  • I’ve delivered on my campaign promises, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday declared that his administration has delivered on its promises made to Nigerians in 2015.

Buhari spoke at the old Banquet Hall of the State House during the presentation of the book, “Nigeria on Firmer Ground, Towards Lasting Peace & Progress,” put together by the Presidential Media Team.

According to him, his administration is ready to do more by taking Nigeria to the NEXT LEVEL of development, prosperity, peace and stability.

He said “Coming just a week to the commencement of the 2019 general elections, there is no doubt that today’s event is very significant as the electorate is being offered more insights into the achievements of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration since we came to office in 2015.

“From the accounts of all the earlier speakers and what can be gleaned from the book, supported by verifiable facts and figures on projects and programmes implemented in almost every State of the Federation, it is clear that our administration has delivered substantially on our campaign promises.

“Riding on the wave of the CHANGE Agenda which we anchored on making positive impact in the three priority areas of security, economy and fighting corruption, I am convinced that we have made real progress and we are poised to do more by taking Nigeria to the NEXT LEVEL of development, prosperity, peace and stability.”

He went on “We are also poised to make life-changing progress in infrastructure, agriculture, social investments, and much more.

“From returning the economy to sustainable growth, degrading Boko Haram terrorists, boldly confronting the monster called corruption, history will remember this Administration as one that did what it promised and charted the path for a future of which we can all be proud.

“Going round the country in the past weeks on our campaign stops, I believe that our message emphasizing the need to stick to the winning team and not risk returning our country to irresponsible leadership, at any level of government, has resonated with the people.

“Their stock-in-trade is the avaricious plunder of our national assets and resources, and ordinary Nigerians are quite aware of their conduct in government.

“Our simple message to the Nigerian electorate is to give us four more years to build and consolidate on the foundations we have painstakingly laid so that we shall all reap the benefits of what we have planted in all sectors of our society.”

He said that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government has proved to be better manager of resources.

“We have proved better managers of our national assets and the limited resources available to us than past administrations, and we are committed to entrenching higher levels of accountability and transparency in the years ahead.

“As the nation prepares to give her citizens the opportunity to choose their leaders and representatives in the next few weeks, I urge all Nigerians to exercise their civic duty in an atmosphere of peace and security.”

He urged the youths not to allow themselves to be used by desperate politicians in the coming elections.

“Let us remember that elections will come and go, but we need a country in which to live. I am appealing to our youths: do not allow yourselves to be used by desperate politicians to violate the sanctity of the ballot and endanger our country.

“I assure you that the security agencies will protect you as you go out to vote without fear of violence or molestation.”

The President also commended the Presidential Media Team, the Buhari Media Organisation and other stakeholders for helping Nigerians to understand more of what this administration has done by producing the book, and presenting it to the public.

At the book presentation the National leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said that unlike other past leaders who were helping friends, President Buhari decided to work for the masses.

Tinubu, who was represented by Dele Alake, said “Buhari’s government took a different approach. People have murmured his inaugural address statement that “I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody” was aimed at me.

“Well, I find that strange indeed as those words were what I wanted him to say and wanted him to be.

“Unlike others whose stated policy is to enrich friends, Buhari took the nobler position that it was better to help the millions of hard-working but anonymous common folk instead of maintaining the national economy in the status of a festive party for a select few.

“True to his word, President Buhari has achieved a lot in his time in office despite our strained financial condition due to shrunken oil prices.

“Through focused policies, the Buhari administration has set the foundation for enduring growth of a diversifying economy not unduly reliant on an increasingly unreliable foreign appetite for crude oil.

“Let our economy stand on its own feet and not be overly beholden to motorists in New York City, London or Paris. I believe such sovereign economics are, in the long term, the soundest economics.” he said

He added “The President has managed to return Nigeria to the path of growth. Our foreign exchange reserves have been rebuilt. Inflation has been brought under control and our balance of trade steadily improved.

“These macroeconomic indicators point to an economy that, under the watchful eye of the President, is steadily recovering.

“But we must also recognise that positive economic statistics mean little to ordinary Nigerians striving to put food on their tables.

“Our party, the APC is a party of compassion and progressivism. Despite the relatively meagre revenues of this government compared to prior governments, the Buhari administration set out to do what the other governments cared not to do. That is to give direct care to the nation’s poorest and most put upon citizens.

“Our primary school feeding program and monthly stipends for the poor feed millions, enable children to remain in school, and have energized local economies by creating scores of thousands of jobs while providing a measure of economic security to our poorest citizens.” he stated

The former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, who reviewed the book, described those equating the TraderMoni programme of the Federal Government and the Bank of Industry to vote-buying as fools.

Calling a revolving loan given to the market women to aid their petty trading vote-buying, he said, was nothing but foolery.

