  • RAMON AZEEZ: Mum nearly stopped me from playing football

Prior to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, many Nigerians did not know much about Ramon Azeez even though he was a regular at La Liga Almeria.
Like all Nigerian kids, Azeez began playing football in the Future Pro Academy where he was picked to play for the national U-17 team when Nigeria played host to the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The tournament threw up the young lad as a star player to look out for as he was a regular in the Golden Eaglets’ line up. Nigeria finished in second place behind Switzerland. He quickly moved on to Spain for Almeria Team B where he scored seven goals in 78 appearances earning him promotion to the Almeria main team.
That he was named in the Nigeria provisional 30-man squad ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup surprised many but he went on to make his World Cup debut in a 0–0 draw against Iran.
Six years in Almeria greatly helped him as he signed for Granada CF on a six-month deal. In the just ended season, he was instrumental to Granada return to the elite stage of Spanish football.
Going down memory lane, the Nigeria international said his mum did not support his choice of career. “When I was starting out and made it clear to my mother that I wanted to be a footballer my mum tried to discourage me. She believed that football is meant for unserious kids.”
Azeez in an interview with OLUSOLA ALAO speaks further on Granada contract, family, the Super Eagles and other matters. Excerpts…

HOW do you feel to be part of Granada’s promotion party?

I feel very happy to be part of this promotion party. To be back in the La Liga after years of absence is a great feeling for me.

Who do you dedicate this achievement to?

I dedicate it to my family, my friends and to all my fans worldwide. They always got my back and any step I take in my career.

What is your contract situation with Granada?

I have a contract with Granada will 2022, any information you get elsewhere different from this is false.

You have played for U17, U20 and the Super Eagles, which of these memo ries remains your best?

They all give me great memories. All are great times, but I will stick to the Super Eagles because it is the highest level any player can think of to represent his country. It is usually difficult for any child to leave his parents and travel far away.

How was the feeling when you were leaving Nigeria at the age of 18?

Well, at the beginning it was very tough and difficult; it was complicated for me especially because of the language, but with time I got used to it as I learned and started speaking the language. That was a very important moment for me. But when it comes to what I love doing most, which is playing football, I easily put every other thing aside and go for it.

Who are the players that have in fluence on your career as a role model?

I have some of them that I learnt from and look up to shape my career. They are Deco, Zinedine Zidane, Xavi Harnandez and our own Jay Jay Okocha. They are my role models.

Many African parents want their children to go to school, become doctors, engineer, accountant, how was it between you and your parents on your career choice?

At the beginning, my parent never wanted me to play football. They keep telling me to read my book all the time. My mum in particular did not want to see me play football because she believed that footballers are street boys. She did not want me to be like one of them. But my dad made it easier for me because he has soft spot for the game. After a while, my mum got used to me playing football and allowed me to do what I wanted.

Where is the best stadium you have played so far?

That is Bernabeu, Real Madrid stadium.

You have been called to Super Eagles before, are you hoping for a return?

Yes, I hope so because representing Nigeria, and wearing Nigeria’s colours, is always a privilege for me.  So, whenever I am given the opportunity to represent my country again I will grab it.

Congratulations on your goal against Barcelona B. How did it feel to score again?

I am very happy to score my first goal here with my team and very happy that we were able to secure the three points.

Do you see the goal against Barcelona B as the catalyst for a return to top class football?

Not only scoring a goal but to feature in every game week in week out, that’s the most important thing right now.

Did you have a feeling you might have a good game before that game?

Of course, before I got onto the field I usually do things that would make me happy and get me tune in for games. I employ whatever I see in my surroundings to ginger myself up. And that has always helped me in every game I have played.

After the World Cup, many were shocked that you were no longer invited, what happened?

Well, every coach knows what they are looking for and the calibre of players they want. It’s a thing of joy for any Nigerian player that gets called up to represent the country. There is an element of luck in this profession too.

How frustrating is it that you could not capitalise on your World Cup participation?

I feel very grateful because when things are like this and not going the way we want it, God knows the best and He has better plans for everyone.

How hopeful are you that things will change positively for you?

I am working hard every day and making sure I follow each section of training to get myself on the track always.

Having been in Spain all these years, do you miss Nigeria?

Of course, I do miss home sometimes but there is time for work and there is time for enjoyment. But every December and June, I am always in Nigeria to see my family.

Ramon Azeez vows to win Oliseh’s heart

Super Eagles and UD Almeria midfielder, Ramon Azeez says the most important thing for him is to play regularly for his club so as to get the attention of new Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh.

Azeez featured prominently for UD Almeria last season in the La Liga but got relegated with the club following an all round bad spell but the 22-year-old reckons that consistent display in the first team may earn him a recall to the national team.

“The most important thing right now is to play in your team and do everything with your team and I think with that, one can get the attention of the coach and get invited but the most important thing is to do very well in the team,” he told footballlive.ng.

Not sure if this bold plan of Azeez would work since Sunday Oliseh has reiterated that any player not featuring in the first divisions should not expect a call up.

Azeez was part of Nigeria’s squad to last year’s summer World Cup in Brazil where Nigeria managed to get to the round of 16 before been knocked out by France. He made his debut for Nigeria in the game against Iran where it finished 0-0.

