    Monarchs rally against post-election crises

Determined to prevent post-election conflicts in their domains, northern Christian traditional rulers met in Abuja to forge peace in the region, reports Sunday Oguntola

They walked majestically to the hall, resplendent in their traditional attires. Not a few cast a fanciful look at the splendor they displayed. They had come from different clans, communities and environs. They are Christian traditional rulers from northern states in Abuja, the federal capital, for two reasons: One, according to the chief convener, Elder Olaiya Phillips, was to pray for peaceful polls next month.

Two, according to the rulers, was to brainstorm how to prevent post-election crisis in their domains.

Hell literally visited them in 2011 and many of them were determined not to allow a repeat of the orgies this time around.

These were the moods last week during a parley by Christian traditional rulers in Abuja. The conference was organised by the Northern States Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF) as parts of its strategies to arrest worsening insecurity in the north-east.

Welcoming the royal fathers to the forum, Phillips, who is the chair of NOSCEF, stated that their coming together was imperative to forestall any possible backlashes from the forthcoming elections. He lamented the untold hardships and ruinations that many of their subjects and communities suffered in the past.

Except they rise to do things differently and build bridges of peace and harmony, worse scenarios might be experienced in their communities again, he warned. He said: “We can all remember the scenes across the North following the last general election. The needless loss of hundreds of Christians and Muslims in post election violence is a memory that still feels raw.

“I do not know if we will see a repeat of such reprisals following this year’s elections but as a community we should be prepared. And as community leaders, those here today should be ready for whatever events unfold.”

He added: “You must speak up for your communities. You must be the ones to make sure that politicians understand. You must pray that the Northern Christian community is better represented at all levels of Nigerian politics following elections.

“You must create and embody the forums of discussion between our community and Muslim community to settle disputes before violence occurs. You must make your communities understand that politics is not worth taking and losing life and limb.

“You must provide the glue that our communities desperately need to hold our nation together, before the first blow lands or the first bullet is fired. We – the Northern Christian community – must make sure that whoever wins, the unity, secularity and integrity of our nation is preserved.”

Phillips urged them to support “candidates that win elections in your communities and prevent post-election violence or crises.” This, he stated, must be their biggest preoccupation for the next few months until the incoming administration is stabilised.

He added that the peaceful coexistence of political opponents and subjects with differing political inclinations should become their main objectives, stating that the more peaceful their domains are after the polls will indicate how much efforts and commitment they have invested after the parley.

Phillips, a businessman, urged them to consider themselves as peace builders and agents of transformation. Royal fathers, he added, must ensure peace in their domains at all costs, stressing that the cost of allowing crises would be too much to consider for their communities and the nation.

“We must provide the glues that our nation need to stay together. We must ensure that our communities remain one united entity regardless of our political differences,” he further stated.

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, commended the monarchs for coming together to work for peace in their domains. Lauding the forum, he said: “The more you know each other, the stronger you become. You are able to share challenges and be stronger than you used to be.”

He bemoaned the spate of violence recorded after every election in the country, saying that all stakeholders, like the traditional rulers, must synergies to prevent such reoccurrence this time around.

Oritsejafor called for the enthronement of a fair and just electoral system to minimise some of these backlashes, urging Nigerians to become committed to building a nation of equity and peace.

Done with the niceties, the traditional rulers broke into groups to deliberate on why peace is always a challenge during election period and practical ways of working against breakdown of law and order.

Rising from the closed-door deliberation, the traditional rulers resolved to build peace in their communities. They also vowed to accommodate all political leanings and work with candidates to prevent violence. They said they will mobilise their subjects to reject violence and candidates with such tendency, while also empowering them to peaceful choices.

They also retired into a prayer session coordinated by the immediate former chairman of NOSCEF, Evangelist Matthew Owojaiye. Owojaiye challenged them to break down stereotypes and spiritual forces instigating violence in northern parts of the country.