According to him, the government had said before its implementation across the country, that the fund was approved by the National Assembly.

He also described the current Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, as a conspirator frustrating President Muhammadu Buhari’s return for second term.

Osoba told the President, “Sir, on June 12, 1984, you appointed me the  Manager Director of Daily Times and Tony Momoh as the  General Manager of Daily Times. Tony Momoh reviewed your mid-term from Daily Times; I am now reviewing your four years.

“I keep telling people that if anybody fails under Buhari, it must be his fault and he must be careless person because when you appointed, throughout the tenure of Buhari, he never invited myself or Momoh, or interfere in whatsoever it was we were doing in DailyTimes.

“I believe that God gave us Buhari to restore the years that corruption has eaten deep into our fabrics.

“Quoting Abba Kyari, funds that were meant to support our soldiers were diverted; Contractors, godfathers and politicians helped themselves to millions and as a result many of those on the frontline and those they were supposed to protect were killed.

“These were all the problems inherited by this administration by those who are seeking to return to power, God forbid

“Still quoting Abba Kyari, he said that in the boom years, from 2000 to 2015 almost nothing was saved and almost nothing was invested.

“So, when the oil price crashed in 2016, we had no spare capacity to boost production and check the shock.

“It is my strong belief that God gave us Buhari, a man of towering integrity to restore the years that locust of corruption has eaten deep into our fabrics. May we never go back to those years.”

Osoba went on “Yesterday, the Alake of Egba Land took the rail from Lagos to Abeokuta; for me 61 years ago from  Abeokuta to Oshogbo. 1958. Mr President I am going to present you a picture of me in a train 61 years ago, 1958.

“The train went dead; we in Yoruba land are always with you because your philosophy is same with our political father,  Awolowo whose philosophy is welfarism and egalitarianism. We will massively support you in Ogun State and Yoruba land in general.” he stated

According to him, in the 2003 election (under Obasanjo), the total votes cast for the President was 1.6m while as governors, they got a total of about one million.

He said that the court described what happened in Ogun State as criminal.

“It is not my words but that of the court.” he said

In other serious nations, he said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo should have been impeached.

He said that the government could not account for the 600000 votes.

The National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole noted that Obasanjo destroyed the Nigeria textile industry during his tenure.

He wondered why the former President would allow his friends to be importing into the country with duty-free while prohibiting certain categories of textiles.

Oshiomhole also faulted his policy of allowing those with rice millers waiver to import certain quantity of rice.

He said that he had no apology to those complaining that things are hard in the country, stressing that there must be pain in getting the country back on track.

The former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, who unveiled the book, said that it is a compendium which contains the summary of the activities of the current administration.

Stressing that the easiest thing that doesn’t require intelligence is criticism, he urged critics to get a copy of the book in order to get enlightened.

To Buhari, he said, “No Nigerian has the capacity to pull genuine crowd like you.”

According to him, there is need to give the President another four to complete the good work he has started.

  • Buhari’s rural projects excite Bayelsa communities

Timi Shadrack from Okunbiri community, Sagbama, Bayelsa State, no longer drinks contaminated river water. She goes to a solar-powered water project to fetch her water. Water from the solar-powered borehole is potable. Therefore, she no longer bothers about water-borne diseases, which were rife when the river surrounding her community was the only source of water.

But Timi did not know how the water project came to her community. Though there is a signpost indicating the source of the project, she is not literate enough to read the writings on the signboard. But she was excited when she was told that the project came from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari brought the project through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It was executed under the rural development component of the ministry. And the Minister of State, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, who hails from Bayelsa State, is in charge of the projects.

“I am happy that the Federal Government remembered our community for these rural projects,” Timi said. “We never knew that the Federal Government can solve our local problems for us. We had no water on this community before. We drank from the river. River water is not clean but we had no choice. We suffered diseases. But now, since this water project was done in our community, we no longer suffer such diseases,” she added.

The borehole is not the only rural project in Okunbiri. Lokpobiri’s ministry lit up the community with solar streetlight. Alex Tontonye, who is the Vice-Chairman of the community, is happy with the streetlight. He said the solar streetlight chased darkness out of the community.

He said: “Heineken Lokpobiri has been able to bring this solar light in our community. We are grateful because we have never experienced this kind of project before. The water works is also another laudable project. We go there to fetch water.

“We are happy with what we have seen on ground. The projects met us at our point of need. There is no more darkness in our community. We need more of the light too. We are also begging the government to connect our community to road.”

The minister and his team toured the rural communities in the state to inspect grassroots projects. Along the same axis, they visited Toru-Ebeni and Akaddei communities. The ministry repeated streetlight and water projects in Toru-Ebeni and Akaddei communities. The people of the coastal communities were happy as they trooped out en-masse to receive the team.

