen of the press, the Department of State Services (DSS) heeded the calls of concerned Nigerians and organizations and arrested one of the organizers of the #DaysofRage protests, which also goes by the name RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore. The arrest brought to a closure the harassment that he has directed at Nigerians and their duly elected leader.

It is pertinent to note that while there are several known leaders of the planned protests, which has a couple of proscribed groups in its ranks anyway, Sowore has been indiscriminately inciting. He used expressions that suggested protesters will bodily remove elected leaders from office while security agencies will be targeted for attacks to the extent that they will cease to be in existence. There are tweets, video and other documentary evidence to this effect.

Clearly, there has been a coordinated campaign to intimidate law enforcement organizations from doing their job. This included describing Sowore’s arrest as kidnap or abduction. Influential Nigerians have been sold dummies and recruited to condemn his arrest without them referring to his crime. It is legitimate to demand for accountable government but plotting to overthrow a legitimately elected government is certainly not something that any government in the world will accept.

We are aware that Sowore is hoping to pass himself off as an opposition member even though he only scored 33,953 of the more than 28 million votes cast, less than the winner, President Muhammadu Buhari scored in one local government. Some of his international media collaborators are describing him as opposition candidate simply to create the impression that the government is clamping down on the opposition. Sowore’s co-traveller, Atiku Abubakar gave the game away in his reaction to the arrest; he made it obvious that the plot to overthrow the government is the same plan B they had worked on when it became apparent that President Buhari remained the preferred choice before the election.

Law enforcement agencies are invited to note that the other leaders of #DaysofRage protests have vowed to go ahead with the destruction they had planned to carry out across the country even with Sowore’s arrest. They made this stance appear like their own version of defiance but what we have found out is that they believe Sowore would be released without standing trial. They cited several instances to buttress this point. They are also hopeful that there would be enough public criticism to dissuade the government from pressing charges.

Such outcome will not be in the interest of the country as it will encourage anarchists and fascists to keep attempting to overthrow the government. If this continues it is a matter of time before they succeed especially as they are teaming up with foreign agents of destabilization in this destructive plot.

The best deterrence is to send a strong message to all the anti-democratic forces in the country that there is no room for anyone that may wish to destroy our dear country. Example must be made of those that are attempting to derail our democracy for failed politicians. This is our suggestion for dealing with detractors of Nigeria and enemies of our democracy.

We demand that the Department of State Services (DSS) immediately arraigns Omoyele Sowore for treason to serve as deterrent to others with similar intentions, and that includes the foreign agents in Nigeria. The Service must ensure that it secures an order from the court to make him remain in custody once he is arraigned given the gravity of the crime he has committed and the risk his type poses to stability in the country.

Since those goading Sowore to prison are pleading freedom of speech, an arraignment in court will provide him the chance to convince the court that this was the case and where he fails he can be rest assured that his tenancy will be guaranteed at whatever prison he is assigned to.

Those that are threatening to cause mayhem to demand Sowore’s release and those threatening to press ahead with the protests should note that that same fate awaits them because there are specific laws that are being violated.

In view of the confidence being expressed by Sowore and his associates about how they are above the law of Nigeria, we urged the government to engage international partners on why they should stay off its domestic affairs for which there is an adequate legal framework.

  • Again, Obasanjo knocks Buhari over leadership style

… Nigeria should Borrow Rwanda Elite Consensus Model, Bugaje

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday came under attack few days to the 2019 presidential election.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo urged Nigerians not to despair, but be optimistic and vigilant despite the fact that Buhari is under performing.

Obasanjo said that time has come when every Nigerian must have a Nigerian dream where there must be some commonalities adding that in assessing the mid-term government of President Buhari, security, fighting corruption and job creation remain where they were when the government started as it was not yet a success story.

He said if Nigeria as a country must get it right, especially entrenching good democracy, there must be good governance, free and credible elections.

Speaking at the Public Presentation of a book titled, “Politics as dashed hopes in Nigeria by Dr. Auwalu Anwar, former President Obasanjo however urged Nigerians to rise and defend the country’s fledgling democracy.

Obasanjo vowed to do everything humanly possible to safeguard democracy for good governance in Nigeria and for all Nigerians.

He said in the next couple of months, four West Africa Countries including Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire will be having their elections, adding that one common feature is that the four incumbent presidents were in the opposition and people voted for them.

