Buhari begins vacation, hands over to Osinbajo

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday began a five day vacation, the presidency has said.

This is contained in a statement issued by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

According to the statement, President Buhari, who is expected to be away from Friday, February 5th to Wednesday, February 10th, 2016 has handed over to Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The statement noted that Prof. Osinbajo will begin to carry out the duties of the president while Buhari’s vacation lasts.

It reads in part: “In compliance with section 145 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution, President Buhari has dispatched a formal notice of his vacation to the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

No going back on anti-graft war – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday said that pressure from some Nigerian elites to slow down the ongoing fight against graft would not deter the Buhari presidency from ridding the country of the problem of corruption.

He made the remark during a meeting with a delegation from the Moslem Congress of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Osinbajo, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, noted that the government has been getting regular messages from some Nigerian elites urging it to cool down on the war.

He said: “It is a very strange morality that some of those people have, very complicated but cutting across all tribes and religious differences.”

He however observed that the masses of the Nigerian people encouragingly have a clearer understanding of right and wrong.

“The masses don’t have that problem,” he said.

According to him, a new tribe of Nigerians who would not compromise their values but would maintain a sense of right and wrong is now emerging.

“The man on the street is very clear, so whatever some of these elites say, we shall keep our focus on the masses who voted for us,” the Vice President declared.

He said it is simply unacceptable that in the last 16 years there is not a single federal government completed road project, not to talk of rail.

Noting that the reason for their failure was corruption, he said that the cost of projects was often inflated as people entrusted with public trust struggle to enrich themselves at the expense of the people.

He said it was the same inordinate desire for enrichment that explains why money meant to procure arms was being distributed among persons at a time when the territorial integrity of the nation was being attacked.

“The insurgency has gone on for 6 years because government could not adequately equip the military,” he said

But the Vice President assured Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari and himself would not relent.

He said the president and himself have no other agenda but “the progress of this country.”

Continuing, he said: “Mr. President and I are extremely focussed on what we need to do. We will focus on critical things, infrastructure and social investments.”

Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation from the Moslem Congress of Nigeria, Imam Abdulahi Shuaib conveyed the support of the organization to the government’s programmes including anti-corruption, and expressed readiness to offer assistance.

According to him, “we are thankful that our candidates of choice in the election emerged.”

He said the choice of the President and Vice President were made by God Himself during last year’s presidential election.

The Vice President also received delegations from the Nigeria Society of Engineers, NSE and the Facility for Oil Sector Transparency Reform, FOSTER, a group composed of NGOs involved in different issues in the Niger Delta areas.

At his courtesy meeting with the NSE, Prof Osinbajo praised the engineers and highlighted the importance of the profession in national development.

“There is no question at all that engineers are central to the development of the society,” he noted.

The NSE delegation was led by its President, Engineer Otis Anyaeji.

Speaking while receiving FOSTER, the Vice President restated the government’s commitment to the development of the Niger Delta.

He also commended the group for coming together to develop a common framework to support the process of development in the area.

The group, which said it adopted a common framework in order to avoid duplication, was led by Mr. Richard Oshowole.

$25b Infrastructure Fund elicits global interest, says Osinbajo

The Federal Government’s plan to raise a $25 billion Infrastructural Fund from the global community and establish long term bankable projects is gaining traction,  Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said.

“We have seen considerable favorable interests from some sovereign wealth funds and other nations,” the VP told a delegation of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) that paid him a courtesy call yesterday in his office in Abuja.

The VPsaid the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) which manages the country’s sovereign wealth fund is leading the project, adding that the Infrastructural Fund would create opportunity for commercial partners to participate in the building of the nation’s infrastructures alongside the Federal Government. This would be done through the establishment of bankable projects that involve such commercial partners.

He said the China-Exim Bank has agreed to finance the railway projects linking Lagos to Kano and Lagos to Calabar.  ‘We expect these will generate some economic activities and create jobs,” he said.