The minister and his team inspected a 15km rural road being executed by the ministry. The road is designed to link three communities of Toru-Ebeni, Akaddei and Ayama-Ebeni. The road begins at the Toru-Ebeni Bridge and goes round the three communities. When completed, it will facilitate commerce, farming, reduce hours and transport cost the people currently spend on water transport.

The contract was awarded to a local contractor, Gloria Itoku. The contractor, who was in the minister’s team, said the project was part of the rural development component of the ministry. She said the project was awarded below N1bn.

On the progress of the road project, she said: “We are still on the earth work and hopefully in two weeks’ time, we will start the stone basing. We hope to complete the job in two months. The contract sum is less than a billion. We have done eight kilometers sand filling.

“We have a peculiar weather here. It rains. But by March or April we should be through with the road. Our terrain is the only challenge. We use too much sand to construct road here.”

Itoku described as a welcome development, the decision of the ministry to award the job to her local firm. “This is the local content we are talking about. We are very happy. It is a welcome development,” she said.

A youth from Toru-Ebeni, Charles Edure, praised Buhari and the minster for the rural development projects. He was particularly happy about the road construction, the water project and solar streetlights in his community.

He said: “We are happy about the development that is going on in the community. There is massive construction from the bridge point to three communities. We also have the solar light and solar water in the community.

“We can see the dividends of democracy under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari through our minister. The road will boost the communities economically, socially and otherwise. It will attract more development to the community.”

Lokpobiri took time to inspect and inaugurate projects in each of the communities he visited. He drank from the solar boreholes to prove that the water was potable. He also inaugurated electrification projects in Sagbama and Ebelebiri. He seized the opportunity to solicit votes for Buhari and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “One of the key projects we do in the ministry is rural roads, another one is rural electrification and the other one is rural water supply.”

  • Buhari, Osinbajo under divine protection, says APC

All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice Yemi Osinbajo are enjoying divine protective shield from God.

The party added that the divine protection has was responsible for the Osinbajo’s narrow escape from death.

Patron, Buhari Campaign Organisation Mallam Yakub Gobir said this in Afon, Asa local government area of Kwara state at a sensitization rally, adding that the duo and all other candidates of APC would emerge victorious in the forthcoming elections.

Mallam Gobir, APC governorship aspirant in the state said the party is ready to win at the polls

Gobir added that “in terms of previous elections I will say our preparedness is at the highest point it has never been. So we are prepared.”

On the reception accorded his team, the Wazirn Hausa said: “The reception is fantastic. This is not my first time of coming to Asa.

This local government is very important. This is the first local government that results would be announced.

“The second thing is that it is a very rural local government in Kwara central and there are great distances between polling units.

“People had to travel between seven and eight kilometers to get to their polling units. From previous elections, historically Asa local government is where a lot of rigging and electoral malpractices take place, because it is remote and hard to reach.

“People are able to do a lot of manipulation. That is why in our preparedness to end campaigns for the forthcoming elections, I have chosen that the council is a key area. The people you are seeing here today will make Victory happen in this month’s election. We will deliver victory to President Buhari beyond his expectations and also for all other APC candidates.

“I therefore plead with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agents to pay special attention to INEC.

“INEC in the state to let the elections to be free and fair. People’s will should be allowed to prevail.”

Also APC Kwara central senatorial chair Abdullateef Alakawa said that APC has become a movement in the state.

“It is very obvious that APC is very well prepared to win the elections in the state. APC is not just a political party in Kwara central, it has become a movement.

“That is why there is serious mobilisation of our people. Our people are enthusiastic and very much at alert for the monumental transformation that will happen in the state.

Our people are ready to effect a change from a situation of stagnation to progress. They are ready to do that through a democratic process.

“This local government is an integral part of Kwara central. Come February 16 that readiness of our people will manifest for the epoch making event of changing government and reaffirming their support, belief and confidence in the party and its leadership at the national level and in bringing a true government of change to our state.

  • Buhari fulfills campaign promise on fight against corruption — Minister

The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, says that President Muhammadu Buhari has fulfilled his campaign promise on the fight against corruption in the country.

Shittu made the assertion at the N-power Volunteers National Rally tagged, “ #Rave For Buhari # Energising the FCT 4 #Next Level, held on Wednesday in Abuja.

The minister said the ongoing anti-corruption crusade of President Buhari had restored the lost glory of Nigeria in the eyes of nations and repositioned the country for better.

He said before the inception of Buhari administration all Federal Ministries Department and Agencies (MDAs) operated multiples accounts which made it easier for stealing and looting of public treasury.

“ But as soon as President Buhari came to power he gave directive for the migration of all MDAs account into Treasury Single Account (TSA) to ensure that government has total control of its resources.