God, he said, has the powers to stop the devil in his track and restore peace to beleaguered regions. The monarchs raised their voices in utter supplication to God for peaceful elections next month as well as harmonious relations after the polls.

Ajimobi’s daughters steal show at campaign rally

Political campaign took another dimension at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, as the beautiful daughters of the incumbent governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, stormed the venue of their father’s re-election campaign uniformly dressed in traditional attires that bore the picture of their father and canvassing support for his governorship ambition.

Pursuing his re-election on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajimobi hopes to floor his opponents in the upcoming election through the noble means. Demonstrating solid support for him are his children, led by eldest daughter, Bisola Kola-Daisi. They literally stole the show as they waved their brooms, the symbol of the APC.

Besides being a successful government functionary, Ajimobi is reputed as a doting father who does not hesitate to give his children the best he can afford.

Rivers govt explains why Jonathan can’t use stadium for rally

The Rivers State government has explained why President Goodluck Jonathan cannot use the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex on January 28.

The government, through the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, yesterday in Port Harcourt, also urged Jonathan and the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, to rein in their “mad dogs”.

The state government said: “At a different time and under different circumstances, the Rivers State government would have ignored the PDP’s members’ ranting (to force their way into the Rivers State government-owned Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex to hold presidential rally), but with the party’s (PDP’s) penchant for violence and its bombings of people and property all over the state, it is pertinent that the Rivers State government raises this alert and sounds a note of warning to the PDP that the Rivers State government will not trifle with its responsibility to guarantee the safety of life and property, irrespective of who is affected.

“The matter of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex is a simple one. The complex is still under construction. As a work site, it is an unsafe environment for use at this time. The PDP makes reference to the fact that the APC had held its rally at the same venue. What they failed to mention is that the contractor was moved out of site during the time the APC’s rally held and remobilised to site right after that rally.

“With less than five months to the end of its tenure, the Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi administration is working on ensuring the completion of all its projects before the handover date of May 29. With that being the case, the River State government cannot move its contractors out of site at this time.

“Unlike the PDP that has consistently refused the APC the use of stadia and other facilities in Abuja and other states where it is in control, the Rivers State government has magnanimously offered the PDP the use of the Liberation Stadium Elekahia, which is also a state facility.”

The Rivers government also stated that the resolve of the PDP leaders to unlawfully break into the Adokiye Amiesimaka sports complex was to fulfill the threat issued by some members of the party (PDP) that they would burn down the complex.

  • Toriola’s Commonwealth rally adjudged best in 2014

Toriola’s Commonwealth rally adjudged best in 2014

The exceptional rally between Nigeria’s Segun Toriola and Singapore’s Gao Ning at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland has been adjudged the best by American-based sports media, SportsNet.

The rally was all over the globe and the Chairman, International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), Adham Sharara, who analysed the Top-100 plays of the year on America-based SportsNet made this known.

“My particular interest is to watch the Top-100 Sports Plays as shown by a network called SportsNet and I also like the top plays by ESPN. I particularly also enjoy the Top-100 “Sports Bloopers”. These are “misses”, own goals, terrible mistakes, funny incidents, etc. Of course the most amazing on SportsNet are the Top-10 plays of the year. These are really something to watch and admire the skills and abilities of top sport stars,” he said.

The erstwhile ITTF President added: “Then I watched the Top-100 plays of the year and saw some amazing plays. Some of these athletes have incredible abilities. Again, the bulk of the plays were in the traditional North-American professional sports. Some amazing “catches” in American Football, some amazing “throws” in Baseball, some amazing “dunks” in Basketball, and some incredible “stick-play” in Ice Hockey, and some fantastic scoring in Soccer.

“Lo and behold, to my amazement, for play number 3, I mean in the top 3 of all 100 plays of the year, was a long rally in table tennis. I was stunned. Table tennis made it to the top 3? I could not believe my eyes. It was truly an amazing rally between Segun Toriola of Nigeria and Gao Ning of Singapore in a semi-final team match at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. It was what seemed like an endless rally. To the experts in our sport this may not be the best table tennis point of the year, but to the TV producers, and I suppose based on what they saw, this was the best rally in table tennis for 2014, and one of the top 3 best sports play of the year.”