Ramon Azeez: Congo won’t be easy

Former junior  international Ramon Azeez has urged his Super Eagles colleagues to be ready for a determined Congolese side in the opening round of the AFCON qualifiers and as such should be prepared to offer their all to the country. He spoke with SportingLife’s TUNDE LIADI on the forthcoming tie with the Red Devils among other issues.

    EXCERPTS:

It seems just like yesterday that you played for the Golden Eaglets in 2009 and a few years later you were in your first senior World Cup in Brazil. How will you describe the experience thus far?

Yeah! It has never been an easy task but I thank God for the opportunity and the growth. We thank God for the experience with the Golden Eaglets and now that I am with the Super Eagles my watchword will still remain the same: to continue to give my best at all times.

How did you feel when you came on the pitch for the Eagles’ first game against Iran?

I was very happy. I was a bit nervous and fidgety but it didn’t take me time to adjust when I got on the pitch and the rest they say is now history.

Nigeria will be facing the Red Devils of Congo this weekend. How prepared are the Super Eagles?

We are prepared and, as you can see, we train twice a day and we have been sweating it out without stress. We know that Congo will not just lie down and admit defeat before the game is played and it is the more reason we have been training very well and hard so that we can be ready for them. We won’t take them lightly because it is our ambition to qualify again for the Nations Cup.

There was much talk about you leaving Almeria for another club but no deal materialised. What is happening to you and your future in Spain?

For now I am still an Almeria player and I am registered with the team and still doing my best to ensure that we surpass our performance in the league last season.

Were there concrete offers for you in the last transfer window?

Even if I had offers, it is nothing to dwell on for now because I am still an Almeria player and will like to leave it as such.

  • Ramon Azeez: I am very happy at Almería

Ramon Azeez: I am very happy at Almería

Ramon Azeez arrived Spain three years ago from Nigeria to join Almeria and after two seasons in the youth side has broke into the first team, and has done so well in the top flight of Spanish football. He has enjoyed rave review and has been described as the “stopper ” that every football team needs.

After a tough start to the season with Almeria, the former Flying Eagles captain is hooked to the fight to avoid relegation in the La Liga. The Nigerian player had to overcome an ownership tussle in his early days in Spain to become an integral part of the team.

In this interview with vavel.com, the Nigerian youth International talks about his beginnings at the club, his current situation and plans for the future.

Although Azeez has made 9 apperances in La Liga for Almeria this season, he is yet to score. His club is 18th on the league table with 12 points after 14 games and probably will have to fight hard to avoid relegation.

Let’s start from the beginning in Almería. In 2010 the club bought you, but it took you a year before you became effective. What exactly happened and how did you live with that situation?

Ramon Azeez: In Africa it is very difficult to get the roles that are required to come to play in Spain and it took so long to make my move because of cash. I spent a year there and it was really bad because I could not play and all I could do was train by myself, Once the problem was solved, every other thing fell into place .

How was your adjustment to the city and the team?

The adjustment was easy because Almería is a small town and very comfortable. My relationship with my teammates went well from the start. At a point I met great people who made my adaptation very simple.

Since coming to the club you have always worked under the orders of Francisco. How important has been the influence of Francisco?

Francisco is a great person and a great coach. He knows what I can do and since I came to Almería,he has showed he has confidence in me and in my abilities as a player.

What do you think was the secret behind the three straight wins Almeria secured against Valencia, Valladolid and Osasuna?

Winning three straight games in such tough competition is very difficult and even more so considering the spate of negative results as we had, but with confidence and hard work we were able to change our situation.

After the match against Real Madrid, four games against rivals (Celtic, Espanyol, Betis and Granada). What is the mentality of the team?

The mentality of the team is positive. We have to go game by game and always think of winning.

Turning to personal appearance, have we already seen the best of Azeez? Or do you think you can improve and bring more to the team?

I think I can slowly improve and perform better. I just need to keep working hard during training sesssions and prove what I’m capable of doing anytime the manager puts me in a game.

This season we have seen that you improved your work as a destroyer of game in the midfield, but also have ability to reach the opponent’s box. What position are you more comfortable in?

I feel good in any position in midfield, either attached to the defence or closer to the front. I accept any role that the coach gives me on the field.

In the last two seasons you were regular in training with the first team, but only played a few minutes in League against Barcelona B side in the first game of last season. You got a yellow card and had to be changed, how do you remember that game ?

That game is something I do not like to remember because it was not easy to get to the first team. When I saw the first yellow card, it got me even more nervous and I did not really know what I had to do in the field . Then I had to be changed to avoid getting a second yellow card and leave the team a man down .

How was it like making your debut against Barcelona?

For me it was a happy day. Starting against a team like Barcelona, with such world class players involved, was a great joy for me. I have worked hard and have done hours of gym training to keep myself in 100 % shape.

2014 is World Cup year and your country, Nigeria will be in Brazil. Do you think you have a chance of making the Super Eagles team to the mundial?

The truth is that I do not think about the World Cup. I just want to work hard with Almeria and hopefully remain in the La Liga. I hope that by working hard together, the team could remain in Primera Division and hope for bigger things next year. And as for me, I hope to play every possible minute and grow as a player.
