Malala to FG: Declare State of emergency in education sector

Pakistani rights activist, Malala Yousafzai, on Monday called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to declare State of emergency in Nigeria’s education sector.

She made the call at the end of closed door meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Malala, who survived being shot in the head by the Taliban for campaigning for girls’ education, had paid similar visit to former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.

She had campaigned for the freedom of schools girls abducted by Boko Haram from their school in Chibok, Borno State in 2014.

Speaking with journalists at the Villa, she said that she called for the state of emergency because education of boys and girls in Nigeria is very important.

She urged the Federal Government, states and local governments to work together and fashion out the modalities for the state of emergency.

She said: “It was a very good meeting. We had a fruitful discussion with his excellency, the Acting President.

“I highlighted on the need to scale up education, that the government should declare a state of emergency in education because education of girls and boys in Nigeria is important.

“The federal, state and local governments need to be united on this.” she added

According to her, she also spoke on the child right act.

She added “Secondly, the spending should be made public and thirdly, the Child Rights Act should be implemented in all states. I was really happy to hear positive response from the Acting President that they are happy with the suggestion of implementing emergency for education and that they are happy to work more on education and that they are united.

“I’m happy to hear positive responses from the Ministers as well that they are ensuring that education is prioritised in every girl and in every boy and education in Nigeria is given priority.

“In the morning, I met Chibok girls and I was very happy at what the Honourable minister is doing to support the Chibok girls. I’m really excited to see them going back to their homes and to their families and continuing their education. But I hope the other girls who are still under abduction of Boko Haram are released,” she said.

  • FG to deploy drones in aviation industry

FG to deploy drones in aviation industry

The Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika on Monday said that the Federal Government will explore the good uses of drones in the Nigeria aviation industry.

He made the remark at the end of closed door meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

President of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Olumuyiwa Benard Aliyu, was part of the delegation that met the Acting President on Nigeria’s hosting of symposium on remotely piloted aircraft system.

Sirika said “Nigeria is going to benefit immensely through this symposium. They have created awareness and we will use the outcome of the symposium to regulate more efficiently the use of unmanned air vehicles.

“We are not going to over regulate but for sure we will regulate so that we will remain safe and secure and then make the industry much more efficient.

“We will tap from the good uses of drones. We have seen during the symposium on how we can use drones to send blood samples, to rescue someone with heart attack or to deliver pizza or to take aerial photograph and so on.These are some of the benefits of unmanned vehicles

“We hope that by regulating we will eliminate the dangers. For example if one unmanned vehicle is capable of carrying loads, you could think of them carrying a kilogram or two of bomb, with GPS and remotely piloted from a bedroom it can go and be dropped somewhere.

“At this symposium we will share ideas and come up with solutions on the good uses of the drones and of course over the bad uses,” he said.

On the Acting President’s response, he said “He has one himself and has flying drones himself, he is very much conscious and aware and he gave us the support and guidance that we need. He even warned that we should not over regulate so that we will not send people away.”

Aliyu thanked the Acting President at Nigeria is hosting the symposium.

He said that he was also in the Villa to express appreciation tothe government for the investment and support that is givento aviation development in Nigeria, which is supporting development of aviation in Africa and globally.

He said “For Nigeria being a very responsible member of ICAO, I am also here to express the support that I still intend to continue to provide in this aviation development and to urge government to put aviation as the corner stone of the national development.”

  • Osinbajo to governors: Ensure safety of all Nigerians in your state

Osinbajo to governors: Ensure safety of all Nigerians in your state

…Bring to book those making hate speeches

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday urged State governors to take necessary steps to ensure safety of all Nigerians living in their states.

He made the call during consultative meeting with the 36 state governors, at old Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

The meeting followed the consultative meetings with leaders of thoughts and traditional rulers from the North and South East over increasing ethnic tension in the country.

Some Arewa youths recently gave Igbos ultimatum to leave the North on or before October 1st, 2017.

They were reacting to the May 30th sit-at-home order issued out to Igbos IPOB.

Osinbajo, on Wednesday harped on the right of any Nigerian to live in any part of the country.

While calling on the governors to resist playing politics with issue of security, he said that those making hate speeches should be brought to book.

