Ronaldo deserves FIFA Best award – Zidane

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said that Cristiano Ronaldo deserved to retain The Best FIFA men’s player award on Monday evening in London, speaking after another personally frustrating domestic showing for the Portuguese in Sunday evening’s 3-0 La Liga victory at home to Eibar at the Bernabeu.

Madrid eased to victory over an out of form Eibar, helped on their way by Paulo Oliveira’s 18th-minute own goal, which was soon followed by a clever Marco Asensio finish past unsighted goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic.

The second half was lower-key until late on when substitute Marcelo rounded off the scoring with a sweet low strike to finish off a superb one-touch move also involving Karim Benzema and Theo Hernandez.

Twenty-four hours before he is likely to beat Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar to another individual award, Ronaldo was again not at his sharpest and missed a second-half one-on-one with Dmitrovic. But Zidane suggested in his postmatch news conference that the 32-year-old’s decisive contribution to last season’s La Liga and Champions League double was all important.

“Ronaldo is the best player of his generation, by a long way,” Zidane said. “He has shown that many times, he makes the difference in the big games.  All his prizes are deserved. He always shows he wants to be the best, and he is.”

Ronaldo is still on just one La Liga goal in 2017-18, from 33 shots, however Zidane said such statistical anomalies were not a concern.

“When Cristiano does not score I get asked always the same thing,” he said. “We are not worried, although it is better when he scores. It is important for him, but the most important is that he is getting chances. This lasts a long time. He is top scorer in the Champions League, and has a chance to score again next week in La Liga.”

Zidane himself is also shortlisted for The Best FIFA’s men’s coach award, alongside Juventus’ Massimiliano Allegri and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte. Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas is also favoured for recognition in the goalkeeper category, where the other nominees are Juve’s Gianluigi Buffon and Bayern Munich shot-stopper Manuel Neuer.

  • Madrid left back Marcelo in £437,000 tax charge

Madrid left back Marcelo in £437,000 tax charge

Spanish prosecutors have accused Real Madrid left back Marcelo of defrauding local tax authorities of nearly half a million euros.

Prosecutors say the Brazil international defrauded authorities of €490,917.70 (£437,539.59) in 2013.

They say the irregularities are related to Marcelo’s use of companies abroad to handle earnings from image rights.

Marcelo, who has been playing  for Real Madrid since moving from Brazilian club Fluminense in 2007, is the latest player to be targeted by tax authorities in Spain.

Last year, Lionel Messi and his father were found guilty on three counts of defrauding tax authorities of €4.1m (£3.65m) from income made from image rights.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Carvalho, Angel di Maria, Javier Mascherano, Radamel Falcao and Fabio Coentrao are among other players investigated by Spanish authorities.

Earlier this month, Carvalho was sentenced to seven months in prison for tax fraud committed while playing for Real Madrid.

However the former Chelsea player, who has won 89 caps for Portugal, is unlikely to spend any time behind bars.

Under Spanish law, jail terms under two years for first time offences are viewed as suspended sentences.

Carvalho is the latest big-name La Liga player to be found guilty of tax fraud, with the highest profile case being that of Messi and his father, Jorge.

The pair were found guilty in July 2016 of hiding earnings from image rights in offshore accounts in Uruguay and Belize from 2007 to 2009.

The Barcelona star was given 21 months in jail and a €250,000 (£210,000) fine, but like Carvalho will not serve time in prison.

  • Fake Cristiano Ronaldo invades pitch

    Fake Cristiano Ronaldo invades pitch

As if Real Madrid’s squad wasn’t overstocked with world-class talent to begin with, they actually found themselves with two Cristiano Ronaldos on the pitch at one point during Saturday’s La Liga clash with Getafe.

Indeed, a pitch invader came running onto the pitch at the Alfonso Perez and made a beeline for Ronaldo before eventually being rounded up by security and escorted back from where he came.

It turns out the opportunistic fan simply wanted to have a quick chat with his idol, while dressed exactly like him.

Well, they do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all.

Zinedine Zidane was made to sweat on his landmark 100th outing as Real Madrid manager courtesy of a late 2-1 win against Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Los Blancos’ seven-match winning run against their city rivals looked to be coming to an end after Jorge Molina cancelled out Karim Benzema’s first-half opener.

Cristiano Ronaldo popped up to rescue his side late on with his first league goal of the season, though, netting shortly after missing a sitter to lift his side up to second place in the La Liga table on a landmark occasion for Zidane.

