Ashafa hails Buhari over NNPC board dissolution

Senator Gbenga Ashafa on Wednesday commended President Muhammadu Buhari over the probe and dissolution of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) board.

Ashafa made this remarks while defending the likely results of a motion he made recently on Fuel Tanker Tragedies on Nigeria’s Highways at a plenary session on the 25th of June.

The lawmaker, representing Lagos-east, Senatorial District, who described the move as a fallout of legislative actions, noted that the Buhari led administration is willing to reverse the negative economic trends caused by the unregulated management activities of the NNPC.

“The dissolution of the NNPC board, the current probe, amongst other things to follow, is a direct fall-out from the plenary proceedings. The prayers sought by the motion have been granted and it further underscores the need for legislators to face up to the task of keeping the executive arm of government and its various agencies in check.” he stressed.

“June 29, the National Economic Council chaired by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo set up a four-man committee to probe and unravel the sum of N3.8trillion not remitted to the Federation Account by the NNPC between 2012 and May 2015 as well as $2.1bn purported to have been deducted from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) without approval.

“The gradual cleansing of the nation’s economic rot is as a result of Buhari’s vision and the steady nature of change which is aimed at placing Nigeria’s economy, which is currently dependent on crude oil, back on its once-enviable pedestal in Africa.”  He observed.

Update: Jonathan changed Nigeria’s political history – Buhari

The President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday said the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan has changed the course of Nigeria’s political history for good.

He made the remark after President Jonathan handed over executive summary of the handover notes and a copy of the National Conference report to him.

The ceremony was held at the Presidential Villa after Buhari and the Vice President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, were conducted round some offices and facilities at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari maintained that Jonathan’s singular act of conceding defeat has not only earned the respect of Nigerians but also of world leaders.

He said: “Until I read and digest this notes from the President, I don’t think I will be in a position to make any strong contribution.

“But what I will say is since the telephone call you made, you have changed the course of Nigeria’s political history. For that you have earned yourself a place in our history, for stabilising this system of multi party democracy and you have earned the respect of not only Nigerians but world leaders.

“All the leaders that spoke to me and congratulated us for arriving at the point we arrived, mentioned this and I could understand, a lot of relief in their voices that Nigeria has made it after all  and this is largely owed to a situation.

“If you had wanted to make things difficult, you could have made things difficult and that would have been at the expense of lives of poor Nigerians, but you chose the part of honour and may God help all of us. Thank you very much your Excellency.”

Part of President-elect’s entourage to the seat of power include the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Oyegun, members of the two parties’ transition committees, Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and Spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Muhammed.

    • Deplores slow accreditation

The vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has hailed the conduct of yesterday’s presidential and national assembly elections.

Though he flayed the late arrival of electoral materials and officials, Osinbajo said the process was “smooth but slow.”

Speaking shortly after casting his vote by 8:10pm at his polling 033 Unit 4 in Victoria Garden City (VGC) Lagos, the former Lagos Attorney General said the long wait was worth the stress.

According to him, “The accreditation was painfully slow but what matters is that it is worth the wait.

“One has been able to vote and that is what counts. It doesn’t matter how much one has gone through. The joy is that voting can take place despite the logistics challenges.”

Osinbajo, who arrived at the VGC recreational park at exactly 8:20am, was not accredited until 2:05pm.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) arrived the voting centre around 10:30am, more than two hours after accreditation should have commenced.

Voters, who besieged the unit, waited patiently under the shades in the park.

To while away boredom, many of them greeted Osinbajo warmly before demanding for photo shots with him.

A smiling Osinbajo obliged, exchanging pleasantries with a handful of them.

When the officials arrived, accreditation didn’t start until 1:15pm owing to the malfunctioning of the two card readers attached to the unit.

It took the delivery of back-up readers before the process could commence.

Voting eventually commenced by 6:05pm with accredited voters refusing to leave the centre until they had performed their civic obligations.

Osinbajo, who refused to jump the queue, told reporters that he was motivated to wait all the way to exemplify the new Nigeria the APC is working hard to build.

“I think it’s all in the spirit of the new Nigeria. Everyone has to learn to be patient and queue to get things done.”

His wife, Dolapo, said there were no qualms with having to wait.