Sharara believes this was a plus to table tennis globally, while charging the ITTF board presided over by German Thomas Weikert to continue to promote the sport globally.

Jonathan’s re-election rally: Anyim, Aliyu, Shagari escape death

    •Dignitaries injured as podium caves-in
•North will vote Jonathan, says Maku

The fourth edition of the pro- Jonathan  rally organised by Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) almost turned tragic yesterday in Minna, Niger State.

A N10million  podium on which  eminent  supporters including  the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF),Chief Pius Anyim, Niger State  Governor, Babangida Aliyu, Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Mukhtar Shagari and Kogi State Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi, and several  ministers  were seated for the rally at the Trade Fair Complex unexpectedly  gave way, sparking pandemonium.

    They scampered to safety.

    Several people were injured.

Among them were the governor’s wife, Hajiya Jumai Babangida Aliyu, her protocol officer, Senator-elect for Niger East, Dr. Shem Zagbayi Nuhu, the state Director General of Protocol, Captain M. Baro, the Director General, Public Affairs, Alhaji Tanko Dada and security officials.

Some of the injured were ferried by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) ambulances to a private hospital and the Minna General Hospital.

Some of the dignitaries and supporters saw the development as a bad omen and left the venue.

As the crowd began to thin out, Governor Aliyu took the microphone and appealed to them to return.

He asked them to regard the incidence as a sacrifice and sign of success and victory for President Jonathan.

He blamed the collapse of the stand on the huge crowd.

“The place was overcrowded by dignitaries, their security and protocol officers.  That was why the podium caved in,” he said.

The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Gabriel Aduda, said the situation was brought about by the devil.

“Whatever happened here, the devil is a liar. No weapon fashioned against us and Jonathan shall succeed. What happened was because the crowd was too much,” he said.

Addressing the rally after a break, Information Minister,  Labaran Maku,  said that the entire North is set to retain President Goodluck Jonathan in Aso Rock next year.

He dismissed Northerners opposed to a fresh mandate for the President as insignificant.

He said such opponents were “just babbling,” adding that “everyone knows the North is ready to give the President a chance without quarrel or struggle.

“Everyone knows that the power shift in Nigeria is eight years, it is only the Southsouth that has not been in power before. All, other zones in Nigeria have been in power.

“So why should we say their son should not serve for eight years when others did? These are the people who are keeping our economy going; people who want national unity and stability.

“President Goodluck Jonathan is entitled to four more years and the North is ready to give it to him without quarrel or struggle. The North will vote for Jonathan in 2015 and wherever the North Central goes, that is the way Nigeria goes. North Central will vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 overwhelmingly.”

Also speaking, the SGF said over 1.2 million people from the zone endorsed the President for another term.

Governor Aliyu said that the administration has united Nigeria and has been doing its best to resolve the security challenge in the country.

He said:”People are planning to use insecurity as an issue against us. We know it is an issue, we are concerned about the devastation on a part of the nation but we are trying to ensure that insecurity is surmounted within the shortest time.

“God has used President Jonathan to unite Nigeria and He would continue to use him to take this nation forward.”

The rally organisers in a statement at the end of the event said the VIP stand collapsed “due to overcrowding” as the aides of VIPs  wanted  to stay with their bosses.

It said: “Some of the aides sustained minor injuries and were treated. The ceremony continued as the VIPs were relocated immediately to the rally podium and the function continued.

“Before the ceremony ended the SGF and the Governor sent for situation report from the hospital on the injured and they came back that most of the affected people have been treated and discharged.”

TAN Director of Communications, Dr. Udenta O. Udenta, described the incidence as unfortunate but noted that it did not diminish the ceremony.

