  • Political prostitutes

Crossing carpet from one political party in normal democracies is very rare. The last time this happened in the United Kingdom was sometimes in the 1970s when some members of the British Labour Party left to form, along members of the old Liberal Party, the Social Democratic Party. They did not cross over to the Conservative party. In the USA the so-called Dixiecrats who were members of the Democratic Party and who were mostly racists holding on to the old slave-holding and racist past in those states south of the Mason – Dixon line, left to join the Republican Party, the party of Abraham Lincoln which in modern times has ironically become a racist party against the tradition of its founders. In these democracies nowadays one would rather stand as Independents or quit politics entirely than cross carpet for the purpose of getting elected to any electoral positions.

But in our clime and in our recent past, it was unusual to witness the current trend in Nigeria where politicians go up and down like a yoyo sleeping one night in one party and waking up the following night in a totally different party. In our recent past, especially during the First Republic, people formed different parties if they disagreed with their old parties. This was the case with Chief S.L Akintola’s party, United Peoples Party when he left the Action Group and KO Mbadiwe’s Democratic Party when in he left the NCNC. Sleep-walking from political party to another as it is the case today started in the Second Republic when the likes of Busari Adelakun, Akin  Omoboriowo and Chief Sunday  Afolabi crossed over from the  UPN unashamedly to the NPN. Of course in my lifetime I have seen strange things happen in Nigerian politics such as Dr. Michael Okpara and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu joining the NPN and even the stalwarts of the old Action Group the trio of G. S. Ikokwu , Anthony Enahoro and J.S Tarka who were opposed to reconciliation in the old Action Group deserting Obafemi Awolowo to join his enemies in the NPN.

But we have never witnessed the kind of political prostitution going on now in current Nigerian politics where a former presidential flag bearer of one party would unashamedly cross over to attempt to get elected in to office of governor on the platform of a party he ran against flippantly saying that there is not much difference between the two parties! What dishonesty!. If politicians expect to be taken seriously, they must stay the course and show that they are not in politics for their bellies alone. There must be a higher calling than just making money and living well without work as most of our politicians tend to do.

Recently Tom Ikimi  and  Ali Modu Sheriff the former governor of Borno crossed over to the PDP apparently to enjoy stomach infrastructure while pretending they left because of lofty reasons. For the former governor of Borno  to have been accepted into the PDP speaks volumes about what kind of party it is especially because of the current tragedy that has befallen Borno and the entire North-eastern part of Nigeria where some of us including myself invested part of our youth in helping to build. As for Ikimi, I was surprised when he said he is proud to have been a former foreign minister of Nigeria in a regime that was expelled from the Commonwealth when a national of our country was its Secretary-general, and a regime that defrauded the country of close to $10 billion spirited out of the country and lodged in private accounts some of which will never be found. Instead of boasting of being the regime’s foreign minister, Ikimi should cover his face in shame because he served in a regime that will go down in infamy.  In the history of contemporary Africa, never has so few destroyed the lives of so many in so short a time.

Perhaps in the interest of our country, our leaders ought to take more seriously the mission of leadership in this benighted country. We cannot afford politics without principles and commitment. Political parties need to be known for where they stand on any issue. We cannot run our country on parties that change principles like taffeta and chameleon. If we are not careful in this country politicians will be totally disconnected from the people that there will be no need for political parties and we may therefore be forced to embrace the Egyptian or Indonesian model of guided democracy in which the military will play a dominant part which will be unfortunate and not in the long term interest of our country. Without their knowing it, politicians are gradually becoming the grave-diggers of democracy.

  • Prostitutes seek new life

    Prostitutes seek new life

Prostitutes operating at the sprawling slum in Ijora Badia by Bale Bus Stop before the popular Ijora Seven-Up Bridge in Lagos have expressed the readiness to leave the “business” if the state government could resettle and empower them.

The densely populated slum is said to be home to close to a million people. Apart from the fact that residents in most parts of the area are living with filth, most of the women are into prostitution. A girl, her mother and grandmother are there in the same trade.

The coordinator of a Non-governmental Organisation (NGO), ‘Empowering Women to Begin New Life Initiative’, Ms Anietie Mbosowo, held a preaching/ counseling session in the area.

Men and women were in smoking spree. Children who are out of school walked bare-foot in the filthy area.

Over 90 percent of the houses in the area are built with planks and each of the rooms has just enough space for a six or eight spring beds or mattresses. The plank houses are so closely built that it was difficult passing through the corridors.

