Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is in hospital with gastroenteritis after missing their Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal.

The France captain, 26, missed training on Tuesday with a fever and was left out of the team for Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against the Saudi Arabian side.

But Real said on Thursday that he has “acute gastroenteritis” and is in hospital for “various tests and treatment”.

  • Real Madrid agree to sign Alexander-Arnold

Real Madrid agree to sign Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold will become a Real Madrid player on Sunday, 1 June after Liverpool accepted a fee to release the defender early from his contract.

The move means the England right-back will join the Spanish side in time to play in the Club World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold, who had already confirmed he would leave Liverpool this summer, has agreed a six-year deal.

The 26-year-old would have been able to leave Liverpool on a free transfer when his contract expired on 30 June.

Fifa approved an additional window for this summer, from 1-10 June, allowing teams to register new players for the expanded month-long Club World Cup, which starts on 14 June and is being held in the United States.

Alexander-Arnold has been with Liverpool since joining his hometown club at the age of six.

He has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, Fifa Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup, FA Cup and League Cup with the Reds.

But earlier this month he said he had decided to leave to experience a “new challenge” and to push himself “personally and professionally”.

Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool having claimed 23 goals and 86 assists in 352 appearances for the club.

He will join England team-mate Jude Bellingham in Madrid, plus former Liverpool and Real midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Alonso, 43, has succeeded Carlo Ancelotti as Real boss after the club failed to win a major domestic or European trophy for the first time since 2020-21.

Alonso declares ‘start of new era’ at Real Madrid

Xabi Alonso declared the start of a new era during his official unveiling as the new manager of Real Madrid.

Alonso, 43, was appointed manager of his former club on a three-year deal on Sunday, replacing Carlo Ancelotti – who will take charge of the Brazil men’s national team.

Madrid endured a disappointing campaign – surrendering their La Liga title to Barcelona, losing to their arch-rivals in the finals of the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercopa, and crashing out of the Champions League to Arsenal in the quarter-finals.

But during a speech at Madrid’s Valdebebas training ground on Monday, Alonso said: “It’s the start of an era.”

He added: “The Real Madrid fans are excited to begin this new era, to grow, and to make the history of this club even greater.

“It’s a special day. It’s a day I will have marked in my calendar for life. I am very happy to be here, in what I feel is my home.”

Alonso, who won a league and cup double with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023-24, explained his decision to return to Madrid 11 years after he left the club as a player.

“We have fantastic players, we have a team that has a lot of potential, [capable of] a very good present and a very good future,” he said.

“That gives me a lot of reason to come here with a lot of energy and a lot of hope that I can get the best out of all the players and build a great team.

“[I have] the conviction that we can achieve big things, worthy of Real Madrid, worthy of all these European Cups, of all these accomplishments made over so many years.

“I want a team that transmits emotion, energy, ambitious play and connects with the fans.”

Alonso paid tribute to Ancelotti – who won three Champions Leagues, two Club World Cups and two La Liga titles across two spells with Los Blancos – and also managed Alonso at both Real and Bayern Munich.

“Carlo was my coach, a great person and a huge influence. Without his mastery, I probably wouldn’t be here,” he said.

“I take over and carry on his legacy with great honour and pride.”

Alonso will begin his tenure on 1 June, before the Fifa Club World Cup next month.

  • Modric to leave Real Madrid after Club World Cup

Modric to leave Real Madrid after Club World Cup

Real Madrid captain Luka Modric has revealed he will leave the Spanish giants after the end of their Club World Cup campaign this summer.

The 39-year-old Croatian midfielder, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, will play his final match at Real’s Bernabeu home when they welcome Real Sociedad on Saturday in their final La Liga game of the season.

“The moment has arrived. The moment I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end,” Modric said on Instagram.

The Croat has won 28 trophies, including six Champions Leagues and four domestic titles, since joining Real from Spurs in 2012.

“I arrived in 2012 with the hope of wearing the jersey of the best team in the world and the ambition to do great things, but I couldn’t have imagined what came next,” he said.

“Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person.

“I’m proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.”

Real will open their Club World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal on 18 June and will also face Mexico’s Pachuca and RB Salzburg of Austria in the group stage.

Modric bagged two goals and six assists in 34 appearances in the Spanish top flight this season, as Real were pipped to the title by Barcelona.

He also featured in every game as Carlo Ancelotti’s side reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Arsenal.

He signed a one-year contract extension last year, which expires at the end of the season.

  • Real Madrid sign Bournemouth defender Huijsen for £50 Million

Real Madrid sign Bournemouth defender Huijsen for £50 Million

Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen will join LaLiga side Real Madrid from June 1 after signing a deal with the Spanish side until 2030, both clubs said on Saturday, making him eligible to play in next month’s Club World Cup.

Premier League side Bournemouth said Real activated a 50 million pounds ($66.36 million) release clause to sign the 20-year-old on a five-year deal.

Real, keen to have Huijsen for the Club World Cup in the United States, beat several clubs to one of Europe’s most sought-after young players, after his impressive campaign since joining Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth last year from Juventus.

The centre back made 34 appearances in all competitions for Bournemouth, scoring three goals. Dutch-born Spain international Huijsen made his debut for Spain against the Netherlands in the Nations League in March.

“Well, Huijsen is a great player, young, with a lot of potential, I think the signing is very good for Real Madrid,” Real manager Carlo Ancelotti told reporters on Saturday.

Injuries to defenders have significantly impacted Real’s season, and Ancelotti highlighted the importance of strengthening the backline.