The hosts struggled to really get going for large parts of the first half, seeing a couple of Ronaldo shots routinely kept out by Vicente Guaita in the Getafe goal.

Faycal Fajr had the Dark Blues’ only on-target attempt of the half, forcing a simple save out of back-up stopper Kiko Casilla – filling in for the injured Keylor Navas – while Molina headed over from a good position.

Madrid hold claim to having the best away record in the Spanish top flight this term and it was not long before they finally clicked into gear, with Benzema being thwarted with a near-post shot and Lucas Vazquez having a volley blocked aside.

The breakthrough moment then arrived 39 minutes in when Benzema intercepted the ball and charged through, knocking it past sliding defender Juan Cala and smartly tucking beyond the reach of Guaita.

Benzema, himself without a league goal in three outings this term, also skied a shot over the bar as Los Blancos went into the break sitting a goal to the good.

The second half panned out in a similar manner, as Zidane’s men bossed possession but struggled to do a great deal with it and were almost made to pay.

Shortly after Guaita pulled off a double save to deny Ronaldo and a half-fit Marcelo, Molina picked out the net at the other end of the field when reacting quickest to get the faintest of touches to a right-sided cross.

Marcos Llorente got a touch to help the ball into the centre-forward’s path, making it five goals in eight outings for him against the defending champions.

Ronaldo, with 20 previous career goals against Getafe, got on the end of Isco’s cross and rifled superbly past Guaita on this occasion to save his side with five minutes left to play.

  • Ronaldo sells Ballon d’Or trophy for Charity

Ronaldo sells Ballon d’Or trophy for Charity

Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t recognised for his generosity on the pitch but the Real Madrid star makes up for it in his charity work after selling off a prized Ballon d’Or trophy to raise £600,000.

The Real Madrid star donated a replica of his 2013 award to a London auction at the Dorchester Hotel last weekend.

The funds will go towards the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a charity that grants wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses and those who are terminally ill.

The event raised £2.7m for the Foundation – nearly doubling the original fundraising target of £1.5m.

Ronaldo is a long-term supporter of Make-A-Wish, donating funds and granting wishes to seriously ill children across the world, and specifically asked for the replica of his 2013 award to be donated to auction raising funds for the UK charity.

The Ballon d’Or trophy is recognised as one of the highest personal accolades a player can receive in the game. Under a FIFA banner between 2010 and 2015 it was also the official world player of the year award.

Ronaldo’s 2013 triumph came following a four-year winning streak by on-pitch rival rival Lionel Messi.

The Portugal international has won the award four times in all, having also collected the accolade in 2008, 2014 and 2016.

Ronaldo has been gearing up with Portugal ahead of two crucial World Cup qualifiers, where his side take on Andorra on Saturday before facing Group B leaders Switzerland in their final game next week.

The European champions need two wins to be certain of finishing top of their group and secure a spot in Russia next summer.

  • La liga: Real Madrid 2-0 Espanyol (Isco 30′, 71′)

La liga: Real Madrid 2-0 Espanyol (Isco 30′, 71′)

It was Real Madrid 2-0 Espanyol at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

Real Madrid dominance was rewarded with a goal in the first half through a goal from Isco at the 30th minutes.

Ronaldo sliped a neat ball through the defence, Isco ran on through and toe-pokes the ball through Pau Lopez’s legs.

And Real nearly make it two immediately. They win the ball back in midfield, Isco clips a long pass from right to left, Ronaldo lines up a volley and catches it pretty well, but it goes over the bar.

To give you an idea of how much Real dominated possession/territory at the first half, they’re essentially playing a 1-1-3-6 formation. Nacho and Achraf were two of the wingers, the rest are just sort of attacking.

When Espanyol really should level, but instead they’re now 2-0 down. Isco also scored the second goal. He hit the back of the net on the 71 minute. He was the one that score the opening goal in the 30th minute.

It was more of a rough goal as Ramos was tackled in his own six-yard box, the ball was cut back to Baptistao with what is close to an open goal but Nacho is there to do just enough and put him off. Then a few seconds later, Darder is robbed in midfield by Ronaldo, Real streak forwards and Isco finds himself in some space, near the penalty spot, and he guides it into the corner.

Ronaldo shows off new £1.85m Bugatti Chiron

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been busy showing off the latest addition of his glittering car collection.

The Portugal star shared a video of himself taking his son for a spin in a new Bugatti Chiron.