  • Ministerial Appointees: What Nigerians expect

    Ministerial Appointees: What Nigerians expect

ACLN wishes to join other Nigerians to congratulate our President, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari and his Deputy, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on taking the next step towards advancing the cause of the nation by appointing men and women who would help the administration to get Nigeria where it needs to be – a nation to be reckoned with in the committee of Nations.

How would this herculean task be achieved; given the fact that in the past administrations, some of our ministers literally sold Nigerian to the highest bidder.

The tabloid both national and international is replete with ways these public officers diverted huge amounts of the nation’s wealth into their private accounts, lived larger than life, and was comforted by the fact that the powers that be, of which they were a part, would never audit them.

Our nation was on a precipice waiting to be plundered into utter oblivion were it not for the divine hand that ushered in a new administration whom Nigerians believe will live to its words of fighting corruption, securing the nation and making Nigeria a better place for all irrespective of their background.

Under the former administration, our nation was moving in a direction where “stealing” was said to not be “corruption iall spheres of public life.  It was not about the people, nor about the nation, it was about self, and how much can be acquired to oppress everyone around.  The impunity knew no bounds.

To this end, we would like to list a few expectations from poling a cross-section of Nigerians across the globe.  The people would like to see:

    1. A declaration of your assets in line with examples from the President and Vice President.

    2. Transparency in all dealings; Nigerian ministers must lead with credibility and accountability.

    3. As a minister of the federal republic of Nigeria, your portfolios would require that you spend a greater deal of your time in Nigeria, understanding your portfolio, studying the country and judiciously implementing federal character to the extent that no group or state would be left behind.

    4. As a minister you must be accountable to the people being served.

    5. That you uphold and honor Nigeria within and without as your actions positive or negative would directly impact the worlds perception of Nigeria.

    6. That you buy into rebuilding our tarnished image by your actions. Fighting corruption should be the effort of all including the ministers.

    7. That you will find ways to make Nigeria a better place for all and not just the fortunate few.

  • ‘VIP’s not VP’s house targeted by Boko Haram’

‘VIP’s not VP’s house targeted by Boko Haram’

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, on Thursday night denied report that the Federal Government has uncovered plans by Boko Haram to bomb the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s house.

He said in a statement that there was typographical error in the talking point circulated to journalists at the end of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting.

According to him, the aspect of ‘house of the vice president’ in the talking point should have read ‘houses of VIPs’.

The statement reads: “A press briefing note circulated today by the Secretariat of the
National Economic Council, NEC, contains a typo on the very last line of the last paragraph.

“That paragraph should read ‘The Vice President also disclosed that security reports has it that scavengers are now being prepared by insurgents to dump refuse laden with bombs in the houses of VIPs.’

“The last line erroneously says ‘in the house of the Vice President.’ Please take note of the correction.

“The 59th NEC meeting was presided over by the Vice President, Prof.Yemi Osinbajo, earlier Thursday,” It stated.

  • Osinbajo tasks leaders on access to information, data

Osinbajo tasks leaders on access to information, data

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday declared that access to information and data is the right of citizens and not a privilege.

Speaking at a forum organized by the Global Initiative for Fiscal Transparency on the sidelines of the ongoing Third International Conference on Financing for Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Osinbajo said that any institutional effort to deprive citizens of this right would constitute a serious impediment to good governance and development.

With the right political will, he said governments can ensure that citizens’ rights of access to data and information is upheld with appropriate sanction where it is denied.

Osinbajo, in a statement issued by Olusola Abiola on behalf of Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, gave introductory remarks alongside the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, and current United Nations Development Programme Administrator, Ms. Helen Clark.

Other panelists at the forum included ministers from Belgium and Bangladesh.

The vice president noted that such a culture of openness is a basic prerequisite for governments to achieve transparency and accountability in governance.

He also informed stakeholders of efforts by Nigerian government to foster the culture of open data through mechanisms such as the National Extractive Industries and Transparency Initiative (NEITI) project and the Freedom of Information Act.
