  • ‘Professor Johnbull’ harps on moral values

‘Professor Johnbull’ harps on moral values

With 26 episodes in two seasons so far, satirical comedy series, Professor Johnbull, has continued to expose dominant ills of the Nigerian society by passing across valuable lessons in life to TV audiences across the country.
Since its debut in August 2016, the drama series, which airs on Nigeria’s biggest TV network, the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on all its platforms including terrestrial and cable, DSTV and StarTimes, has shown the hilarious as well as educative; featuring episodes with subjects and titles such as Kitchen on the Run,  Voice of the City, Beautiful Girls, Happening Guys, Baby Bomboi, Foreign Petrol, Eliza My Daughter, Find Me Something and others, Oil Windfall, Dem Give Me, Sorting Things and  Radio without Battery.
Mercy Johnson Okojie plays Caro, a character that flagrantly exhibits her grammatical limitations.  This makes her a delight each time she comes into a scene. ”Professor Sir” is her usual refrain to her master’s (Professor) calls.
The ”erudite professor” is played by a master in the entertainment industry,  Kanayo O. Kanayo.  He gives a fantastic account of himself in translating the role.  Naturally, Kanayo O Kanayo is not a man given to high-sounding words, but, indeed, he is handling the role so well.   Not only is he professorially dignified in carriage, he is also very paternalistic.  And his Engish? Wow, it could raise the dead. He has a way of elevating a simple communication task to the level of a doctoral thesis.   Sample:  ”This is unabashed educational jingoism” when all he meant was, “a wrong way to teach”.
The soap also parades other comic characters like Olaniyi acted by Yomi Fash-Lanso, Mai Doya (Funky Mallam), Jumoke played by Bidemi Kosoko, Etuk (Imeh Okon Bishop). These guys just turn on the fountain of humour.
Beyond these regulars, the drama has also featured musicians including Ego, Flavour, M.I., featuring in cameo appearances. Similarly, comedians such as Ayo Makun (AY), Bovi and Helen Paul have added spice to the satire.
In addition to mirth, the show is didactic and instructional. Every episode has a lesson it conveys. For example  Kitchen on the Run, carries the message that husbands should provide culinary support for their busy wives.  ’Voice of the City’ condemns the replacement of public power supply with domestic power generating sets which are hazardous to both health and social relationships.
In the last two seasons,  Professor Johnbull has brought art, humour, high technical quality and education to the viewers of NTA and DSTV, giving Nigerians a bundle of creativity packaged in 30 minutes of drama.
Prolific Tchidi Tchikere who is the series director, was effusive in commending the concept Professor Johnbull as a TV drama series. He highlighted the numerous merits of the sitcom, part of which is the emphasis on peaceful co-existence among the different ethnic groups in Nigeria.

Knocks for corporate begging on Glo’s Professor Johnbull

THe growing habit of corporate begging will draw the ire of the cast of Globacom-sponsored TV drama series, Professor Johnbull, which goes on air this evening.

According to a press statement by Globacom, the executive producer of the show, the 30-minute satire “promises to be as entertaining and educative as the previous episodes, as it brings to our consciousness, the negative effect of fake and corporate begging and how it has been hampering the chances of those who genuinely need help in our society.”
“Corporate Beggar” Stephen Odimgbe, who plays the role of Flash, attempts to swindle the erudite Professor Johnbull, acted by Kanayo O. Kanayo, and other members of the public by pretending to have a terminal ailment and opening a Go-Fund-Me-Account. Viewers will see if he succeeded and how Professor Johnbull handled the attempt.
The drama will also expose the large number of fake beggars on the streets and their resourceful ways of operation. Viewers will also have the opportunity of finding out who the fake ones are among the beggars and how to determine those who genuinely need help.
Globacom explained that “Eye of the Blind” raises questions such as what fate befalls those who scam others by pretending to be invalids? Is there any dignity in begging when the beggar doesn’t have to? Has begging now become a profession in the country? Who are the corporate beggars and how do they operate?
Directed by Tchidi Chikere with Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD) and Chief Chika Okpala (Zebrudayah) as production consultants, “Eye of the Blind” parades the regular actors of the series including Olaniyi (Yomi Fash-Lanso), Mai Doya (Funky Mallam) and Elizabeth (Queen Nwokoye).