Ronaldo is rightly in a celebratory mood after his side’s impressive 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

It appears a brand new supercar is what you buy a man who already seems to have everything.

Ronaldo looked very pleased with himself as he drove his new toy out of an underground garage with Cristiano Jr in the passenger seat.

Writing on Instagram, Ronaldo said: ‘New animal in the building Bugatti Chiron.’

The car, which is worth an estimated £1.85million, even had personalised ‘CR7’ headrests. It seems no expense was spared.

Ronaldo returned to goal scoring form for Real Madrid in their midweek Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund.

The 32-year-old scored twice for Zinedine Zidane’s side as they lay down an impressive statement of intent in the competition.

The Spanish side have now won both their group matches this season and look likely to battle Tottenham for the top spot.

Meanwhile Manchester United fans were treated to a brief reminder of their former glory days as Rio Ferdinand caught up with his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

The pair spent six seasons together at Old Trafford, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League before Ronaldo made his way to Real Madrid in 2009.

Long since retired and now working in the media industry, Ferdinand was given the chance to interview the Portuguese and posted a photo of the pair on his Instagram account.

In the caption, he wrote: ‘Always good to see my man @cristiano & pleasure to interview him on his new Chapter 5: Cut to Brilliance boot!!!! Thanks to @nike for making it happen.’

Ferdinand had teased his followers with a picture earlier in the day, asking fans to guess who his latest interviewee was just from the back of their head. Unsurprisingly, many were quick to guess correctly.

Although the subject of the interview appears to be under wraps, Ferdinand’s hint at a new ‘chapter’ suggests his new children, twins Mateo and Eva Maria Dos Santos, may have something to do with it.

The two children arrived in Ronaldo’s life in July after being born to a surrogate in California. The 32-year-old is also expecting a girl with partner Georgina Rodriguez to take his total offspring up to four with Cristiano Ronaldo Jnr the eldest.

Ferdinand, who works with BT Sport as one of their top pundits, may have been working for the broadcaster ahead Real Madrid’s much-anticipated Champions League clash with Tottenham on October 17.

  • UEFA Champions League: Ronaldo grabs brace as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund

UEFA Champions League: Ronaldo grabs brace as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his 150th European game with two goals as Real Madrid sealed a 3-1 victory at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday to lead their UEFA Champions League Group H.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ronaldo scored two second half goals after Gareth Bale’s stunning early volley gave Real the lead at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park.

The Germans fought back when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finally netted with just over half an hour left, but there was to be no repeat of last year’s 2-2 draw in Dortmund between the teams.

“Real were simply ruthless and utilised their goal scoring chances,” Dortmund midfielder Gonzalo Castro later said.

“We had the chance to make it 1-1, but instead we went 0-2 down and then it is always hard against Real.’’

The result leaves Real top of Group H, just ahead of Tottenham Hotspurs, who beat Apoel Nicosia 3-0 away in Cyprus through a Harry Kane hat-trick.

Having also netted twice against Apoel, Ronaldo has now scored four goals in just two Champions League games this season.

He marked his 400th appearance for Madrid in total with another pair to leave him with 411 goals in the famous white shirt.

This is the first time Dortmund have lost at home to Real in seven European games, while holders Madrid have now scored in 38 successive Champion League games.

Dortmund should have been awarded a penalty kick with 13 minutes gone when Sergio Ramos cleared Maximilian Philipp’s shot off the line and the ball deflected off his hand.

Andrey Yarmolenko’s initial cross sailed tantalisingly over the head of Borussia’s top-scorer Aubameyang in the build-up.

Real took the lead three minutes later when right-back Daniel Carvajal whipped in a cross and Bale’s non-chalant volley sailed over Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki for a stunning goal.

With half an hour gone, Dortmund turned the screw with Carvajal having to rescue Real by whipping the ball off Aubameyang’s toes with the Gabon striker bearing down on goal.

Aubameyang had the ball in the net on 38 minutes, when he spun and fired home Lukasz Piszczek’s pass, but the goal was ruled offside as it stayed 1-0 to Real at the break.

Real lived dangerously after the break when Mario Goetze tried to find Aubameyang, but centre-back Raphael Varane cleared the danger.

The Spanish giants doubled their lead on 49 minutes when Ronaldo met Bale’s inch-perfect cross.

Dortmund pulled a goal back on 54 minutes when Aubameyang slipped his marker to convert Gonzalo Castro’s cross, then hit the side netting as Borussia pushed for the equaliser.