The former president said that the world is watching to see how they would strengthen Democracy in their respective countries.

Obasanjo who was the Chairman of the book presentation at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, said that democracy without a strong opposition is akin to a marriage without a bridegroom to consummate the marriage.

The book which is published by Safari Books is made up of twenty- two chapters, with 614 pages.

The former President said: “I am not in despair and I would ask the rest of us not to be in despair; our hope lies in democracy with good governance as one of the hallmarks which is free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

“What should be our take home; yes things may be gloomy, things may not be what they should be, yes leadership may be underperforming, we must not lose hope, that is the first thing.

“The second is that I believe we must have some commonalities that we will all hang on to. One our common nationality, Nigeria; this is the time when we must have a Nigerian dream, what is Nigerian dream, what can I hang on to? Yes I am a Nigerian and because I am a Nigerian I expect this.

“And I believe if we all see ourselves first as Nigerians and then we enunciate for ourselves the Nigerian dream, a land flowing with milk and honey, a land of opportunity, a land that gives you a stake in all that it is, I think, we will have a country that we can all be proud of.”

“I believe that every record we can keep of the history of Nigeria in totality, it doesn’t matter from what point of view you are writing, it is good for the future of this country because if we do not know our past, we may not be able to channel the right course to our future. It is important that we keep the memory of the past so that so that we can enlighten our present.

“I must also congratulate him for the courage and the research work he has deplored in writing such a lucid and comprehensive book. I could see from the content from the book what may appear as the author’s frustration which led to the somewhat melancholy title.

“Since the book is about The Buhari Organisation (TBO), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Progressive Congress (APC) and Buhari’s political life and activities up to the second year of Buhari’s administration. I will touch on two or three points that may be of interest to all of us.

“President Buhari served the purpose of galvanizing efforts to get Jonathan and PDP out of office. Buhari and the APC must get the credit that because democracy without a strong opposition is like a marriage without the bridegroom consummating the marriage.

“But on the midterm score card Dr Anwar pointed out three significant and tangible areas of failure; security, fighting corruption and job creation. As at today these three areas are still what they were at midterm not yet a success story.

“Dr Anwar touched on another significant but intangible areas of failure; exemplary leadership which induce character and power for the sake of what may be called power for self aggrandisement. I can say that I understand where Dr Anwar is coming from to get the title of the book, but we must face despair with optimism.”

Obasanjo went further that: “I am not in despair and I would ask the rest of us not to be in despair; our hope lies in democracy with good governance as one of the hallmarks which is free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

“Between now and the next few months, there are four significant countries where elections are taking place in West Africa; Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Cote d’ivoire. The incumbent in the four cases were in the opposition and people voted for them, it was good for democracy.

“The world is looking at these four countries in the incoming elections to see what will be their contribution to cumulatively strengthen, improve and stabilize democracy in each of these four countries. If we all cherish democracy, we will all guard and protect our fledgling democracy and that I believe is the main purpose of Dr Anwar’s book.

“As for me I will do everything within me possible to safeguard democracy to good governance in Nigeria and for all Nigerians.

“I am particularly happy in this respect that most Nigerians themselves are rising to their duties, obligations and responsibilities as guardians of our democracy. I commend all those that are standing for democracy. Remember that if you stand aloof when evil is being perpetrated you will become an accomplice in the perpetration of evil.

“Nigerians must be the architect of their own fortunes and future progress but equally gratifying is that the international community have accepted the responsibility and committed themselves to take necessary actions to ensure the health and sustenance of our democracy therefore making politics a great hope for Nigeria, for West Africa and indeed for Africa rather than great despair or dashed hopes.

“We salute and appreciate those who support us for the general good of Nigeria with a population of 200million and rising, our misfortune has implications for the rest of Africa and the rest of the world in general. Nigeria’s potentials shall be realised by the grace of God.”

In his Keynote address, a former member of the House of Representatives, Usman Bugaje, who noted that there was the absence of elite consensus in Nigeria, where each zone is doing its own, without a common sense of purpose; however urged Nigeria to have a replication of Rwandan model of national integration in addressing socio-political crisis in Nigeria.

According to Bugaje, the elite consensus introduced by the Rwandan President, Paul Kagame which reconciled Hutus and Tutsis was required to salvage Nigeria, just as he explained that Rwanda went through the worst genocide in the world but rose to become the safest country with the fastest growing economy in Africa within twenty years, adding, “I am confident Nigeria and other countries can escape crisis. And what gives me this confidence is Rwanda. I am not a fan of Paul Kagame because he has his shortcomings. He is human.