He said: “We as a Federal Government are committed to working with the State governments in ensuring peace and stability in our country. I want to charge each and every one of us as top of the agenda for us is the peace and security of lives and properties of those who live within the borders of our states.

“The security of their lives and properties, every one of them and assuring them constantly that we are committed to ensuring that all Nigerians, wherever they may be from, can live within the borders of our states happily as brothers and sisters.” he said

He added “We must not allow the careless use of words, careless expressions that may degenerate into crisis. We are a people that like to talk and we express ourselves loudly but it is expected for us to recognise that it is those same words that can cause conflagration, that can unfortunately lead to calamity.

“We must be careful of how we express ourselves. What we have seen in recent times is that some of the languages used have tended to degenerate badly and I think that we must begin to speak up against some of these things and ensure that we protect our democracy and our nation from the hands of rhetorics that may just divide us.

“From all of the consultations we have had, all agreed on certain issues. We agreed that Nigeria’s unity should not be taken for granted. No one wants to see us go done the path of bloodshed or war.

“We also agreed on the permanency of the Nigerian constitution, that 1999 Constitution is the basis for our unity. It is the basis for the legal contract that exists between all of us. Our meetings were frank and open as I hope this will be, we were able to agree on most of the critical issues that were discussed and in most cases changed perceptions that may have been long embedded in their minds.

“We also agreed that under no circumstances should we condone hateful speeches and that government should take all steps necessary to bring to book all those who preach violence, in particular the kind of expressions of dissent that can cause violence.

“We also agreed that we need to do more to engage our youth productively, create some jobs, and multiply the economic opportunities available. More importantly we agreed on the need for leaders to speak out forcefully to counter divisive speech or any kind of woe mongering, we agreed that leaders at all levels speak out forcefully against any kind of divisiveness or divisive speech.

“And we expect that our political leaders will do so without waiting to be prompted. All of those who spoke to, sometimes when leaders do not speak up promptly it always results in degeneration no matter what the problem may be.

“This applied to both the statement made by the young people in the
South East as well as the youth in the Northern states. We discovered there was a need for much greater resonance in the way that these things are done and for the leaders to speak up more forcefully.

“We believe that if the leaders do not speak up forcefully enough if for any reason matters are allowed to degenerate, not only does leadership loose their legitimacy, they run the risk of things going completely out of control,” he said

Commending the leaders from the North and South for their openness at the consultation meetings, he said that “they were extremely responsible even in their criticisms of what they felt were issues that should have been better handled. I think that their criticisms were fair and balanced. I must commend them for their sense of responsibility and their leadership.”

He told the governors that some of the issues that came up during the consultative meetings included the issues of the herdsmen and farmers crisis.

He said “Especially the way that some of these have resulted in flashpoint across the country. We started those discussions during the consultations we had and I believe that we will be able to deepen those discussions in our meeting and possibly hold a more expanded meeting where we will be to take a closer look at it.

“It is absolutely important that we are able to make lasting and satisfactory solutions to these problems. Of course the problems are multidimensional but the states have a very important role to play especially because they are in control of land in their territories.

“I must say that I trust that all of us must appreciate the need to show greater unity of purpose and the determination to work together to resolve various challenges that arise on a constant basis for the benefit of all Nigerians regardless of party affiliations.

“We must resist the temptation to play politics especially with matters of security, but to reach for simplistic narratives that might be originally expedient and satisfying but false, deceiving and sometimes unhealthy to proper understanding of the issues. Sometimes intensions are perceived on the account of the fact that they have wrong perception about a particular thing.

“I think it is in our place to ensure that we dig down the fact and ensure that people are given the fact and ensure that we don’t colour them with politics,” he stated.

The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, at the end of the meeting told State House correspondents that all the governors at the meeting are unanimously behind the Federal Government in keeping Nigeria one.

  • FEC okays ministerial retreat to end educational crises

FEC okays ministerial retreat to end educational crises

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the hosting of ministerial retreat to end crises in the education sector.

The retreat, which aims at reviewing education roadmap, also plans to brainstorm on how to boost standard of education in Nigeria.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, briefed State House correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting chaired by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Adamu, who was in the company of the Special Adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said: “Council discussed very important issue on the road map of education sector and developments. We discussed many issues but the most important was education.

“Members agree that the fallen standard in education is so serious that we will need a ministerial retreat to look at all the issues. There are a lot of issues in solution and all of them are crying for attention.