“ TSA has help government to save more money for infrastructural development and social investment programmes that we all gather here to celebrate,“ he said.

Shittu said that within one administration, Buhari has engaged more than 500,000 youths in N-power, saying PDP never thoughts of initiating something like N-power throughout its 16 years in power.

The minister said that throughout the 16 years of PDP led administration, they had not invested in infrastructural development like during the three and half years of Buhari.

According to him, in 2017 alone, Buhari led Federal Government has spend no fewer than 275 billion on federal roads constructions.

The minister also said that President Buhari led government had improve electricity supply from 3000 megawatt to 7000, saying “PDP had wasted 16 billion dollars and there is no power.“

Shittu, therefore, urged electorate to ensure that Buhari return re-elected in Feb. 16, for sustainable progress and development of the country.

Speaking on behalf of the N-Power beneficiaries, Mr Dapil Samuel, a visually impaired graduate from Mangu Local Government Area in Plateau State, thanked Buhari for initiating social investment programme.

“ N-Power has helped to enhance my health and free me from discrimination I was going through in the past.
“ We pray for the success of President Buhari in the forthcoming elections.“

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the rally was attended by N-power beneficiaries from the 36 states and FCT. (NAN)

  • Buhari restates commitment to develop Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Lafia, Nasarawa state restated his administration’s commitment to the overall development of Nigeria.

Buhari stated this while addressing the All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters in Nasarawa state in continuation of the party’s presidential campaign rally.

He said that the administration had performed creditably well in its development strides in the last three and a half years.

According to the President, the administration has delivered on its three-pronged campaign promises of fighting corruption, revitalising the economy and tackling insecurity.

He disclosed that the APC-led government had succeeded in terms of security as the Boko Haram insurgents have been degraded and have resorted to attacking soft targets because of pressures from the armed forces.

Buhari noted that Nigerians in the North Eastern part of the country would appreciate the administration’s effort on security more as most of those displaced for so long had returned to their homes.

On agriculture, the president said that Nigerians have witnessed bumper harvest in recent times as a result of government’s attention to the sector through the provision of fertiliser and other farm inputs.

He also maintained that the administration was on course to winning the fight against corruption, adding that all the looted funds would be recovered and used for the development of the country.

He, therefore, urged the people to vote for him and all APC candidates in order to consolidate on the gains so far recorded.

Gov. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa state lauded Buhari for restoring the hope of the common man through effective governance since assumption of office in 2015.

Al-Makura highlighted the landmark achievements of the President in Nasarawa state ranging from power, roads and other infrastructures.

He assured the President and APC of the total support of the people of Nasarawa state during the forthcoming elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Buhari officially presented the party flag to Alhaji Abdullahi Sule, the APC governorship candidate in the state. (NAN)

  • Buhari appeals for understanding on minimum wage

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed for understanding of Nigerian workers as the Federal Government attempts to address the pressing issue of a new national minimum wage.

Buhari, represented by Mr. Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made the appeal at the 12th National Delegates Conference of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday in Abuja.

The theme of the two-day Conference is “Towards a Decade of Activism for the Promotion of Labour Unity, National Rebirth and Development.”

According to Mr. President, Government is determined to attain the decent work agenda, which involves opportunities to works that are productive and deliver fair income, security in the work place and social protection for families.

“Government appeals for the continued understanding of workers in attempt to address the pressing issue of minimum wage.”

The president noted that the government inaugurated a Technical Advisory Committee recently “to develop and advise government on how to successfully actualise the objective of seamless implementation of the impending wage increase.”

The Committee is also “to identify new revenue sources as well as areas of existing expenditure from where some savings could be made and to augment present Federal Government’s revenue framework in order to fund the wage increase.”

It will also “propose a work plan and modalities for the implementation of salary increase in a way that minimises any inflation impact and ensure that it does not lead to any job losses,’’ he said.

Buhari, however, assured NLC of government’s unalloyed support and cooperation towards its struggle for better workers’ welfare, which would invariably enhance productivity and economic growth in the country.

Mr. President further said that the present administration regarded NLC as a partner in progress and reassured the Congress of the commitment of the administration to workers’ welfare.

“This is evidenced by the numerous programmes and policies that have been initiated by this present administration in promoting the interest and well-being of our workforce.

“This administration is also committed to addressing other issues that are still pending,” he added.

According to him, the Labour movement can be said without fear of contradiction to have lived up to the expectations of its teeming members by “continually protecting, defending and promoting the rights, well-being and interest of all workers and affiliates trade unions.

“It has played significant role with the promotion of unity among workers and constantly engaged government on national rebirth and development. This has been a commendable endeavour,’’ he said.

Earlier, the NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, said that organised labour would resist any attempt to sell national assets

Wabba said that evidence around the country showed that privatisation had not done the nation any good as majority of government owned enterprises privatised were not functional.

