  • PZ Cussons kicks off Chemistry contest

Registration for participation in the PZCussons Chemistry Challenge (PZCCC) is now open to SS2 pupils attending public and private secondary schools in Lagos State.

Schools are required to register three pupils for the competition – and this time around, it is mandatory that one of them be a girl.

Organisers say this is to encourage girls to improve in the subject.  There has been no girl among the winners of the last three editions.

The competition was kicked off during a stakeholders’ forum held on  Tuesday, last week at the PZ Cussons office in Ilupeju, Lagos.

Following closure of the registration early February, next year, the pupils would write the first stage Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) examination to determine the best 100 that would proceed to the second stage.

The second stage, which would also feature MCQs, would produce 24 winners who would undergo the Practical- Only at third stage of the competition.  The top six from the third stage would feature in the quiz and practical final scheduled to hold in the second week of April, 2017.

Overall winner of the competition would get N700,000, a laptop, gold medal and trophy; the teacher would get N100,000, and the school N100,000 of laboratory equipment.  The first runner up would get N450,000, a laptop, while the teacher gets N80,000, and he school, N80,000 laboratory equipment.  The second runner up will get N100,000 less than the first; and the school and teacher get N10,000 less.  The third runner up would get N250,000 and a laptop; and N60,000 for his/her teacher and school.

The competition will also feature a two-stage teachers’ teaser, which would be done online.

Chairman of the Advisory board for the competition, Prof Oladele Osibanjo, attested to the transparency of the grading of the PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge (PZCCC).

Osibanjo said the board overseas the process from the selection of questions to grading of scripts in a transparent manner.

“We involve a lot of people.  It is a process.  We involve university people who teach 100 Level  Chemistry to set questions in all areas of chemistry, and we invite secondary chemistry teachers too.  We provide quality assurance to ensure questions are high class.  The grading process has no human manipulation because computers do the marking.  Everything is done above board,” he said.

Executive Director, Corporate Services, Mrs Yomi Ifaturoti, said the firm, through the PZCussons Foundation, decided to intervene in chemistry to promote interest in the subject which encompasses what its business is all about.

“The foundation came to being in 2007 and we focused on five areas including education, water. We discovered that there was gap – that children were shifting from sciences.  We decided to focus on Chemistry because that is what we do.  The Chemistry Challenge is something we are really proud of,” she said.

Mrs Ifaturoti expressed hope that winners of the competition would one day work for PZCussons.

“After they win, the four finalists come to our office and spend a month. We give them a task and they would do a project.  The plan is that after their education, we hope they come back and if the opportunity exists, we absorb them,” she said.

Director PZCussons  Consumer, Christos Gouras, said there were plans to make the competition national in future.

“The plan is that we will expand in the next four years to other regions of the country. We hope in a few years it will become a national competition,” he said.

Mrs Hannah Oyebanjo of Redwood Consulting, which coordinates the competition on behalf of the foundation, praised PZCussons for keeping faith with the competition in the past four years.

Principal, Abibat Mogaji Senior Secondary School, Agege, Mr Taofeek Adeosun whose school produced the first and second runners up last year, said his school would work harder to win this year again.

PZ Cussons, firm partner on hand washing campaign

TO tackle hygiene-related diseases, such as diarrhoea, which causes death of one in five  children yearly, PZ Cussons has partnered Concern Universal to  launch a hygiene campaign in Lagos as part of activities marking the global hand washing campaign.

Concern Universal is an international development and relief organisation. Its Country Director, Tim Kellow, said diarrhoea causes stunted growth, and death of children under six years could be prevented with proper hand washing, adding that the campaign seeks to sensitise children and adults on good hygiene.

Kellow said: “The biggest cause of diarrhea is not washing our hands correctly, which is with soap. So, this is why we have launched this campaign. We have done this for the past three years in rural areas of Benue and Cross Rivers states. We do this because we are concerned about the fact that about 150,000 children die every year in this country just through diarrhea. This drastically affects their health in their adult life and ability to learn in school.

“This is the reason we have the phrase – ‘prevention is better than cure’. And this is the reason we want to launch a campaign that is going to help change the situation. So, this is why for three years in a row, Concern Universal has partnered the PZ Cussons Foundation to make a difference on this subject and we are very proud to be here,” Kellow said.

He further said during the one-month campaign children would be trained through fun activities to become hygiene heroes, who would further train their friends and families to inculcate the habit of hand washing.

PZ Cussons Foundation Head, Corporate Affairs, Yomi Ifaturoti, said: “The global hand washing day will hold at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos on October 15. It will be filled with a lot of excitements. This is necessary because we need to catch this children’s attention young, so that they will know that they have to wash their hands regularly. PZ Cussons Foundation thrives on CSR initiative that looks at health and hygiene.