  • Bimbo Akintola professes love for KOK in Professor Johnbull

Bimbo Akintola professes love for KOK in Professor Johnbull

Irregular power supply and the attendant hassles caused by the various individual palliative measures deployed by Nigerians to grapple with the endemic problem is the thrust of Episode 11 of Professor Johnbull.

The television satire, sponsored by Globacom, was broadcast last Tuesday on NTA Network, NTA International and StarTimes.

The episode poetically titled Voice of the City aptly refers to the noise produced by the various generators deployed by citizens eking out a living and those trying to fight the heat at night. Professor Johnbull’s visiting nephew from United States, Dr. Ifeanyi Ogunyemi, experienced insomnia and hallucination as a result of the twin combination of generator noise which he described as “sleeping in a factory” and the oppressive heat.

The altercation which escalated to litigation between Madam Doris (Patience Ozokwor), a nurse on night duty trying to catch sleep during the day and Olaniyi, the restaurateur, powering his generator to cool his drinks and preserve his ‘nkwobi,’  was used to depict another instance of the trauma being experienced by Nigerians as a result of erratic power supply.

The different types of myths surrounding generator use like old generators make the loudest noise and the use of generators as status symbols were also dispelled in the episode which also revealed Ufoma’s (Bimbo Akintola) love for the widower, Professor Johnbull.

Wrapping up the episode in his characteristic manner, Professor Johnbull who posited that the problem was as old as time, made a case for alternative sources of electricity generation, good neighbourliness and cessation of vandalism of electricity facilities.

  • PROFESSOR JOHNBULL harps on discipline

    PROFESSOR JOHNBULL harps on discipline

IN his characteristic manner, Kanayo O. Kanayo has visited his angst on Junior Pope, who stars as Churchill, his son in Globacom’s TV series, Professor Johnbull. Churchill was heavily rebuked by his father for falling foul of environmental sanitation laws in the last episode of the programme.

Also at the butt of KOK’s wrath is Yomi Fash-Lanso (Olaniyi) who runs a restaurant in the sitcom. While Churchill was arrested by sanitation authorities for littering the environment, Olaniyi’s restaurant was sealed off for not having a functional toilet.

Viewers had waited anxiously to find out if Professor Johnbull who always toes the line of moral rectitude will sing a different tune when his own son goes on the wrong side of the law.

Of course, the erudite professor did not disappoint. Though he helped secure the release of his son, Churchill, from detention, he told him later that he deserved to be locked up for one week for what he did.

He added that if he had known the full details of Churchill’s offence, he would not have lifted a finger to help him. “You deserve to be locked up for one week. Oh yes. That you were arrested for littering the environment is a hard nut for me to process,” he lamented.

He then turned to Olaniyi. “I have been meaning to ask you, why don’t you have a toilet at your gastronomic laboratory?” As the restauranteur looked on in confusion, the Prof simplified it for him, “I mean your buka.” Olaniyi apologised and explained he once had a toilet facility but that it had broken down and signaled readiness to repair it.

Nollywood multiple award winner and Glo ambassador, OC Ukeje, made a guest appearance in the episode which was titled Mobile Dustbin. The Professor rounded off the episode by exposing the consequences of filthy environment and the need for members of the public to consciously cultivate the culture of proper disposal of wastes.

  • Gender discrimination pooh-poohed in Professor Johnbull

Gender discrimination pooh-poohed in Professor Johnbull

The Glo-sponsored TV drama series, Professor Johnbull has entered episode seven with the satire focusing on the issue of gender discrimination which has been condemned globally.

The programme which was aired at 8.30 pm last Tuesday on NTA network and on NTA International on Channels 251 on DSTV as well as Startimes, dwelled extensively on the need for parents to eschew discriminations against girl-child and the need to treat all children fairly.

The episode began when Athan (Stan Kamandi) met a nurse on the street who informed him that his wife delivered a beautiful baby girl.  But he was visibly angry and replied the nurse: ”don’t tell me again. I am running away.”  The nurse asked him “to where?”   Running as fast as he could, he answered: ”Cotonou”.