“What Paul Kagame does is elite consensus. Today if you go to Rwanda you cannot know who is a Tutsi, who is a Hutu. If you ask them, you will never get an answer. They will just smile. Because they agreed that, they will not go back to that thing that divides them. And they succeed. This is what we require to salvage our country.”

According to Bugaje, Poor quality of governance and poor delivery was deepening poverty, with large number of out of school children, just as he said that Parties have lost content, conscience and courage and plays out now is politics of big men which took over from the politics of big ideas, thereby leading to emptiness, money and violence.

Bugaje who also took a swipe at the aspect of the constitution which harps on eligibility and nit suitability, said that in the 21st century, it was out of place and not suitable to say that secondary education should be the requirement needed to be the president of the country, adding that there was confusion, clear absence of transparency in the country as well as poor politics of governance.

Bugaje who noted that the leadership was not interested in thinking about where Nigeria would be in the next twenty years, the world of Information Technology, wealth moving away from oil to creativity, said that the only consensus now is to loot treasury and continue thuggery, but was quick to add that inspite of all these, there was still hope as we need courage and resilience.

Also present at the event were former Vice President and Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar who was represented by former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwanso; former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammed Uwais; governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El- Rufai who was represented by his deputy; Col. Lawal Gwadabe, Professor Terhemba Shija who was the book reviewer, Spokesperson of Afenifere, Yinka Odunmakin, former Minister of State, Defence, Johnson Agiuyi Ironsi, Jnr, Akilu Ndabawa, Senator Ibrahim Ida, Dr. Umar Ardo, among others.

  • Osinbajo launches school feeding programme in Edo

…as FG feeds 9.3 million children

Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has launched the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP) in Edo State, to provide free meals for children in public schools in the state.

During the launch of the programme at Eyaen Primary School in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of the state, Osinbajo said the NHGSFP feeds 9.3 million children in 49,937 public primary schools in 27 states, including Edo State.

Earlier, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, who received Prof. Osinbajo at Western Boys High School in Benin City, thanked the Vice President for the visit, and commended him for the Social Investment Programme, which has added value to the lives of Nigerians.

In his speech, Osinbajo noted that the programme employs 94,422 cooks while over 100,000 small-holder farmers are linked to the programme.

The Vice President said in feeding the children across the country, 594 cows are slaughtered, 138,000 chickens killed, and 83 million tonnes of fish used in preparing the meals.

He said the NHGSFP is part of the Federal Government’s Social Investment Programme which is one of the largest safety net programmes in Nigeria.

According to him, “N-Power employs over 500,000 graduates and 200,000 non-graduates across the nation. Two million people benefit from our Micro Credit Scheme which includes Trader-moni and Market-moni. This will be expanded to the next level to enable more Nigerians benefit from it.  We will be able to reach five to 10 million Nigerians.”

The Vice President said the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has been able to achieve these because it has fought corruption to secure the country’s resources and develop the nation.

Speaking on the impact of the Social Investment Programme, Obaseki said the programme has provided an opportunity for vulnerable families to feed and send their children to school.

He explained that the NHGSFP would be linked to the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation programme to bring out the best in school children, and thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and Prof Yemi Osinbajo for the initiative to feed children in schools.

“This is a new dawn in Edo State that is ensuring that our children in schools across the state are not malnourished,” he added.

The focal person of N-Power in Edo State, Ms. Osayuwamen Aladeshelu, said the NHGSFP has benefited thousands of Nigerians, who now include people in Edo State.

“The programme is targeted at making children healthy. We are starting from Uhunmwode and Orhionmwon local government areas before spreading to other areas in the state.”

  • NANS leaders under fire over election stand

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) leadership is under fire for promising to mobilise 20 million votes for President Muhammadu Buhari. But NANS has denied endorsing the President for a second term. Despite the denial, Education Rights Campaign (ERC) and others are calling for a change in NANS leadership, comprising intelligent and cultured individuals to manage students’ affairs. ADEGUNLE OLUGBAMILA, ZAINAB LAWAL AND BUSOLA SEBIOTIMO report.

The fate of the current leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) hangs in the balance

There have been diverse opinions from students and activists following a video that went viral where NANS President, Comrade Danielson Bamidele Akpan,  claimed that his constituency would mobilise 20 million votes for President Muhammadu Buhari in the general election coming up next month.