He said what had happened in the past was that the enterprises were under-priced and sold to friends and associates, who stripped them of the assets, leaving them comatose and unproductive.

“Since the privatisation of electricity distribution, Nigerians are yet to see the fulfilment of promises of efficient service delivery.

  • No gang up against Buhari will stand, Says Presidency

The Presidency on Sunday again declared that no amount of gang up against President Muhammadu Buhari towards the the Presidential elections will stand.
According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, the ongoing gang up will fail like it did in 2015.
He said “The Peoples Democratic Party is hiding in the bunker of ethnicity to avoid their inevitable defeat but that won’t change anything.
“The current scenario resembles efforts to stop Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 by the same characters. It is an effort to repeat the old experiment that failed is 2015.
“They failed to stop him from coming to power in 2015 and they will fail yet again on February 16th.
“If all these groups are ganging up against one person, that is President Buhari, it tells you who is the formidable candidate in the election.
“This gang up they forged, one more time will change nothing. It is for the people to decide.” he stated
  • CJN Susension: Buhari acted constitutionally – Wamakko

GIVEN the increasing conflicting comments and reactions trailing the Presidential suspension of the CJN, Walter Onnoghen, on his part too, Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum,  Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko on Friday said based on the directive of the Code of Conduct Tribunal(CCT), President Muhammadu Buhari did not breach the nation’s constitution by suspending the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Senator Wamakko, who represents Sokoto North Senatorial District made the remark in Goronyo town, headquarters of Goronyo local government of Sokoto state during the flag off of the All Progressives Congress (APC ), campaigns.

According to the lawmaker, ” President Muhammadu Buhari has not in anyway flouted  the constitution of Nigeria by suspending Onnoghen.

”  The President has promised to sustain his ongoing  fight against corruption and the suspended CJN is being tried by the CCT, for acting in deviance  to the nation’s constitution.

” The President is not corrupt and he has promised to prosecute any person found to be corrupt and I strongly support him, anybody found wanting in this direction , including myself, should be prosecuted .”

Wamakko,  who is also the Chairman Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education  recalled that, in 2015, former President Goodluck Jonathan unilaterally removed  the present Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who was then Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, from Office, removed the then President , Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, from Office, as well the then Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun from Office , among others .

Senator Wamakko also recalled that, Senate President Bukola Saraki, has removed the Kwara State Chief Judge, from Office, when he was the Governor of the state .

” They all did unilaterally and nobody raised any eye brow . All those who are now disparaging the President for doing his constitutional duty are unpatriotic, sadistic and dastardly, ” Senator Wamakko,  added.

However, in his campaign message at the rally, the immediate past Governor of the state also promised that, by God’s grace, the endemic water scarcity now plaguing the state would be history within the first three months, if the All Progressives Congress  ( APC ), Gubernatorial Candidate,  Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto and his running mate, Alhaji Faruku Malami Yabo,  are elected

Accordingly, Wamakko who is the party’s leader in the state also vowed that, the current  wasteful and fraudulent  education levy would be scrapped, while all the deductions made would be refunded to the workers by the incoming APC administration,  In sha Allahu.

” I am therefore appealing to the people of the state to come out and massively vote all APC candidates,  at all levels, ” he urged.

Taking his turn at the well attended rally, the gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto also promised to restore sanity into the state and local governments civil services , with adequate funds for them to function effectively to ensure the current infrastructure deficit experienced under the PDP led government was reversed.

” It has caused gross draw back in the state. We will ensure transformation that will stand the basic and secondary requirement of our people especially in the provision of infrastructure which is the basis for physical development”, he explained.

The State Chairman of the  party,  Alhaji Isa Sadiq Achida,  the Chairman,  Sokoto East Senatorial District Campaign Committee,  Senator Bello Jibril Gada and the Chairman of the party in Goronyo local government,  Alhaji Kabiru Sarkin Fulani, all promised that, people in the state will massively vote for its candidates,  at all levels.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 3300 members of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), defected to the APC during the rally.

Prominent among them were the Father of a former Chairman of Goronyo local government and a chieftain of the PDP,  Alhaji Ya’u Isa Mai-Alewa, Alhaji Isa, and his younger brother ,  Alhaji Kabiru Isa Mai-Alewa.

Spokesmen of the defectors , Alhaji Yusuf Garba  Goronyo, said they moved into the APC sequel to the justice and fairness prevalent in it .

The Chairman of the State Campaign Council,  Alhaji Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi assured them of equal and fair treatment, just like the other older members of the party.

  • Imo governorship race: It’s Orlu zone versus others

Last week in Owerri, the Imo state capital, President Muhammadu Buhari, while addressing a campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC), caused a stir when he told the gathering, made up mostly APC members and supporters, to vote for any candidate of their choices “across party lines”. This statement was immediately interpreted by many to mean that the president is not in support of the governorship candidate of his party, APC, in the state, Senator Hope Uzodimma.