Athan later appeared at Olaniyi (Yomi Fash-Lanso)’s nkwobi joint in the company of Samson (Ogus Baba) who pleaded with Olaniyi to allow Athan to hide in the back room, explaining that he needs a place to hide after his wife delivered the fifth girl. Olaniyi who refused vehemently, claiming that Athan will devour his nkwobi later accepted and quickly told him to hide in the kitchen.  Unfortunately, Professor Johnbull’s house maid, Caro (Mercy Jonson-Okojie), suddenly showed up to buy nkwobi for the professor.

Caro eventually got to know of Athan and Samson’s presence when Samson mistakenly laughed while listening to their conversation.  Caro moved closer and discovered the two of them hiding, but Olaniyi prevailed on her to keep it secret.

The bubble however busted when Caro revealed the secret to Mendoya (Funky Mallam) and this got to Professor Jonhbull’s knowledge. The Professor who initially rebuked Caro and Mendoya for spreading a rumour ordered his daughter Elizabeth (Queen Nwokoye) to authenticate the veracity of the rumour which she discovered to be true.

It was after this that Professor Johnbull led a delegation to Olaniyi’s shop only to meet an unyielding nkwobi seller who said Athan was not in his shop. The emeritus professor said “I have on good authority that Athan is practicing refugeeism here”.  After persistent probing, Olaniyi pointed to where Athan was hiding. The Professor and his search party moved in immediately and found him hiding in a corner at the back of the kitchen.

Professor Johnbull quickly cautioned them not to hurt him and he was brought out peacefully.

Professor Johnbull then took over.  ”How could you? How could you engage in this outdated principle, absolute pre-historic lifestyle, antediluvian?” and Athan was forced to protest saying “ Ah Prof, it is enough, all these curses are for me, wetin  I do?”  But Olaniyi interjected: “wait, he is not cursing you, he is speaking English, Olodo.”

Athan, subsequently apologised and requested for a phone and made a reconciliatory  phone call to his wife, while Professor Johnbull rounded off by saying” ”Boy or Girl, you need to treat them well and their future will be bright.”

The repeat episode of Professor Johnbull aired on Friday at the same time on the same stations.

  • PROFESSOR JOHNBULL exposes deceitful suitor in episode 6

PROFESSOR JOHNBULL exposes deceitful suitor in episode 6

THE hilarious T.V drama series Professor Johnbull, sponsored by Globacom, in its sixth episode exposed the antics of overseas-based Nigerian men who come back home in search of a wife.

The episode which aired on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. on NTA International, NTA Network and NTA on StarTimes also revealed the gullibility of young, Nigerian girls who fall prey to this practice. Entitled Half Bread and Puff-Puff, the episode began with Ufoma (Bimbo Akintola) hawking yam and was spotted by Malik (Sani Danja) who tried to woo her. Bimbo dismissed his advances by laughing it off. Ufoma rued her past experience with a man who had ruined her life when Malik asked her to marry him.

The opening scene flipped to another one where Flash Boy was seen also trying to woo Jumoke (Bidemi Kosoko) who was not moved by his words. They both stumbled on Malik and Ufoma as they walked down the street.

Jumoke was attracted to Malik and wondered what he was doing with Ufoma. “Who’s that guy, dressed so fine following Ufoma, yam seller without certificate?” She said. She pulled Malik away and tried to sell herself to him when Malik told her he was looking for a wife. When Malik asked who Flash Boy was, Jumoke called him “half bread”, a boy she uses to pass time when she’s bored. Malik proposed instantly.

The chemistry between them jelled and they moved to Olaniyi’s restaurant to celebrate their “love”. Jumoke who is described by Professor Johnbull as the “prevaricator” lied to Olaniyi that she had known Malik for five years.

Troubled, Ufoma led Professor Johnbull (Kanayo O. Kanayo), Udo Etuk (Ime Bishop) and Mai Doya (Funky Mallam) to Olaniyi’s restaurant where the drama climaxed. The bubble burst for Malik when Udo Etuk revealed that he overheard him speaking to his wife in Spain.

They all converged on the professor’s home to resolve the crisis. Patience Ozokwor, who played the role of Madam Christiana, appeared on the scene with her daughter and recounted the experience of her daughter with a man who married her, got her pregnant and abandoned her.

The theme of love was juxtaposed with deceit in this hilarious episode. The idea of preference for overseas based suitors was ridiculed. The episode imparted salient messages such as the need for due diligence in all