The body had met President Buhari a few weeks ago to find lasting solutions to the strike embarked upon by both  the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Ahead of the meeting however, NANS President had threatened fire and brime stone over the strike. Speaking with The Nation on phone last month, Comrade Akpan had threatened  that the students’ body would disrupt the general election if his colleagues were not back on campus within 14 days. But with his pronouncement after meeting the students’ leader is now giving another impression on whether his leadership is actually for the interest of his constituency, or he is using his position as a meal ticket.

    NANS washes hands of allegation

Meanwhile, NANS has openly denied mobilising any support for the Federal Government.

In a phone conversation with The Nation on Monday, Bamidele, accused certain media outfit of not being fair about the outcome of  their encounter with President Buhari. He similarly denied the rumour that NANS’s visit to the Presidency yielded a financial reward of N150 million, and  a  posh car.

While not denying his endorsement of the President, Bamidele said issues bordering on students’ welfare and resolution of  the ASUP, ASUU strikes were substantially deliberated upon.

“What is being reported in the media does not fully represent our position and we are not happy,” Bamidele began.

“Looking at events in the past, NANS has always been known to be political. There is hardly any election, be it national or state, that students have not been involved.

“If we were to take many (media organisations) to court, we would have been a lot richer by now.

“Many media and online sites reported that NANS was given N150 million and a brand new car. That did not happen. Some reported that I am driving a car valued at 40 something million. I don’t even have a car close to what was stated.

“We have documented all that is being said in the media and our legal team is currently handling that.

“The reporter who broke the news is from a Federal Government-owned television station; and he was being unprofessional with his job. We are not happy that that reporter discarded the substance and came up with the political aspect which was his (reporter) own interest.

“Watch the video again. It was edited. If I’m lying, let them produce the unedited tape of our deliberations with the President. I am happy that other TV stations carried it. You watch and compare with what government TV station carried.

“It is because we have a gullible society.

“I’m a leader and a much younger person to the President. When a younger person visits an elderly person on any contending issue, African culture demands that you show a measure of respect while also putting your grievances forward, more so when the person we are talking about holds the highest political office in the land.

‘’We discussed a lot about the strike affecting our members and the need for government to address lingering issues with ASUU, ASUP and COEASU (Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union).

“Ever since the report hit the airwaves, have you seen me mobilise students or coerce any student organisation to mobilise support for the President? I have even warned some of my officials to desist from dragging NANS’ name in the mud because of their political interest.”

    From NUNS to NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) was founded in 1980 to replace the banned National Union of Nigerian Students (NUNS), also founded in 1966 following structural changes in the West African Students’ Union. It brought together student councils in Ife, Zaria, and Nsukka.

In 1978, NUNS staged a nationwide protest against imposition of fee increase under the military regime, a development that led to deaths or injury of over 20 students, closure of three universities and proscription of the students’ body.

In May 1986, NANS staged the ‘Ali Must Go’ (referring to the former minister of education) protest where police bullet felled more than a dozen protesters in Ahmadu Bello University. The incident triggered a pandemonium on other campuses nationwide.

ERC seeks impeachment of NANS leaders

Meanwhile, the coordinator of an education advocacy group, Education Right Campaign, Comrade Hassan Soweto, has challenged individual student activists and those concerned about students interest to take their destinies in their own hands by moving for the impeachment of the current NANS leadership.

‘’We call on Nigerian students and activists to question the role of NANS leadership by removing the current leadership and replacing them with a more genuine leadership. The current leadership is using NANS as a meal ticket to negotiate for bribes and handouts from the corridors of power, Soweto, told The Nation.

‘’The NANS that we all once knew was a democratic and virile students’ body, even during military rule.

‘’Our position on the pro-government stance of the current NANS leadership by all intent and purpose does not reflect the interest of Nigerian students.

“This statement of fact is evidenced of failures of NANS leadership over the last 10 years or more, in the face of anti-student policies such as fee hike, victimisation or proscription of students’ leadership. We expected that NANS would advocate before the Federal Government its core programmes as enshrined in its founding document.

“The recent manifestation of this is the position of NANS to Abuja where the NANS president promised a government that is underfunding education the votes of Nigerian students’’.

But when asked that Danielson has denied it, Soweto said NANS leadership was only hiding behind a finger.