They argued that President Buhari made the statement in order to buoy the chances of Uche Nwosu, the son-in-law of the state governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, and governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, AA. Okorocha is strongly opposed the candidacy of Uzodimma and has publicly vowed to stop him from emerging as his successor. Although the presidency has since debunked the insinuation that Buhari is anti Uzodimma’s candidacy, the controversy generated by his statement on Tuesday, January 29 2019 at Dan Anyiam stadium, Owerri has lingered on.

Reports have it that the Nwosu/ Okorocha camp has been jubilating since then, apparently in the belief that the president’s statement was a veiled support for Nwosu. It is gathered  that there are also celebrations in some quarters in the other three major political parties vying for the office of the state governor, notably, PDP APGA and ACCORD. However, majority of Imo indigenes, together with most keen watchers of the political terrain in the state, point out that President Buhari’s statement  has further brought to the fore the debate over the propriety of another fellow from Orlu zone (where both Uzodimma and Nwosu come from) still emerging as the governor of the state at the forth coming general elections.

It is the view of a vast majority of citizens of the state that the office this time around should go to either of Owerri or Okigwe zone, given that Orlu has held the position for 16 years since the beginning of the current democratic dispensation in 1999. Save between 2007 and 2011 when Okigwe held the position through Governor Ikedi Ohakim, Orlu zone, many argue, has “monopolized”. The predecessor and successor  of Ohakim, Achike Udenwa (1999-2007) and Rochas Okorocha (2011-2019) both come from the zone. The agitation for power shift in the state is not new but it has gotten to a crescendo in the current election season; with leaders in both Owerri and Okigwe zones apparently determined to stop at nothing to ensure that Orlu does not take back the office this time around.

Not unexpectedly, there are quite a number of influential and highly respected leaders in Orlu zone who are also standing firm in support of the move to end the zone’s apparent monopoly of the office. The arrow head of this tendency is a former governor of the state, Chief Achike Udenwa, himself a native of Orlu zone. Udenwa has repeatedly argued in favour of the office of the governor getting out of Orlu. At a recent campaign rally of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Chief Udenwa told the audience that “any fellow from Owerri or Okigwe zone who votes for an Orlu governorship candidate is a fool”.

The language may appear too strong but many observers believe that it captures the mood among a vast majority of the people in the two areas – Owerri and Okigwe. Incidentally, Udenwa is a beneficiary of a deliberate policy of rotating the office of the governor among the three zones of Orlu, Okigwe and Owerri, beginning from Orlu in 1999. As a matter of fact, the story, which every school boy in Imo would easily real out, is that in the primary election of the PDP in 1999, a candidate from Owerri zone came first but that the then leaders of the party decided to give the ticket to Udenwa in order to kick start a charter of equity they had envisaged would be strickly adhered to in the course of the new republic.

The choice of Orlu zone for the beginning of the new experiment was informed by the fact that in the immediate past two democratic dispensations (the second republic and the hybrid third republic), both Okigwe and Owerri zones had produced the state chief executives: Okigwe through Sam Mbakwe (1979-1983) and Owerri through Evan Enwerem. To underscore the resolve of political leaders in the state to cede the office of the governor to Orlu zone in 1999, even the then All Peoples Party (APP), PDP’s only rival, also chose its governorship candidate from Orlu zone in the person of Ezekiel Izuogu.

Another chieftain of the PDP in Orlu zone who is also for the office of the state governor moving out of the area is Chief Greg Mbadiwe, former Nigerian Ambassador to Congo Brazaville. Mbadiwe, who was a frontline contender for the office in the match towards the current republic (he contested with Udenwa and others, including the current governor, Rochas Okorocha), says he is supporting the candidate of his party, Emeka Ihedioha, who happens to come from Owerri zone and that “if that gives credence to the argument in favour of zoning and equity, I would like to be part of it”.

Similarly, a former chairman of the PDP in the state, Dr. Alex Obi, is of the view that “it is totally wrong and against moral judgment for the office of the Imo state governor to return to Orlu zone in 2019. Orlu has had it for 16 years at a stretched. It is only proper that another zone be given a chance, this time around Owerri zone. Okigwe has held it for a total period of eight years through Mbakwe and Ohakim but Owerri has held it for only 30 months. Power sharing is important for stability and apart from its intrinsic value, it is necessary for development. If we ignore power sharing, we will be putting the stability of the state at great jeopardy”

However, another political leader in Owerri zone, Captain David Mbamara (Rrtd), himself a former governorship candidate, holds a view that is remarkably different from that of Obi. Mbamara agrees that the office of the governor has to move out of Orlu but not necessarily to Owerri zone as prescribed by Obi. The retired army officer is of the view that the office should go to Okigwe zone in 2019 to enable the area do a total of eight years. Reminded that Mbakwe and Ohakim had already given Okigwe zone a total of eight years, Mbamara said it is wrong to bring in Mbakwe’s tenure into the current calculations.