“It’s part of the bargain and we have to always wait because that is life,” she stated.

Osinbajo: deliverance for Nigeria on Saturday

The vice-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said Nigerians will be delivered from the grip of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday.

Osinbajo said the electorate must vote out President Goodluck Jonathan to regain their political and economic deliverance.  He was dismayed that the ruling party ran the country aground.

Speaking at a town hall meeting with APC leaders and members in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, Osinbajo urged Nigerians to ignore the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, that voters should go home after casting their ballots.

The former Lagos State attorney general said Jonathan had failed Nigerians and did not deserve re-election.

According to him, a vote for the APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, is a vote for deliverance from poverty, unemployment and corruption inflicted on them by the PDP administration.

He promised that a Buhari administration’s major focus would be job creation and fighting corruption, which has given Nigeria a global notoriety.

Osinbajo said: “President Jonathan is tired of governance because he is overwhelmed. His government has no focus. As of today, Nigeria is one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

“That is why they are afraid of a Buhari’s presidency because they are afraid of being jailed.

“They know there won’t be room for corrupt practices. We are promising you that wonders shall happen again in this country, if Buhari wins this election.

“President Jonathan has failed Nigerians in all aspects and deserves to be rejected by Nigerians. If you look at our programme, all we emphasise is how to provide jobs for our unemployed youths.

“Whether Jonathan likes it or not, the dream of Nigeria becoming a liberated nation shall come to pass on Saturday.”

APC’s Deputy National Chairman (South) Chief Segun Oni urged Nigerians to sack the PDP government because of its failure to stop corruption, which has impoverished citizens.

Another four years of           PDP, Oni said, would be an extension of corruption and bad governance.

Oni said: “Nigeria is the only country where over 400, 000 barrels of crude oil are being stolen daily. Nigeria is the only country where people are being kidnapped without resistance.

“Nigeria is the only country where a President said stealing is no corruption. All these would have to stop for the coming generations to be proud of us as leaders.

Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi urged the Ekiti populace to use the election to be part of history as one of those who fought for Nigeria’s rebirth.

Fayemi added that those who are afraid of being jailed should not be allowed to perpetuate themselves in office and continue to loot the country.

At the event were former Governor Niyi Adebayo, former Governor of old Ondo State Bamidele Olumilua, former Deputy Governor Prof Modupe Adelabu, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, Opeyemi Bamidele, among others.

  • ‘APC ’ll create jobs, wealth’

    ‘APC ’ll create jobs, wealth’

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) has assured Nigerians that the party will implement its economic recovery policies to create employment for jobless youths and wealth for the citizenry.

Its vice presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, spoke yesterday while addressing Niger Delta youths in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

He said the implementation of a national economic recovery policy was the surest way to secure jobs for millions of the nation’s jobless youths and a deliberate policy of APC towards a national economic recovery.

As part of the economic recovery plan, he said APC government would grant tax incentives to employers with as low as 10 employees.

He said this would be done to encourage employers of labour to keep their employees, expand their business and employ more people.

Prof. Osinbajo, who addressed youths from Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, Edo and Bayelsa on the theme: “Secure the future: Discussing Change with the youths”, at Amazing Grace Events Centre in the state capital, said over 80 per cent of the nation’s youths were not positively engaged because of the failings of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led administration over the years.

He noted that the youth population in Nigeria was larger than the population of some African countries and that it would take a determined government like the one to be led by the APC to device and implement well-thought-out policies aimed at creating gainful employments for millions of youths.

The APC vice presidential candidate told the gathering that the future of Nigeria rest on what the nation does with its youths today.

The party, he promised, would secure “the future of Nigeria by positively engaging the youths across the nation”.

Once in power, Prof. Osinbajo assured, the party would secure at least 20,000 jobs per state for the Nigerian youths in the first instance.

He identified technology as one major area of growth the party would employ to secure jobs for Nigerians.

He added that the party would establish major technology incubation centres from where Nigerians would get involve in direct production of computers, smartphones and other related accessories as was the case in APC-controlled Osun State.

He said the APC government at the centre would build industrial parks, encourage out-sourcing of jobs, introduce entrepreneurial training into the nation’s education to enable the youth to become self-dependent and become employment generators on leaving school instead of depending on government alone.