He continued: “Regardless of whatever other issues NANS delegation must have put before the President, the fact that NANS promised a government votes of Nigerian students and has not come out to deny that video aspect that is now in the public domain leaves room for doubts.

“The question therefore is ‘at which meeting of NANS was the decision taken to visit the President on behalf of the students?’ That alone is an impeachable offence.”

    Mixed reactions by students

Onifade Abosede, a final year Sociology student of Lagos State University, described NANS as a mere selfish body.

“NANS as a body is more of a figurehead,” Onifade said.

“They are just there for their selfish interest. I’m a Nigerian student and can’t point out a particular achievement of the association. Students across the nation are not even carried along, so we cannot be effectively involved in the association’s dealings.

“The president of NANS, Danielson Akpan Bamidele keeps telling the press that we’d come out in full force to protest against the ongoing ASUU strike, to no avail.

“NANS are barely heard of until there’s strike affecting higher institutions in Nigeria! It’s disheartening to even hear of recent that the NANS president who claim to see the president regarding the ongoing ASUU strike collected what we call “KIZO” (money received when one pays an influential person a courtesy visit).”

Yewande Fasan an ND Mass Communication student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, lamented that NANS office have since been hijacked by opportunists.

She said: “It’s quite unfortunate that NANS is not serving its main objective again. Some so-called students’ leaders use the office to extort money from politicians and philanthropists. NANS was once a reliable union in which students see them as their mouthpiece, and believed whatever they said.  But the NANS of now are now government’s indirect mouthpiece. Unfortunately, we students pay for it because NANS cares  less about our interest.”

Corroborating ERC, Oso Olasunkanmi, another final year Mass Communication undergraduate of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), is seeking a change in NANS’ value system, rather than its leadership..

He said: “NANS leadership of today fights for its own pocket at the expense of welfare of Nigerian students. I would not want it abolished; but rather call for restructuring and a changed value system with the body and its ideology. If possible, a check to NANS’ excesses and the need for its non-partisanship.”

However Olasunkanmi has a soulmate in David Titiloye a 300-Level Education Management of Unilorin.

“I don’t think NANS should be abolished,” Titiloye opined.

“We must remember that NANS was once a part of some struggles in the past that our present generation is now benefiting from which includes resisting the then military government.

“What we need today is an overhaul of the new order that has given rise to people without the knowledge of history on what NANS truly stands for.

‘’What we have as leaders today are opportunists lacking basic understanding on what it means to be a comrade but are only interested in enjoying the benefits of holding the once prestigious title of being a NANS comrade.”

Another final year undergraduate of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile Ife Adesanya Busola, agreed NANS should be scrapped because successive leaderships have been so corrupt and therefore outlived their importance.

He said: “NANS has always been known for violence and corruption; hence I am indifferent to their existence.  If successive leaderships had done the needful, Nigerian universities would not be in the state it is today. Honestly speaking, I see no importance of their existence. A valid example is my university, since they banned the SU, we have been running a smooth calendar. This is because these people (NANS) always do things in their favour to get the side of the Federal Government for their interest, like appointment and the rest.”

Aborowa Fiyinfoluwa who is a 500-Level law undergraduate of the University of Lagos (Unilag), also felt NANS is needless.

“Generally I believe NANS aren’t entirely relevant to the educational system,” Aborowa noted.

His opinion is also shared by Ololuo Emmanuella, a 400-Level English Language student of OAU.

He said: “I think NANS is dormant. I don’t really know about them. If they are seriously working, of course we’d have heard about them and we’d also see significant changes in the educational sector.”

Coker Dolapo, an ND 2 Mass Communication student of  The Polytechnic Ibadan, is pitching her tent on the retention of NANS.

“NANS, I believe, is a good platform. It has assisted students to fight for their rights. Although they are not perfect as all other unions are, but they are relevant in the goals and objectives they aim to achieve.”

Ohiafi Christopher a 300-Level Political Science and Social Studies, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Oto/Ijanikin, went down memory lane on NANS good old days.

“In January 2014, my last year at Government College Owutu, I remember reading from The Nation Newspapers of a former student activist Segun Okeowo who died fighting against a 50 kobo increase in feeding fee. That was a good cause to die for. Reading of Okeowo’s championing the ‘Ali must go’ protest against (former military Head of State Olusegun) Obasanjo-led government in 1978, I couldn’t wait to get into university. It’s now four years after, and I’m afraid to admit losing hope in student unionism. Like every Nigerian student, I now pay a tuition fee of 50 per cent increase.”