Ribadu denies inviting Nyako’s henchmen to rally

A governorship aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has distanced himself from the presence of two former Governor Murtal Nyako’s henchmen at his rally.

The men, former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Kobis Ari Thimnu and ex-party chairman, Alhaji Mijinyawa Umaru Kugama, were accused of misadvising the former governor and ruining the economy of Adamawa State.

Ribadu, speaking to reporters in Yola, through the Director- General of the Mallam Nuhu Ribadu Campaign organisation (MNRCO), Mr. Kevin Peters, said the two men were never invited to his campaign launch, but they surfaced suddenly at the PDP headquarters in Yola, even before Ribadu could address the party.

Peters said when Ribadu came, thousands of people from PDP, All Progressives Grand Aliance (APGA), Labour Party, Kowa Party and All Progressives Congress (APC) converged on the PDP office in solidarity with him because of their belief in him.

He said the men might have accompanied the people who thronged the party office when Ribadu visited the place.

Peters said: “The constitution provides for freedom of association. This explains why they came. Besides, they are indigenes of Adamawa State, going by the constitution. As far as we are concerned, nobody invited them. I think they gate-crashed into the event.”

He advised those thronging the MNRCO to go to their wards and register for the PDP.

Peters thanked those who came to the launch and hailed PDP elders for turning out en masse in solidarity with Ribadu.

  • Group to hold rally for the blind

To stem discrimination against visually-impaired persons, the Nigerian Society for the Blind (NSB) is set to mark its 9th White Cane Day awareness in Lagos with the theme: Fitness walk for sight.

Speaking at a press briefing held last Monday at NSB Vocational Training Centre in Oshodi, the NSB chairperson, Mrs Biola Agbaje, said the walk was aimed at sensitising the public on the need to accord respect to the visually impaired and importance of the use of the white cane for the mobility of the blind.

The use of a white cane, Agbaje said, is a symbol that a visually-impaired person is approaching, noting that no matter how trained they are, it is always difficult for the visually-impaired people to move around. “This is why they need our help and assistance in finding their way around,” she said.

She also said the common practice that a visually-active person must be the one to take the visually-impaired around should be over.

Agbaje, who was represented by the chairman, Organising Committee of the White Cane Day and Executive Council Member of the NSB, Dr. Olu Falomo, said that the white cane had been accepted globally as a symbol of the visually-impaired, adding that the awareness was to sensitise the public on the significance of the material.

She said the event would encourage visually-impaired citizens to use the white cane, stating that in other climes, people with the same sight condition use trained dogs to move around.

She, however, stressed that the event would be an avenue to keep participants fit, especially people who have obesity.

Wife of former Lagos State Governor, Mrs Obafunmilayo Johnson, will lead the rally scheduled to hold on Saturday from 7am to 10am from the National Stadium in Surulere to Costain Roundabout and back to the stadium.

  • Jonathan, others for PDP’s mega rally in Osogbo

Jonathan, others for PDP’s mega rally in Osogbo

President Goodluck Jonathan is scheduled to lead the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains to Osogbo, Osun State capital tomorrow for a mega rally in support of the party’s candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

Expected to be on the entourage of Jonathan include his deputy, Namadi Sambo, the PDP National Chairman  Alhaji Adamu Muazu and Board Of Trustees Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih.

The State PDP Publicity Secretary, Prince Bola Ajao, who addressed reporters yesterday in Osogbo, said other party stalwarts expected at the event include the BOT members like Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Alhaji Shuaib Oyedokun and others.

Ajao said the visit was designed to rally support for the Omosore’s candidature.

Ajao, who disclosed that the rally will hold at Osogbo Township Stadium, warned the All Progressive Congress (APC) members not to attempt to sweep the roads after the visit of Jonathan, saying it would be resisted by the PDP.

He said: “They must not try it this time around and if they try to sweep the floor in an attempt to rubbish and humiliate the President, we will resist it.

“We know that is their usual habit and we resisted it in Ikirun recently when they tried to sweep the roads after our campaign in the area.”