While most of the idle men were smoking heavily, the females, some of them pregnant, were waiting for their “customers” even in the afternoon to earn a living.

Some of the prostitutes who responded to inquiries said they go to church or mosque to worship God but they still have to return to the same evil environment and trade because they have no alternative for now.

A woman who is in her 60s, who confirmed that she is a grandmother, said some organisations had been trying to give them another focus to life, but without empowerment.

Some of them said that even when they make plans to stop, they are pulled back to the environment as there is no other place for them. The grandmother prostitute said recently, a man who pretended to be a pastor, duped them of millions of naira after an Alhaji did same since they are not used to saving their money in banks.

She said some of them pay as much as N18,000 per month to their landlords as rent and for security.

Mbosowo appealed to the state governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola; his wife, Dame Abimbola, other female political appointees, the Christian community in the state and every Nigerian to come to the rescue of the women and their children.

She said her organisation had tried over the years to cater for some of them but she has limitations as she has no sponsors or support from any quarters apart from her salary.

She expressed the fear that insecurity in the society might continue as long as those people are left as they are.

She gave her e-mail contact as: newlifefoundations @yahoo.com, and animbos 2005@yahoo.com.

  • Lagos brothels expel underage prostitutes, issue code of conduct to others

Lagos brothels expel underage prostitutes, issue code of conduct to others

THINGS are no longer the same at a Lagos brothel popularly called Odinwo (Yoruba word for reduced service charge) since The Nation published a story on the mode of operation of the prostitutes in the brothel on July 27. Insiders at the brothel located a short distance from Sawmill Bus-stop at Ifako, Gbagada, confirmed that much to our correspondent.

Before The Nation published the story headlined ‘Revealed: Lagos slave camp where underage girls are recruited into prostitution’, the brothel was notorious for a racket organised by a prostitution ring similar to what obtains in Italy.

It was gathered that the July 27 story rattled not only the operators of the brothel but other similar businesses in Gbagada, Oworonsoki and Bariga areas of Lagos. An inside source at Odinwo said the girls started moving out in droves as soon as they read the story.

Our report on the brothel had indicated that teenage girls were being lured into the prostitution ring with promises of a better future. Upon recruitment, the girls were placed under the tutelage of older and more experienced prostitutes called aunties, for a period ranging from six months to about two years. Within that period, the young girl is made to sleep with men and surrender their earnings to the aunty.

However, The Nation can authoritatively report that the managers of the brothel and several others in the Bariga and Oworonsoki areas have taken steps to rid them of underage prostitutes. According to a source, the brothels hurriedly ferried all the young girls into unknown places the morning the report hit the newsstand. By the evening of that day, all the girls were said to have been gathered somewhere and given money to transport themselves back to their respective homes.

“On the day the report was published, the proprietors of the brothel, fearing that the police could storm the place, took all the girls to a hideout to pass the night. The following morning, which was a Sunday, they gathered all the girls and gave them money to go back to their homes,” the source said.

The source also disclosed that one of the proprietors, while lamenting his loss, said about 28 young girls had to leave the brothel, leaving him with only mature prostitutes. “It was a serious thing. The man was driven to tears. He said about 28 girls had to leave his brothel, leaving him to make do with the meager income from older prostitutes.”

Describing what led to the crisis as pure greed, the source said it was believed that one of the underage prostitutes must have invited the media after her aunty extended her period of service beyond the initial six months agreed on.

He said: “The girl was supposed to spend six months to serve the aunty. But after completing the six months, the aunty said she was not impressed with her performance and extended the service period. The girl, the proprietor said, later took her story to the media.”

When our correspondent visited the area shortly after the young girls were expelled, one of the girls, while lamenting her condition, said she was feeling sick because of what had happened. Asked what the ailment was, she looked up, gave a sheepish smile and said: “You don’t know that if one suddenly stops doing what one has been doing for a long time, the person may fall sick?”

She, however, said she was tired of prostitution, saying she was ready to quit if she got a job. “Please help me to get a job. I am tired of this job. I will appreciate anything you can get for me,” she said.

At the brothel, our correspondent observed that the activities of the prostitutes were restricted to inside the walls. And unlike in the past, when the prostitutes, provocatively dressed, canvassed for clients outside the brothels, they had limited their operations to the inside.

They were also said to have been seriously warned by the proprietors to avoid troubles and maintain peace in the brothels.

It was also observed that the prostitutes now play the dumb game. Rather than engage their men in banter that may give away anything on the crisis, they keep mum, preferring to maintain a ‘strictly business’ relationship.