Idowu Omotoyosi, an ND 2 Mass Communication undergraduate of Yaba College of Technology, is advocating filtering of students into leadership position.

She said:  ‘’There is no usefulness in appointing people into a particular post and in the end they are not serving the purpose for which they were appointed. I can’t say NANS should be banned outright; I can only suggest they should be reorganised. They must be well screened before they are appointed to such position. Anyone who found himself in a position of being a NANS committee member should not see it as an opportunity to fulfill his ambition and they must not be instruments to politicians.”

Okeke Pascal who studies Pharmacy at  the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, shares Idowu’s sentiment.

‘’In terms of leadership, our student leaders should be screened, and trained if possible,” Paschal said.

“Just imagine visiting the President concerning the strike and then promising him 20 million votes. For me, NANS shouldn’t be banned because we the students need a body that can speak for us, represent us and fight for our rights. That is what they are there for.”

Makinde Ojokoro Tope who studies Physics at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, sits on the fence.

“Sincerely, I really wish I could say they shouldn’t be banned, but I just find it extremely hard to see their usefulness these days. Maybe if there is a way they can be reformed, they shouldn’t be, but if not, they should just abolish them,’’ noted the final year student.

Oni Afeez a 300-Level Economics and Social Studies of AOCOED, also shared Makinde’s view.

‘’NANS leadership needs to be screened in order to erase tyrants and looters that operate in the shadows,’’Oni concludes.

  • Elections: Why Zamfara APC must not field candidates – Senator

The Senator representing Zamfara Central, Kabiru Marafa, Tuesday insisted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State must not be allowed to field candidates in the February National Assembly and March governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Marafa said that the ruling of an Abuja Federal High Court that Zamfara APC should not field candidates for the elections should be obeyed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Senator who is also Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resource (Downstream) stated this at a press briefing in Abuja.

He said that INEC should stand by its earlier position that the Zamfara State APC has no candidates for the elections due to the party’s failure to conduct primary elections within the time frame set for it.

Marafa who is also a member of APC noted that allowing the party in Zamfara State to be on the ballot for National Assembly, governorship and State Assembly elections would be injustice of the highest order and must not be allowed.

Marafa said: “I am a loyal and committed party man but my loyalty to the party has limitations especially in a situation where justice is required.

“My loyalty first and foremost is to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, because we must have Nigeria before we can have the Senate or political parties.

“So, my loyalty is first to my God and to my people. APC is not a religion. So, if APC decides that the worst APC candidate is better than the best other candidates from anywhere, I will respect them because they are in politics to field candidates to win elections.

“But that cannot be true to me. So, I would go for the best for my people.

“So, even if it means APC losing in Zamfara State, I don’t give a damn. After all, the crisis that we are in today started with the APC itself.

“The governor (of Zamfara State) is going around whipping up sentiments that INEC should not accept the court judgment delivered in my favour because APC would lose Zamfara if the party did not present candidates for the election which to me is balderdash.”

Marafa however assured that President Muhammadu Buhari would win in the State landslide without Governor Abdulaziz Yari’s input in anyway.

He said, “Thank God President Muhammadu Buhari has broken the political barriers in the political space now. Before, it was the President that needs the governors. Today, the President does not need the governors to win elections; rather, they need him.

“President Buhari is going to win Zamfara. He will stand by the truth. He is pained by what is happening in the state and he would want to see a change of leadership in Zamfara State.

“I have not spoken with him on the issue but I believe that he will share the same view with me. It would be better to have a better person from another party (as governor in Zamfara) than to have a bad person from APC just because you want APC to win.

“Of what benefit is an APC governor that will allow all these killings and corruption in Zamfara to continue?”

He said that external influence in the matter of the state would fail as the people of the state know what is good for them.

The Senator said that they were awaiting the decision of INEC since the electoral body said that it is studying the conflicting judgements on matter.

He accused the state governor of procuring judgement from the state High Court in his (governor’s) favour.

  • Foreign interference won’t be allowed – Oshiomhole

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole has declared that it would not allow foreign countries to interfere in the internal affairs of Nigeria.

Oshiomhole was reacting to the coordinated statements by the United States of America (US), United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) on the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen.