“So there will be a ministerial retreat in the next two weeks to look at the issues and from there we will take off in what we are doing.

“Initially we had prepared blueprint but FEC felt the issues is beyond that because there are crises in all the areas of education, in children school, in technical education and training, in ICT, in all the areas you can think of.

“So ministers are going to start talking to themselves and come out with solutions.” he added

He also faulted the recent media reports on the issue of Christian religious knowledge teaching and history subject in schools.

He said “There is no truth in it at all. It was just somebody’s imagination probably somebody who wishes to raise tension in the country after the Biafra issue and then the quit order given by some young people in the north so the person just followed suit trying to stoic the embers of religion. There is no truth whatsoever, I repeat.

“Certainly there was a policy in 2012 which was given effect in 2014 that is even before this government came in. One of the things I did as minister was to speak to the national council on education to disarticulate history from the social studies curricula because we believe we want our young people to know our history.

“You cannot know who you are without knowing who your ancestors were in the past. And the national council of education did accept and agree that the teaching and learning of CRK has been made compulsory for all Christians students and teaching and learning of Islamic studies is compulsory for all Muslim students,” he added.

He pointed out that the reports were accusing the Ministry of doing the opposite of what it has done.

  • Hate speech: Osinbajo urges Northern traditional rulers to speak up

Hate speech: Osinbajo urges Northern traditional rulers to speak up

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday met with Northern traditional rulers and charged them to always speak up against hate speeches and divisive voices in their respective domains.

In his opening remarks at the meeting held at the old Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, Osinbajo said the meeting had become imperative in view of a spate of divisive statements in recent weeks, pitching the South-East against the North.

He maintained that the divisive rhetoric and agitations were unjustifiable, unacceptable and often times illegal.

“You are, by virtue of your vast knowledge, wisdom and experience, both a vital link with our past, and an important guarantee for the success of our future. This is why your role in national affairs is critical.

“The reason for these series of meetings is well known to all of us; it became necessary in the wake of a spate of divisive statements, in recent months and weeks, pitching the South-East against the North.

“We are all aware of the so-called ‘ultimatum’ issued by a group of Northern youths, asking that all Igbos living in the North vacate the region.

“Before then, there was the clamour, and it’s still on-going, by some south-eastern youths, operating as IPOB and affiliated groups, demanding secession from Nigeria at all costs and by any means.

“In all our previous engagements with Northern and South-Eastern leaders, we all came to the consensus that Nigeria is stronger and better together, and that these hate-filled and divisive rhetoric and agitations are unjustifiable, unacceptable and often times illegal. And I would like to reiterate that today.” he said.
The acting president said that the traditional rulers had a great role to play in checking the divisive tendencies in the country.

He stressed that Nigeria had already seen enough violence and bloodshed during its history.
According to him, the price of Nigeria’s unity has already been paid with the blood and lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians lost.
Recalling President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to one Nigeria from his experience in the military, Osinbajo said that Buhari fought side by side with Nigerians of every tribe and faith.
The acting president said: “We must protect each other, put our lives on the line for each other; we were brothers even in the face of death. This is the type of nation we must maintain.
“As royal fathers and leaders, I think you will agree with me that we all have a role to play in countering the voices of divisiveness, and the elements who seek to take us down a bloody path.
“Let us continue to counsel the misguided elements among our youth, who think that ethnic confrontation is a game and that words can be thrown around carelessly without repercussion.’’
Osinbajo assured the traditional rulers that the “government is not deaf to the legitimate concerns and frustrations in parts of the country.
“Every part of Nigeria has its own grievances. But these have to be expressed graciously and managed with mutuality rather than with scorn and disdain.
“I would like to assure you all that we are here to listen and to answer, and, very importantly, to reassure everyone that we are committed to the unity of Nigeria, and that upon the foundation of that unity we can together build a prosperous and great country.’’
He urged all Nigerians never take the nation’s diversity for granted, saying the fullness of the nation’s strength “actually lies in that diversity.

“And we must wield that diversity, not as divisive tool, but instead as a binding agent.