According to him, “the critical period being considered is that of between 1999 and now or at worst back to the Enwerem days”. He explains that Mbakwe governed the old Imo state which included the current Abia state and part of the present-day Ebonyi state and during which period the Imo charter of equity had not yet come into existence. “As far as some of us are concerned, it is Okigwe zone that is at the receiving end. The zone was unjustly deprived of doing a second term to catch up with Orlu. The same Orlu has done another eight years. I think the most sensible thing to do in order to correct the anomaly is to allow Okigwe zone to do another term of four years. Then it comes to Owerri, my own zone”.

Another indigene of Owerri zone, and US-based communications expert, Prof. Anthony Njoku, is of the view that the cry of marginalization by Owerri zone is “orchestrated”. He says: “if we are to be sincere to our selves, Owerri zone has benefited the most in the current democratic dispensation. Between 1999 and now, it has produced a senate president, a deputy speaker of the House of Representatives and four ministers. This is aside the fact that Owerri, the state capital, and its environs have a chunk of the physical infrastructural development in the state. Almost all the adjoining towns and villages are turning into urban areas.

Go to Naze up to Agbala in Owerri North; go to Owerri west which habours two federal tertiary institutions and see the transformations in these areas. The cost of land in these areas has risen by more than 300% in the last ten years. That’s an obvious advantage compared with Okigwe and Orlu zones. We all agree that the office of the governor should rotate and that it will come to Owerri zone is as sure as that tomorrow will come. What we should do in the time being is to have an open mind and show less desperation”.

However, another chieftain of the PDP in Okigwe zone, Dr. Fabian Ihekweme, is of a contrary view. Ihekweme, leader of the breakaway New PDP in the state, argues that the idea of zoning has not been properly articulated and that as such, the state has to start all over again by going back Orlu zone where it all began from. Incidentally, Ihekweme led his breakaway group into the APC at the January 29, 2019 rally. But if these men are seen as talking out of partisan interest, the same cannot be said of Mr. Kanayo Esinulo, a veteran journalist, writer and acclaimed commentator on public affairs.

Esinulo is of the view that “for the sake of equity, the governorship should go outside Orlu zone after residing there for 16 years in the current dispensation”. Continuing, Esinulo, who was the chief press secretary to the late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu- Ojukwu, and was in exile with the Biafran leader for ten years said: “mind you, I come from Orlu but I have always tried to be just and fair and remain loyal to certain values the good people of Imo state share”. Throughout the length and breadth of the state, there is an overwhelming argument against an Orlu governor in 2019 but at the same time a lot of fears are being entertained over the matter.

These fears stem mostly from the fact that the political establishments at both the state and federal levels seem not to be enamoured by the call for equity in the state. The first to swim against the tide is the state governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha who is pushing his so-in-law, Nwosu to succeed him. In the count down to the party primaries last year, Okorocha, worked very hard to Nwosu emerge as the governorship candidate of the APC but a coalition of stakeholders in the party, which was battling with the governor over sundry issues, resisted him.

The coalition, which was made up mostly of prominent politicians from both Owerri and Okigwe zones, had as its ultimate objective not only to ensure that the governor’s son-in-law did not emerge as the APC’s governorship candidate, but also that no other fellow from Orlu zone took the ticket. Among these politicians were Okorocha’s deputy, Eze Madumere, who had become estranged from him over the same issue of succession, Ifeanyi Araraume, who was vigorously pursuing the party’s governorship ticket, Osita Izunaso, the then national organizing secretary of the party and Senator Ben. Uwajumogu, another former ally of Okorocha but whom later fell out with him.

At a point, however, Senator Hope Uzodimma, representing Orlu zone (Imo West) in the national assembly, joined the coalition but he was not quite visible, amid insinuations in certain quarters that he was in cahoots with Okorocha to help the latter install his son-in-law in exchange for a return ticket to the senate. Thus, with such an array of personalities, there were high hopes among the people that Okorocha’s plans were bound to fail. But that came only by half. The coalition succeeded in preventing Okoracha’s son-in-law from clinching the APC’s governorship ticket but it failed to ensure that another Orlu zone fellow did not grab it.

Instead, Senator Uzodimma, after a big tussle with Okorocha, took the ticket. Undaunted, however, the governor took his boy and a motley of strategic stakeholders in the APC to another party, the Action Alliance (AA), where Nwosu promptly grabbed a governorship ticket. The governor and his son-in-law have since transmogrified the hitherto unknown AA into a party to watch as far as the 2019 general elections are concern. Today, the party boasts of an avalanche of state-of-the-art vehicles branded in its name and campaign images and exotic bill boards ubiquitously placed at strategic positions across the state.