“That has been their attitude since the story was published. They no longer walk round or mix with strangers like they used to do. Now, they simply remain silent without giving anything away”, the source said.

Proprietors of brothels populated by prostitutes in the Gbagada, Oworonsoki and Bariga areas are said to have quickly swung into action to ensure that the underage girls don’t return to the brothels. Stung by the report, the proprietors were said to have come up with a code of conduct for the all the prostitutes in the areas. The prostitutes are made to fill a form specifying their true age, name and state of origin. They are also made to swear an oath not to bring any underage girl into the brothels.

The source said: “The proprietors gave the prostitutes a form to fill. In it, they are asked to fill their names, age and state of origin. I think the people are very serious this time around. That story really disrupted the operations of the cartel in this area.”

Meanwhile, a police team from the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) was said to have visited the brothel to ascertain the veracity of the story. The proprietors of two brothels in the area were said to have been invited and handed a stern warning to stop the practice.

The source, who witnessed the police invitation, said the proprietors have vowed to ensure that underage prostitutes don’t operate in their brothels.

“They are very worried. As I speak with you, they are doing everything possible to make sure that the activities of the young girls don’t affect their business,” the source added.

  • Obi orders prostitutes to vacate Anambra

Obi orders prostitutes to vacate Anambra

Prostitutes aiding and abetting criminals in Anambra State were yesterday given a 7-day eviction from the state alongside their armed robbery friends and associates by Governor Peter Obi.

Obi ordered monarchs to take a census of the people living in their communities and order those with questionable characters to leave the state as he would deal ruthlessly with criminals and prostitutes who harbour them wherever they are found in any community.

Obi was spoke on Saturday at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, the state capital, while presenting about 300 security vehicles fitted with sophisticated security gadgets to vigilante groups in 177 communities and markets and other registered vigilante groups in the State.

The ceremony was graced by heads of all the security agencies in the state, traditional rulers, presidents-general, market leaders, government officials and other stakeholders in the State.

The governor said that the vehicles for each town would be restricted to the community specifically for security purposes. He warned against the use of the vehicles to provide escort to politicians and other non-security related activities.

The governor also presented cheques worth over 250 Million  Naira to all the towns in the State, with no town receiving less than 1.3 Million Naira,  to pay 10 vigilante people per town and for One hundred thousand for fuelling of the vehicles for a year. He said some towns would receive more because they would have more than 10 vigilante people depending on their population and size.

Recalling that the presentation was not the first time the State was procuring vehicles for security, Obi said that his government had purchased over 300 vehicles for security agencies in the State, as well as assisted them in various ways, including building roads in barracks.

Speaking further, he called on the people of the State to intensify prayers to God for them to elect somebody better than himself so that the revolution currently prevailing in the state  can be sustained.

In his vote of thanks, the Chairman of Traditional Rulers Council, Alfred Achebe said that Obi was a blessing to Anambra State.

He commended his development of all sectors of the State and described as “unprecedented”, the measures, projects and things he is doing in Anambra State and for the people of the State.

He frowned at the governor’s announcement of his retirement from politics, insisting that people like him are needed in Nigeria today.

BRAZIL PROSTITUTES LEARN ENGLISH FOR EAGLES FANS

NIGERIAN football fans attending the Confederations Cup and next year’s World Cup in Brazil will not bargain for sex in difficulty as the country’s prostitutes are getting some English lesson to serve their clients with better communication.

The Super Eagles fans0 will be the first Africans to experience the good customer service of the Brazilian sex pros as they will play in the Confederations Cup next month.

Brazilian authorities are giving English lessons to prostitutes so they can give a warmer welcome to tens of thousands of football fans headed here for June’s Confederations Cup, as well as next year’s World Cup.

Belo Horizonte’s 80,000 sex workers are counting on brisk business as authorities predict 40,000 tourists will be in town next month for a total of three matches June 15-30.

A whopping 140,000 are expected to follow for the 2014 World Cup.

With that in mind, the Association of Prostitutes has been offering free English classes to its members at a local mall since March.

“We teach basic expressions but also have demonstrations with erotic paraphernalia so they can learn the names, how to use them and propose them,” said Igor Fuchs, a volunteer who also teaches Spanish and French.

The goal, says association president Cida Vieira, is to provide prostitutes with communication skills to keep clients who don’t speak Portuguese happy – both during the upcoming sports extravaganzas and beyond.

“We deal with ‘gringos’ (foreign men) daily on the streets and in discos,” Vieira said.

“We want to train the girls so they can better serve them.”

So far, 300 prostitutes have signed up.