“As we round up these consultations tomorrow with a meeting with governors, it is clear to me that we are all resolved to by words, conduct and action, promote the unity of our dear nation.” he said

He, however, assured that the government would ensure that “the entire apparatus of government is deployed to ensure that no one threatens Nigeria’s territorial integrity and that no one threatens the lives or livelihoods of any Nigerian living anywhere in the country’’.

While thanking the traditional rulers for their unyielding cooperation and support, Osinbajo prayed that almighty God would continue to give them the wisdom and the strength to preside over their Kingdoms and the good health to reign long and reign well.

Among those who attended the meeting included the Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi and the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar.

Others were, Alhaji Muhammed Isah Muhammed, the Emir of Jama’a in Kaduna State, Justice Lawal Hassan, the Emir of Gummi; the Coordinator of the Northern traditional rulers council, Sakaruyi of Karo Dr. Emmanuel Kyauta, and the representative of the Emir of Katsina, Prof. Sani Lugga ,the Waziri Katsina.

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambari; Alhaji Mustapha Agwai II, Emir of Lafia in Nasarawa State; Alhaji Kyari Umar El-Kanemi, Shehu of Bama representing Shehu of Borno and the Gbong Gwon Jos, Jacob Buba Jang, also attended the meeting.

Also at the meeting were Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar, Emir of Gombe; Ndakwo Ameh Oboni II,Attah Igala,Kogi State; Alhaji Muhammadu Ibn Abali, the Emir of Fika inYobe;, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmed Muhammed Emir of Anka in Zamfara and Prof. James Ayatse, the Tor Tiv.

The Acting president on Sunday met with traditional rulers from the South- East in continuation of his on-going consultative meetings with leaders of thought across the country.

Osinbajo will on Wednesday meet with the 36 governors of the federation as part of the on-going consultative meetings with stakeholders in the “Project Nigeria”

  • Wheelbarrow: Jealous opponents blackmailing me – Ortom

Wheelbarrow: Jealous opponents blackmailing me – Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom on Thursday said that his political opponents jealous of his achievements are blackmailing him towards 2019 elections over wheelbarrow distribution in the state.

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Ortom said that such opponents are latching on rumour in attempt to diminish his rising profile.

He said that it was regrettable that deliberate lies were being told against him by people scheming to gain advantage in the run up to 2019 general election.

On the accusations of disturbing wheelbarrows for empowerment, he said: “That is outright falsehood. There is no iota of truth. It is meant to scandalize, blackmail and to reduce my rising profile in Benue because of achievements we have recorded during these two years.

“When you hear the likes of David Mark, who are supposed to be an elder statesman, go to make false propaganda against people who are supposed to be his subjects, I used to regard him as an elder, but it’s unfortunate he is telling lies.

“Those wheelbarrows were brought to us by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to be distributed to displaced people who need them.

“They actually need those wheelbarrows and they were given to the state emergency relief body for onward distribution to the victims. And for whatever reasons, the agency wrote my name that I was distributing it.

“But as soon as that was drawn to my attention, I refuted it and I said this is not my property.

“In empowerment, I have several programmes for the youth and this one is not meant for the youths. It was distributed to displaced people.

“So, it was just meant to blackmail me because PDP in Benue are still dreaming, including David Mark, that I am governor and I won election.

“I left them (PDP) because of the injustice they did to me and I came to APC and found a platform. The people accepted me and I won. They are out to blackmail me and it will not work because there is no iota of truth.”

On the jealous opponents, he said “Of course, they have been propagating that they want to take over the leadership in 2019 but I think they are just dreaming because even when it was pepper, I was able to finish the food, how much more now that it’s with chicken and sesame seed.  You know it’s easier to eat and the people we are working with, we have gotten more support.

“More people have decamped from the PDP to the APC. So, where will they go? The local government elections is coming up on June 3. I want them to come up and compete.

“It’s unfortunate that even to present candidates, there are factions and up till today.

“I am told that they have six candidates out of the 23 local governments. It is their problem. They should go and sort out their own problem. All I am concerned is to bring development to my people.” he said

Ortom said that he has invited former Senate President, David Mark, to a meeting where he presented his administration’s second year scorecard but he declined, adding that other Benue citizens however applauded his effort.

He said: “On the 22 May, I invited all Benue stakeholders, David Mark was invited and I was given standing ovation. That alone is an indication that Benue people are pleased with me in all sectors despite all the challenges especially in funding.