According to him, the party would also establish Energy Academy, where professionals for the energy sector would be trained.

He noted that a serious-minded government should be able to identify great potential, where jobs for the people are created and secured.

On national power problem, Prof. Osinbajo said the APC government would decentralise power generation issues as was being done by the APC government in Lagos State, where he said certain areas were identified and efforts made by government to provide steady power for them.

The party’s vice presidential candidate noted that if conscious efforts were taken and power provided for business clusters, they would allow firms to retain their employees, remain in business, employ more people as well as pay tax to the government.

“The retail business, sports and entertainment sectors of the economy have been taken care of by the party with a view to providing jobs for the youth and progress for the nation,” he assured the youths.

Prof. Osinbajo said Nigeria’s problem was not all about the falling price of crude oil in the international market, but about corruption under the PDP-led government in last 16 years.

He said those opposing the party’s presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, were doing so out of fear for his anti-corruption posture.

“We will put a government in place that is ready to fight corruption. The reason they are afraid of Buhari is for fear of arrest to stop corruption. We will check misgovernance across the country,” he stated.

The Edo State Deputy Governor assured the Akwa Ibom State APC governorship candidate, Mr. Umana Okon Umana, that winning the governorship election of Akwa Ibom Stare was a possibility.

He reminded him and the Akwa Ibom people that it was thought impossible to remove PDP from Edo State, adding that was a history now.

  • Attack on Osinbajo: Emerhor, youths slam Asari-Dokubo’s ally

Attack on Osinbajo: Emerhor, youths slam Asari-Dokubo’s ally

Delta State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Olorogun O’tega Emerhor  has berated Rex Anighoro, an ally of former Niger Delta militant leader, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, for threatening the party’s vice presidential candidate, Prof Yemi Osinbajo.

In a statement, Anighoro accused Osinbajo of working against the interest of the Urhobo by visiting the President-General of the new Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Chief Tuesday Onoge.

Emerhor, through his campaign organisation, described Anighoro’s statement as irresponsible.

Also, a former leader of UPU’s youth wing Igho Onoriobakpoepha said the statement was aimed at stirring ethnic and religious hate among Urhobo against Osibanjo and APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

A statement yesterday by the Director, Media and Political Communication of the Emerhor Campaign Organisation, Dr. Fred Oghenesivbe, said Anighoro’s statement, which was released under the aegis of Coalition of Urhobo Nation Youth Leaders and Stakeholders (CUNYLS), could cause a war between the youth of UPU’s two factions.

He said Anighoro was aware that the Uvwiamuge Declaration took into account only the two maor parties – the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and not the Labour Party (LP).

Oghenesivbe said APC accepted the UPU offer and gave Urhobo Emerhor as their endorsed candidate.

The Delta APC spokesman said if Anighoro, the UPU and Chief Joe Omene were sure that LP was part of the bargain ab-initio and wanted LP governorship candidate, Chief Great Ogboru, to fly the Urhobo flag in the election, they ought to have presented him the first time they struck a deal with Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and the PDP.

According to him, if David Edevwie had won the PDP primary, Ogboru would have been abandoned by the UPU, Omene and Anighoro’s group.

Oghenesivbe described Anighoro as one of the best brains in the youth arm of the Omene-led UPU.

The spokesman urged Anighoro to avoid meddling in controversies that could destroy his reputation in Urhobo land.

A former Research and Information Officer in UPU’s Youth Wing, Onoriobakpoepha, said Anighoro’s statement was borne out of his loyalty to Omene, who was removed for allegedly attempting to undermine the Uvwiamughe Declaration.

Onoriobakpoepha said: “Anighoro and his group are too insignificant to bar a vice presidential candidate from visiting the UPU and Delta Central. Besides, such an utterance is criminal and inciting. It is common knowledge that he is an apologist of President Goodluck Jonathan, for those who still remember his infamous declaration to dance naked, if Jonathan failed to get a second term.

“Knowing that Rex is also a professed loyalist of Chief Omene, whose UPU has been displaced over its deliberate attempt to undermine the Uvwiamuge Declaration, we see, by the tone of his statement, an extended conspiracy by the rejected UPU forces to throw spanners in the wheel of Olorogun Emerhor’s bid as the Urhobo consensus governorship candidate in Delta State.”