“The reason I am proud to say this is because at PZ Cussons, we do not just do business, but we do business responsibly,” Mrs Ifaturoti added.

Concern Universal’s Brand Ambassador, Sunny Neji also, added that his interest in the campaign was borne out of his passion to assist in educating people about health and hygiene which is the only way he could give back to his society.

The veteran Oruka crooner would drive the global hand washing campaign with his self-composed song titled: “Wash your hand O!”

    PZ Cussons declares N1.99b dividends

PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc will be distributing about N1.99 billion to its shareholders as cash dividends for the immediate past business year as the conglomerate struggled to curtail the negative impact of economic slowdown and foreign exchange constraint on its operations.

The board of directors of PZ Cussons recommended that a dividend per share of 50 kobo be paid to shareholders in the book of the company by September 23, 2016. The dividend will become payable on October 7, 2016.

Key extracts of the audited report and accounts of PZ Cussons Nigeria for the year ended May 31, 2016 showed that turnover stood at N69.53 billion in 2016 as against N73.13 billion in 2015. Operating profit dropped from N6.65 billion to N3.25 billion. Profit before tax also declined from N6.56 billion to N3.15 billion. Profit after tax declined from N4.57 billion to N2.13 billion. Earnings per share dropped from N1.02 to 47 kobo. However, the group’s total assets increased from N67.39 billion to N74.43 billion.

Chairman, PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc, Chief Kola Jamodu, said the performance was a relatively fair performance when viewed against the background of the tough macroeconomic environment characterized by scarcity of foreign exchange, price hikes, weakening consumer demand and upheavals in some part of the country.

He said the group has continued to implement strategic initiatives aimed at increasing shareholders’ value and sustaining long-term growth.

According to him, the group continued innovative projects aimed at improving efficiencies in supply chain while increased attention was brought on its core brands.

He added that the group streamlined its product portfolio to make the business more agile in an increasingly competitive and fast changing market.

“Overall, the company did well to hold its position in the market restricting the negative impact of the prevailing adverse conditions and performed satisfactorily against peers in the sector,” Jamodu said

He added that the group maintains a strong cash position which puts it in a flexible and agile position to fund its operations and exploit any emerging business opportunities.

PZ Cussons woos global suppliers to Nigeria

    •Assures shareholders of sustained returns

As part of its  commitment to local content development and reduction of import-dependent components of its operations, PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc has intensified efforts to woo its global suppliers to set up operations in Nigeria.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Christos Giannopoulos, who spoke with newsmen during the visit of the directors and top management of the conglomerate to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), said the company has over the decades demonstrated its commitments to the Nigerian economy through its continuing investments and development of its domestic manufacturing capacity.

One of the earliest companies in Nigeria, PZ Cussons Nigeria, was incorporated as a limited liability company in 1948. It became a public limited liability company in 1972 and was subsequently listed on the NSE in 1974.

Chairman, PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc, Chief Kola Jamodu, who beat the gong to close the market for the day, assured all stakeholders of PZ Cussons’ commitments to delivering values to investors while supporting Nigeria’s national economic development.

Giannopoulos said PZ Cussons believes that Nigeria has great prospects irrespective of the current challenges, which illustrated the recent investments and ongoing efforts to bring its global suppliers to Nigeria.

According to him, the company is doing everything within its powers to attract its suppliers to set up their operations in Nigeria.

He pointed out that the company imports majority of its raw material, noting that if the suppliers could set up operations in the country, it would reduce the cost of production and improve the bottom line.

He noted that Nigeria has a lot of raw materials, which are not being optimised, adding that Nigeria would get greater values for its raw materials if it increases its ability to create as this would help reduce over dependence on import products.

According to him, the company is working hard to reduce the amount of foreign goods that comes into the country, which is one of the reasons that it brought its associate companies and  secured 26 hectares of land, which allows it to produce palm oil in Nigeria.

“PZ has brought its associate companies and got 26 hectares of land plantation, which allows us to produce palm oil in Nigeria. Nigeria was once the biggest palm plantation in the world. So, we are playing our part to be able to reduce the amount of foreign goods that Nigeria requires. The rest of our businesses are at growth stage and the old brands always looking to find the opportunities with the consumers as their tastes are changing,” Giannopoulos said.

He assured shareholders that the company has been well-positioned to leverage on emerging opportunities in the industry to boost profitability and increase shareholders value.

He noted that the fundamental of the company and investors’ confidence in the company remain strong, pointing out that PZ Cussons has been on NSE since 1974 and since then it has paid dividend every year.

He urged the government to ensure stable operating environment for companies by implementing policies that allow existing and new companies to make long-term plan for investments and growth.

“Business requires stability, the most important thing is for government to put in place policies or enforce policies for creating stable environment on a long-term basis,” Giannopoulos said.