“I have cleared arrears of salaries. These people are just jealous, David Mark is jealous and all his cohorts are jealous. They have left Benue State and went to Rivers and met and came and disturb us in Benue State. Let them come to Benue State.” he added

He maintained that his problem with Mark was not about a quarrel but spreading of falsehood, adding however that he would take any opportunity to discuss the issue over with the former Senate president.

He said “I don’t think it’s about quarrel. For a very senior citizen of that level to spread falsehood and tell lies against his governor when I invited them to stakeholders meeting where my two year scorecard was delivered to my people and they accepted it and appreciated what we are doing and he refused to come only to go to Rivers and be telling lies against me, It’s unfortunate.

“Anytime I have the opportunity I think we will discuss things over,” he stated.

It would be recalled that while commissioning some projects executed by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state recently, Mark had alluded to the fact that while Wike was commissioning roads, some state governors were busy distributing wheelbarrows to their citizens.

All journalists in the Villa are directly attached to the office of the Special Adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina.

Adetayo was on Monday afternoon expelled by Buhari’s Chief Security Officer, Bashir Abubakar, over story considered offensive to the Presidency.

The Special Adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, on his Twitter handle said that he was not consulted before Adetayo was expelled.

He said “We weren’t consulted in the media office by the CSO before he expelled The Punch reporter.

President Buhari is committed to press freedom.

  • Fayose: looted cash hidden at Presidential Villa

Fayose: looted cash hidden at Presidential Villa

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of protecting looted cash allegedly hidden by some top officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and unnamed sponsors of the party’s 2015 presidential campaign.
Fayose said Aso Rock Presidential Villa had been turned into a facility where the President’s men hide their loot.
But the governor neither provided details nor substantiated his allegation.
He accused the President and his administration of fooling Nigerians with what he called “staged-managed recovery” of looted cash in some locations across the country to convince them that the anti-corruption war was on course.
In a statement yesterday by his Special Assistant on public Communication and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said the hefty cash in local and foreign currencies recovered in some parts of the
country belonged to top officials of the Buhari administration, who he said have become untouchable because of the backing they enjoy from their principal.
He urged the international community to hold the Buhari administration accountable for the recovered N13 billion cash found at an Ikoyi, Lagos home.
According to him, the issue “must not be swept under the carpet”.
Fayose was reacting to a statement credited to Information Minister Lai Mohammed that looters had resorted to burying stolen funds in their backyards, deep forests and burial grounds to escape the scrutiny of Bank Verification Number (BVN) and possible arrest.
But Fayose disagreed with the minister, saying: “Looters in the Buhari’s Presidency, especially those being compensated for funding the election of the President in 2015, bury their loots in the Villa with presidential protection.
“Should it be wrong for other supposed looters that do not have presidential protection, like their APC counterparts to bury their loots in burial grounds, probably for spiritual protection?
“Nigerians can no longer be fooled by stage-managed loots recoveries, with no traceable owners (looters), especially when the loots are traceable to close associates of the President and his cabinet members.
“Obviously, this so-called anti-corruption war has become a laughing stock with N49 million found in Kaduna Airport, N448 million discovered in a shop on Victoria Island, Lagos, and N13 billion found in Ikoyi, Lagos; neither having owners nor the identities of owners of the properties where the money was found known.
“It is either the money belongs to members of Buhari’s government or it is being planted by the government to sustain its fake anti-corruption fight in the minds of the people.
“Enough of stage-managed and fake anti-corruption war aimed solely at opposition figures, especially presidential hopefuls in the 2019 election.”
Fayose said two different laws were being operated in the country: one for the APC and those who defect to the party; the other for the opposition, especially those perceived as having presidential ambition.
He added: “The narrative they push daily is that only those in their government are saints while other Nigerians, including those in the National Assembly, Judiciary, opposition politicians and the civil servants, are rogues, while only Buhari’s appointees are saints.
“To worsen matters, the cluelessness of the APC government in the last two years has plunged the country into debt without anything to show.
“The cabals in the Presidency are also taking advantage of the President’s state of health, which is as a result of his age, to oppress Nigerians.
“Nigerians must, therefore, keep their eyes on the ball and avoid being carried away by the orchestrated distractions aimed at preventing them from seeing how the APC-led government has failed woefully.”