With 15 minutes left, Burki had to push Isco’s shot around the post as Real kept the pressure.

Ronaldo, who was left in acres of space, settled the tie by blasting home Luka Modric’s cross on 79 minutes with Madrid’s third goal on the break.

It was a goal which took the game out of Dortmund’s grasp.

In other UEFA Champions League matches played on Tuesday, Kevin De Bruyne’s superb strike and a late Raheem Sterling goal maintained Manchester City’s impressive form.

They won 2-0 at Shakhtar Donetsk in Kiev

  • C. Ronaldo suspended for five games

    C. Ronaldo suspended for five games

Real Madrid’s forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for five games after being sent off the football pitch in Real Madrid’s 3-1 win against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup first leg on Sunday.

The football icon was initially given a one-match ban for being shown two yellow cards and further attracted four for pushing the referee in the back after he had been sent off.

The bookings at the Nou Camp were for taking off his shirt to celebrate his goal to make it 2-1 and for a dive.

Consequentially, Ronaldo will miss Wednesday’s second leg of Spanish Super Cup and La Liga on the 20 of August. Other games are Valencia (h) – La Liga on August 27, Levante (h) – La Liga on September 9 and Real Sociedad (a) La Liga on September 17.

The 32year old player has only 10 days to appeal the decision against him.

However, the Portugal international will be able to play in the Champions League but will not return to domestic action until 20 September against Real Betis.

Reacting to Ronaldo’s second yellow card shown for diving eight minutes from time when he went down inside the area under pressure from Samuel Umtiti, Madrid boss, Zinedine Zidane after the game said: “Ronaldo’s sending-off annoys me because even if it is not a penalty, the card is harsh,” adding that the club would see what it could do so that he is available on Wednesday.

It would be recalled that this marks Ronaldo’s 10th red card of his career and the two yellow cards on Sunday came within two minutes.

In his post-match report, the referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea wrote: “Once shown the red card, Ronaldo pushed me lightly as a sign of his disapproval.”

  • United’s Mourinho eyes first Super Cup win in Real reunion

United’s Mourinho eyes first Super Cup win in Real reunion

Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho can collect the one European trophy he lacks when his side face Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday.

This will be his first competitive meeting with the Spanish giants since an acrimonious split in 2013.

Mourinho won the Europa League last season to salvage an otherwise disappointing first campaign under the Portuguese.

During his stint in Spain, he had led Real to the Liga title with a record 100 points and won a King’s Cup in an eventful stay between 2010 and 2013.

His achievements at the Santiago Bernabeu were overshadowed, however, by his falling out with key dressing room figures such as Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas.

He also had confrontations with referees and opponents plus a failure to win the Champions League as Real lost in the semifinals each year.

Mourinho’s legacy has been upstaged by the Spanish club’s three Champions League triumphs in the four years since his departure.

Although in a recent interview the Portuguese claimed he had “to beg” Real’s board to let him leave for Chelsea.

Champions League holders Real will be without talisman and former United forward Cristiano Ronaldo in Skopje, Macedonia as the Portugal international was allowed to report late for pre-season training after he played in the Confederations Cup.

Zinedine Zidane’s side beat Sevilla 3-2 in extra-time last year to win the showcase match.

The French coach is targeting a fourth European trophy in less than two years in charge of Real, which would match Mourinho’s tally of continental titles.

United, meanwhile, will be missing central defenders Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, due to suspension, opening up a place in the starting lineup for new recruit Victor Lindelof.

The Swede is one of three signings made so far by United, along with Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku and midfield anchorman Nemanja Matic.

They arrived at a combined cost of 146 million pounds ($190.34 million) as the Old Trafford side looks to improve on a disappointing sixth-placed Premier League finish last term.

Real have added promising youngsters Theo Hernandez and Dani Ceballos to their talent-packed squad which won a Liga and Champions League double last season, while parting ways with forwards Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez.

Their reported interest in French teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe has yet to materialise, however.

United beat Real on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a friendly in California last month and won five of their other pre-season games, losing only to Barcelona.

Real, meanwhile, failed to win any of their four friendlies in the United States in 90 minutes.

They lost 3-2 to Barca and got thrashed 4-1 by Manchester City, their only win came in a shoot-out victory over an MLS All-Stars team.

“The sensation overall is not good, when you don’t win any of your four games something is wrong,” Zidane told reporters after the tour.

“We have to do a lot more, we’ve made a bad start with these results and what we all want is to get home, rest and think about the Super Cup.”