“Last season, I don’t think it was even thinkable because we had David Alaba’s return in the squad, (Eder) Militao was doing well, (Dani) Carvajal was doing well, and throughout this season, these kinds of injuries have hurt us,” he added.

Carvajal and Militao have been out with serious knee injuries since November. Antonio Ruediger, Ferland Mendy and Alaba suffered injuries late in April and are not expected to be back until the end of the season.

With Barcelona beating Real to the LaLiga title, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup, Real, having been knocked out the Champions League, only have the Club World Cup left to fight for in terms of silverware this year.

  • Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid to coach Brazil

Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid to coach Brazil

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti will leave the Spanish club at the end of the season to become the new national team coach of Brazil.

The 65-year-old Italian will officially take charge of Brazil on 26 May following the conclusion of the La Liga season.

He leaves the Santiago Bernabeu as one of the club’s most successful managers.

Ancelotti won 15 trophies across two spells as Real manager and last season led Los Blancos to a Champions League and La Liga double.

However, his exit from Real comes after Sunday’s El Clasico defeat left Real seven points behind leaders Barcelona with three games remaining.

Barring a spectacular collapse from Barcelona, that result all but confirmed that Real will end the season without a trophy for the first time in four years.

A statement from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said Ancelotti was a “legend of the game” and acknowledged the significance of a foreign coach taking charge of the team.

“This landmark moment sees the coming together of two icons — the only five-time Fifa World Cup champions, and a coach with an unmatched record across Europe’s elite competitions,” the CBF said.

“The CBF warmly welcomes Mr Ancelotti and looks forward to a new era of success under his leadership.”

In their statement, the CBF also thanked Real president Florentino Perez for “facilitating the coach’s release during his contract term”.

Ancelotti’s current deal with Real was set to expire in June 2026.

The Italian takes over the Brazil job from Dorival Junior, who was sacked in March after they lost 4-1 to arch-rivals Argentina in World Cup qualifying.

Brazil sit fourth in the South American group, having lost five of 14 games, although are still well placed to qualify for the 2026 finals.

Ancelotti’s first games in charge of Brazil will be the Selecao’s World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Ecuador next month.

Brazil have not won the World Cup since 2002 and the last time they were Copa America champions was in 2019.

During a 30-year managerial career Ancelotti has been in charge of some of the giants of European football, including Juventus, AC Milan, Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich.

He has won league titles in Italy, Spain, France, Germany and England.

Former Real, Liverpool and Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso, 43, is set to replace Ancelotti in the Bernabeu hot seat.

Alonso announced last Friday he was leaving German side Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season and Real are said to want him in place before the start of next month’s Club World Cup.

  • Barcelona edge closer to title after  4-3 win over Madrid

Barcelona edge closer to title after  4-3 win over Madrid

Raphinha scored twice as Barcelona overcame a two-goal deficit to secure a crucial 4-3 home victory against rivals Real Madrid in a pulsating Clasico, edging them closer to the LaLiga title.

The victory extends Barcelona’s lead at the top of the standings to seven points over second-placed Real Madrid and with three matches remaining, one more victory will clinch a 28th  Spanish league title for the Catalans.

Barca earned a fourth consecutive victory over Real in all competitions this season, and their second in less than a month, in a chaotic match in which both sides showed their usual defensive weaknesses.

However, Barca seemed a much stronger and well organised team overall, dominating possession and creating several chances that were denied by an inspired keeper Thibaut Courtois who prevented Real’s loss from being by a larger margin.

Barcelona can secure the LaLiga title as early as Wednesday, should Real Madrid fail to win at Mallorca. However, regardless of Real’s result, a Barcelona victory in their city derby against Espanyol on Thursday would guarantee the championship for the Catalans.

Real made a blistering start at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium, with a brace from Kylian Mbappe giving them a two-goal advantage.

He opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he was fouled inside the box by keeper Wojciech Szczesny in the fifth minute and extended their lead with a quick counter nine minutes later from an assist by Vinicius Jr.

However, Barcelona responded swiftly with Eric Garcia, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha all finding the net within 15 minutes to overturn the deficit.

Garcia headed home from a corner in the 19th minute, while Yamal scored the equaliser in the 32nd with another brilliant display of technique as he curled a superb shot from the right corner of the box just outside Courtois’ reach and inside the far post.

Two minutes later, a bad mistake by Mbappe in the midfield gifted Barca the ball, with Raphinha launching a quick counter and giving his side the lead with a tidy finish past a helpless Courtois.

Real thought they had earned a second penalty in the 43rd minute but it was overturned due to an offside in the build-up and, one minute later, a costly error by captain Lucas Vazquez gifted Raphinha the goal that extended Barca’s lead.

Barcelona came back strongly in the second half and had several chances denied by a string of stunning saves by Courtois.

They were shocked, however, when Mbappe reduced the deficit in the 70th minute after a quick counter attack by Vinicius, who ran up the right and put it on a plate for the France forward to complete his hat-trick.

Yet last year’s champions could not recover, leaving them on the brink of a season without silverware.

“It was obviously very important to win today. It’s great to have this game after the Champions League, I think it’s already forgotten,” Yamal told Movistar Plus after they were knocked out of Europe in the semi-finals in a heartbreaking midweek loss to Inter Milan.

“Suffering is what makes you strong and what teaches you to correct the mistakes you make. They didn’t create any clear-cut chances other than the goals.

“It was very important to win today to get closer to the league title. We are delighted.”