Speaking with State House correspondents on Monday night after President Muhammadu Buhari had dinner with APC senators, he said: “The thing is that Nigeria is not a colony. I think we all have to be careful. We must defend the sovereignty of our country.

“We welcome collaboration, we welcome peer review, we can compare notes, we welcome people who are interested in sharing experiences with us whenever the need arises, whether it’s capacity building, making useful suggestions on how we can continue to improve on our electoral process.

“Those are very valuable contributions that we appreciate.

“But Nigeria is not a colony. We will not accept any foreign interference in the internal affairs of Nigeria.

“When they dismiss judges in Europe…judges have been dismissed in the United States when they are found guilty of corruption and the Western world cannot on the one hand, when it suits them, describe Nigeria as fantastically corrupt and when a corrupt judicial officer is being charged, people want to interfere.

“What anybody can insist on is, is anybody being framed? Is the suspended CJN guilty of the allegations made against him? Or is it something being cooked out from nowhere?

“Now, if a Chief Justice of the Federation admits that he has breached the law, if a Chief Justice of the Federation admits that he has several foreign domiciliary accounts, even though he also admits that by nature of his office, he is not s trader, what is he doing with accounts in British pounds, US dollars and in Euros and to the extent of forgetting that he has those accounts?

“If he has such memory failure about the size of his number of accounts as to fail to declare them, you and I know that even ignorance is not an excuse in law. So, why are we being hypocritical?

“And at a certain level of responsibility, it’s not even about legal technicalities. It’s about the moral weight, the moral burden you carry.

“So, nobody should make us feel as though we are at the mercy of any other country.

“The future of Nigeria is in the hands of Nigerians and our laws are clear. Our laws are meant to be obeyed,” he said.

Oshiomhole added “If Nigerians thought that anybody other than the president and the vice president or a governor and deputy governor have immunity, it should have been so written into the constitution.

“I don’t understand what the noise is about.

“Some people say even if it is true, is this the proper timing? What is the best timing to prosecute a crime? Should we suspend criminal justice pending elections?

“Then, some people say you know, because of the very unique role or rather, very delicate role the judiciary has to play in settling elections issues, that is the more reason that people are worried about the timing.

“My question is, given that important role of the judiciary in times like this, is that the reason why you should allow a judge who has professed for breaching laws of the land, is that the reason to allow him to preside, to adjudicate over issues that have to do with fairness and justice?” he stated.

  • 2019 poll: I’m not afraid of federal might, says Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has declared that he is not afraid of the proverbial federal might in his 2019 re-election bid, saying that he will continue to defend his people, come what may.

Ortom, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Monday, however said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should be held responsible if anything untoward happened to him.

The governor accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of persecuting him since he defected from the governing APC to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“If I die today, the Federal Government should be held responsible because they are planning to eliminate me. I am not going to stop. I will continue to defend my people.

“I know that I am being persecuted because the cabal don’t like me. They do all kind of things. EFCC has been chasing me and my staff for the past 10 months. And I have not done anything wrong that they have been chasing me all over the place. Persecution is so much; there are threats on my life”.

According to him, overbearing influence of political godfathers in the APC was responsible for his inability to pay pensions and salary arrears of workers before January 2018, saying however that he has been able to offset the arrears the moment he got the godfathers off his back.

He took a jibe at President Muhammadu Buhari over the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, saying the President might “not be aware” of the development.

The governor said, “Is it the first time that Mr. President is not aware of something. When we were attacked and he directed the IGP to relocate to Benue State, but the man went to Nasarawa. And when the President came, we confronted him, he said was not aware. And there are many other things which Mr. President has not been aware of that you know.

“Even when the CJN was to be arraigned, was Mr. President aware? We were told by the Vice President, that Mr. President was not aware. Did you not hear him? Or did you not read it on the pages of newspapers?

“So, maybe this one too, he is not aware. Because I have not met him one-on-one. I want to assume that he may not be aware. I am not holding brief for him. So, you journalists too can help us get him to be aware.

“That is the challenge we have. But you heard our mother of the nation; Mrs. Aisha Buhari came out crying that the husband is no longer ruling. That it is the cabal. And we men should talk. If I undress now, you will see that I am a man.

“So we must talk. That is the point I am making. I am doing it in support of our mother, the First Lady. It is a clarion call that all of us should stand up and chase that cabal away because we did not elect any cabal in that Villa.”