As a matter of fact, not a few believe, rightly or wrongly, that Okorocha may well succeed in his plan to impose Nwosu on the state as its next governor, regardless of the noticeable exploits of the candidates of the other parties, notably PDP, ACCORD, APGA and APC where Uzodimma is equally mounting a formidable campaign. As the official candidate of the APC, which controls the federal government, Uzodimma certainly enjoys a lot of advantage. Against the back drop of insinuations that the APC has concluded plains to take advantage of its incumbency to rig the presidential election in its favour, not a few believe that Uzodimma will automatically emerge as governor once President Buhari is pronounced winner of the February 16 2019 election; despite Okorocha’s repeated vows that Uzodimma can only become the governor over his, Okorocha’s, “dead body”.

Even so, the determination of Okorocha to produce his successor himself is no less worrisome, in as much as many observers think it is a tall order. For many, therefore,  what this mean in effect is that it would be naïve to completely dismiss the possibility of the next governor of the state still coming from Orlu zone, either through Nwosu of AA or Uzodimma of the APC. Before last Tuesday, the worry in several quarters in the state was the apparent connivance of the presidency and the APC national leadership over some of the antics of the Okorocha-Nwosu camp. The latter had nearly succeeds in creating the impression that the presidency is backing Nwosu. The state is inundated with bill boards and posters carrying the photographs of Nwosu and that of President Buhari together.

Although the Uzodimma camp also has similar bill boards and posters, they do not match the ubiquity of that of Nwosu; fueling insinuations in some quarters, especially among anti Uzodimma elements, that Okorocha might have gotten assurances from some powerful quarters in Abuja that Buhari will eventually back Nwosu, a belief fueled by the event of last Tuesday regardless of the fact that at the same venue, the APC National chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, announce that the party is not in alliance with any other.

As things stand, there is mounting anxiety in the state over what some observers see as an apparent insensitivity on the part of both the presidency and the national leadership of the APC to fears among the people of Okigwe and Owerri zones over the possible emergence of another governor from Orlu zone. It is difficult to say what precise actions the far majority of Imolites, who hanker for a change, may take but the tension arising from the current situation is quite palpable.

However, it is not all despondency. Some well meaning citizens of the state are working towards a strategic alliance between Owerri and Okigwe together with some elements in Orlu to ensure that the office those not return to Orlu. Prominent in this is the ongoing talks among some leaders in Owerri zone to draft the immediate past governor of the state, Ikedi Ohakim, into an arrangement that will have him elected as the next governor so as to pave way for a fellow from Owerri zone 2023. Ohakim is from Okiwge zone.

Highly reliable sources revealed to this newspaper that some notable leaders in Owerri zone have decided to back Ohakim in his bid to return to the office he was schemed out from in 2011. It was learnt that the Owerri leaders came to this decision after realizing that the most visible governorship candidate from the zone, Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP, is lacking in acceptability across the state.

Ihedioha’s candidacy is suffering a setback in Owerri zone and even right in Mbaise where he comes from. The dusts raised by the October 1, 2018 governorship primaries is yet to settle as Senator Samuel Anyanwu is still insisting that he was manipulated out of the primary election. Only a few days ago, the Supreme Court ruled against an appeal by Ihedioha for a discontinuation of the case at the state high court. What this means, according to observers, is that Ihedioha may well fly the flag of the party but he may not enjoy the support of members of the Senator Anyanwu camp. Incidentally, the breakaway New PDP which joined the APC at the Owerri rally last Tuesday is made up mostly of supporters of Senator Anyanwu.

It is in a bid to forestall the possible emergence of either Nwosu or Uzodimma, sources reveal, that some Owerri leaders decided to go into this strategic alliance with Ohakim and ensure that he succeeds in his return bid. The attraction is that since Ohakim has only one more term of four years to do, he will prepare to handover to Owerri zone after his tenure in 2023.

Sources revealed that Owerri zone leaders believe that their plan will get the blessing of their Okigwe counterparts, the final calculation being that with the coming together of Owerri and Okigwe zones, along with the cooperation of elements in Orlu zone who are against the emergence of another Orlu zone fellow as governor, Ohakim stands shoulders high over Uzodimma and Nwosu.

Yet these remain mere strategies. Whether they will succeed or not lies in the bowel of time especially as the Orlu zone candidates and their supporters are also plotting their respective ways with almost the same level of determination. In the time being, however, one thing that is clear is that whoever emerges as the next governor of the state will face a Herculean task of restoring social and political harmony among a people that were hither to reputed as among the most peace -loving in the entire country.
